Niners Forfeit a 5th & Swap 3rds in Tampering Case
According to Yahoo Sports, the San Francisco 49ers have forfeited their fifth-round pick in next month’s NFL draft after commissioner Roger Goodell deemed them guilty of tampering with Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs.
Goodell also determined the teams will switch picks in the third round of the April 26-27 draft. Chicago, which had the 12th pick, will get San Francisco’s seventh pick and the 49ers will get Chicago’s choice.
Goodell determined that the 49ers violated the NFL’s anti-tampering policy by contacting Briggs’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about his client during the 2007 season.
“The 49ers organization respects Commissioner Goodell’s ruling today, however we do disagree with it,” said 49ers General Manager Scot McCloughan. “This was not a malicious act; we believe that our intent was within the NFL guidelines. Going forward, we will take the necessary steps to ensure we are in compliance with the NFL’s interpretation.”
Now what I would like to know is what do the Dolphins lose for tampering with Justin Smiley considering he was signed five minutes after the start of free agency.

He chose the niners b/c the bears bitched. No other team filed a complaint. Thats why we got screwed. That on top of the spygate earlier in season Goodell just wanted to show he can rule the show and not be messed with since all the investigation still on going b/c of spygate.

I thought giving up the 5th rounder was enough. Thought the swap was a little to much. With us losing a pick though. Look for us to maybe pull a trade with someone to recoup a pick. by either trading back or trading a player or a late pick next year or something.

Yeah, I agree, we lose the 5th only and I am thinking, “Ok, this sucks, but it is better than losing a 4th like McNolan was originally fearing.” Now it is just insult to injury. COUNT ON the niners to draft two o linemen with their first four picks. Before they could go with the best player available….now, it is different. I am not saying a 5th would make or break us, but it would help us FOR SURE!!!! I expect our 5th rounder from the last draft to be a starter by the end of this season (provided we don’t draft a cb in the first day). This isn’t cool. I expect the niners to either go offense, offense with our first two picks or offense, defense. We still might go defense then offense with our first two picks, but it wouldn’t be smart given our o line situation. The o line is the one spot that is DYING for more players. We could use a TBC replacement, but not if Otah or Cherilius is still available. That will put the heat on Mr. Glass OR the niners will put him at center like he should be right now.

Can’t have pats swap picks back. Same reason to where if they wanted to punish us harder they couldn’t have gone after this years first round pick. They aren’t teams original draft picks. They were acquired via trade and If NFL looks to penalize they would go off of teams ACTUAL PICKS. Now while we do have the 29 that is OUR PICK it was recieved via trade and nfl couldn’t take it away. Just same reason why pats didn’t lose the 7 instead of the 31.

while a 5th rounder isn’t a huge deal, every draft pick counts. I think Godell is just trying to save face after being criticized (rightly so) for going easy on the Pats. Kind of like how refs sometimes make a questionable call on one team in a game, then a few plays later make a questionable call on the other team. Come on, that happens all the time, you all know what I mean. But, in a way I agree that we should go after the Dolphins to call out Godell. But, do we really want to open up this can of worms even further? After all, I’m sure we didn’t do anything that hasn’t already been done a hundred times by just about every team. So, I almost feel like we would be sinking to the Bears’ level. But, don’t we deserve to get that pick back? And, maybe it would prove that we aren’t the only ones doing this stuff…

I have the perfect fix for this situation. The Bears lost Muhammid and Berrian to free agency. The only receiver they have left is Rasheid Davis who in my opinion is a really good receiver and is also a restricted free agent. We should sign Davis from the Bears and that would really fuck with those cryng pieces of shit. I dont believe the bears have tendered Davis’s contract so we could pick him up without giving up any compensation.

I respect Matt and how he covers the niners like white on rice, but we should not COMPROMISE a quality pick in the name of getting a 5th rounder back. If the 49ers have a chance to get pass-rushing outside linebacker Quentin Groves of Auburn with the No. 29 overall pick, they might be wise to take him. Otherwise, they could look to bail out of the first-round slot in the draft.
If the Falcons are looking to move up, the 49ers could trade pick No. 29 to the Falcons to move back to No. 37 overall. Using the draft-pick trade chart, the 49ers would be owed 110 points.

