Faulk: “All Built Around Gore”
Today the NFL Network and Marshall Faulk were on hand at the 49ers practice and it seemed that everyone was gravitating to Faulk. During his time at the practice Faulk stressed that Gore’s role will be more important due to the inexperience of the 49ers’ QB’s. He compared it to his early days in St. Louis.
“It was all on me,” Faulk said. “Frank is going to be the guy, the core. It’s all going to be built around him.”

Mike | Jun 10, 2008 | Reply
Faulk don’t even compare yourself with Gore’s role and ability. Gore is a 49er and you just wish you could have been on.
straighthate | Jun 10, 2008 | Reply
That was a stupid comment.
Faulk is one of the classiest guys around the game, and hearing this makes me pretty eager to see what Martz has planned for Gore. I’d love to see him top the total yards category for the NFL this year.
Dan the man | Jun 10, 2008 | Reply
I agree, that was a terrible comment… I hope Gore can be half of what Faulk was, and I believe that Gore can have a Faulk type of season if he gets a little help from the other 10

Ryan the 1st | Jun 10, 2008 | Reply
Yeah man, you kind of blew it with that comment. Faulk is a class A guy and an former NFL MVP. I am not saying that Gore can’t be a stud and won’t blow up next year because I do think that he will blow up, but I REALLY hope that Gore can be a Faulk type of running back. All Frank needs is to be patient when hitting the hole IF he is going to do this. I love that Gore hits to hole hard, but sometimes that isn’t the best strategy. Battle dropped the ball with this last stunt….unless it was a FAMILY emergency then he dropped the ball and deserves getting bumped to third or fourth receiver. I personally think Lelie is the better receiver. I know Battle has been Mr. Reliable, but he has only been reliable for C grade stats. It isn’t like he has had a thousand yard season or something. The niners need to go O line, TED, and WR in the draft next year. However, I have this itchy feeling that TWO receivers that we have on the roster who aren’t named Bruce or Battle are going to really impress this year. Bruce and Battle will do their thing, but I really think two other receivers are going to blow up….BRYANT JOHNSON!

Frank Gore would be as good as Faulk if he was as fast. Unfortunately , Gore isn’t so he’ll never be as good as Faulk.
Billy | Jun 10, 2008 | Reply
Whoa hey now I know Faulk is great but I really think you guys are underestimating Frank Gore sure he differs from Faulk but he has Potential to be better I mean the offence revolves around Gore cause hes great especially with 8 men in the box and a sucky as throwing game he was the only thing we had going in offense and will have a break out year. So no comparissons cause they`re both different backs with different talents.

Speed has nothing to do with the running back position.Saying Gore will never be as good as Faulk because he’s not as fast is straight stupid and flat out wrong.Barry Sanders
Adam49 | Jun 11, 2008 | Reply
Oops sorry.Barry Sanders, Walter Payton,Roger Craig,Franco Harris, and even Emmitt Smith were all great running backs and none of them had great speed. No i’m not comparing Gore to them.Just the speed aspect.I’d take a running back with great vision, the ability to break tackles, and the ability to pick up a blitz over speed any day of the week and twice on sunday.Mike Martz already said that Gore can pass block better than Faulk. And he also said that Gore is a better runner in between the tackles than faulk was.The only things stopping gore from being a better running back than faulk is experiance and the biggest thing, inuries.Marshall Faulk is a Hall of Famer and because gore has had both knees and both shoulders worked on I dont think he will have the career that faulk had,but I sure think gore is as good as faulk talent wise.
Adam49 | Jun 11, 2008 | Reply
Amd mike, that was a rediculous comment.Faulk ia a HALL OF FAME running back.At the moment gore is just a good running back.

49er4life | Jun 11, 2008 | Reply
I’m not saying that a good running back has to be fast. But in today’s game, when D-linemen have 4.6 speed, speed is especially important. The two best running backs in the game today are LT and Adrian Pederson, both of whom run in the 4.4 range. What does Gore run? Try 4.7. Gore is a great runner, and he is as shifty as any runner in the league today. But Gore’s speed is what prevents him from being an elite running back. And don’t ever mention Gore in the same breadth as Barry Sanders. Slap yourself.

ill make it nice and clear for all you guys FRANK GORE IS A COMPLETE BACK PERIOD……. he has led the team in reception the last two seasons and he has rushed for consecutive thousand yard seasons and his pass blocking is very good so therefore GORE is what most teams want in a running back and we got him gentlemen!!!!!!
Samra | Jun 12, 2008 | Reply
first of all Gore is as good as Faulk, even though he doesnt have track speed, Gore is blessed with Football Speed..prime Example the fourth down TD from the 2nd week rams game…Also Adrian Petersom is a top 10 back not the #2…heres how i think the ranking of top 10 backs goes…
1. Ladanian Tomlinson (Fell a bit last yr but will come back stronger)
2. Brian Westbrook (Everything R. Bush was supp. to be, can catch& Run)
3. Steven Jackson (Fast playmaker)
4. Frank Gore (Heart and Soul of out offense…will have a breakout yr)
5. Adrian Peterson (If he can repeat and stay healthy then a #2)
6. Willie Parker (only this low due to current injury)
7. Clinton Portis (great outside runner when healthy)
8. Willis McGahee (another great product of the U)
9. Jamal Lewis (gotten his groove back will build on last yr)
10.Fred Taylor (strong hard running playmaker when healthy)

