What We Learned: Rams @ 49ers
Sun, 16/11/08 – 16:31 | 34 Comments

The 49ers won their third game of the season and first victory for interim head coach Mike Singletary. From the first half it was all 49ers. They ran the ball well, passed the ball well and didn’t have any stupid penalties or turnovers that hurt them.

Free Agent Reports

8:00 am -49ers and Justin Smith agree on a deal. 6-years $45 million.

6:05 pm -Justin Smith is still in San Francisco. According to Maiocco Smith took a helicopter ride and is set to have dinner tonight with Mike Nolan. No word yet on what entrees they had, but I’m sure it was a nice romantic evening with just the two of them, since he can’t share those candlelit nights with Derek Smith anymore. Reports are that Kwame Harris supplied the background music.

5:03 pm -Adam Schefter is reporting that the 49ers and Isaac Bruce have agreed to a 2-year deal. Maiocco reports the sides are working on a contract but haven’t come to an agreement yet.

4:05 pm -Conflicting reports on Faneca and the Jets. Latest is from Faneca’s agent no deal with the Jets. So there is still hope, little, but still hope.

3:15 pm -Justin Smith has left the building.

2:42 pm -Remove Alan Faneca from the list. ESPN is reporting he has agreed in principle to sign with the Jets, four-year, $32 million deal that includes roughly $23 million in guarantees.,

1:52 pm -Justin Smith is in the building. It’s been confirmed

1:11 pm - FOXSports.com has learned that Bruce is heading to San Francisco for a free-agent meeting with the 49ers, which recently hired Mike Martz as their offensive coordinator. St Louis Post Dispatch reports that Martz contaced Bruce Thursday night and if/when Bruce gets on a plane it will be to sign a deal not just to visit.

1:05 pm - Alan Faneca will not be making any visits to anywhere. Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports is reporting Faneca will assess offers from the Jets, Niners, and Rams, and then sign with one of them on Sunday. He’s expected to receive a deal worth $8 million per year, at a length of four or five years.

12:15 pm - The 49ers have started serious talks with recently released Rams receiver Isaac Bruce. Mike Martz, understandably, really wants him.

- Justin Smith has not arrived at 49ers complex yet. Word is that the 49ers do not want him leaving without a contract. Apparently they are set to go $8 million annually.

i dont know why the niners want justin smith instead of calvin pace im sure the money they are both demanding arent a huge difference and we have absoloutely NO PASS RUSH!!! and pace is a better fit for us in that category then smith not to mention younger

  • Rob said:

I don’t know about this. Signing Nate Clements to big money last year was worth it. Justin Smith doesn’t seem like such a sure thing to me…

  • Michael said:

A Minnesota radio station is reporting the Vikings signed Justin Smith. But this could just be an attempt to get the 49ers to not offer as much seeing as the Vikings are the second scheduled visit for Smith(the first being the 49ers).

  • Benjamin said:

I wanna know why we aren’t going after Jacob Bell from the titans, Max Starks from the steelers, Randy Starks from the titans, or WR like Johnson from arizona??

  • Texas9ner said:

Justin Smith isn’t going to get 15 sacks a year but he never gets hurt and plays the same in the 4th quarter as the 1st. He never gets tired. He is a beast against the run and this move would help P. Willie a hole lot. I would take him over any other free agent this year on defense

  • Niner Pundit (author) said:

Michael…yeah Smith is visiting with 49ers first. They don’t want him to leave. Unless this is like Adalius Thomas all over again. Reports were he was in town, then signs with Pats….

  • P said:

It’s a tough choice between Calvin Pace and Justin Smith. I believe they could get Pace a little cheaper though. And I’m not sure if they are planning on moving Smith to OLB, but it’s funny because him and Pace are about the exact same size. The great thing about Smith is he’s consitent and hasn’t missed a game since his rookie year. Last year he only had 2 sacks, but the Bengals D didn’t exactly have to much support. Pace had his first good year last year, so who knows, I’d like either one, even though Smith seems a lil pricey.

