Of course, some of this hinges on the status of Dashon Goldson, who I'd really like to see sign a longterm deal. But 2013 will be a contract year for Donte Whitner, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to draft a playmaker to either anchor the secondary in Goldson's place or complement Goldson.

I've been pretty busy lately with work, so throw out some intel on some ideal safety prospects in rounds 1-3.

He's had a pretty turd year at CB in 2012, but I actually really like David Amerson as a FS convert.

Special Teams says "hi" back.

Back on topic.. How about the kid from LSU? LSU seems to be a hotbed of elite secondary players.

Eric Reid? He'll be long gone

Nah, I like him, too. late 2nd.

You know I rarely go all-in for OU players. Gerald McCoy was the last one.

Likely. He really disappeared in some games this year. Some teams were really able to throw on the Tigers. It confuses me. His skill is there without question.

I think there's a chance that Reid or Vaccaro will still be available late 1.

I thought we were talking 2nd round. They will both be there in the first round, I'd guess. Safeties always drop.

Outside of the rare top-10 guys that absolutely jump off the screen like an Eric Berry or Sean Taylor, safeties are always a little hard to judge as a fan without access to coaching tape cut-ups with the ability to easily re-wind and slow down plays. I always like to hear what Mike Mayock has to say about the safety class since he is a former safety with access to all of that.

I will say that on first glance through the college season I thought a lot of the bigger-name guys getting hype going into the season were underwhelming. I would single out Vaccaro in particular as a guy whose play I don't think even came in the same neighborhood as the hype.

I thought Tony Jefferson looked pretty good as a steady presence and a complete safety, but didn't wow me enough in either the run or pass game to feel completely confident in him at this point. A guy that intrigued me in terms of size/athleticism/skill combo was T.J. McDonald from USC. He looked like a LB playing safety, and even lined up like a LB at times, but at least on TV he looked like he moved surprisingly well for his size. Decent guy to bring on safety blitzes too. He reminds me more of Kam Chancellor in terms of his movement skills for a big guy than a straight-line stiff like Taylor Mays, but we will see. As more footage, analysis, and an opportunity to see how well the guys move in combine drills and such come to light, I will hopefully be able to narrow down things and have a chance to double-check my first impressions.