I agree with you Adam although everyone want Groves, I think the smart thing would be a WR or a Lineman at least I say Jackson or Sweed if he not there trade with Atlanta, and get a WR with Atlanta second round pick whoever is avaliable (theres enough talent so a WRs got to be there). Sam Baker is still projected to be at our second so get him, if not get another lime man but Im sure he’ll be there.

perfect for what we need. We trade the 29th, (our 1st}, 75th (our 3rd), and 103 (our 4th). For Atlanta’s 37th, (2nd round) and the 48
(2nd round). with our 39th (2nd). We can get 3 starters still. OL, WR, pass rush, Most NFL people, (Not media types) think that the
strength of this draft is the 2nd round…. We don’t need more 6th
and 7th round selections. Since Nolan took over, our 3rd and later round picks haven’t helped much. The 29th isn’t a 1st round quality

Yeah, I get WHY he is saying it. However, it STILL doesn’t mean we should do it. With drafting Baker we have ONE potential starter. IF we get Caldwell HE WILL NOT START (furthermore, he will be last on the depth chart) and Laws WILL NOT be there at pick 48. IF we do something like this, in my opinion, we are trading two possible starters (our first and second pick) for ONE possible starter and some more depth. I am tired of building up depth….after what I saw last season we need PLAYERS not depth. If we stay put we can get Groves (maybe), Cherilius (WOULD start a right tackle), or maybe a decent receiver like Hardy. These guys have a potential to GET ON the field instead of holding a clip board. The more clip board holders we draft the more likely we will go 6-10 next year. We need difference makers.

Hardy will fall to the second round. Mark my words. I don’t know if he will make it to us, but he will be a second round pick at WR. There are 6 or 7 WRs considered better than him. Trust me 6 or 7 WRs won’t be drafted in the 1st round. Maybe 3 or 4. Hardy will be a second round pick, mostly because of his off the field incident in 2006, that he has completley changed from now, but the risk is still there.

All players healthy enough to take part in offseason program
In checking with the 49ers, all of the players who were injured last season are participating in the team’s offseason conditioning program.
That goes for everyone, including cornerback Tarell Brown, who sustained partial tears of the ACL and MCL in his right knee in the season-finale against the Browns. The injury did not require surgery, and Brown is back running around.
The same goes for Joe Cohen, Jay Moore, Melvin Oliver, C.J. Brewer, Manny Lawson, Alex Smith and Shaun Hill.

I am with you ninersgold, take Hardy with the second pick and smile while they do it. Groves or Cherilius work for me in the first. I just don’t think that Groves will be available. I think if he isn’t selected at 25 then he could fall to us. I don’t think the Bolts or the cowgirls would want him since they Merriman and Ware. I don’t think he is a priority. However, I think it would be more interesting if we drafted Cherilius because that would put MAJOR pressure on Mr. Glass (what I have wanted all along) to start. I KNOW Staley will start at left tackle, but at right tackle if the battle is between Cherilius and Mr. Glass I guarantee you that Nolan goes with Cherilius because he doesn’t suffer from vaginitis. IF Cherilius starts then that means he starts at center or becomes a back up. We need ONE quality tackle and ONE quality interior lineman that can play guard AND center.

on draft day. I say hell yah……..Smith and are 3rd or 4th rounder. Of course we will need to throw in Jonas (plastic man),

Ok lets just forget this idea about mcnabb already. We exercised option with Smith to extend his deal. He’s staying.
There are actually rumors though that Packers may look to take a QB in round 1 if say Brohm were to slip to them. Since Rodgers has sat on the bench for so long they are not sure if he is there guy plus he has had a problem with staying healthy and thats kinda sad since he really hasn’t played more then like 15-20 snaps in 3 years. If thats the case could see teams like Dolphins, Falcons(if they pass up on Ryan), Ravens, Bears, and Panthers looking to jump up to our spot or the cowboys spot in front of us. That would make for Ideal situation if the guy we are eyeing isnt there with our pick anymore.. I mean trade down with Phin’s and drop what 3 spots figure pick up an extra 4th.
Falcons could pass on Ryan I read a few places that they may look to take a Dorsey or Long if they fall. There new GM was from pats Org. and philosophy he learned was to build the lines then build out. So could see them take a lineman and then trade up for a brohm, or draft a henne,whose stock is climbing like crazy, or a flacco in the 2nd.

