The Perfect Offseason: Position by Position
Now that this tragedy of a season is over, it’s time to look forward to some offseason soap opera. I have a feeling we’re going to experience some very good highs this year. Keep in mind that, while most of this is a very good possibility, it’s not neccessarily what is going to happen. More my idea of a perfect offseason and a player evaluation.
Offensive Coordinator- It bears mentioning, now that Hostler is gone. Of course my favorite pick of the current candidates would be Cam Cameron, given his experience in San Diego and a premier running back like Tomlinson. I think he could build an offense around Gore that would take Gore near the same level. My close second is Billick. Billick is a lousy head coaching candidate, but I think the strength of his personality would offset Nolan nicely as an OC. I like his experience and he would not pull any punches when it came to telling Nolan what the best move for the offense would be. My third choice is Dennis Green. He hasn’t been mentioned as a candidate, and he may not be. But there have been whispers, and I can’t say I would hate it. Fourth (and almost in the third bracket with Green) is Mike Martz. Granted, I have a hatred for Martz which is connected to his St. Louis days, but he’s not a terrible candidate. He is, however, a bit of a gamble for our already beaten up QB’s. It’s not likely that we would run all that often, which is how we’re currently built, and it’s not the best choice for RB Frank Gore. Not to mention we don’t have the receivers needed for a Martz offense, which is easily remedied. The only person that should be ixnayed from contention altogether is Chan Gailey, who is completely outclassed by the former.
O-line Coach- Admittedly I don’t know a lot about this specific field and who’s available. But with Warhop on the hot-seat, Hudson Houck is a great plug in name.
Quarterback- The next word you’re looking for is controversy. There is only one player this year that performed at all in the Qb position and it is Shaun Hill. I heard someone once say that he is a solid Qb, but he will not take us to a Super Bowl. I disagree. Shaun Hill has had plenty of time to secure the mental aspects of the game in his head sitting behind others for six years. And even now with limited experience, an underperforming offensive line, and a terrible set of wide receivers, he makes great decisions and has boosted this team’s offense to levels unseen since Garcia left. Nolan needs to be careful, Shaun Hill will want the start and will likely go elsewhere if he doesn’t get it here. Although I think Shaun Hill deserves to be the starter of this football team at some point next season, look for Alex Smith with his huge paycheck and injury excuses to win the position battle in training camp. Expect Trent Dilfer, Chris Weinke, and possibly Drew Olsen to be cut. Expect the Niners to draft a late round QB “diamond in the rough” as a pupil for the future and also as a safety guy in case the worst happens.
Wide Reciever- This is one area in which we need help. Serious help. Maybe even draft help. If it were up to me, the only receivers to remain on the roster from our current crop would be Arnaz Battle, although Jackson stepped things up when Shaun Hill stepped in (as did many players). Lelie is a waste of money and Hill is yet undetermined. The problem with my theory is the unavailability of a big play receiver in free agency. If I were Nolan, I’d seriously consider giving Antonio Bryant a call. (Even at that point, Bryant is not the big play receiver that we need, and is a great number two, at best.) Keep your eye on the Chad Johnson trade whispers in Cincinnati. While my colleagues all deny it as impossible, but I live here, and it is definitely being talked about.
