Niners Win Despite Nolan
Shaun Hill improves to 1-0 for his career. The 49ers are 10-1 when Frank carries 20+. But all of that was almost for nothing, when head coach Mike Nolan went for it on 4th and 2 with around 6 minutes left. I’m still wondering what the hell Nolan was thinking, he kicks a FG there and they are up by two scores. It’s not like the kicker has been struggling. Nedney is 27 for 27 inside 50 yards. Thankfully the defense stopped the Bengals when they needed to to preserve the win.
The question everyone will ask moving forward now is do we have ourselves a quarterback controversy?

firen | Dec 15, 2007 | Reply
Yea i don’t really see what that was about, and even if they went for it they should have just went deep, the CBs had nothing on Jackson. Thankfully the defense came up big, yet again.
I don’t think we have a QB controversy just yet. I believe we need to give Alex another chance next season and hopefully have him make a good comeback. That being said, I hope Shaun Hill continues to do what he is been doing and doesn’t let up. A win against a big Tampa team at home will be huge for the whole Niner organization and the fans. I really hope Shaun Hill stays the same poise and confident QB we have been seeing. A 5-11, possibly 6-10 record won’t be a bad way to end this disappointing season.
Boomer | Dec 15, 2007 | Reply
F all that. Alex Smith is a bust. He an over paid piece O crap. Shaun Hill is the real deal and the proof was in his play. Never has this offense been lead in this way by Smith and this is just Hills 1st start ever.
Im hopeful unlike most of you all here that Nolan is givin 2 more years, the time left on his contract. Id hate to switch to yet ANOTHER coach only to have more bad seasons.
Nolan was NOT the problem with the Niners, Alex Smith was the problem, a very highly paid problem.
Alex Smith was Mike Nolans biggest mistake, Shaun Hill on the other hand is Nolans great achievement well, Hill and Willis.

How can you give up on the youngest QB in the NFL so quickly? He went through THREE different Offensive coordinators. I don’t care who you are, at that age it will be nearly impossible to excel.
JNova80 | Dec 15, 2007 | Reply
I guess Nolan doesn’t like a comftorable lead. I’m just glad that we won because I would hate Nolan forever if we didn’t. A WIN, YES!!!!!!!!!!
Shaun Hill played great, he almost threw a pick in the first half, but besides that he did great. He will be watched closely in the last two games of the season.
Darrell Jackson actually looked like a #1 WR for once, I really like how he played.
And Frank Gore looked like he did last year. I just hope he finishes the season with a 1,000 yards.
Boomer | Dec 15, 2007 | Reply
Firen…. Shaun Hill has played on THREE DIFFERENT TEAMS in the past FOUR years. One of the teams were the Amsterdam Admirals.
SO I dont really find him being with three different OC’s a good excuse. 3 different teams for Hill and his first start in the NFL EVER and he led an offense that is the worst in the NFL this year and made tham look better than they have really since smith has played with the Niners, give or take 1 or 2 games smith did ok with.
SMITH IS A BUST, LIKE IT OR NOT. Get over it, he sucks.
wendell | Dec 15, 2007 | Reply
another questionable decision by nolan. heck, even the other team was wondering why he wouldn’t take a two score lead. we won, that’s all that matters though but the nolan situation will happen again and next time we may not be as lucky.