Mike I respect alot of what you post usually. I just don’t understand the man crush for Alex Smith…..He has done nothing, and
will continue to do nothing. I don’t want to here that he’s on his 4th OC. you can either pick up the open man or you can’t. Excuses are like Assholes. They all stink. Yes we need help on the line. In
2006, the line wasn’t the problem, the play calling wasn’t the problem. Smith could only complete a pass when he rolled out. He gets happy feet and becomes ineffective. The saddest part is he might win the QB competion and will have another 5-9 or 6-10 season.
We need to upgrade our QB wether or not we picked up the option. You
can’t trade a QB if you don’t act like he is a talent. If we didn’t
pick up the option, the we would never be able to unload him…

People don’t usually trade for former number high overall picks if they are QBs. If they don’t work out with their initial team they hang around the league as a back-up, David Carr, or they just go away, Akili Smith. Smith gets paid way too much money to be traded. We had to renew his option because the way his contract was set up he would’ve been paid the money anyway, he just wouldn’t have to do anything for it. I personally have a feeling that Smith will be better this year, not Peyton Manning, but better. If we sure up our offensive line and get Gore back on track I think he could make some noise this year.

Maybe the Ravens etc. What I am saying is Don’t rule out Smith being dealt some how. He is not are QB of the future. MSouza you’ve
been playing to much Madden. Smith could be better this year, which still doesn’t make him a legit starting QB. Kyle Boller comes to mind. David Carr was actually better than Smith. Smith has a couple more wins only because of Gore.
The sooner the 9ers give the offense to another QB. The sooner we
will return to respectability. Franchise QB’s find away to win. One way or another.
I don’t think Hill is the answer, but he could be a decent back up. O’Sullivan was brought in to compete for the 3rd QB job with Drew Olson.
If they don’t create a trade for an existing QB. They need to draft a QB in this years draft. And start getting him ready for the years to come.
A Smith was a huge bust for this regime. The sooner we go in a new
direction, the longer Nolan and Crew stay employed.
The only noise Smith will make this year will be shit I should be the Starter. (BooHoo…BooHoo Nolan doesn’t like me) my agent told me so. And should I hold the clipboard with my good shoulder or bad

Yeah, I MIGHT be singing that to that tune at the end of the season as well. But, this IS Smith’s make or break season. The question IS…will Martz stick around. Nolan has to realize that if his team keeps going up and down at the same time with having a new O coordinator that owners are going to say, “Hmmmm, he is a good coach on defense and knows how to motivate people, but he NEEDS someone to run his offense because he doesn’t know how!” He is VERY conservative and the NINERS HISTORICALLY DON’T PLAY RAVEN BALL! Smith WILL be our starter this coming season whether we like it or not. I agree that his contract might be a LARGE factor with his tradability, but he is going nowhere. I think Smith is either going to pleansantly surprise us or he is just going to be a bust, but if he doesn’t grade as at least a B grade QB by the end of the season then we should look elsewhere.

Correct Ryan………And if we don’t draft a QB in round 3 or 4,
then we’ve lost another year. We have to take advaantage of Martz
ability to nurture and coach up QB’s. You can bet if we take a QB
in this draft, then Martz sees the possibility of a leader. At the
Senior Bowl Martz was coaching and observing the mechanics of 6 to 8
QB’s.
Next years draft is gonna be void of top QB prospects. You can bet
that one of the youngsters has peaked interest in Martz. If Smith
turns out to be the savior so be it. Then we have a possible 2nd QB.
in waiting. If he doesn’t were 1 or 2 years ahead of schedule.
Walsh traded for Steve Young when Joe Montana was in his prime. He
also signed Garcia when Young was in his prime.
Having Smith competeing with Hill, and O’Sullivan competeing with
Olson, doesn’t make me all warm and fuzzy. I want another Ring not
a 500 season.
I don’t pretend to know if its Ainge, Johnson, Dixon, Booty, or
someone else. but we can’t let this draft class go by with out
hegeing for our future.

I can agree with that, I myself think we should go after Henne. Flacco will go too high and I don’t really care too much for Booty (doesn’t have arm strength). If we were to go after a QB in this draft I would say go after Henne or Dixon. Dixon’s stock will drop like a rock in a lake with the knee injury he sustained.

The thing is that with us signing O’Sullivan to the team (he’s Martz’ guy) and then signing Hill to a decent contract I don’t know if we will even draft a QB. I really don’t think we will. Right now we have needs that I think McNolan will go after WAY BEFORE they even consider another QB.