Tight End- This is one position that needs no work whatsoever. Sixth pick Vernon Davis is blossoming nicely under Shaun Hill and second Tight End Delanie Walker is a great compliment. Davis must work on being smarter about learning when the play is over. If not, look for him to continue fumbling and eventually be injured.
Running Backs- We all know that Frank had a rough year, but he will be back along with his rushing title promises. Two things Frank needs to do is get a little faster and work on his catching ability. I believe Maurice Hicks will be retained, and although his kick returns have improved, I think he will be stripped of those duties. Hicks should be cut, but likely he will play backup to Gore. Michael Robinson will remain our third down back.
Offensive Line- I’ll lump this one together, because thats what crap does. This is a screaming need for upgrade on offense. Worse than the recivers, these guys allowed a franchise high sacks in 07. I’d retain Larry Allen, because I believe he can be productive again, and hes just so big and strong that he’d be hard to replace. The rest, save the center position, and Staley are disposable and/or backup guys. We need to hit free agency hard in this category.
Defensive Line- We lost a great tackle in Bryant Young. One we’re not ever going to see the likes of again in terms of work ethic and pride in his game. Nonetheless, a replacement must be found. Marques Douglas will have a career year next year. Another area to address in the draft. Look for Issac Sopoaga to have increased duties if he is retained.
Linebacker/ Defensive End- Patrick Willis is a godsend. By the time he is done, he will be the greatest player to ever play the game at his position. This franchise, at all costs, should allow him to retire as a 49er. Derek Smith needs to go. His age/salary/terrible play have all compounded to make him too cumbersome to keep as a viable option at even backup. I wish Nolan would give Moore a little more playing time, but he won’t. Manny Lawson could possibly lead the team in sacks next year, barring injury. Jeff Ulbrich is a solid plug in and should be retained at least for special teams duties. Roderick green should be kept, but I fear he will not be. Banta-Cain should be released or traded if any value can be drummed up. Scotty Mac claims that we will not hit Free Agency as hard as last year. Thats a lie. I took that to mean we won’t be paying any one player eighty million again. Expect the addition of Lance Briggs, or maybe Suggs if he is not tagged, potentially making this one of the most feared LB corps in all of football.
Cornerback- I would address this position in the draft as early as the best player is available. Walt Harris wont play forever, and we need a good compliment to Nate Clements, who earned his salary this year. Despite his fading into the backround, I still like Spencer in Nickel situations.
Strong Safety- I like both the Lewis’, but I’d start Keith over Michael any day.
Free Safety- I like Roman right where he’s at, but we’re unusually thin at safety.
Punter- Andy Lee should be a Niner until he decides that it is time to retire. Bar none the best player at that position in the NFL.
Kicker- Joe Nedney is solid, but not as solid as he used to be. I think it’s high time to bring in some competition for him to give him the kick he needs. Of course, the ever present name during the offseason and training camp is Kirk Yliniemi, but I think we’re going to need a little stiffer competition than that.
Kick Returner- Maurice Hicks should be stripped. I like Arnaz Battle, but Michael Robinson would be an intriguing option to try out.
Punt Returner- Nate Clements. Im scared of injury, but he is adept at it.

