Let’s see it has taken Mike Singletary only four games to give rookie Chilo Rachal the chance to start. Where as Mike Nolan would have waited three years.

Will Colvin’s Name be Called

Submitted by Niner Pundit on Tuesday, 22 April 200832 Comments

Oregon receiver Cameron Colvin worked out at the San Francisco 49ers’ workout for Bay Area prospects on the 18th and word is he did so well that some 49ers officials approached him afterward and acknowledged that he’d caught their eyes.

“They told me that they had six selections in this year’s draft and that they’d like to use one on me,” Colvin says. “I thought it couldn’t have gone any better.”

So will Colvin’s name be called on Sunday? If not and he’s not drafted by another team look for Colvin to possibly sign as an UDFA.

I’d take him on the team

The article also says the Bears are interested. I would say 7th or FA. He says the 49ers were impressed with him, but what have the 49ers said, if anything? If good, maybe a 6th.

  • ninerfaithful said:

seventh round pick he will join clayton on the practice squad but it should would be nice if he is a hidden gem but we will see

  • Billy said:

Hopefully hes a Marques Colston for us! I would be so glad!

  • Billy said:

Anquan Boldin wants out of Arizona!!! I wish we could trade our 2nd for him!! But hes in the division this sucks and Cardinals dont want to lose him

  • Ryan the 1st said:

I don’t want Boldin with the MARTZ offense. He isn’t a quick slicing receiver. He’s a big physical receiver that gets his seperation that way too. The niners need to just go best player available as long as they aren’t a QB, Rb, or tight end. Let me ask everyone a question to just know where everyone is at on the draft. If Sweed, Kelly, Cherilus, Mayo, Groves, and Connor are available who DO YOU TAKE and WHY??

  • West said:

Ryan, if Sweed, Kelly, Cherilus, Mayo, Groves, and Connor were all available, I would go with Groves. Reason being, we need to be able to put pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. Tully is better suited, as we all know, as a backup. I know we have J. Moore, but I feel Groves is better all around. With J. Smith & Isaac on the ends, I feel our linebacking core can definately do some damage with Willis/Lawson and Groves. “A lot of speed.” For the TED position, I like Mayo but I feel B. Moore or Dontarrious Thomas could handle the TED position.
As for Cherilus, the offensive line is a big need for us but there is plenty of depth in this years draft which i feel we can address in the second round.
As far as Sweed & Kelly, I wouldnt address the WR position in the first or second rounds. we still have Hill and Battle who are going to be a big contributing factors, along with the new additions.
For the third round, I’m hoping for Trevor Law… even though it’s a stretch.

Thats a tough question Ryan. I think if all of those players were available we would have a possibilty of getting 2 of them. first of all i think out of those players the ones who stand out are connor groves sweed and maybe kelly… Personaly i would love to have connor just to almost perfect are linebacker core. then i feel groves and sweed would be gone at 39. if we were to get kelly at 39 that would be amazing but that probably wouldnt happen. So i think someone like mayo could land here. also another player i love and would like to see come here is trevor laws from notre dame.. if we got connor and laws i see an amazingly bright future with our defense. Them two along with lawson, willis, clements would be solid.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

I am torn between ALL OF THESE players. I don’t know who to go after…..I am mostly thinking WHICH ONE will has the greatest chance of being there at 39? I say the WRs have the greatest chance. Mayo, Cherilus, Groves, and Connor WILL NOT be there. I really don’t think we could go wrong with any of the players I originally listed, but I think we have a better shot of STILL getting them at pick #39. The force tells me we won’t draft a WR with our first two picks……but I’ve been wrong before.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

The one thing I can tell you is that I would rather have Mayo over Connor. But still, WHO WOULD YOU TAKE????? Mayo, Connor, Groves, Cherilus, Sweed, or Kelly (assuming they are all on the board at 29).

  • MOE said:

WHATS UP, MY 49ER FAMILY. IN A PERFECT WORLD, I WOULD TAKE MAYO AT NO# 29, THEN I WOULD TAKE GROVES AT 39, THEN IN THE THIRD ROUND I WOULD GO TREVOR LAWS, BUT THATS MY IDEA OF A PERFECT WORLD BECAUSE IM A DEFENCIVE TYPE OF PERSON THAT LOVES DEFENCE, BUT I KNOW ITS NOT GOING TO GO DOWN THAT WAY, FOR ONE, THEY WONT BE THERE AT OUR PICKS MOST LIKELY. I ALSO WANT CHRIS JOHNSON, WHOS A RUNNING BACK IN COLLLEGE, BUT HAS 4.24 SPEED THAT COULD PLAY IN THE SLOT, AND USE HIM IN SPECIAL SITUATIONS, PUNTS, KICKOFFS, AND THIRD DOWN IN SPACE, SUCH AS SCREENS, PASSES OUT IN THE FLATS, TO GO DEEP AS A SLOT RECEIVER, IS A THREAT TO GO THE DISTANCE ANYTIME HE TOUCHES THE BALL. LIKELY A THIRD ROUND PICK, BUT WITH ALL THAT SPEED, SOME TEAMS WILL LIKELY USE A MID TO LOW SECOND ROUND PICK ON HIM, IM THINKING. BUT MAYO AND GROVES, WITH A PASS RUSHING DOWN LINEMAN, SUCH AS LAWS, MAYBE PAT SIMS, WOULD PUT US IN THE TOP TEN TEAMS ON DEFENCE IN A HURRY, ALONG WITH A PRETTY GOOD OFFENCE, ITS POSSIBLE. MAYO IS HELLA GOOD AND ATHLETIC AND CAN HELLA HIT AND COVER, WITH SOME PASS RUSH ABILITY, CAN PLAY INSIDE OR OUT SIDE, EVEN AS A RUSH LINEBACKER, HE WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION, ESPECIALLY WITH P WILLY AND LAWSON COMMING BACK IS JUST LIKE ANOTHER DRAFT PICK ON DEFENCE, AND IF WE CAN GET GROVES TOO, ALL MY DREAMS WOULD COME TRUE OUT OF THIS DRAFT, BUT WE ALSO NEED, IF NOT THIS YEAR, THEN NEXT, A FIRST ROUND CB, BUT WE MIGHT FIND A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH THIS YEAR HOPEFULLY, IM SURE THERE GOING TO BE A SOLID COVER CORNER SOMEWHERE IN THE LATER ROUNDS, IF WE DID A GOOD JOB OF SCOUTING, IT COULD HAPPEN IN THE LATER ROUNDS. DONT THINK IVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT OUR OFFENCE, BECAUSE I HAVENT, IF OUR OFFENCE WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACK LAST YEAR, OUR DEFENCE WOULD HAVE BEEN RATED WAY HIGHER, BECAUSE NEXT YEAR IF OUR OFFENCE IS GOOD ENOUGH TO AVERAGE 21 POINTS A GAME, OUR DEFENCE, W/THE RIGHT PEOPLE IN THIS DRAFT, COULD CARRY US TO AT LEAST THE DIVISION CHAMPS, THESE ARE JUST MY OPIONS, SO HOPEFULLY IT DIDNT BORE YOU GUYS TO DEATH, SUPER BOWL, DIE HARD “49ER FO LIFE”. P.S
ABOUT THAT WIDE OUT, IVE HEARD OF HIM, AND I HOPE WE GET HIM, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. IVE HEARD HE WAS REALLY GOOD BUT HURT MOST OF COLLEGE CAREER, DIMOND-N-THE-ROUGH UNOUN, SMALL SCHOOL I THINK. BUT, WANT TO KNOW WHO MY SLEEPER IS, AND AT A POSITION OF NEED, BRUCE DAVIS FROM UCLA, ANYWAY, THANKS FOR READING, I HOPE ALL MY FOLKS (49ER DIE HARDS)LIKED MY LITTLE COMMENTS, HOLLA BACK!!!!!!!!PEACE

  • ninerfaithful said:

groves would be such a nice addition to the line backers we already have …. but i so think we need a # wide rec and if sweed is on the board at #29 we have to take him… plus we have a proven mentor in issac bruce to take him under his wind the next two seasons and get him ready ….. i am sick of the drought we have been in with that WR position i think the only person who we can consider a play maker at the position is Battle

McShay just posted his 7 round mock draft.
His picks for us are as follows:
    1st-Jared Mayo LB
    2nd-Jordy Nelson WR
    3rd-Red Bryant DT
    4th-Cody Wallace C
    6th-Colt Brennan QB
    7th-Jonathan Wihlite CB

Now if this is how our draft falls I’d be kind of disappointed. Mayo ok since in his mock top OT are gone. Would be hell of a tandem with Willis in middle.
Nelson I actually think is very underrated reciever in this years class however I don’t think he is a wise choice for our 2nd round pick. When actually lookin at his mock in 2nd Groves, Cason and Phillips are all still available when we pick and we take Nelson IDK about that.
3rd round I’m not a fan of Bryant. So just don’t like that pick.
Wallace I think there are better choices for Oline on board. Some of which are Radovich, Young, Richardson. I wouldn’t have taken bryant in 3rd. Could have gone Rachal in 3rd who’s set as better guard and then Rubin he still has available when our pick of 4th is.
Don’t have 5th. But 6th for Brennan.. hmm no.. if we take qb late Dixon was available he’d be the guy I’d take a look at.
In 7th he has us taking Wihlite. Who I don’t know anything about so I can’t really judge that choice.
Overall I would be kind of upset if this is what our draft would look like.

7th round he still has Monk, Urritia two taller recievers also has devone bess and Darius Reynaud(who personallly if he’s there in 7th would be a hell of a slot guy in martz system and a nice guy in return game. He def got speed to burn.