Thats funny I haven’t played Madden since it was on SEGA, how often do quarterbacks get dealt in this league, how often do QBs making 30 mil over 5 years get dealt in this league. His salary is an immediate turn off for anybody that might be interested in him, because if we deal him, he’s not a starter. What do you imagine us getting for him? a back-up that makes a starters salary, hmmm. So if he sucks again next year, we won’t be trading him. Trades in the NFL are really hard to make work, that is why they don’t happen all that often.

Mr MSouza I realize that dumping Smith and his contract is a huge
undertaking. Your right no one is gonna give us didly shit for him.
If we could dump him for even a 7th rounder next year. It would be
worth it. There is always someone looking for a possible #2 QB, maybe Turner San Diego, McCarthey Green Bay. They are both familiar
with him. It doesn’t matter what we get back. We get rid of the
contract. Its called cutting the embelicul chord. And yes when he
sucks again next year we won’t be able to trade him. Thats why we
need to dump him this year. When people might think like you that
he will make some noise this year. I’m sure there has to be 1 GM out
there that agrees with you. After all Maybe a team needs an over priced QB that throws more INT’s than TD’s. And doesn’t realize that
the pocket has colapsed until he’s limping off the field.
Ryan signing o’Sullivan might help the transistion. Martz was quoted
in the Sac Bee a couple weeks ago that O’Sullivan might win the starters job. probably not. But it underlines the fact that the 9ers
don’t think much about Smiths ability. Olson will be camp fodder.
No contract in the NFL is guaranteed. Plus injuries. We need to draft a QB. I know we have alot of needs. There will be alot of
players cut June 1st. A 3rd or 4th rounder isn’t gonna be a starter
this year anyway. So why not a QB??????? If we draft a WR in the 3rd
he’ll sit for a year then get cut next……..

Well by getting rid of the contract and releasing or trading him you do realize thats a HUGE CAP HIT. Not to mention we aren’t getting anything really back for him.
I don’t have a man crush on Smith either but I think without a doubt he’s more talented then Hill. With current situation at QB we have I think Smith will be our starter next season. The Martz thing was more likely a joke then anything else since he has never seen hill or smith play in person. Tape is one thing LIVE is another.
Ryan.. Henne’s stock is jumping too and most have him as top 4 qb now. Who could go as high as top to middle of round 2. We have more needs then qb in round 2. One being oline. 2 being reciever. 3 being Olb and 4 being secondary.
I would be all for grabbing dixon in like 6th round though if he’s there. Could be really good steal if he can come back healthy after tearing his acl.
And if you shop Smith you’d be better off cutting him. Most teams aren’t going to give you crap back right now. Especially if they know that he’s on the bench b/c then they will just sit and wait till we cut him. Same reason while Mcnabb has been in a ton of rumors no deal has ever been struck b/c a lot of teams think if they don’t want him he will just be cut. McNabb has a huge issue with actually finishing a season healthy.
All I was saying before was that McNabb isn’t the answer either and Lets not even go there with that rumor. Those rumors have been going on since the middle of last season.
And Jerry you can’t say Smith won’t do anything. No one knows that. If everyone could predict which player was finally going to break out then HALF OF THIS NFL WOULD BE CUT SINCE EVERYONE WOULD KNOW WHO WOULD AND WOULDN’T PLAY WELL. Give him another chance with a solid oc. He did play well once with turner.Don’t forget that. Lets see what he can do before you throw him in the trash. Do remember he was our first pick for a reason. Had to have seen something in him. Me personally on Smith I don’t think he will ever be a superstar like a brady or a manning.And you don’t need a SUPERSTAR TO WIN A SUPERBOWL. Well Smith’s first season the team was so bad it was just bad for everyone no one could have done well i don’t care who you would have put back there. And last year until he got hurt he wasn’t playing that bad. All I am saying IS GIVE THE KID ANOTHER CHANCE. YES A KID. He still is a kid the youngest qb in the league. Lets see what he can do in an Offense better suited for him. He played spread in college and turned into #1 pick in draft. Martz pretty much SPREAD OFFENSE. Lets see what kid can do when back in element he is really made for. Notice Smith has played better in Shotgun sets. When he was in shotgun he read field better well Martz uses a lot of shotgun formations. I think the Offense is really suited for his style. He did play it extremely well in college. Now he’s back in a very similar system. I think he will play well again. If i am wrong I am wrong. HOWEVER I AM WILLING TO TAKE THE CHANCE.
We are all running low on patience with the team b/c we are all tired of losing. But I think we need to be smart and not just say screw it and lets just cut everyone no one likes and start from scratch and rebuild all over again.. yea thats the answer.. more losing.. GIVE THE KID ANOTHER CHANCE. Thats all I am saying.
Also I think Nolan has no say in Offense decisions. I think its completely MARTZ call. Just as it was when Turner was here and he ran the offense side of the ball. As for nolan and smiths feud. According to article in sac bee it has been smoothed over this offseason. There’s link.

