Hill Gets Three Year Deal
The 49ers have reached an agreement with quarterback Shaun Hill on a three-year contract. Hill was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the month.
“It’s very exciting to be a Niner for another three years and I appreciate the opportunity they’re giving me,” Hill said today.
He said he expected to receive the paperwork Tuesday and then he would sign the deal. Hill, 28, will get a chance to compete against Alex Smith for the starting job under new offensive coordinator Mike Martz.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to play for coach Martz,” Hill said. “He’s done some neat things with quarterbacks in the past. And I’m similar to the guys he’s had in the past.”
Hill said his style is a lot like that of Marc Bulger.
“I play the same kind of game he does,” Hill said. “He has a quick release. He doesn’t have the strongest arm in the world, but he gets the ball out on time and in rhythm.”
Terms of the contract were not immediately known, but you can expect the contract to be worth approximately $2 million a year with playing-time bonuses that could further compensate Hill if he were to win the starting job. Typically, a signing bonus on such a contract would be around $2 million.

Im kinda excited about this. As a lifetime Niner fan this is good news to me, nothing wrong with a little competition in my book. I liked what Hill did in the couple games he played this past season. I think he did a good job leading our team down the field.

I agree, funny thing is he thinks that hs is like Marc Bulger, I don’t think he is that accurate, or even nearly as good as Bulger. Shaun Hill can’t throw the ball 20 yards accurately, unless Martz fixes him also. I think Alex SMith is worth fixing more than Hill. I think people are over reacting just because they saw an offense that was average. Our defense is capable of holding our opponents down to 17-20 points a game. (that is pretty good) problem is our offense scored less than 10 points, making us look really bad. Just because Shaun Hill had two games where he faced second team defense and a terrible defense, and he scored 20 points, everyone thinks he is amazing. Alex Smith under Martz is probally capable of scoring well over 30 points. Shaun Hill ran a simple below average offense for two games, and I know a below average offense looks amazing compared to 10 points a game. I thought Hill was the answer too, for about one week. Hill had Tolner, improving o-line, didn’t have shoulder injury, and he had easy ass competition. Didn’t anybody see Hill in preseason? He sucks! He threw a horrible INT in the end zone from 3 yards out! I remember that is why we lost the preseason game against Denver. He is a career back up, he is too old to become an amazing lucky find that could lead us. I remember this guy that was a back up for Jacksonvile had two great games (excellent) than he got traded to Buffalo as a starter and he ripped ass (he sucked)I don’t remember who he is now, but that is what would probally happen with HIll. What about Tim Rattay, he was a good backup, than when he started he sucked too. There is a huge difference between a guy like Tony Romo, he wasn’t a career back up, Parcells picked him up himself and was going to start him this year anyways. Show me a good example of a back up that played two or a few great games as a back up, and than became amazing as a starter. Hill is not the answer, especially with Martz here. Maybe we should trade him for a 4th rounder (if that is even possible), and we would watch as he chokes away somewhere else on another team. He is a great backup, not a starter.

I see Shaun Hill as new hope. He may not be the answer, but I’d like to believe he wants to win, and will do anything to get there. I remember watching a game where he was on special teams, and he ran down field and made the tackle. On that day right there I was impressed by his will to play football.
As for Alex Smith, I love the idea of this guy. When healthy, he did play as though he was greatly improving, it wasn’t until after he was injuried that he play bad. I believe when he comes back he will be better than Shaun Hill.
I don’t know how effective this maybe, but I would like to see the 49ers play D.Walker [TE] at fullback. If they can work on his blocking, he’ll be a great out of the back field threat.

NinerinTN - you beat me to it. Jeff Garcia was a back up as well. Not for long but would have if Lawrence Phillip could pick up a f’g blitzing Aeneas Williams. I hope Phillips is washing cars.
As for Hill, he has the release Martz wants, patient and tough. But Alex is young with all the physical potential to be a good QB. Just needs go back to the old tire swing and fix his accuracy (not literally but you get the drift) and listen to Martz.
For those saying this guy is not a Martz guy because he was not like X. Martz knows what he is doing with an offense and will use the talent he has. He has never had an RB like Gore, but he is going to run the tread off that kid.