  • Cory said:

because Pace only played well for one season….and that was his contract year…

  • Frankthetank said:

i just saw on espn that faneca signed with the jets and its a done deal

  • 49ersfan77 said:

go niners were are the wr lets get are hands on like two or three get rid of 84 18 81 and bring in a new three

  • Niner Pundit (author) said:

FranktheTank….Faneca to the Jets is not a done deal. No one is reporting that anywhere. Don’t look for any word from Faneca camp until Sunday.

  • Frankthetank said:

niner pundit watch espn and john clayton just said it

    Frank….my bad found it.

The New York Jets and guard Alan Faneca have agreed in principle to a four-year, $32 million deal that includes roughly $23 million in guarantees, ESPN.com’s Michael Smith reports. Faneca is expected to travel to New York this weekend when the deal will be finalized. The Jets are planning on playing Faneca at left guard.

  • West. said:

Matt Barrows and Matt Maiocco both report that free agent defensive end Justin Smith is at the 49ers facility in Santa Clara and is currently meeting with Scot McCloughan.

  • Douche Bag said:

    Maiocco:

3:14 p.m.: Isaac Bruce is not here. (Never was here today.) And Justin Smith has left the building (without being detected.

3:15 p.m.: I can only presume at this point that Smith has left without a contract agreement and his free-agency tour continues. As for Bruce, I believe there is still a strong possibility that he ends up in a 49ers uniform this season.

  • john said:

wow, what if we end up without faneca and smith

rotoworld espn report that faneca has signed with the jets is false

  • Medford said:

york was in the building maybe he didnt want to spend $ this free agency. cheap cock sucker

  • NINAZ said:

Are you serious Martz? im starting to think we shoulda gone with Cam Cam instead, any offensive coordinator that is given a role to build a young team and wants to sing Isaac Bruce because he useto play with him doesnt deserve to coach. I will literally shoot myself if i see Bruce and DJax as starters next year. Peace of shit!!!Bruce wouldnt even beat vernon Davis in a 40!

  • 49erglory said:

ESPN is reporting that Javon Walker was released by the Broncos. I think we should consider bringing him in as our #1 receiver. I know he is a little tempestuous but he actually has talent and is a legitimate #1 receiver (something we are currently lacking.)

  • ninersgold said:

NINAZ of course not Davis is a beast, he ran a 4.38 40 at the combine, Bruce probaly runs a 4.4 now. Bruce is actually not that bad, he has hands unlike Jackson and he knows Martz and the passing offense. But but we are still going to draft a WR in the first/second rouns of the draft, we have too, Mclougha basically said it himself, we aren’t going to sign a big FA WR cuz he wants to much money (Berrian)the draft has a lot of first round talent to pick from, that’s what he said in an article basically.

Bruce is Jackson but with hands! (and older)

  • AnonymousNiner said:

Issac Bruce just signed a 2 year contract with the 49ers - Adam Schefter (NFL Total Access)

  • ninersgold said:

Damn you guys are fast! I just saw that and was about to say that. ISSAC BRUCE IS A NINER FOR 2 years it was on NFL Network

  • Texas9ner said:

Ninaz, you can’t just look at what Isaac Bruce does on the field. This guy is a coach on the field. He can help everyone on offense with the play calling and how the offense is ran. Yes he is old and not a longterm fix but this does help. Just quit thinking so neggative all the time.

  • webehighrollin said:

NINAZ ur a freakin moron….ur post was probably the stupidest thing i’ve read in a long long time…

  • Samra said:

Damn i hope Rice doesnt let bruce wear #80

  • Ninaz said:

Congratz guys we got yet another steal in Isaac Bruce! (coughs in sarcasm) Its a good deal if he provides his services as a WR core mentor for the 49ers but if he sees #1 or #2 playing time then look forward to another disapointing offense. What i saw in the future was a trade for Roy Williams, what we need is a young tuff, fearless athlete with good hands not another old hag that will give zero improvement in Alex Smiths progression.