and We all know jennings sux. But news flash so does rest of the nfl. We can’t expect to trade our scraps and scrubs away unless you want more scraps and scrubs to take there place.
This is Nolans year I think if we don’t win atleast 8 games this season i think he is gone. I also don’t think martz goes anywhere after this year. I think Martz could be thinking well if nolan does go next season or in 2 years when his deal is up.Then he can step up as HC to replace nolan.

Nice read Mike…..As far as its all smoothed over. Of course there
in 1st place with everyone else. Wait until he gets beat out. Or even worse starts getting sacked and gets reinjured. Then you have
the (youngest, injuryprone, 4 OC, QB bust in the league) last year he was terrible in our 2 lucky wins at the start of the season. Then
he got hurt and was even worse. The 1st year he was a rookie OK. the
2nd Turner had to keep rolling him out to get a completion. I don’t
want to rebuild every couple of years. But when you make a mistake,
then you rectify it. Martz has seen our QB play when he was in Detroit. Just imagine how impressed he was. I agree lets see what he
can do. and hope he all of a sudden can look off the primary rec.
That would be a hell of a improvement.
If were gonna have a chance to get a QB that Martz thinks can become
a starter. I think the franchise has to draft him, they keep saying
best player available. And this year QB won’t be exempt. I like Josh
johnson San Diego. But what do I know. Who ever Martz thinks is the guy so be it.

I dont think he gets beat out for starter spot I think he wins it. Again thats my thought on it atleast. And a few on this site have agreed with that. So I am not alone in thinking Smith will be starter next season. This we may disagree on you may think anyone else would be better..
And I again will say I don’t think he will have any riff with nolan again this season. As bad as it looks on Smiths side it looks just as bad on nolans. I think Nolan just keeps his nose out of Offense. It doesn’t belong there anyway he knows nothing about it.
I think nolan lets Martz do his thing and work with offense. Nolan showed last year after hostler did so bad and tried to help him out.. Nolan knows nothing on offensive side of ball. I think if any riff starts it would be btwn Smith and Martz not nolan. And I don’t think that will happen. Players have said that Martz is tough and pushes you harder then ever BUT HE GETS THE BEST OUT OF THE TALENT HE HAS TO WORK WITH. Nolan just wants to keep his job. Which is one reason he brought martz in. Hoping he could take over offense side of ball and turn this offense around. It has potential. Just have to believe. Anything can happen.

think. We’ll come out of the draft with 1 or 2 OL. Hopefully they can contribute. I like Groves but I think he’ll be gone. the WR that
will be left when we pick are 2nd and 3rd round talent. I think we can trade back a couple of spots get who we want and pick up a 3rd or 4th. Maybe can use one of those on a QB. I don’t like Hardy. He
doesn’t block. He beats up women and kids. And he runs lousy routes.

Well guy id like in 3rd is rubin although i have said that alot so i think everyone knows by now. Think he ideal fit for us at NT. Would love Cherillus if he falls to us. Would def. secure out tackle spot for years with Staley on left and Cherillus at right.
I would like Franklin in 4th if he’s there. Also wouldn’t mind Dexter Jackson if he’s there.
I can honestly say I’ve said it a few times too about us trading back to pick up additional picks. And if we do that and one of them is a qb then I’m fine with it. But with us losing 5th rounder that leaves us with 6 picks. I just don’t want to waste a pick that could be taken on a player that is a NEED position. Our need spots are oline(guard and tackle), wr, cb, fs, nt, olb(although hoping moore comes back healthy and takes that or Harylson takes it).. I’d rather focus more on those positions first. But if a qb is bpa in 6th or 7th round then go for it. but just don’t see it as a 3rd or 4th . Especially since we don’t have that 5th anymore

Look. Alex Smith has everything it takes to become a Great QB. Good arm,great accuracy,mobility,and a great head on his shoulders. Unfortunately he has had the worst receivers in the league on his side. Mike Martz even said he has all the tangibles.I think he is gonna be our QB for a long time, so all you Smith haters sit back and relax.