Do we have a QB controversy? No. What we do have is a QB at least for the rest of the season. His name is Shaun Hill. I can’t really say I beleive that Hill can play at this level consistently, or continue this level of play when defenses begin to adjust to him, but he has done what A. Smith couldn’t in 8 weeks or so. 200 yards passing a TD pass, rush TD, all escaped Smith in games that mattered. Smith has no rythm w/ any receivers but Battle, who is oft covered like stink on Doo-Doo. Shaun Hill hit nearly every pass catcher in stride at least once in tonights game. Ultimately this game showed not how good Shaun Hill is and what he may be able to do, but how shitty Alex Smith is. Smith is going to need a 180 in the offseason to become an average player. If you disagree with me, fine. But look at the production of his backups compared to him, and all the other inexperienced Qb’s in the league that have produced more. Kellen Clemens, Trent Edwards, Cleo Lemon, Tavaris Jackson, even Luke McCown made plays for the Bucs some weeks back. There are some Qb’s in this years draft that will be worth a long look. I dont demand we draft a Qb, but if there is someone right, I refuse to pass on them because ‘we need to give Alex another year’. If anything we should try and find ourselves where the Browns are this year, with DA and BQ. Go back over the game film of some 9ers games this and last year, and monitor Smith’s body language on the field. No intenisty, anger, no emotion really, and no characteristics matching any Qb pulling out victories for his team. As much as I want to say “Fuck Alex Smith”, I know that wouldn’t anybody, any good. So I’ll just keep him on a short leash. Really short. Chain too.

Hill makes good decisions, he doesn’t panic, and runs when he sees that there is just no opportunity to make a play. I say give him the last two games and if he looks as good as he did against Min. and Cin. then let the man have a shot next year. We acutally looked like NFL team for once this season boys. A. Smith will be fine, but Hill is just the fire under Smith’s ass that will bring his talent out. If not, we got Hill. Great win, feels real fucking good too!!!!

All the people ragging on Smith seem to have a very short memory.
Smith WON the first two games of the season, you know, the ones where he DIDN’T play HURT!
The rest of the season you can’t really evaluate him. It’s Nolan’s fault that he sent our supposed franchise QB back in before he was ok and thus doomed the season.
I do agree though that Hill was nice to watch and it’s good to have him as an option.
I say let Smith and Hill compete for the top spot in the off-season and whoever comes out ahead gets a shot.
After all, it can only get better, right (we’re NOT the Dolphins!)?

This season is lost already, we have nothing to lose, and Nolan went fot it on fourt and twoo becausen he wanted to see what Hill can do in different types of situations. Unfortunately Shaun Hill’s pass to Jason Hill was dropped. That could be a good tag team right there. The HILL to HILL combination.

Look at the defense Shaun Hill was playing against, that would be the Bengals, who are ranked 26th in total defense coming into the game but in reallity if you’ve ever watched them play you’de know that they seem much worse than that. They get tore up week in and week out. We have seen a game and a half out of Hill and some of you think he’s the next tom brady. Not gonna happen, fire Mike Nolan asap and get Alex Smith healthy because he’s our man next year. But anyway it was great to see Shaun Hill lead the team to a victory which was definately something Mr. I’m as mobile as a treestump Dilfer couldn’t do.

First thing I want to say is I missed the game and when I seen the score I threw my arms up and then I heard the espn anchor say the winner of this game uhhhhh wins the game it was a little funny but that goes to show it’s another bad season for us niners fans.
Second I said it before I like to see the patriots play, they remind me of how our niners use to be and hopefully get back to those winning ways, I don’t hate on them they’re the best team in the league by far.
Third I don’t want to make this into the mitchell investigation on here but how is it this dude use to work for the redsox and does this investigation and not one of those redsox players wasn’t mention and I’m not talking about some unknown pitcher either, it seems like he named dude just so he can protect the star players and the first names that came out of that report was two yankees star players.
The redsox is the most coming back team in the fucking league even that seems suspecious it’s like they’re going back and shooting steroid in each others asses during the games when they’re down, I never seen a team come back so much from being down ever in my fuckin life!
I’m sorry but I had to get that out but I’m greatful for the win, GO NINERS!