I’m glad we are keeping Hill around. I’m not yet convinced that Hill is the answer, but competition for Alex may force him to improve. I say don’t stop there. Bring in another free agent with potential or use a middle-round pick for another QB. Having Smith as our only viable option at QB is stupid, as this past year has shown. Let’s mix things up a bit!

Steve Young? are you kidding me, him being a back up was a joke, the Niners picked him up for the soul purpose to replace Montana, once Montana had reached his downward side of his career. They competed almost every year for the starting QB posistion. I said b4 that Martz could easily make Hill good by playing to his strengths, but he isn’t accurate on intermediate to deep throws. Besides I think Smith has more strengths than Hill does, which is more for Martz to work with, and for Martz to make even better.
Did Jeff Garcia play two games very well, and as a career backup? NO. Hill is a lot like Garcia though, except Garcia was more mobile (not anymore probally, but still)Also Garcia had a fricken monster WR that would make big plays off of his short passes, which is why Garcia was sucessful. Hill doesn’t have that. It is very very easy to stop the short passing game. All you have to do is put pressure from blitzing one or two players, and double cover the the other two recievers with the safeties. Hill would be under pressure look for the what’s open under neath and find nothing, and if someone was open deep down field, he won’t have the arm strength (especially under pressure) to get the ball to him.

I’m glad they resigned Hill, but lets not get ahead of ourselves here. We signed a good back up QB. He didn’t exactly beat some power houses while Smith was out. Smith WILL BE THE STARTER whether people here like that fact or not. There are no QB free agents that I would take over Smith at this point. Martz will fix him. If not then we go to Hill, but until we solve the MANY OTHER holes we have on offense then we’re pretty much patting ourselves on the back for an accomplishment that everyone expected the niners achieve since the game against the Browns. Re-sign Soap and Douglas then we will talk. Get Dilfer and Derek Smith to retire then we will talk. Get four QUALITY free agents then we can feel good. Add a good draft WITH that then we can feel optimistic. Since McNolan is saying that we won’t be making splashes like last offseason the niners probably aren’t going to land more than Briggs and maybe Berrian…..instead of doing the smart thing and getting Faneca with that money. We CAN DRAFT a MLB as well as a WR (this class is REALLY deep). I just hope we have the brains to pull it all off.

to ninersgold and Samra. Talent goes by all the time in the NFL, look at Ryan Grant. He was on the New York Giants two years in a row, he never played a game for them. To say that someone isn’t good because of what another team did with him really is one of the worst arguments I’ve heard in a long time. Brett Favre didn’t get a shot in Atlanta, I think he has turned out pretty good. So Shaun Hill didn’t get a shot in Minnesota. I can tell you one thing, Volek, Redman, and Culpepper have all had shots. They haven’t done so great. Competition is a good thing. Whats wrong with having two quarterbacks that can play? It’s not like we broke the bank and brought in Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. We have Alex Smith and Shaun Hill, not exactly the best QB core in the league.
pintor98 | Feb 5, 2008 | Reply
S. Hill has that (IT) factor…… A. Smith has happy feet, even though
he might have more talent than Hill. It doesn’t translate to the football field. I coach football and baseball and I’ll always take the overachiever over the underachiever.. I do think Martz will do wonders with both though. Smith has all the tools if the game slows down for him.

