Gameday Preview: Week 2 - 49ers vs Rams

Submitted by Niner Pundit on Friday, 14 September 200734 Comments

 vsrams

The 49ers (1-0) travel to St. Louis this weekend to take on the hated Rams (0-1). This is a big game for both teams since the NFC West is supposed to be a very tight race for the division and an early lose in the division is not what these teams want. Here is what to look for when both teams have the ball.

When 49ers have the ball:
The 49ers offense struggled against the Cardinals on Monday Night so look for them to get their offense back on track. For this to happen the 49ers must establish the run, Frank Gore who had a so-so performance on opening night must get back to form. Last season Gore rushed for 127 & 134 yards against the Rams. If Gore can do that again this will open up the passing game, and with the latest injury to Rams DB Tye Hill, look for Alex Smith and Co. to expose Hill’s replacement Lenny Walls. The 49ers played well against the Rams both times last season and with much better weapons on offense they should destroy the Rams defense.

When the Rams have the ball:
The Rams key to victory revolves around Steven Jackson who has established himself as one of the premier running backs in the league. The 49ers defense did well enough to contain Edgerrin James last weekend, but James is no Jackson. The Rams still have Bulger and they still have ’I'll Never Go Over the Middle’ Holt. The 49ers must establish a pass rush and put pressure on Bulger, if they do this they should keep the game in check. Last weekend the 49ers revamped secondary shutdown Boldin and Fitzgerald, and this weekend they should do the same to Holt and whoever else they lineup. One note is starting left tackle Orlando Pace is out for the year.

Key Matchup:
Patrick Willis versus Steven Jackson. Willis was all over the field against the Cardinals and look for him to be keeping a close eye on Jackson and do what he can to keep the back under wraps.

Key Injuries:
49ers - None
Rams - Orlando Pace (out), Richie Incognito (out), Tye Hill (out)

Expert Picks

  • Ditka - 49ers
  • Keyshawn - 49ers
  • Theismann - 49ers
  • Schlereth - 49ers
  • Salisbury - Rams
  • Hoge - Rams
  • Jaws - Rams
  • Allen - Rams
  • Mort - Rams
  • Golic - Rams
  • Emmitt - Rams
  • Jackson - Rams

Prediction:
The 49ers should have beat the Rams both times last season, but there was this 4th and 1 play that Nolan opted not to go for and we all know how that ended. The 49ers are a much better team than last season on both sides of the ball and this year should be no different than last. Gore will get the offense going and with the loses of Pace and Hill will hurt the Rams on both sides of the ball and if Smith and Co. can’t take advantage of Lenny Walls then they don’t deserve to win.

49ers - 27 — Rams - 17

  • Douche Bag says:

    Niners 30, Lambs 27

  • Danny says:

I watched the Panthers and Rams game last weekend. If Gore cannot get a least yards against the Rams, than the 49ers Offense sucks! Panthers were pushing the Rams D-line almost all game!

  • Danny says:

    at least 100 yards..

  • shane says:

49ers 27 - Rams 17…the niners gotta step up this week with the offense.. if the defense plays the same i wont be worried at all,, its all abotu the offense stepping it up, and the defense staying consistant

  • shane says:

P.S… frank gores mom passed away,,, remember when brett farves dad passed away. i think he has 5 TD’s with about 350 passing yards

  • jerry says:

I’m hoping Vernon Davis breaks the 10 yard mark in this game.lol!!!I just read on THE NFL NET that C.B. Hill will be out 2 to 4 weeks with an injury!Plus Pace is on I.R.The passing game better take off this week!! 49ERS -38 RAMS-31 is my perdiction.

  • King Maffis says:

No way rams score 31 against our defense. 38-21 Niners dominate

  • Lowrance says:

I’m still not confident, but hopeful!
Our defense look like they are better prepared to handle the receivers on the Rams. If Frank can push the yardage, this will open the passing game.
Offensive Line???? It’s ALL up to you….protect and open holes!!!! We NEED this for our confidense!!!!!

  • jerry says:

Hey king maffis, since we played at 8pm on monday we dont have alot of time to prepare and our defense Might wind down toward the end of that game. But hopefully you are right with 21 points.I think we should put both running backs(Gore and Robinson) in the back field at the same time to confuse defences since Robinson is a decent blocker.

  • razoreater says:

no way rams score more than 21

  • Self Scientific says:

14-21 Niner’s. Our D won’t alow to many points, but our O can’t really put up to many points either.