I dont know if Shaun Hill is the real deal yet, but at least he knows how to find open receivers and step up in the pocket to let the outside rush go by. Untill they move past these nightmarish Alex Smith years, we wont be a playoff team. I know its unfortunate =/

Wow, all these ” Alex Haters ” must be around 12 years old. Who else would hand the starting QB position over to a guy who played all of 1 1/2 games over 6 years….seriously, go play with your GI joes…stay off the computer. Any real fan of 49ers football knows that Smith is our future. Sure, he struggled, but he only played 3 games when healthy, had no OC, and still won 2 of ‘em. Hill will make a good back up QB next season, but there’s a reason someone plays for 6 seasons, 2 of which he was beaten out for # 2 by Trent Dilfer, and does not take a snap. He is not, and never will be a starter in this league. He looked decent against a very poor CIN defense. He also had a killer running game with Gore. We will see what he’s got against a good TB defense. Smith is still only 23 years old. So much potential. We need a good # 1 WR and OC to unlock it.

If you look for what Hill’s teamates had to say about him you will see. For the 1st time in years the players actually feel comfortable around their QB, from V Davis to D Jax, everyone is more happy with Hill then they have EVER been with Smith.
Hill may not be our #1 next year but one thing is for sure, if we want yet another losing season… no matter who our coaches/coordinators are next year if Smith is out starting QB we will not have a shot at the playoffs…. AGAIN.

How many anointed Rattay after his 300+ yrd first game? next we will be hearing Hicks is the REAL DEAL since Gore has only had three 100 yrd games?
For everyone calling for the OC’s head. What the hell do you think that will do to the offense? 4th OC in 4 years, just what is needed to put the O back on track. Consistency is what is needed. Or a whole sale change. Which means new HC, OC and QB. But the money is to big to let any of that happen.

a report on foxports.com that stated that “(t)here is a good chance that the 49ers won’t pay (Alex) Smith his $8 million option bonus next March, one that would secure seasons for the 2009-10 seasons.”
Well, the 49ers do have a financial decision to make concerning Alex Smith in the offseason, but it might not be as ominous as reported.
Here’s the deal: Nothing has changed in Alex Smith’s contract since it was signed Aug. 28, 2005.
The money that could be coming Smith’s way in the offseason is actually a “buyback,” not an option bonus. And the way the 49ers get out of the final two years of that deal is by paying Smith $8 million.

Here are 2 more reasons why Nolan is a poor evaluator of talent.
Andre Carter and Julian Peterson are let go and now are have great seasons under Washington and Seattle.
With “BY” retiring after this year and taking his team leading 6.5 sacks with him, it would be nice to have Carter’s 10.5 and Peterson’s 9 sacks on our D.
Thanks Nolan…NOT!!!

Sorry, Alex haters, Smith is owed way too much money. No one else is going to trade for him and the Niners aren’t going to take the cap hit to release him and get nothing back. He was 2-1 this year before his shoulder got separated. This lousy season belongs to Nolan and Dilfer. Nolan rushed an injured player back too fast and then played a washed-up Dilfer instead of recognizing the talent on the end of the bench.
If the Niners are smart enough to sign Hill, he’ll be around to compete against Smith (and hopefully someone else comes in, too), but Smith isn’t going anywhere.
So Denise is talking about bringing in a general manager? How about bringing in someone to make gameday decisions and coach the offense? Mike Nolan has proven as a head coach that he’s a good defensive coordinator.

True Niner Fan… that report was investigated by Matt Maiocco, who is actually with the team pretty much every day, and it was found to be erroneous. No matter how they do it, they owe him more cash than any of us will ever see in our lifetimes.
We didn’t keep Peterson because he was coming off an ACL injury from the previous year and he wanted too much money. Yes, he’d doing really well in Seattle, but Manny Lawson fills the void he left. They are both Strong Side 3-4 OLBs. I personally like Lawson a lot better than Peterson at this point and I don’t see him as the type of guy who will put this franchise in a fincancial predicament. Andre Carter is another guy who wanted too mucuh money and he got paid too much money. He didn’t fit our scheme anyways. I think Lawson and Haralson will be a better outside duo than Peterson and Carter would have been. 99 and 98 haven’t even come close to reaching their potentials yet. And Jay Moore is a promising prospect waiting in the wings, when he comes back from injury.