A CB who ‘fades into the backround’ is doing his job that means passes are not going his way.

Steve, thanks for reading. The reason Shawntae Spencer has faded into the backround is because he’s no longer starting. It’s hard for passes to go his way when he’s not out on the field. But thanks for the wisdom and keep reading! -NN

I think Martz would be almost as bad as Gailey would be for this offense. Unless we get about 2-3 Martz-like WR’s and a top end left tackle (Jonas, you were a huge waste of money) then I do not see Martz being able to effectively run his style with the tools we have now.

that would be one hell of an off season. Would be nice to get bernard berrian too. He could be a good number two reciever that demands double coverage because of his speed and deep threat ability. That would open up Vernon Davis, Gore, and the other reciever we have ( Could be Jackson, Battle, Free agent, or draft pick)
Andrew | Jan 7, 2008 | Reply
Here’s the deal with the Niners O-Line. Jonas Jennings sucks, cut him. He can’t stay healthy, and its bad, because when he is, he’s a dominant run blocker. He should be a RT, but we’re paying him to play left.
Staley should move to LT. Adam Snyder should move to RT, because the guy is a beast and can play any position on the line (except C). Smiley should be resigned and play RG, with no f’in questions as to whether he is the guy. When no one question his contract, or his status, he produced, but he’s been picked on by Nolan for two seasons now. David Baas can play LG, and Larry Allen, if he truly loves to game, can still mentor for the bench. I love big Larry, but our young guys need to maul. Allen could still be dubious as sub, and we could even bring in a monster formation with 6 lineman. Heitmann is a rock, and can hold this unit together.
LT - Staley
LG - Baas
C - Heitmann
RG - Smiley
RT - Snyder
Super Sub - Tony Wragge, and Allen if he stays on board. He said he wants to play, but didn’t specify if it’d be with the 9ers.
ninersgold | Jan 7, 2008 | Reply
Smiley sucks, snyder is a career back up, bu a decent start. Staley can play either side at tackle, we should try to get gosder Cherilius in the draft, he is good at Right Tackle, and he is huge he is 6′7″. James Hardy should be our second round pick, he is also 6′7″ and he can run a 4.45-4.5 40 yard dash. He has some deep speed as well as height. He would be a great endzone target, because he is uncoverable. He has a rare height and speed, and he has great hands. He would be a great complement to a guy like Bernard Berrian. The speedy deep threat with the uncoverable giant with good hands and speed… perfect.
ninersgold | Jan 7, 2008 | Reply
Remember Dwayne Jarret?, he only ran a 4.65 40 yard dash, and he isn’t even nearly as tall as Hardy. Look where he is now. Hardy is better than Jarret, for anyone who compares him to Jarret, this guy is different, bigger, faster, and he has better hands than Jarret. Hardy is not worth a first rounder though. He would be like a first round pick if we get him in the second round though.
ninerfaithful4ever | Jan 7, 2008 | Reply
we hold the 8th pick in the second round do u think hardy would fall to us with that pick?
Jason(AB83Rules) | Jan 7, 2008 | Reply
Im sorry, i dont beleive the whole Keith is better than Michael, Michael Lewis had a great year, a pro bowl year and Keith isnt half the player Michael is, heck he isnt half the player Roman is.
ninersgold | Jan 7, 2008 | Reply
It is very possible for Hardy to fall to us, depending on how he does on his 40 time and his draft stock. The raiders are one team that might pick him up before us, but it depends on free agency and what they do with their first pick. I think we have the seventh pick don’t we? (in the seond round) Besisdes if nobody else is available than we should take him with our first pick, he should definitely be available then. He would be a steal in the scond round though. First round quality is questionable, but he has the potential to be a bigger faster Jerry Rice, but he could also turn out to be just a second reciever for us. Which we do need, but a second reciever is not worth a first round pick. He could be worth a first but we won’t know till we get him or even miss him.
Nick Newton | Jan 7, 2008 | Reply
Jason- Thanks for reading. I suppose it all depends on your preferences. Supposedly Michael Lewis is a big hitter, but Keith can lay them out, and is a little bit more aggressive. More of a ball hawk. Michael had a good year, but I wonder how Keith would’ve done. Keep reading! -NN

Oh keith lewis is ok, but Micheal Lewis is a helluva lot better than him. Nobody has talked about our special teams. Keith Lewis is worth keeping, along with Jeff Ulbrich, for special teams. Those two are BIG hitters. It would be nice to get another special teams guy like that, our coverage on punts and kickoffs would be even better. We have an amazing punter, a good kicker with a very strong leg, and we have plyers who can block field goals and punts. Our only weakness is kick returning/punt returning. We need to get that one guy who is great at returning both kick and punt returns. A guy like a devin hester (that would be incredible for us) or a guy like joshua cribbs ( he is very good too) would help out our startin g posistion on the field. We could start drives at our own 40-45 or even start at mid field and more. We could have THE BEST special teams in the NFL if we find a a good returner. Next years draft a guy like that is derrick williams from penn state he returns kickoffs and punts for touchdowns. He would be a nice pick up.