  • niner_junkie said:

Ninaz, you are officially retarded. After seeing your last two posts, I can tell that you know nothing about the game. First of all, speed doesn’t matter. Jerry Rice ran somerhwre around a 4.6 second 40, which is pretty slow for the skill positions in the NFL. But he didn’t turn out to be too bad, did he?
Secondly, there’s a reason Bruce is so high up there on the all time receiving list: he can catch. He’s slowing down a little, but it doesn’t mean he can’t play.

Sorry for the rant, but i couldn’t help myself on that one.

  • ninersgold said:

Marvin harrison is also old, and he is really fast still, so maybe Bruce isn’t that slow.

  • niner_junkie said:

Harrison’s a burner. He’s faster than Bruce. But Bruce still has the experience and the toughness. He isn’t one of those stone hands receivers that we keep getting.

  • JNova80 said:

If the price is right, this is good news. He’s got experience and still has a lot of talent. Doesn’t mean we stop looking for WR’s though.

  • Ninaz said:

niner_junkie, its called game speed and Jerry had it. Look at Reggie Bush a guy who was known in college for Blazin speed got a 4.36, 40 dont mean Jack and dont say i dont know jack because i know more than you, you punk peace of crap. Isaac’s been around since the Rams were in Los Angeles, hes old and tired, it all depends on how much they paid the guy. I’d love to see him as a mentor but his days as starting are done, bernard wants too much money and Roy is not a “Nolan guy” so hes the next best thing i guess. Mock my words that we will have one of the worst receiving cores in the Nfl if its Djax, Bruce, Battle, Hill, Lelie.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

I had to work all day and just got off. I have gotten text messages. What is going on with Justin Smith? We have Bruce, that is a good move because then he can train everyone…..I know he isn’t Berrian, but he is more reliable than DJAX OR LELIE OR BATTLE. What about Justin Smith? Please guys, let me know the latest because I KNOW NOTHING RIGHT NOW!!!

  • AnonymousNiner said:

The New York Jets and guard Alan Faneca have tentatively agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal that includes roughly $23 million in guarantees, ESPN’s Michael Smith reports. Faneca is expected to travel to New York this weekend, when the deal will be finalized. The Jets plan to play Faneca at left guard.

  • dseiler49 said:

Bruce will be a good mentor for our younger players. We lost a strong veteran leader when BY retired, Bruce can certainly fill that hole. Also Bruce destroyed Clements and Harris last year in both games against the Rams, he may be old but much like Jerry did when he left SF I think he still has something in the tank.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

So……when we rank third in salary cap space…..we just LET JUSTIN SMITH HIT THE ROAD TO MINNESOTA??? ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Nolan, you really don’t get it do you? If you don’t make us a wild card team then you are TOAST!!!! The SF 49ers are looking A LOT like the SF GIANTS…..Sign one good defensive player and then sign ONE good offensive player and then hope for high ticket sales. YOu have got to be kidding me!!!! You let Justin Smith GO? I hope I am wrong, but I call it a 30% chance we ever see him in a niner uniform. What did we do? NOTHING!!!! I hope they are satisfied because I doubt that there are many niner fans that are happy with them being so IMPOTENT during the free agency period.

  • Jomar Gomez said:

Dont cry over Justin Smith. He only had 2 sacks last year!

  • Golden Elbows said:

I agree with the signing of Bruce. I see Bruce moving the chains on 3rd downs with quick slants or 5 and out. I also believe that with Martz as a OC he will elavate all of our WR. Just look how he turned around the rams and Detroit’s WR/offense. Lets not forget that we have VD with speed—I would like to see how Martz uses him. Bruce will have the experience and as Alex or Hill gets mentored by Martz the timing of passes will be there, which make it easy for WR to catch. Lets not forget GORE will be the main focus of the Offense.