Jerry, I just don’t understand, you say that you don’t want us to rebuild every couple of years but we have to cut ties with everyone who isn’t a pro bowler and draft replacements. That is called rebuilding. Personally I didn’t want Smith when we drafted him, I thought Braylon Edwards was the talent of the draft and thought that we should’ve taken him, but now that we have him you have to give the kid a shot. People were all over Michael Vick’s nuts because he produced high light reals, but he really did suck. After teams stopped his scrambling, he was very beatable. It wasn’t that he was a bad quarterback it was because he wasn’t pro ready. Neither is Alex, he came from a system that does not translate to the NFL. The same thing will happen to Tebow. He needs time to adjust, and he was playing decent before he got hurt last year, he kept in the Steelers game and we probably could have one it if Lelie ran the right route at the end of the game.
Also, you say we should trade Alex now before everybody figures out he sucks? People aren’t even sure if his arm is going to heal properly. There is 3 years of footage to prove that he isn’t the greatest. We aren’t going to trade Smith, it is not going to happen, even if we wanted to, it wouldn’t happen. Its not an issue of what we’d get back for him, it is an issue of who would take him. Get over your hatred of Alex Smith, he isn’t the only thing wrong with the niners and drafting a fourth round quarterback sure isn’t going to make us winners overnight, so it just doesn’t seem like the greatest solution.

Now its 2009. Our new head coach is Mike Martz. Our starting QB is
O’Sullivan. (Didn’t draft a QB in the 2008 draft). Dam it..Smith is
recovering form another surgery, caused from becoming a statue in the pocket. His agent recommends Scott Heiber Lasik surgery, to find
the open reciever. McCloughan is told he now has one more year to
turn it around. Hill is spending his time on the bench expanding his
retirement portfolio, after 2008 contract. 2009 record 4-12. Come
on 2010.
Alex Smith is in an open comp for the starting QB. (he has all the
tangibles) arm strngth, size, mobility, great in the community. But
his contract is to big we can’t trade him, but hell this will be the
year he makes some noise. The Niners give him another chance, because now he’s had 5 OC. Didn’t have very good WR. He needed a line. We could of won one more game if Lelie would of ran the right
route. And if the play calling would of been better then he would of
been better…..2010 record 4-12. Come on 2011.
Now its 2011 Singletary is our new Head Coach. Jed York is the new
GM says he’s gonna draft a new franchise QB. Only problem is we need
more depth at OL, WR, LB, DE, CB, S, RB, TE. So he waits till the
7th round and drafts a QB. Thats OK because the Smith lovers say
were gonna give him 5 years because he’s got all the tangibles. The
game day tickets are now $200 each. 2011 record 2-14.
Every year we need depth at other positions. Maybe I’m old school
but I was raised, the most important are, QB, OT, CB. Its sad when
Chicagos situation of Grosman/Orten looks a whole lot better than
Smith/Hill/O’Sullivan.
Maybe Rip Van Winkle had it right. Go to sleep while Smith learns
how to win 8 or more games a season……………..

Its not his fault we drafted him were we did. If he doesn’t have a
career ending injury, he probably would of been a great back up QB.

Ok 2nd half of your draft aint there.. I’ll start from 7th and work my way up. Dixon maybe there in 7th but someone may take chance on him in 6th hoping that they get a steal. Dejuan Morgan is considered the 2-3 best safety in the draft. He’s gone by 3rd round at the latest.
6th round Franklin does not fall that far. Is gone somewhere in 4th more then likely same thing with dexter jackson. Although Jackson could jump to 3rd our fall to the 5th. He won’t fall to 6th though. Why b/c he also has return man ability. Now 4th I’ll give you as Johnson, ainge could be there. However a QB in the 4th is NOT A NEED. Sorry but we have more issues then a QB that early on. And Royal b/c of that return ability has jumped into the 3rd. That combined with fact he had a great senior bowl. ok 3rd round Caldwell I think goes somewhere in the 2nd. Hill and Rubin should be there. 2nd round. Cherillus does not make it to us in the 2nd hell he may not make it to us in the 1st. Also don’t think Balmer a 3-4 de is a 2nd round need. We just signed Justin Smith theres one end. And Sopoaga takes the other end spot where I think he is better suited. We need NT not DE. Laws could be there but again I think he would be better off at DE spot he likes to penitrate not take on blockers. He was the only bright spot for ND this past year though.
First round I love albert and would love for him to fall to us however I don’t think he makes it pass the steelers who need to replace faneca at guard. I like both groves and cherillus just think tackle is a Bigger need so I’d go that way. However thats me.