This is wahat I think of Hill. He is very good at making short passes and long time consuming drives, that ned in touchdowns. He is very calm and cool, a lot like Tom Brady and if you ant to go to the classics Joe cool, that’s right Joe Montana. That “calm” quality is a superbowl winning quality. Brady has it and Montana had it, that’s why they have so many superbowls. i think if we continue to improve the offensive and defensive lines and our recievers, he could lead us to a superbowl winning season. He has that quality that very few QBs have. Not even Peyton manning has that quality. That “calm under pressure” and continuing to only focus on fixing your own problems, Shaun Hill has that quality. His mentality is very much like th New England Pats mentality is this season. Do your best, one game at a time, keep working on fixing your mistakes and eventually you will reach “perfection”. That is what Hill is like. he way he talks the way he plays, I believe if there was 1:30 left in the 4th quarter down by four points on our own 10 yard line, I would trust the ball in Hill’s hands for that long drive down field for the game winning touchdown drive. (just like Brady and Montana). That calmness gives confidence to the rest of the team, which makes Hill a leader. I don’t beleive ALex could do anything like that. He might depending on if it’s his flash of brilliance playing or his usual avaerage play. He would probally die under pressure. But he has come back before, but I don’t think the rest of the team would have the confidence in him, like they do in Hill.

Thank you AM, that is just the way I see him, Hill looks so calm and cool even under pressure. The way he sounds when he talks is even calm, when Alex talks he is always nervous, talkin about mistakes, throws he wished he had back, Hill didn’t say those things, Smith, Dilfer, and Weinke said that though. Hill said he needs to fix his mistakes and that he will work on them, the others just say they make mistakes, they don’t work hard to fix them. I wanna see Hill play with a good offensive line and recievrs and see what he can do with weapons.

Ninersgold - Shaun Hill has been a career backup and played well in 2.5 games. I agree he has a calm nature but I still question a guy who has never played a full season as a starter. I DO want to see an open competition at QB that will give the best man a chance to start. I am just as desperate as the rest of you to find our franchise QB but I still have my doubts that Hill (or any of our QB’s) is that guy. Next year will tell the story!!! All our QB’s would have benefited from a more reliable group of WR’s. How many dropped balls did our offense have? They reminded me of the Seahawks a few years ago.
All this is really &*#$%@$# because of the great history of our team. 5 Superbowls to garbage!!! Damn the Yorks!! If we were the Texans or Bengals then this might be easier to handle.

Los Banos Jerry… I didn’t say that he will be a Joe Montana or a Tom Brady, he has the same “calm under pressure” factor as they do. It makes the team more confindent. It doesn’t nescessarily mean that he will be a perennial super bowl winner. (who knows?) I could see him getting us there if we had the rest of this team set up. (Which we don’t) Los Banos Jerry you are one of the most immature people I have read off of this blog. Hill isn’t proven yet, it is just an observation from the first two starts he has had. Who would you rather have Hill or Smith? (if those were your only choices) Everybody on this team has a lot more confidence in Hill than Smith, Vernon Davis being used, and Gore. Smith rarely used them in the passing game. We will have to wait and see, like 49ersglory said.
Los Banos Jerry… are you a drug addict? You like to talk about drugs a lot, and you are a very sad and negative person. You probally thought that Gore sucked until the 2006-2007 season. Maybe you are on the wrong site. You sound a lot like a RAIDER fan. To many losses for you to handle? It sucks that this team used to be one of the greatest, now that it is crappy because our owners don’t know anything about Football. Eddie DeBartelo got screwed, than the cap room went to hell, and now we are in a rebuilding era. We need to wait till we get a franchise quarterback ( SMith is not a franchise quarterback) . Look at the colts. They sucked for a really long time until they got peyton manning. I believe that you need to first build an offensive line, than go get your Franchise QB. Smith is a bust. Never pick up a spread offense QB from college. We might want to keep rebuilding for another 5 years until this team might be an actual playoff threat.

When you have a guy, you want to blame him for a teams problems. An O line is and has to be a cohesive unit. Without it, they all come up short. Smiley has played his but off for SF. He played a whole season with a torn labrum and still produced. He has a real mean streak on the field and has very quick feet and he is fast. Also a great guy off the field. If you guys dont want him, dont worry because there are alot of teams looking for a good solid guard. He will be signed and at a much improved contract. Quarterback, other linemates, play calling alot of things go into a good “O” line. Justin has done his part.
