Niners Sign Bryant Johnson
Reports are coming out on ESPN Radio and East Coast Sports News that Cardinals free agent Bryant Johnson has signed a one year deal. More to follow as story develops.
Nolan on the Johnson signing. “Well we already locked up Bruce (ex-Ram), Darrell Jackson (ex-Seahawk) so we figured we needed a former Cardinal to balance everything out. It’s unfortunate he never played for the Ravens though.
Most signs had Johnson signing with the Bills, since that was one of the main teams that was pushing for Johnson’s services. Here is a little tidbit from Kent Somers from the AZ Republic from yesterday.
Johnson’s agent, Joel Segal, told me last night that the Cardinals are not among the three teams in the running for Johnson. Segal said he has a couple of offers on the table and that Johnson should make a decision soon.
Buffalo has brought Johnson in for a visit, and it’s been reported that the Redskins, Bucs and Titans also have some interest. Segal declined to name the teams.

Awesome news! So where does that leave us at WR? Is Johnson or Bruce the 1st receiver? I think Battle is better than D-Jax and should be our 3rd.
1 Johnson
2 Bruce
3 Battle
4 Jackson
5 Hill

If indeed this is true. Getting 2 wr in free agency. I have to believe unless we are going to cut jackson or battle that we won’t take wr in 1st round. I know I know no one is a legit #1 but as you can all see don’t need a true #1 in Martz system. Just ask Shaun Mcdonald about that. Look at #’s he put up as lions 4th wideout last year. I still think we take one now but if signing is true then I think it’s more likely 2nd-4th round now.

Yea I just read that, pretty basic info but could be a real underrated pickup for us. While he didn’t get much time to showcase his skills b/c of boldin and fitzgerald. He can in this system. I think if it’s a 1 year deal like they are saying I have to believe Martz must be one behind it. Johnson has speed and decent hands and is average/good route runner. Maybe he made a ploy saying how sign a 1 year deal with us and I’ll make you look great and you can go into free agency in 2009 and clean up. I mean with his system I would have to believe its true.
Now i think looking at wr later in draft though. Maybe a will franklin or Hawkins if he slides to 3rd or a few sleepers in Jackson from App. or Reynaud from WVU. Who also double as returners.Even a wr like Grice-mullen or devone bess. I’ll throw a few more out there who i feel could work in the system. Even someone like a Urruttia from Louisville or Monk from arkansas who’s a tall wideout that runs like a 4.6. or a steal later on could be a bowman who’s stock is dropping so fast right now b/c of his slow 40 time. But as we all know 40 is a bit overrated just ask Jerry Rice who ran like a 4.6 and well his game speed was a hell of a lot faster then that. These are a few of my thoughts on matter though
OH and On Issac Bruce I read last night that he will be wearing the number 16 I believe.
wendell | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
either or way, he’s an upgrade on our team. this is good news. to be honest, i like bryant johnson. i think the issue for him is that he played behind fitzgerald and boldin, he’ll have a chance to be “the guy” in san fran.
Cory | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
i hope we sign this guy to a long term contract…thats if he has a big season
Douche Bag | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
I absolutely love this move! He is big and fast. Perfect for Martz given Maiocco’s recent breakdown of the type of receivers Martz likes. This guy is ready to be the guy after being behind Fitz and Boldin. He will have Isaac to mentor him. No real risk with a one year deal, a test drive of sorts. If he shows it, we can pay him next year!

Mike, I’m pretty sure that the “Bruce will wear #16″ was a joke, If I’m correct, we had a guy that wore that # and retired it.

This is the end of Lelie and or Jackson though. b/c figure draft atleast 1 WR. and we already have 6 under contract. Johnson,Battle,Bruce,Hill,Jackson, Lelie. SO atleast 1 of battle, jackson, lelie is gone. Just a matter of which one. I think we can all agree its probably lelie. But with Stone hands jackson I’m not so sure we shouldn’t just cut our losses with him.
Rob | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Whoa, where did this come from? Way to go! Stock up on WRs now, maybe we can get some competetion going come training camp. And, may the best receiver win. Nice job…
Douche Bag | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Now we should draft one of the speedster WR’s from VT (Royal) or that Dexter Jackson cat from a smaller school in a later round and focus on OL and defense with the first couple rounds.