Now about your little rant as far as Smith as King. NO ONE IS SAYING THAT. We are all saying give him a chance with martz. Lets see what he’s got. He knows its his make or break year. Either he performs or he doesn’t and he’s out as qb. Just have to have hope and believe that he breaks through that wall and finally puts it all together.He has shown us he does have talent. We all are giving the kid one last chance with martz to show what hes got. I think this offense is best suited for him. I think Martz system is perfect for Smith. Thats my opinion though.
Now as far as him getting hurt again in 3 years of being sacked like crazy this is first serious injury he has had. So there is no history of him getting seriously hurt. Stop jumping to conclusions about how you think its going to work out with smith starting.No one knows. Hell 2 years ago when turner came here analysts didn’t think we could do anything. and we won 7 games. Turner left and still had people thinking we could break out. Unfortunately Hostler was worse OC anyone has ever seen and our offense couldn’t move the ball. That the fact our oline was just bad and our wr dropped half balls thrown at them.
Have to have faith that with new oc in who actually knows how to run an offense. Things have a high chance of turning around. And lets face it we all know if we are terrible again this year that coaches and players will be gone next season. Thats alot of pressure to win. BUT after last season no one has expectations of us doing anything this year. Maybe be under the radar and win 8 games. who knows. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
You’re frustrated and It’s clearly obvious we all are frustrated and tired of losing. HOWEVER we all have the extra patience to see what they can do on the field with martz rather then just writing everyone off like you are doing.

Mike the 49ers updated web site has Soapaga as back up NT now and
Fields as starting UT and McDonald as starting DE. Of course they
still have to adjust for Smith at UT. Nolan said 2 weeks ago on the
Razor and Mr T show. That McDonald was the DE going into the mini-
camps. I realize that they will be rotating. Because Groves won’t
last. We can’t count on TBC for our pass rush. Were gonna have to

I saw a special on i think it was espn or may have been on nfl network before the combine or during it and they were talking about morgan and they said how if he had stayed in school that one extra year to get more experience that next year he would have been probably top safety off board.

I just can’t see us paying Soapoga all that money to be a backup. If thats what he is then we should have just let him go rather then pay him as much as we did. B/c for a backup we could have just drafted a rookie and payed him 1/4 of what we are paying soapoga.
I agree we can’t look to TBC as our pass rush. He is a backup and thats what he should always be. He is not anything more then a backup. Balmer could go in the first round which is very likely however. If you want an end i’d rather go with laws then. I think he has better pass rush ability that could command that double team. Not b/c he’s taking on blockers but b/c he can get through the line and that will force teams to double him or atleast bring over that rb for extra blocking

I hear alot of bull**** about smith being the reason for our 5-11 record. I suppose there isn’t 52 people on the team to also blame. Not including the coaches(notably Jim Hostler).I suppose blaming that our receivers could’nt catch a cold.I suppose the half a second Smith had to throw the ball was plenty of time(I recall the sack that smashed Smiths shoulder was by a 300 pound lineman that wasnt even blocked).I suppose the fact that our offensive line gave up the most sacks in the NFL would’nt be a factor.I suppose that being 27 in rushing offense helps out our QB greatly.I am sick and tired of you haters putting the blame for the records,and the bad stats our TEAM has had the last few years completely on Smith.Look at the time the best Qbs in the league(Brady and P.Manning)have in the pocket.No im not comparing him to them,just time in the pocket.I believe he will be a great QB with some consistent receivers,a consistent offensive coordinator that is willing to takethe time to pushSmith to the next level.Mike Martz is perfect for Smith.He runs a wide open offense just like Smith did in Utah.Our Defense is gonna be off the hook,and we picked up Allen Rossum for Special Teams.Boys cheer up and have some faith in our QB, he has worked his ass of to win for us and I believe we are in for a great season.Hang in there.