However, i also think we need a #1. Walker would be nice.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

I understand that, but IF we don’t sign him then WHAT DID THE NINERS REALLY DO DURING FREE AGENCY??? I wouldn’t be proud of signing all of these back ups for 1-2 years. THAT ISN’T SOMETHING TO BRAG ABOUT. You’d like to think that a coach that is on the hot seat would want to get some PLAYERS in here instead of getting a bunch of nobodies to sign…..Bruce is our biggest signing. Don’t get me wrong, Bruce will help us A LOT, but if you rank third in the whole NFL then Isaac Bruce shouldn’t be your biggest signing. Grade I give the niners so far for this free agent period……C-.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

That isn’t OK for a team that ranks THIRD IN THE NFL in cap space!!!!

  • Ryan the 1st said:

This sounds like Banta Cain last year…..he was RIGHT ABOUT TO LEAVE….but he didn’t. I hope the niners pull this one out. If we JUST get Smith we still will have a fair amount of cap room. There should be enough to still get some players next year. Can everyone use their power to tell me the whole thing about Walker? I just don’t because he whines a lot and is injury prone. However, HE IS A DEEP THREAT and would upgrade our WR core.

  • dajanksta said:

to michael- that makes no sense if anything that “ploy” would make the niners raise their offer. either way justin smith is still in cali
he had a helicopter ride with nolan and has dinner plans tonight with him

    link
    http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/default.asp?item=1036206
    From Miocco’s blog:
Justin Smith is still in the Bay Area. He took a helicopter tour of the South Bay this afternoon with Mike Nolan. He will have dinner tonight with Nolan and, perhaps, a few coaches. I just spoke with Smith’s agent, Jim Steiner, who confirmed the helicopter ride and dinner tonight. He said he was not sure who would be joining Smith and Nolan for dinner. Steiner said Smith is still “scheduled” to go to Minnesota tomorrow. But it’s pretty clear the 49ers are going to pull out all the stops to sign Smith before he has a chance to leave the Bay Area.

  • ninersgold said:

Hey everybody we already did more in FA than expected, we build the team throught the draft, not FA, I know FA is more exciting, cuz you know the star players that are good, but they waste a ton of room, berrian wanted to be paid half of randy Moss’s deal, which is still huge. He wanted to be paidlike Larry Fitzgerald is going to be. number 1. We are going to draft a WR it is fricken obvious! We are showing interest in James Hardy (not just me the Niners) and if we don’t get him there are plenty others. Bruce is like Darrel Jackson he can run routes and getopen, difference is Bruce will catch the ball 99.9% chance he will, while Jackson has a 55% chance he will cacth the ball…
    http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d8054ca12

He can still play. That is from just last season.

  • AXEGRINDER said:

Justin Smith ain’t goin’ nowhere. He wouldn’t have taken a helicopter ride and have dinner and all that shit if he wasn’t serious. I’m sure they casually talked numbers when he first got here. I bet he’s a Niner by tonite or tomorrow. And he only had 2 sacks last year mainly becuz the Bengals have the shittiest corners in all of football.

  • Georgio said:

this is to Ryan the 1st….how exactly are the niners doing a bad job at signing? Justin Smith is a very good D-end, Isaac Bruce has enough in the tank to beat out stupid D. Jackson, DeShaun Foster will be one a very good person to have running the ball when Gore needs a breather….so please explain to me how the niners are doin a bad job!!!

  • JNova80 said:

Bruce still has some skills, and that video shows an example of them. Good hands and gets the two feet in. I’m excited about him being on our side for a change. And I’m not so sure about Walker, two years ago, maybe.

  • pintor98 said:

Im glad the niners are not throwing away money like some of these other teams. K. Bell from KC and Pit before that,I think would be good for ILb he’s 28.

There’s still a lot of players that are going to get cut or traded.
We should make a move for J. Walker. Briggs is worth 8 million a year, compared to a D Line that only had 2 sacks and 7 the year before. I would rather wait till next year to break the bank on J Allen.

  • MSouza said:

Bruce was the one that toasted us a year ago, not Holt, the old man has enough to make some good outings.