Hey Mike don’t forget about Jason Hill. Maybe the end of the line for him, too. I say good. Our WR group has sucked. Let’s scrap what we have and start over…
Mike | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
I don’t think Hill is going anywhere. Last year was his rookie season and he barely got a chance to even see the field. They say usually it takes most players 3 years before they finally settle in.
Plus Hill was just a 3rd round pick last year. No way do they cut him this year. It would be basically like saying it was a waste to draft him. And if Brandon Williams lasted past his rookie season with us then there’s no way Hill doesn’t. To many people are giving up on him without even seeing what the kid can do on the field. He has a fast 40 time and decent hands Martz can do something with him. Plus keep in mind probably going to have 5-6 recievers on team this season. Martz likes to spread out 4 wide a lot.
Just because someone doesn’t show or produce in first year doesn’t mean they should just be cut like that. If that was the case then there is no way the nfl would still be around. Have to give kid’s chance’s to play and Nolan didn’t do that with hill last year. Hell he didn’t even do it with lelie and he was a veteran that nolan wanted on the team.
Mike | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Don’t think Hill is going anywhere. I think/hope bruce will take him under his wing a little and teach him.
I think its more like Johnson,Bruce,Battle, Hill, rookie draft pick and either lelie or jackson. Or both lelie and jackson could be cut or traded and have 2 rookie wr.
I want to see what Hill can do in a real game before just cut him loose.
Natuzho-Aliento de fer | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
We could probably cut someone between Lelie and Hill, the reason is, that we have good receivers and they could compete for the #5 spot unless we come up with signing James Hardy in the draft, that’ll make me eat pankakes

I think with this signing we can forget about Hardy. Just can’t see them spending a first on a wr now. I mean no guarntee he would have lasted till our pick to begin with but if he does I see us passing on him going with Oline or maybe trading back a bit depending how draft falls and picking up extra picks. I know only a 1 year deal but think this puts earliest we take a wr is 2nd. and I think if hardy goes into the 2nd the Jets grab him before us. Thats just my general feeling about it though.
49ersfan77 | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Jackson going to be a lot better this year for us you got to think last year too we had four diff QB start for us that’s bad, no rhythm we will have wr go over a 1000 yards this year we ha vent had a wr go for a 1000 sense like t.o.