  • Ryan the 1st says:

We NEED to expoit their weakness which is their secondary. They are probably going to bring the nickely a lot to overcompensate for the lose of both of their projected starters from the beginning of the season….as well as Pace. However, the niners would be REALLY STUPID to think that because of these injuries that they are going to win without a fight. I say 28-17 niners.

  • razoreater says:

didn’t the panthers put up 164yd on the lambs-i’d say their only strength is jackson-bulger should be on his back alot and it would’nt shock me if we knocked him out-our corners nullify their receivers

  • matt says:

i think turnovers are going to be the story of this game. The niners defense is going to be attacking Stephen Jackson’s hands and constantly chasing Marc Bulger. The rams quarterback is no stranger to seeing B.Y. in his face all day long. Meanwhile the 49ers secondary is going to be playing their wideouts physical and they’ll be swatting down balls
and hopefully grab a couple of INT’s while their at it. Gore is going to play with an attitude and he always runs all over the rams sorry ass defense. I think this game has blowout potential.
    49ers 28, Rams 10
WHERE’S THAT SHITHEEL RAMS FAN AT NOW BIIITCH!!!!!

  • asap says:

Our offensive cordinator needs to open up the offfense and get the ball down field instead of being consrvative. We have the weapons to do it. A solid passing game will open up the running game especially if they are putting eight in the box.

  • Zack says:

I think this will be a shootout. And we are on the road and are road record isnt that good. Our defence needs to put presure on Mark. And if that doesnt happen it will be a long day for us.i think Gore scores one td and alex smith throws 2 td’s and Nedney will get 3 fieldgoals i think the score will be 49ers30 rams 24!!!

  • A True Niner Fan says:

Gore will be playing for his mom and the Rams lost too many starters…..Its already over for them……..this is our time now and its gunna show on Sunday…..I predict D-KJax and Gore to have a huge game…..Niners 31 Lambs 10

  • Medford says:

We need to go after that new corner all game this will be the key to are victory i agree with true niner d jackson and gore will have and should have big days the rams defense isnt good we just need to keep bajema in the game to help staly block little he is pretty tough over there

  • KR3W says:

WE must get pressure on Marc Bulger.he’s not a good quarterback when he is pressured.he just throws the ball away or throws a pick.with Nate Clements and Walt Harris I’ll be damned if we dont get a INT.

  • KR3W says:

yeah where’s that douche Rams fan?I think he saw the monday nightgame and shit his pants.

  • Zack says:

The Rams lost so he went back to being a Seahawks fan since they won and the Rams didnt.

  • Zack says:

Does any one know if the kicker for Pittsburg collage lee?just wondering if anyone knows if that is andy lee’s brother?

  • rams for life says:

what up bitches….you guys missed me….

  • rams for life says:

so—we have injuries and all that — now, if you faggot ass niners lose, then guess what—forget about winning the division. and just for the record–our recievers are faster and more experience than the cardinal’s. so we’ll see all the shit you poppin about your secondary. our defense might give up points but after watching that sorry offense — our defense may look good against you offense.

    louuuuuusers!!

  • Danny says:

rams for life, promise the niner fans and me that WHATEVER the outcome you will come back on this site and be ass-monkey self. What do you say?

  • rams for life says:

promise me that when u take an L u can sniff your fellow niners nutz

  • Self Scientific says:

Hey Rams, you have not been on this site saying anything for a minute. How come all the sudden someone says something about you and your back? The only way possible is the fact that you peep this site out all the time. Why is that? fair question right?

  • Ryan the 1st says:

A fair question indeed. Why is that? Is it because you are just a sorry lambs fan???

  • rams for life says:

hey peep these nutz in your mouth…

  • rams for life says:

ryan the last…im so sorry about what is going to happen to your niners. when we win, i want to see the excuses you make…wait—you cant make excuses…we are more battered than you. so, when we do beat you guys “with both our backup corners OUT”, start picking up the shatter pieces…

  • rams for life says:

OK OK, this will be my last post. You will see me no more. It was kinda fun arguing with u pathetic losers. At your request—-im out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Self Scientific says:

    Never answered the question jackass!

  • A True Niner Fan says:

What a Loser this Lambs Fan is…..I cant wait til’ the Game so he Eats his Freakin Words an crys his season away as his Lambs are made into Chops………Go Niners!!!!!!

  • Danny says:

Shit! Does anyone know how to watch the game on the internet? Please help!