I agree with pintor, I’m also a coach. The ones who aren’t necessarily the best are usually the players that perform when given the opportunity. Alex Smith really has never had to work for a starting job. I think it will be good for him to be pushed.
I really hope Jared Allen doesn’t get tagged because I think he really wants to become a niner and I’m sure the niners would love to have him. The guy has a motor that won’t quit and he is talented, our defense would give up seven points less a game with his addition. Because our corners wouldn’t have to cover as long and they would have to double one of our D-lineman for the first time in a long time, leaving a void for blitzing backers. Really QB pressure is our defenses only true weakness.
MSouza | Feb 5, 2008 | Reply
Ryan I think McNolan will definitely target offensive lineman in free agency. I’m pretty sure unless Faneca wants Clement’s like money the niners will go after him. From what I hear from his disputes with the Steelers his biggest problem was a long term deal, not necessarily the money. I hope that the niners realize o-line is priority number one, which I’m sure they do. Look at the team two seasons ago. We couldn’t throw the ball if our lives depended on it but our offense still functioned occasionally because of our running game. Our offensive line was atrocious this year, and if it doesn’t improve, I don’t care what kind of weapons we get, they’ll still be unable to move the ball. Successful Martz offenses all had an offensive line, thats one of the reasons the Lions were always so inconsistent.

Good point Pintor.I still need to see Hill play some more games just to see what he can really do.He may not have a big arm and brains like Smith does but he does seem to have that “it” factor.Bill Walsh even said that the one element that makes a great quarterback is the ability to avoid the rush and throw; Not the armstrength.Plus I think Smith watching Hill preform the way he did in those two games will make him work harder and preform better.

I’m a little puzzled at how negative people are about Hill. The only thing about him is he didn’t get much of a chance to show just how good he is, and he got hurt in that short period of time, which raises durability issues. So, I want to see Hill get more playing time to see what he does. Yes, it is possible for someone labeled as a lifetime backup to suddenly play well in games. Garcia was a good example of that. Nobody liked him except Walsh, but he came in and just won games, something he has been able to do since with Philly and Tampa. Does it mean that he is the next Manning? No, but he’s a decent opion at QB, and I, for one, was sad to see him go. An even better example is Marc Bulger himself. At one time, he too was a third string QB. Injuries to Warner and his backup pushed Bulger into being a starter and he played so well they kept him. He is starting to this day. So, it is possible to find a gem buried in your QB depth chart? Absolutely. Is Hill that gem? Guess we’ll find out next year…
doc | Feb 6, 2008 | Reply
I wouldn’t be to quick to judge Hill critically for his preseason int, lest we recall that the first time Walsh put Steve Young as the starting QB he fumbled on his first three consecutive drives and was eventually was pulled out and Joe came in and won it (and of course look how good Young became).

I don’t hate him, he is a great back up, not a starter, he should not start for the Niners, unless Alex Smith really shows that he sucks that badly. I agreeit sems like he has the “it” factor, but he still needs to show if he really does have it. I’m not sure if the Niners getting there first real win with Hill fired them up and they playedd better, or if Hill is really a good starter. It was almost like the Eli Manning thing, they lost a close game to the Pats, that they could easily have won, and they got confidence in Eli Manning from that. That first real win against the Bengals, gave the team confidence in Hill. If Alex Smith can improve under Martz, and he wins a game that the team didn’t think he could win, he will get that confidence, and the team, will be “on fire” or on a hotstreak of wins. Thats what happened with the Giants, and it could happen to us. There a few games like the Pats game next season or the Cowboys where Alex SMith could (if they win and he plays well) get that confidence and go on that win streak of being/feeling unstoppable. I can see a 9-7 record or a 10-6 wildcard appearance this year. Our schedule has the hardest NFC East division and the easiest AFC EAST division. We need to sweep the NFC West, which Mike Martz is very familiar with, so it is possible, the highest amount of wins I think this team can get is 11-5, a 180 degree turn around from 5-11. That would be real nice. With losses from Pats,Giants,Saints,Cowboys or Eagles, and maybe Seattle. I could see our 11 wins…
Seattle
St louis
St louis
Arizona
Arizona
Miami
Buffalo
New York (Jets)
That is 8 right there!
Redskins
Dallas or Philly
Detroit
I also think we could pull an upset against the Saints or even Dallas or Eagles. We could end up with a 12-4 record. Now we need to have an amazing draft good free agency signees.