I think we still draft a WR just not in first round. Martz is still going to want a WR of his own to mold a bit.
MSouza | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
The key to the Johnson signing is that it is one year. I think that alone indicates that the niners will spend a first day pick on a wide receiver. Most WR in this draft class are not ready to play right away, but in a year they might blossom into some good players, this signing gives us a player that allows us to let some of our younger guys grow up rather than just throwing them into the shark tank.
MSouza | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Hey Pundit, do you think that this signing means that Takeo is a no go?
Mike | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
This is my breakdown of needs. and Thoughts on team. Again these are my opinions only.
OLINE is #1. We need help at guard and at tackle. This i think is first round need if talent is there and falls to us.
WR I think just became at earliest a 2nd round thought with more likely going to be 3rd-5th thoughts. Think personally Lelie should pack his bags and Jackson should be nervous and come into camp trying to prove he was worth that 4th we gave up for him.
Someone like a Will Franklin, Dexter Jackson, Reynaud, Hawkins, Bess. Reciever who is quick and can make plays but isn’t afraid to go over the middle. Martz will want to mold his own guy who he thinks will fit his system best.
QB i think we don’t draft anyone but if we do for competition it wouldn’t be until 6-7th round. More likely I think we sign an Undrafted QB like we have last 2 years to compete in camp and basically go onto practice squad. I think Smith’s job basically to take. Hill as backup.
RB don’t see a need to draft one since signed Foster to a deal. He’s nice backup for Gore. And with Robinson getting that extension earlier this offseason. That gives us 3 RB’s. Only way I could see going after someone is if they are way to good to pass up in later rounds. and provide more depth.
TE well Davis is there and Walker is nice backup. I think Martz uses Davis more like Chargers use Gates and split him out wide.
DLINE. I think only real major need here is a GOOD NT.We have Franklin and Cohen(rookie last year went on IR) I love Rubin from Iowa State. Think he is just what we are looking for. He takes on blockers and plugs holes up. Which is exactly what NT does. Could be nice 3rd pick if he’s still there. DE i think is not a major need now. I think Smith takes over Douglas place. Sopoaga takes over for Young. I think he is a better fit at DE then NT. Mcdonald and Oliver are good young backups. If take someone it will be more NT then anything else.
ILB Willis is the man. Signing of Thomas plus still having Ulbrich and Moore on team. If we do indeed sign Spikes then I don’t even think we look at someone in draft.
OLB. Have Lawson on one side and if he can come back 100%. set on one side. Now here is the question what to do with other side. We still have Haralson, Green and Moore. Now Haralson is solid but still trying to figure out LB. Remember he played DE in college only going to be his 3rd year in NFL. Green is Pass rusher but terrible in coverage. Moore is Sleeper in all of this. He was on IR last year. He impressed coaching staff enough in last years Senior Bowl for us to draft him. If he is back at 100% He could be what we are looking for. As far as Draft I think they are Looking at Groves if he is there he could be our 1st round pick, However Could also look to pick up a guy later in draft. I think really looking at best option available for first pick. Still think OLINE if top prospect falls is the choice.
CB This could be a sleeper first round pick for us if for whatever reason a top CB slides. This draft is deep in CB this year and can get quality guy in 3rd round. Some teams may think they can get a steal in a guy like a Cason or King in 2nd round and choose to pass on CB in 1st. Which causes a guy to slide. Harris isn’t getting any younger. Spencer is a Nickel guy and that’s about it. Brown I like what saw from him until he got hurt last season. He could if healthy challenge Harris for that starting spot.
SAFETY. SS we are set with M. Lewis. Played good last year and isn’t going anywhere. Now FS could use an upgrade. Roman is decent but not great. Goldson was a rookie last year and played pretty well but isn’t elite type. And Keith Lewis is Overrated. Solid and hard hitter but can’t cover anyone. Could see us take one early if someone like a Phillips slides to us which is possible. While i think he is a bit overrated he is best FS in class. Another option would be Morgan from NC State. Who if would have gone back to school would probably be a first round pick in 2009. Both could probably start from day 1.
Those are my thoughts. anyway.
MSouza while I’m not pundit I don’t think this has any affect on Spikes. We should still have plenty of cap space to sign him as well. Can’t see Johnson’s deal as that big since other teams were offering him multi year deals and he turned them away for 1 year deal to get stats up to get a bigger deal.
Ninerfan81 | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
The one thing that stands out on his stats over the past 5 years is how many fumbles…2 and no fumbles in the last 3 years!! If you look at his numbers from last year he’d be our top receiver…good and bad.
I like the signing, it gets us a big receiver, 6′3ft and 220lbs and a stud player.
Nice signing guys!!

I will be surprised if we don’t draft a single receiver. McCloughlan’s philosophy is always build through the draft, supplement with free agency. I think they should still use their second round pick (which isn’t that terribly far behind their first rounder) on a WR. Let’s get some competition in here! Make cuts depending on who doesn’t look good in training camp & preseason. But, they will still draft a WR, trust me. Our WR group is a laughingstock. They need to upgrade in every way possible.
red&goldforlife | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Groves or Rodgers-Cromartie if they are there in the 1st and a OT or OG in the second, safety or wide reciever in the 3rd. Quentin Demps is the guy I like at safety hope he is there in the 3rd definite potential to start.
Mike | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Cromartie won’t be there. His stock is through the roof right now. Don’t think he makes it past dallas. Hell even the Texans may take him.
Mike | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
There are 4 top corners.. McKelvin, Cromartie, Jenkins, Talib, after that it goes to Cason, King.
Sad part for Cason is if he had come out a year ago he would have been guarnteed first round pick. But stayed in an looks like at best a late first round more likely 2nd round pick though.
Anyway some like Cromartie more then McKelvin. 1 because of his roots being his cousin in Chargers CB. and had a great year. 2 b/c he has had one hell of a workout and scouts are falling in love with him. He has good footwork and speed. Also very fluid with his hips.

