MMP: Gerald Austin is Old
The 49ers made it through the first two weeks without any significant injuries, but after the game against the Steelers the injury bug has finally made it’s way on the team. Manny Lawson is already done for the season and Vernon Davis finished the game on the bench. Let’s just hope the injuries that appeared Sunday are minor.
- Gore had precautionary xrays on his hand that turned out negative. (Godspeed Frank, we need you.)
- Crumpacker hands out game grades. (Hey at least the offense didn’t get an F.)
- Derek Smith is still on the field. (Jesus H. Christ, is there anyway they can bench him.)
- Andy Lee for Pro Bowl. (Now you know why it’s Monday Morning Punter.)
- Early reports on Vernon’s injury is that it is a knee sprain. (No word on if he’ll miss any time.)
- The 49ers revamped secondary held the Steelers starting receivers to 51 yards on 4 receptions. (Hey Hines how’d that Willis and Roman hit feel?)
- Unfortunately the 49ers linebackers allowed 91 yards, and 2 TD’s to the Steelers tight-ends.
- Gerald Austin still doesn’t know what constitutes a catch. (Isn’t there a mandatory retirement age. At least he should have used Nolan’s glasses.)

Andy Lee has been awesome. I still can picture the 70+ in the Rams game!
Nedney completes a solid kicking game that was severely lacking in recent years. (Anyone remember Cortez? I know Larry Allen does when he went to Dallas, LOL)
God bless Frank
And hope VD is okay. He finally showed some strength before the big hit and “CATCH”. (Friggin’ refs)
First, I love Clements…. but was he supposed to be the deep coverage of the one TD that Smith was barely covering underneath? The replay showed the receiver in the center to already be covered. Or was this like last weeks TD, where Clements tried to come over and help after the pass was already in the air?

Low…I believe it was Smith’s man and Clements came over to help…

Smith was peeking into the backfield for some reason. His responsibility was the short flat and he blew it. Oddly enough that was his best play of the game because he almost tipped that ball.

ALEX SMITH IS NOT SHOWING ANY PROGRESS AFTER NORV TURNERS TAYLOR-MADE FOR SMITH OFFENSE IS GONE. YES ITS THE SAME OFFENSE BUT NOT FOR SMITH AS WE CAN SEE. THIS IS HIS THIRD YEAR AND IF HE CANT SHOW ANY PROGRESS (CUT HIM) BECAUSE ALL UP FRONT MONEY IS OVER. THE GUY CAME FROM A SHOTGUN OPTION OFFENSE, HE IS NOT A REAL QB.

First off i think Alex is starting to come on, there were a lot of dropped balls in that game. and the only INT of the season he has wasnt even his fault.. it looked like Jacobs didnt even know what was going on!! I think we have to hang in there with him…
Second did anyone else read what Tomlin said after the game??? that bogus call was “a great call the refs always get it right”.. WTF if that was against his team he would be saying that was the worst call of all time. I agree that one play doesnt determine the WHOLE game.. but thats as close as it comes… totally took ALL our momentum away!! the ball was locked ion his arm his shoulder hit the ground and the ball came out, i would go as far as to say that happens once a game and the refs usually do get that right.. that was HORSESHIT, and the league should recognize it!
Finally, D SMITH is slow and terrible.. PLEASE can we have Harolson/Navies, Willis, Moore, TBC.. we would be so nasty.. but as a whole yesterday we needed to tackle better we missed about FOUR sacks that i counted (which i assume had something to do with BIG ben being… BIG) but overall i feel good about next week and being 3-1, just start tackling people in the backfield

“Official review — The disputed incompletion to Vernon Davis in the third quarter wasn’t the only play the 49ers were steaming about. On the ensuing series, Roethlisberger threw the ball to an empty spot on the field to avoid a sack. The officials, however, ruled Roethlisberger was out of the pocket as he threw — thereby ruling out an intentional-grounding call — when it appeared he clearly was not. Players also were angry over a late holding call on cornerback Nate Clements in the second quarter.
“Hey, we’re in Pittsburgh,” explained Jackson, who saw a few calls go the Steelers’ way in the Super Bowl two seasons ago as a member of the Seattle Seahawks.”
The more I think about this game the more pissed off i get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone in the last post said this is a rebuilding year. I’m sorry that’s bullshit, I don’t want us to think that way. We need Receivers. All I heard during the draft from you guys was that we need no receivers. The receivers we have were great, and that we should be set. We’ll I’m sorry to dissapoint, but our receivers are shit, with the exception of Lelie. The receivers we have lack heigth which is necessary for that position in today’s game. their are some exceptions every once in a while like Steve Smith, and other short receivers, burt those are rare. In todays game you need to be 6′2 and above to be taken seriuosly in the receiving corp! We need those bigger targets in the outfield to cause mismatches! We don’t have that, so our receivers can’t get the ball. It would be mutch easier if for Alex Smith if he had bigger targets he could see down field, instead of struggling to throw into the middlew of a safety and a corner. Look at the most sucessful Receivers, B.O. Randy Moss the guys are more effective because they have a step abovbe the competiotion vs. a small receiver. They make football look easy with their leaping ability, and size and Heigth. I pushed that we needed receivers during the draft, but none listened. Everyone said defense wins championship, but how can you win without a high octane offense scoring TD’s. You can’t count on the defense getting interceptions and fumbles each and every play. A good defense might cause problems and prevent the offense from scoring every so often, but a Good team like the Patriots will figure how to get into the endzone most of the time. It may not be a high scoring game, but a elite offense will mastermine the defense eventually. This weekend against the Steelers was an example. The steelers started out having a hard time, but then their offense adjusted and scored points. My point is that you need an offense to put points on the board at the end of the day! Our defense is Excellent so we need to get a trade for a receiver or like someone said rotate Vernon Davis to receiver!