Nobody is anointing Alex Smith the king Jerry, that is my point. I don’t think anybody on this site thinks that Alex Smith is terrific, but just because we aren’t ready to pull the plug on our investment yet it doesn’t mean that we think he is the second coming of Christ and Montana combined. We get it, he isn’t very good right now, but do you really think that Erik Ainge or Dennis Dixon, who may not physically ever be able to roll out of the pocket again, is better in one year than Alex Smith. Your prediction of the future assumes that as soon as we get rid of Smith we’ll make the playoffs because any idiot not named Alex Smith or anyone else on the 49ers roster can play quarterback in the NFL, and they are so easy to find, all we need is a fourth or sixth rounder and we’ll be winning super bowls again.
And I didn’t say that we would’ve won more GAMES if Lelie ran the right route, I said that we may have one the Steelers GAME, I don’t blame our lack of success on a receiver that almost never saw playing time, but he did run the wrong route, what was supposed to be a sharp comeback he rounded off into some kind of piece of shit route that would’ve gotten me chewed out in Pop Warner. The game is not easy for a young player, ts even harder when the team around you doesn’t give you any help. Every quarterback makes terrible mistakes all the time, the difference is that they have great players around them that cover it up.

Adam this just in Bush is gonna end the war, and fix the economy,
befoe he leaves office. Hey you gotta believe. hang in there. We
don’t even know if he’s gonna be our starter yet. Remember 2006
he played every snap. He had an OL. He had #1 RB in the NFC. He had
one of the top 5 OC in the league. 7 wins thank you Frank Gore. The
only games Smith helped win were when he scrambled. He can’t find the open reciever. Unless its the primary rec or a screen to Gore.
I’m gonna let this subject die out for now. and let Alex show every
one what he’s capable of.
Its great to have faith in your team. But Blind Faith is foolish.
We need to hedge for the future. Keep all options open on draft day.
Supply the players, and let them battle it out.

MSouza I don’t think that a mid or late round draft pick is gonna be
ready next year. It will take time 2 to 3 years. What I’m saying is
we need to have someone in the wings learning from Martz, while we
have Martz on our staff. If we don’t draft someone I would like to
think that it is because Martz didn’t think that the young QB’s
weren’t adequate. Not because they don’t want to hurt Alex’s feelings. If he wins the job so be it. If he continues to struggle.
Which I think he will, then it would be nice to have another QB learning the system from Martz. There is a reason why Hill and
O’Sullivan have been in the league for 6 years or so, and not made
there mark. They have limited ability. Good for emergency use only.
Nobody wants the Niners to win more than me. i’m looking at the
franchise for years to come. Not just the 2008 season.

O’sullivan was a sixth round pick. You said it yourself he’s been in the league for six years or so and hasn’t made any noise. We could use every pick this year on a quarterback and they could all suck, all I’m saying is that give this QB core a chance. I want the franchise to win in the future too, but I think that the best chance is with Smith or Hill, hell if O’Sullivan wins the job then so be it. I’m just tired of this rebuilding process and thats all we are ever going to do if we expect every player to pan out before their fifth season. There is a reason you can’t judge a draft class for five years, it takes that long to find out what you got.

when did it become 5 years it use to be 3 years. Every coach had a 3 year plan. Your 1/2 right one of these 3 guys are gonna start for
us this year. I’m talking about drafting a future QB (FOR IN THE
FUTURE)…….I never said blow up the team. And or draft every QB
available. If Martz feels that there is a QB in this draft, that
could be better then the 4 we got. Then draft him and start giving
him reps in practice so that he’ll be ready in 2 or 3 years. If Alex
is the starter for the next few years so be it.
The whole point is to take advantage of Mike Martz ability to groom
Quarterbacks. If Alex steps up and keeps winning the job great. But
i’m tired of a sub 500 team. Management keeps saying there gonna
get better players to compete. I think it should be at every position including the QB. Which it hasn’t been since Alex got drafted. Martz if successful won’t be here very long. he’ll be offered another head coaching job.
What makes Alex Smith any different than any other draft pick. San
Diego had Drew Brees and went ahead and drafted P Rivers. Rivers
in his 2nd year beat out Brees and they let him go as a free agent.
Where did you get 5 years……..They become free agents in 3 or 4
and there usually gone. The only place they get 5 years is when the
Yorks are signing the checks.
Hopefully are team will improve after this draft and our management
will truly draft the best available..And quit worring about hurting
Alex feelings. Its time to put up or shut up for Alex.
I think it was 1979 when Steve DeBerg was our starting QB he was
an under 500 QB. But he had all the tangables, (he was much better
than Alex). When Walsh drafted Montana in the 3rd round all the
media said why would you waste a 3rd round pick on a QB, you got
DeBerg. 2 years later Montana won the starting job. And Walsh when
asked why Montana was going to be the starter, he said DeBerg was
just good enough to lose.