this is such a great offseason 4 us, we have done so much already to improve our team for the 08 season. like…
1)we released d-smith, & trent dilfer
2)kwame harris has signed with the raiders, so no more kwame. but our oline is still in need of some upgrades.
3)we helped our pass rush by signing justin smith, we will also have a healthy melvin oliver, we rsigned soppaga, & ray mcdonald showed some potential. i believe we should draft a nt in the 3rd or 4th round cuz the 1 we got right now dont cut it.
4) our wr corps is improved with bruce & johnson, bruce knows the offense & can teach it to the others, johnson is the big target that we need to have, i also think jackson will come along this season, we still draft a wr but not till the 3rd at least
5)our hiring of martz will much improve our O, he knows the passing game & will give our qb some success, * our O will finally score sum td’s
6) im still worried bout our qb situation though, not sure if smith will cut it, but i think he will do good in martz’s system, remember we drafted #1 for a reason to be our future qb, i liked what i saw from hill last year but he is just a back up & still has much to prove in the game of footabll

Expect a 2nd round WR instead of a first round. I am hoping we select Hardy in the second, he should be there, because of his off the field issue he had and all of the other WRs will most likely be gone. Good chance Hardy is a 2nd rounder. At least we are picking up some weapons.
Our #29 pick will selct either Best RT available (Cherilius) or Quentin Groves.
Bryant Johnson has the tools, can Martz bring out the best in him, if so he could easily be a number 1 WR. Johnson is 6′3″ 218 pounds and runs a 4.37 40. He also has great hands. But when you have two superstars that unleashed their potential, he got caught behind them. Our WR core is gonna be sweet on Madden!
Forensics187 | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Damn, we went from no WR’s to all that our roster can handle. With a little help on the O line, Smith has NO MORE excuses right?

No one wants DeSean Jackson? He might be available at #29. Plus he’s being mentored by Jerry Rice. But I still would take Quentin Groves first if he’s still there when it’s our turn.
Bryant Johnson was a good signing. He’s got all the physical tools to be a good receiver.

What this does is gives you our starting three receivers…..DJAX, Johnson, and Bruce…..when they bring in four it will probably be Lelie (if they are smart). I agree, the niners will probably take a wr in the second. However, now I REALLY believe they will get the best player available with each selection. Any NEW news on Spikes? If we get Spikes then we REALLY will go with the best player available.
Ryan the 1st | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
This also probably spells the end of Battle and Gilmore….especially if they draft a receiver.
Mike | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Again my opinion but I don’t think Hardy is there in the 2nd round for us. Think to many people are assuming off field issues will hold him back.He hasn’t had any issues off field for over a year now. He’s been good. Coaches at Indiana straightened him out. With his skill set, hands and decent/good speed for someone his size he’s going before us.And while some teams don’t like bad boys others don’t care as long as they can perform on the field and don’t get suspended.
Even if he makes it to 2nd round I think someone takes him before he makes it to us. Jets make sense and so do the Raiders. Hell even cowboys could take him later in draft to pair with owens. I would hate to see that but could happen.
With this signing though no way to we spend a 1st on a reciever unless the best reciever in draft falls to us. Which i wouldn’t count on. Think more like best oline, olb like groves or even if one of top corner’s slides.
And as far as Boldin beating out Johnson even though was taken later in draft. He was taken A ROUND LATER. 1 round later. No one knew he would be that good. If they did boldin would have been first wr off board or atleast in first round that year. Don’t judge one player b/c another beat him out. Doesn’t mean he’s damaged goods or a terrible player b/c he couldn’t beat out boldin who in turn is one of top wr in nfl. Just means that in that system/offense Boldin’s skill set showed and that Boldin stepped it up and showed that he should have been a first rounder that year. There are guys every draft who prove to be better then others taken in earlier rounds Just ask Tom Brady or Colston. Both late round picks that blew up. That doesn’t mean others taken before them are garbage.

And i think btwn Lelie and Battle i think it would be Lelie who gets cut. Battle runs better routes and has a little better hands. Lelie was our long threat. Johnson has speed for that now. And if draft another speedster then no need for a guy who’s best route is a GO route.
Ryan the 1st | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
If that is true then lets do the math….DJAX, Johnson, Bruce, Jason Hill, Lelie, Battle. If we keep six this will be the six (unless we draft a receiver….then Battle is toast.

Really? I would say that Battle is TOUGHER and faster, but I don’t know. I say we should go O line unless Sweed or Kelly drop to us in the first. Groves won’t be there (eventhough I wish he would). If we get Groves and Spikes we could do some damage this year. Although, I wouldn’t cry if they got a QUALITY corner. Pash IS more important though at this point.