  • Texas9ner said:

Who says they won’t go after J. Allen next year even if they sign Justin Smith. Lets face it this Coaching staff is defensive minded and I love every minute of it. Lets make this defense unstopable. The Ravens did it why can’t the 49ers?

  • JNova80 said:

Not sure if it was posted or not. But according to KFFL.com, the Bruce deal is 2yr/$6 mil.

  • Texas9ner said:

The name CANDLESTICK PARK is coming back! No more Monster park. Thats good news. This name will stay until they move to a new field hopefully in 2012. Now lets bring back the old unies.

    This Just in…..from ESPN.com:

The San Franciso 49ers and defensive end Justin Smith agreed to a six-year, $45 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees.

Smith, who had played all of his seven previous seasons in the NFL in Cincinnati, was given the franchise tag by the Bengals in 2007.

Smith was the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Missouri. He has 43 ½ career sacks but managed only two last season. Smith has played in 16 games every season except his rookie campaign when he made 15 appearances.

  • Lowrance said:

It amazes me, that most 9er fans are oblivious, to good football understanding and practice. First, Alex Smith, I’ve been to camps under all of the last three OC’s. A.S has all the tools, but the constant that has raised its head everytime is “Release Timing”. Smith, has an inbred tendency to hold on to the ball to long. Trust me, our old boo cow Martz, is a timing first and all O.C.. Shaun Hill comes in and throws timing routes, and everyone starts calling for Smith’s head, mark my words, when Martz and this kid get on the same page, it will be all good. Issac Bruce, ha ha!! next to Jerry Rice, Bruce is going to be the best route runner that the 9ers have had since Rice, he’s like M.Harrison, Smith is going to learn to throw where recievers are going to be, subsequently won’t take the pounding he has by holding on to the ball too long. Justin Smith, he is like a Pierce Holt, an outstanding pressure DE. He may not sack like Cedric Hardman, but he brings PRESSURE, and pressure breaks pipes. Pressure brings interceptions, sacks are overated, unless you are Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Mark Gastineau, Deacon Jones, or Gino Marchetti, or whoever your fave five is. Trust this, Smith will collapse some pockets. Nolan has made the 9ers better each year he’s been there, with a little pressure up front, watch the 08 9ers, they’ll have one of the top 6-defenses in the NFL. The 9ers should start the season like this: WR> Isaac Bruce, SR>
Arnez Battle, TE> Vernon Davis, make Walker a hybred TE/WR, use Gore or Foster like the Rams used Faulk, there has been Sid Gillman, Don Coryal, Ernie Zampese, and all the downfield copy cat O.C.s since then, like Saunders, Norv Turner, Fassel, etc. But quiet as it is kept, Martz belongs with the first group as an innovator, EVERYTHING works off timing, and learning terminologies, and a strong, 5-man offensive line. The OL to me, is what is going to make or break this offense , not Bruce, not A.Smith, but an offensive line that’s built for running the ball and not holding blocks in the passing game.

By the way I am on the Hill bandwagon too. Just check out the begin of this youtube video of Alex Smith it was his rookie debut I believe,

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84QXHUcfSQY

am I wrong or doesnt Alex show virtually no improvement since his debut? I mean just look at his decision making, holding on to the ball to long, overthrowing, getting rid of it too quick, throwing int’s and just looking plain scared. Dont get me wrong he has had A game or two where he does well but all in all to me he is the same quarterback and I dont care how young you are this is a “what have you done for me lately” league and Alex has not shown enough! I see no improvements look we have a history of great and good quarterbacks and my opinion this guy just doesnt have that IT!

Hill came in against the vikings and immediately started making plays plus his mechanics and reads are way better than Alex. Hill just looks comfortable out there like he knows what he is doing if you see some of the clips from the tampa bay and cincy game

    http://www.nfl.com/videos;jsessionid=8309EA844D2DE75626133786285C1F41?videoId=09000d5d8051f372

he immediately just starts going threw his progressions as soon as the ball is snapped. I just think Hill has “IT” the intangibles to lead us to the playoffs and Alex dont but that is just my opinion!