FireNolan.org is a scheme, don’t pay attention to critics
Alex’s shoulder is fine, we don’t need a second opinion
Fuck droppin’ the ball, Darrell’s a steady receiver
And as for Jason Hill, he’ll be ready in three years
And getting Lelie here, we just needed a bench warmer
We sent former backups to other teams just to get ordered
After the games I attack all the guys, for not being able to capitalize
Sometimes it comes down to bad play from all the backups we find
Our nose tackle might as well be Suge Knight
I don’t want anymore stars
They show up in sports cars
It’s not what we want our team to look like
This football team’s a joke, and I’m the lead comedian
Two more sacks and I’m cutting Roderick Green again

This guy’s songs are hilarious, but he is really an ass to Nolan, but Nolan will have to prove he is a good coach this year. Here is another one…
[Chorus]
Can I get an encore, do you want more?
Nolan’s back with Scottie Mac
So for one last time we’re staying the course!
What the hell are you waiting for?
After this, you should put Frank Gore
On suicide watch, people make some noise
[Nolan]
Who you know dumber than Nolan, riddle me that
One more year is a criminal act
I can’t believe they’re bringing me back
Yeah they’re bringing me back cuz I whipped the knee pads out in time
I, run a 3-4, but can’t get no rush
You never know what football team will show up
I’m in, total shock
No I’m not
We have these meetings every year, I wasn’t told my job
Was in question, hold my cock, Scottie Mac is here
He’s got me back this year
Meant literally, and sexually
He stimulates me physically and intellectually
You feel me
It smells good in the building
This morning we made love
Scot and I have a horny relation
I’m the voice and the face of
This organization
Can I get an encore, do you want more?
Nolan’s back with Scottie Mac
So for one last time we’re staying the course
What the hell are you waiting for?
After this, you should put Frank Gore
On suicide watch, people make some noise
What the hell are you waiting for?
[McCloughan]
It’s a tremendous move
For our friendship too
No dissenting views
It’s what two men do
When you first came in the draft, we tried to play you
If you don’t fit the scheme, we try to traaaaade you
After round one, everything’s a wasted pick
The only thing that matters is our relationship
I’ve learned a lot from him, he’s learned a lot from me
From the standpoint of engaging in sodomy
The parts are here
We won’t hit free agency hard this year
We ain’t gonna make a move
Face it, dude
It’s not what we aim to do
I owe him, I blow him from my knees
A cocksucker takes one for the team
And I need you to remember one thing (Nolan: One thing)
Nolan does a great job with players
He’s a game manager
Timeout saver
So from the standpoint of who we need
We want to continue to improve this team
I’m still favoring Nolan, he had a injury riddled season last year, at the QB posistion and I don’t think he has gotten a real chance to get this team to the playoffs yet. There is a chance we could make it, especially when people least expect it. The actual songs are on Youtube, the singer is terrible.
This is a positive song about Patrick Willis, if it had a better singer it would be a smash hit. It has a nice beat…

IF we get Briggs this year in FA, it will mark the second straight year that we have gotten a player previously franchised the year before. We tried to get a trade for Clements during the season, but it didn’t work out. Some reports say that we tried to get a trade in for Briggs, but it didn’t work out, so many believe we will pick him up in FA, so assuming that Haynesworth gets tagged, do you guys think we go after him via trade.
miss steve young | Feb 7, 2008 | Reply
msouza, I do not think we should pick up Briggs via free angency…lawson will be back and he is going to be a force, he’s got range…I know he has a pass rush ability…banta-cain didnt do a bad job, but he was brought into to get to the quarterback-which he did not….however, parrys harrylson is continuing to improve and I believe if we get our defense off the field and sustain some drives, statistically, we will be much better…I’ll go as far out to say a top ten unit….I think one game they were on the field for 40 minutes(maybe im exaggerating) but we need to improve offensively and I am not worried about Martz trying to air it out, he is going to use what he has(and thats a formidable running attack-maybe even moran norris will be kept around)…Bottom line is this: restructuring our offensive unit to be an efficient force should be the priority to the powers that be…with an offensive mind like martz providing advice and guidance, they should improve a ton