We are going to draft a wr regardless.Someone Martz can mold and fit into his system an all. If we go and draft 2 wr’s then i could see battle getting cut. However I think Lelie is odd man out. I think Battle is ok and is the safe one of the two. I think Jackson would be cut before battle. If anything bc battle makes less and Can also play special teams if need be.

Oline should def be our first round pick I think it’s our biggest area of need. Both Tackle and Guard. I’ve been saying that all along. Just a question of does someone worth our pick slide or do we have to reach a bit. If it comes to reaching though or going BPA. I think they go BPA according to there grades of players. Nolan and McCloughan don’t seem to really reach for picks they have graded at like a 2nd in the 1st. They will either trade down or take someone in that first round grading for them thats available.
Perfect example is last year’s draft. When 2nd round came along. According to them they had no one they had graded to take for that pick and Colts came calling and thats how we got our 1st this year.
MSouza | Mar 14, 2008 | Reply
Guys we also have a guy on our roster named Ziegler at WR. After we go rid of Taylor we signed that guy from the practice squad. He can easily go away, we lost Gilmore, and if Lelie doesn’t try to run routes again, Martz will not keep him around.

It looks like the beloved Alex Smith is on the bubble according to NFL Total Access I know how some of us on here feels about him and all but I DO NOT feel comfortable about our QB position and it’s not guaranteed that Hill will play like that if he was starter I’m just only speaking on how I feel about it because when you mention Alex Smith he doesn’t wow or put fear in the hearts of the opposing teams as if he could pick a team apart and beat them in clutch situations so I say they shouldn’t had picked up the option on his contract so quicky and we need to address the QB position.

One day after San Francisco signed free-agent wide receiver Bryant Johnson to a one-year contract, the 49ers placed wide receiver Darrell Jackson on waivers, NFL Network’s Adam Schefter is reporting.
Jackson — a three-time 1,000-yard receiver for the Seahawks — struggled to be the receiver the 49ers hoped he would be when they traded a fourth-round pick to Seattle last year.
This offseason, the 49ers have signed free-agent wide receivers Isaac Bruce and Johnson, making Jackson

With some improvement on the O line(assuming we draft help here)and some much needed WR’s I think that Smith has some good help around him now. Smith WILL start the season and should perform quite well.

Even with the 49ers putting Djax on waivers I still don’t think they will go wr in the first. I have a hunch that they will trade up into the first again and have 2 first round picks. If Quenton Groves drops to 20th I think they will trade get him and go for Ol with the 29th pick. Remember this is a defensive ran team which means that defense is top priority. Wr will be adressed in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

So some other teams #3 receiver is coming in to possibly take the #1 spot? Are we supposed to be excited? We have to many #2’s and #3’s at WR. I say stop worrying so much on “character” issues and go after Chad Johnson who wants out of Cincinnati.

i completely agree with Joe about Johnson. he(1st RD)was drafted with Boldin(2nd RD) & got outplayed. then ARZ drafted Fitzgerald & got out played again. it’s a good signing but don’t expect him to be a #1, he hasn’t shown it in his 5yrs in the league. i hope he does.
in the draft, we need: 1)playmakers at WR, 2)pass rushers, 3)OL help, 4)upgrade at FS…
in that order.

I AGREE A # 1 WR WOULD BE GREAT AND MAYBE NEEDED. HOWEVER I PERSONALY THINK THAT CHAD COULD BE A GREAT PICK UP, THE MARK THAT T.O. LEFT ON THE NINERS DICTATES THAT WE GO WITH GUYS WITH LESS BAGGAGE. ANTONIO BRYANT PLAYED WELL FOR US. ACTED A FOOL THOUGH. GETTIN DRUNK ALL THE TIME HANGIN OUT WITH LOCAL RAPPERS FREE STYLIN AND STUFF. NOLAN WAS NOT HAVE’N THAT. AND THATS THE WAY IT IS FOR BETTER OR WORSE. JOHNSON IS GOING TO BE SOLID FOR THE NINERS. HE WILL HOPEFULLY PROVIDE THE DEEP THREAT THAT LELIE WAS SUPOSE TO BRING.HE HAS GOOD SIZE, AND GOOD HANDS, A HARD WORKER THAT WILL FIT IN NICELY WITH THE VARIOUS WR’S THE NINERS HAVE.