  • red&goldforlife said:

I completely agree with you west! I hope it goes down that way!

  • West said:

1st, 29th overall. Quentin Groves, linebacker, Auburn. In the pass-happy NFC West, the 49ers need someone who can put pressure on Matt Hasselback, Matt Leinart and Marc Bulger. One question the 49ers have to ask is whether Groves is a one-trick pony who can rush the passer but do little else befitting a linebacker. Look for the 49ers to try to trade down a few slots and get Groves a little later.

2nd, 39th overall. Brandon Flowers, cornerback, Virginia Tech. The elite offensive tackles are off the board and it’s too early to snag the next-best one. So the 49ers take the best cornerback still available. Flowers is in the Nate Clements mold, a decent cover guy who loves to come to the line of scrimmage and lower his helmet.

3rd, 75th overall. Carl Nicks, offensive tackle, Nebraska. Character concerns scare off other teams but not the 49ers, who grab one of the better offensive tackles at January’s Senior Bowl. Nicks is raw but has quick feet for a guy who tips the scales at more than 340 pounds. If he drops down to 325, he’ll be even quicker. Early on, he could play the role that Adam Snyder filled so well in recent years – someone who can fill in at both guard and tackle. BTW, Nicks is 22 years old, not 25 like some draft sites list him.

4th, 107th overall. Harry Douglas, receiver, Louisville. The 49ers pass on the big-name wideouts at the top of the draft but end up selecting one of the most productive receivers in the country. Sure, Douglas is slight of frame. But he gets off the line of scrimmage quickly and is unafraid to go over the middle. The perfect guy for Mike Martz, who, it should be noted, coached Douglas at the Senior Bowl.

6th, 174th overall. Lionel Dotson, defensive tackle, Arizona. The 49ers love to take defensive linemen on the second day (Ronald Fields, Melvin Oliver, Joe Cohen) who have the potential to develop into decent back-ups. Dotson fits that mold to a t.

7th, 214th overall. Ben Moffitt, linebacker, South Florida. The overachiever type that the 49ers love at Ted linebacker. What Moffitt lacks in athleticism, he makes up for in hustle and savvy. At the very least, he’d be an excellent special teams guy.

  • West said:

red&goldforlife….i wouldnt be mad at the above draft either……at least the 1st 2nd and 3rd round if it went down

  • Mike said:

I’d actually like Moffitt there in 7th west. Plays hard every play. And doesn’t give up on plays. If he was ideal size for a ILB i think he would go somewhere in 3-4th. And fact that South Florida wasn’t a good program until this past year .I think thats only reason why he’s down so far in rounds. Would gladly take him in the 7th though without any doubts.
Question is does he fall that far. Could go anywhere from 5-7th round. Also in 7th like corey lynch for fs and special teams if he’s there. Or a darius reynaud b/c he had good return ability and could be good slot guy in system.

I like Connor much more than mayo. Mayo seems more of a Willis run around a wreak havoc. We already have one of those we need a blue collar linebacker like Connor to take on some blocks to free Willis up. thats why I like Connor.

  • Loeher said:

There’s a new Mock on nfl.com that have us drafting Mayo in the 1st.

That’s ok, u tin that mock we’re getting Mayo over Groves, River and Connor. That’s a little strange.

That’s ok, but in that mock we’re getting Mayo over Groves, River and Connor. That’s a little strange

  • Mike said:

Now judging from way draft could fall. What would everyone do if we got mayo/connor and groves… It actually could be possible. Now I’m not all for that however. That would give us one hell of a young linebacker core

  • Medford said:

We should have tried to get Jared Allen

  • Joe S. said:

I for god and everything hope our draft goes like this

-1st Kenny Phillips, FS, there shouldn’t be any questions, He should replace Roman way before our bye week
-2nd Ryan Clady, OT, a huge tackle but would probably get moved to guard
-3rd Ahtyba Rubin, NT, The only zero gapper other than Ellis in the draft
-4th Colt Brennan, QB, He is a perfect fit for Martz
-6th Eddie Royal, WR, He may not be the fastest but he is damn quick on those slants and Martz seemed to like him
-7th Davone Bess, WR, Yes the next Arnaz battle and should be safe on the pactice squad

  • red&goldforlife said:

if he is there desean jackson is the way to go!! I love D but we need a playmaker in the worst way and this guy is all that. Plus the greatest ever endorses him (jerry rice) tough to pass up if he is there!

i still think that is we should take WR But i know if groves is there he is the best pick for us cause if he falls into round two the dolphins will grab him up the are trying to trade jason taylor to move back into the first round

if boldin wants out…do what you need to do and GET HIM! Boldin is well worth a #2 pick, and he is a great slant/slasher. When he was hurt last seson he had to rely on short routes and did very well.

WRs are a MUCH BETTER buy as free agents. Never a reason to draft one unless your team is stacked…they just take too long to dev.