Let the good players go and then get some young guys again only to wait for them to get up to speed!!! THAT IS A DUMB THEORY!!! Get Briggs, but if it comes down to him or Faneca then GET FANECA!!!! It doesn’t sound like the niners are doing ANYTHING!!! In case you were wondering guys….THIS DOES HAVE ME SCARED!!! Free agency will be here before you know it. Ryan free agency doesn’t start for about a month. No team is doing anything right now. Have you been watching the little ticker go by on the NFLN, nobody is really resigning anybody yet, nobody has even declared for free agency yet. Your frustrated because your not getting any news, but have you gotten any news about Randy Moss getting resigned yet? no. I think Randy Moss is more important to the Pats then Soap is to us. My point is that its a slow week in the NFL, because its that in between period, but don’t flip out yet. I’m sure there are negotiations going on behind the scenes its just not making news because other than us hopeless niner fans, who would find that newsworthy? If the first week of free agency goes by and we haven’t signed or re-signed anyone, then flip out, and I’ll be right there with you.
I agree with you Miss Steve Young, Parys Haralson is playing well and TBC really wasn’t terrible, but TBC would be better served coming off in situational spots like he did with the Patriots. Its not that he got worse this year, it was that he is not an every down player. He is a pass rush specialist, when they run it at him he gets stood up and moved out of the way so easily it isn’t funny. A key to being able to run the 3-4 successfully is having numerous quality linebackers. We are very thin in that respect. When our players get fatigued they cannot leave the game because their isn’t anybody behind them. Thats why I think getting a backer, that can play with quality both inside and out, is a good idea keeps our players fresh and allows specialists to stick with what they are good at.
ninersgold | Feb 7, 2008 | Reply
In free agency we should get…
Alan Faneca OG ( run blocker AND pass protector) (96 madden rating)
Jordan Gross OT (veteran pass protector and got a 92 madden rating)
Bernard Berrian WR (is a Martz WR, has a 84 madden rating 97 speed)
possibly…
Lance Briggs ILB 96 madden rating as ROLB probally 90 rating as ILB
unlikely …
Terrel Suggs OLB 91 madden rating as DE/LOLB/ROLB
I just added the madden ratings for fun LOL, but they are actually vey accurate, I would love to get those o-linemen in Madden, and in real life!

Faneca and briggs will be bad fits for our team…Faneca is a run blocker like Larry Allen…for martz system to work we need pass blocking guards…also we already have moore and ulbrich no need for briggs who would demand a load of money plus he might not be big or physical enough to play middle linebacker in the 3-4….FA’s we should persue are Bernard Barrian and DEvery Henderson if he comes cheap…henderson could play the shaun McDonald role on our team…also for the o-line i would like to see us sign Montare holland at G whos athletic enough to play in denvers zone blocking scheme and also Max Starks at RT…On Defense i would like to see to DEs signed Randy Starks and Darrion Scott…they would both give us a great pass rush from the line…and LB wise i would like us to sign chris clemons who was a DE converted from LB and had 8 sacks for oakland last year
ninersgold | Feb 7, 2008 | Reply
I looked up Gross and he is a 5 year veteran, so he is very well in his prime! We better get him! Faneca is just like Larry Allen, except he is amazing at both run blocking and pass protection (as mentioned before). Faneca has 10 years of experience, he would be an instant upgrade for the LG posistion, but only for about 3 to 4 years. Gross could play LT and Staley won’t have to move. Baas and Snyder should compete for the RG posistion. Smith/Hill will have a nice amount of time to throw the ball if we get those guys.
We have 32 million cap room, even after resigning the practice squad guys and those other ex ravens. We have a ridiculous amount of money. We could go big in free agency, but we should only get the three I listed, they are the ones I think have a great chance of improving this team, and being effective immediately. I like McNolans view point on building this team throught the draft, but we have a lot of needs right now. I think a team should always get o-linemen in free agency, or a high first round pick, that is when they are ususaly very talented and good. We could easily turn out o-line around, look at the Browns, they were the worst, and now they have one of the top 15 o-lines at least
Dominique Rogers Cromartie CB (I don’t think Nolan would pass him up if he is available that is)
James Hardy
Tavares Gooden or Athyba Rubin (6′3″ 324 pounds) perfect NT
Will Franklin WR or Matt Forte RB
Jacob Hester FB
Kendall Langford DE
Dennis Dixon QB ( I completley forgot about him, he was stud b4 he was injured, he is fast and accurate, would have been a late 1st -second round pick if he hadn’t tore his ACL. He could be the steal if ALex Smith or Hill doesn’t work out.)
After an off season like that I would say a 9-7 season is very possible, even a 10 or 11 win season, especially with Martz at OC, we have Nolan a defensive genius (he has made our 32nd rank d into a on the rise to top 10 or 15) and Mike Martz offensive genius, this has to be good. Imagine the Ravens defense with a offensive genius at OC with a good offense! That is superbowl calibur team right there.