The problem is not Alex, it is the receivers!

I had alomost forgotten the “in the pocket” non call. Maybe next game Helen Keller won’t be our Ref….
Seriously though. Step up receivers….please

for the dude that said alex is not a real QB “fuck you” this kid id better than tim Rattay ever was. Its the coaching and receivers holding his talent back. His specialty is the deep pass but weres ashley lelie in the game, hes benched!!! bad coaching.

Our receivers are killing us! For whats its worth, I heard some guys talking on the radio after the game about how are receivers are running very poor routes and that that explains our poor passing game and the reason Alex is having a hard time developing any rythm with them. Moreover, we need a #1. Curse me for saying this, but watching Owens last night reminded me of when we used to have one, one that would run the route, catch the ball, and get the YAC.

the play calling was better this week but i say we need to open things up with smith more. teams are stackign 8 in the box, we say we want to run gore to free things up for alex but as of right now i think smith needs to open things up for gore a little bit. smith looked good toward the end of the game, he made some nice passes. i think we should still pound gore early but we need some plays called for smith to throw downfield a bit. . . . Lee = pro bowl
Spivey | Sep 24, 2007 | Reply
The quick fi is roating Vernon Davis to receiver! He’ll get open more and find more routes, and that’s what he wants. He has the height of a receiver, and the weight of a Tight End.
Jason | Sep 24, 2007 | Reply
I dont understand why everyone is calling for lelie, you obviously didnt watch the game when he had a perfectly thrown ball come his way and he pulled a Lloyd and pulled back instead of reaching fully out for the ball, he half assed the cut-in route, he is one of those players that only give 100% effort 30% of the time, that is obviously what Nolan sees from him, he will never be a great WR so quit with bitching about him being on the bench, he will be off the roster next year the rate he is going. VD on the other hand showed why he needs the ball in his hands, take away that one 3rd down drop he played flawless, Battle made plays when he got the ball most of the time, I think Jackson just needs more time with Alex before they start clicking better, this will improve through the season. And Walker needs to be in the lineup more with VD, he made plays when he had the opportunity. Even tho we lost I was happy with how we attacked on offense right out of the gates, and we need to keep up the no huddle offense it worked pretty well, Alex was in charge and showed great poise. we need to keep this mentality for the rest of the season, play offense the way we play defense, our o-line hurt our offense all the way around, i think we need to shake up the line to show them that if they half ass it out there they will see the bench.

Jason,Thats why V.D. needs to be rotated to Wide receiver. He’ll get the ball 90% of the time, just like that traitor T.O. V.D. wants the ball, and this way he’ll be open enough on a receivers route to get it. We will win games if they experiment and try him at receiver! Does anyone think this is a good idea! Send this to the 49ers/coach.Walker is good, and he can feel in for V.D.

This makes sense, the experiment will work!

The problem is there is to much Nedney on the field. All field goals and no TD’s. Gore is our redzone, if Gore doesn’t run it in we kick it plain and simple.

Hcone | Sep 24, 2007 | Reply
V.D. should not be a full-time WR, he may play WR in some packages that’s fine. The running game needs him to block and to control the middle of the field. So the safeties and LBs wont stack the box.
To whoever said Lelie is great, he’s so great he’s sitting on the bench and when he was called upon he drop a nice pass.
Look at Atlanta and Jacksonville, all their receivers are at least 6′3″, but they are not exactly scare any secondaries.
Also, T.Holt, S.Moss, H.Ward, M. Harrison, are all 6′0″ of under.
mouse | Sep 24, 2007 | Reply
VD can’t play WR man. He doesn’t have the quickness to make the cuts for it. You can’t just put him out there and expect him to torch DB’s because he ran a 4.3 at the combine. That’s seriously overplayed. He’s not quick enough.

its an MCL sprain….it says he should be out a few weeks. The question is…will we get him back for the Giants or will it be the Saints.

Vernon being hurt seriously sucks. Spivey you’re retarded. Vernon is a TE…period. We are not going to change him to a WR…..period. The only bright side to him getting hurt is Alex will have to throw more to our wide outs. Jackson is going to have a big game against his old team. Gore is going to have a big game going against his bitch Babineau. We really missed Manny this week. There is no way Pittsburgh’s TE would have killed us if Manny was in there. Bench D. Smith now.

Here’s for all you Alex haters:
It’s time to go to a different model, beginning with a playmaking wideout who can help quarterback Alex Smith’s development. “He played very smart and very safe,” Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu said of Smith. “There’s a few routes that a lot of people would have thrown that probably would have been intercepted. Otherwise, he may have taken a sack or thrown the ball away, which is very smart.”
That’s for all you morons that keep saying our receivers are open.

That blind ref is 66 years old. I think the maximum age should be 45. You need to be able to run and keep up with athletes, think fast, and be accurate, not ready to retire. And to you mr. austin, why don’t you BARELY touch a 10,000 volt wire. Still hurts? Then it was a CATCH, you senile fool.

I’m right here and he did fine.If you want to criticize somebody criticise Banta-Cain. D.Smith didn’t play great but he was fine. I actually thought we looked pretty good. Our biggest problem is our recievers. But we were pretty good. We’ll cope with our injuries and come home and whoop Seattle. And then we’ll beat Baltimore.