ninersgold | Feb 7, 2008 | Reply
Excuse me what I meant to say about Nolan was…
(He made our 32nd ranked defense into a top 20 and rising to top 15 to top 10 defense.)
I’m also not saying that we will make the Superbowl now, that will take at least a couple of years if everything works out like I have it. Which isn’t likely, but… if our offense is instanty turned into that top 10 category like Martz consistently has done, and our defense continues to improve, we could become a playoff team. I also think that Mike Nolan will make a lot of trades in the draft to try to get the guys he really likes. (cromartie, Forte, Hester…) Our team could get stacked with talent.
The keys are…
NT Athyba Rubin
OT Jordan Gross
OG Alan Faneca
WR picked in draft, we need a WR that can catch Hardy is 6′7″ and has the best hands of all of the WRs in the draft according to quite a few draft websites I have seen. He is Plaxico Burress 2.0
Over 20 percent of the balls thrown last season (2007-2008) were dropped, ARnaz Battle was the best WR catching a wopping ….
43% of balls thrown to him. He was terrible, and yet he was our best WR, I can’t imagine Jackson’s catching percentage!… Here ia an atricle from earlier in the season talking about the teams with the worst catching problems, that have WRs with catchaphobia or the fear of catching the ball (I made that up) , you should probaly take a look at who is number 1 on the list.

Gross is the best OT in free agency in my opinion, Max Starks would be my second choice. I doubt the Steelers will be able to keep Faneca he wants out of there, because they can’t afford him, but they will still try. As for getting Max Starks/Faneca…

When you look at a Mike Martz offense there is one huge concern I have, and that is the time Martz’s QB needs to let his WR’s route develop. That equals a good O line. Faneca is priority number one!

I don’t understand why everybody keeps saying trade Jackson and Jason Hill. We won’t get anything for either of them. They aren’t even worth sixth round picks, a team would be really desperate to even give seventh for them. So what you are essentially saying is that you want to cut two players who are under contract and pay them for sitting at home doing nothing.

Jason Hill won’t be cut. D Jax is a real piece of shit though, I would rather him be cut then take up a roster spot somewhere that we are really hurting.

axegrinder is correct…not only do we need a pass rusher but if it’s true we migh lose sopuaga then we definately also need some 3-4 defensive linemen to keep linemen off of our backers…priority(along with upgrading our offensive line) is to resign both douglas and sopuaga…and find a stud who could push franklin out of the nose tackle spot…I really do believe in my football mind that manny lawson will really start to shine next year(he was injured at the right time to allow a lengthy recovery period) and I believe he will be used in alot of situations not only as a rangy outside backer but to get to the quarterback

Andre Woodson sucked in the Senior Bowl, i’m sure he can be a good QB some where else, but we all saw that Woodson is not meant to be a Martz QB, he has a slow azz release. Alex Smith has a quicker release, he just holds on to the ball too long, which with our o-linemen is about 2 seconds, I think our line will be improved from experience, and Alex SMith will learn how to find WRs faster and how to throw the ball more accurately with Martz. Also Shaun Hill has a quick release, faster than Smith’s, but his arm stregth is about Chad Pennington’s arm srtentgh. Marc Bulger has a above avaerage arm strength even , Hill is below average. Smith with Martz has the possibility of just being a normal QB that can throw the ball accurately ANY DISTANCE. WE need to revamp our entire WR core, we literally have the worst WRs in the NFL. Even Arnaz Battle our best WR is below below average. Get Berrian, James Hardy or somebody from the god damn draft, and even Antonio Bryant up here so we can have WRs Alex SMith can throw to.
This would be a huge inprovement for our WRs core…
Bernard Berrian
James Hardy
Antonio Bryant
Jason Hill
WIll Franklin
Also we need a pass rush from (cough cough) Quentin Groves, and get a NT that can make our defense work (cough cough) Ahtyba Rubin, and get this team on the right track (cough cough) rollin with Nolan, what a terrible phrase. Our offese pretty much has it’s own head coach, our defense has it’s “genious” Mike Nolan and Greg Manusky, and our head coach/GM knows how to find talent and knows how to draft. We have all the makings for a good team, right?, unfortunately Nolan can’t keep any body he hires as OC, and he favors bad players over good ones, Martz better stay faithful to his contract or I give up on ALex Smith, becuz he will be screwed if that happens.

A. Smith will be fine, I think things like the fact he doesn’t really have a true number one WR, a new play book to learn every year, and a shitty o line have a lot to do with the fact that he might just be a late bloomer. Maybe I say that just cause I’m a fan,but who really knows though right?

“A fluid big man. Has rare size, firm hands and physical dexterity. Tracks the ball well and was particularly adept on both fades and stop routes. Releases were just adequate (doesn’t scream off the line) and will need work vs the press. Wasn’t physical as a runner and did little away from the football(won’t block). Doesn’t run through the ball on comebacks. I felt he gave up on balls and goes down too easily. Has tools but is a work in progress”
His negatives dissapoint me, but it sounds almost exactly like Plaxico Burress, and his negative weaknesses can be fixed, example is Plaxico, he used to give up on the ball if it was overthrown, than it would be picked off, but than he got his ass chewed off by his team mates, haven’t seen him do that since, his mistakes are treatable, and knowing Jerry Sullivan would definitely teach Hardy those things, Sullivan focuses on route running and than he focuses on run blocking, that is why our WRs usually are good blockers, for Gore down field.

Medford, what would happen is that they will STILL START ( DJAX and Battle) because they are veterans. If we get Berrian he would start….but since Hardy and other rookies would be rookies then they would be worked in. Jason Hill was a great receiver at Washington State, but he barely played. Maybe that is because Hostler was an idiot…..I honestly don’t know. What I do know is that we SHOULD get Hardy, but I don’t KNOW if we will get Hardy. I really hate to sound like a broken record, but because Martz is out OC we will do something stupid and take Manningham. Maybe Manningham will prove me wrong, but he is like DJAX he is great at everything except he drops a shit load of passes. I don’t think we will get Doucet unless he drops to our second pick. The injury stunt at the senior bowl screwed up his image with Nolan. We might go tackle with our first pick. Berrian would be great, but IF the niners were smart enough to forgive Antonio Bryant and bring him back as well…….we would really only have to focus on the o line. If we had Berrian, Bryant, and then DJAX in the slot life would be really good. When you combine that with Gore and Davis life is really good……again, as long as we have a good o line. I realize everyone on here has love for SHaun Hill getting us some wins, but I seriously don’t see Martz starting him over Alex Smith. The Alex Smith project is an ego thing for Martz…..he will try to prove to everyone that he finally tapped the talent he has. Alex Smith IS talented, but he is becoming a poor decision maker. A lot of negatives on hardy, but again they are fixable problems, they say he runs slower with wasting motion, fixable, needs more muscle, just needs to go to the weight room. It says he only caught 79 passes out of the 144 balls thrown to him,
many of those passes were knocked away, and I have said before, Indiana’s QB is not good. He also has given up on some passes before (ones that look overthrown and ETC…), that is an attitude that can be fixed (Plaxico Burress) They compare him to Harold Carmichael of the Eagles from 71′-84′.