Also a little news from Rotoworld…Marcus Maxwell played on the first team with Chad Johnson sitting out team drills Thursday.Impact: Rookies Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson are taking a backseat. Antonio Chatman might be the favorite for the third job, but for now Maxwell looks more likely to start if Johnson or T.J. Houshmandzadeh got hurt.

Man I knew Maxwell was going to develop to a decent WR he was worth watching In NFL Europe
And Samra you took the words out of my mouth look at Jerry Rice he wasnt the fastest on his 4 time but he is still great due to game speed and why the heck are we putting down Frank Gore OUR BEST Offensive player some people here are like 49er4life I mean sure hes not any other back but hes our starter and I give him props for havin 1000 yds in our horrible offense
And no niner Im not Mike theres a reason Im Billy Im not pretending to be someone else

I’m not putting Gore down at all. I think he’s a great back, and we should ride him till the wheels fall off. But i’m saying, you cannot compare him to a first ballot hall of famer. It’s just not right.
Adam49 | Jun 12, 2008 | Reply
Samra, that is a good top 10.But I would definitely put Gore ahead of Jackson and I would move portis up a few spots.
Dan the man | Jun 12, 2008 | Reply
Holy cow. Did “Samra” just say Gore is just as good as Faulk. C’mon bud, Gore hasn’t done shit compared to Faulk. I think Gore is good, but Marshall is one of the few players to reach at least 10,000 rushing yards and 5,000 receiving yards in his career. He is the only player to have 100+ rushing touchdowns and 30+ receiving touchdowns, and to conclude, he was also an NFL MVP and a Super Bowl winner. As much as I like Gore, can we please stop comparing him to Marshall. I know Gore’s career isn’t over yet, but I don’t think Gore’s health will let him sniff the career Faulk had.

It’s really unfair to compare any running back to another.I mean every player is so different in so many ways.I mean you can say “he reminds me so much of” but to say the someone will be greater than another player is just not fair. Its kinda like when Steve Young took over for Joe, I mean Steve was never gonna live up to what Joe did but he become a hall of fame Quarterback. And another thing speed doesn’t always matter for a running back.Just look at Reggie Bush.Dudes fast but has he had consecutive 1,000 yard rushing seasons?
Adam49 | Jun 13, 2008 | Reply
Just because Gore probably won’t reach Faulks stats dont mean he isn’t as good as faulk.Cmon Dan.Gimme a break.Ther’s no doubt that gore is a better all around player than faulk.I mean what did faulk do better than gore and I know faulk will have a better career than gore. But that’s the luck of the draw.Gore blew out both knees so he will not be able to play as long as faulk.(I’ll repeat myself)I dont think anyone knows faulk better than Mike Martz.Martz himself said that Gore is a better runner in between the tackle than faulk,he said that gore is better at blitz pickup than marshall ever was.And he even said that gore was not far behind on recieving(although i have seen gore drop or tip alot of paases).Toughness, faulk missed a whole season with turf toe.I’ve had turf toe and it does hurt ALOT.Gore had a severly sprained ankle and played the whole season except for 1 game on it.My opinion dude but i’d take gore as my running back over faulk anyday. And faulks 1000 yard reciveing and 1000 yard rushing year came with martz as coach so i expect huge numbers outta gore this year.

More former Niner News from rotoworld:
Former practice squad regular Harvey Dahl is running with the Falcons first-team offensive line at right guard. The new coaching staff has a clean slate and wants to pair the nasty-tempered Dahl with the even nastier right tackle Tyson Clabo. Longtime starter Kynan Forney has worked behind Dahl, but the team is still in the experimental stage.
I bet the niners are wishing the could have kept him Last year…I probably wouldve cut Leron McCoy or Attiyah Allison or Kwame “the Raider” Harris in order to keep Dahl.

Wow, that was a deep comment. A 96 rating sounds fair since he is the better linebacker between him and Tatupu. If you don’t like the 96 rating then why don’t we refer to .96 which is probably close to what Tatupu’s blood alcohol content was during his DUI…..what an idiot. Enjoy your time now because as soon as Holmgren leaves you guys are SCREWED!!! I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys get unseated this year. You keep losing talent on offense and stay the same on defense. So while you will have a good defense you will have an injured Branch, Julius Jones, and a couple of overrated receivers that will have to pick up the pace for Branch who is expected to be injured into this coming season. Branch isn’t sounding like he is likely to play against the niners. BLITZ, BLITZ, BLITZ!!!!
AXEGRINDER | Jun 16, 2008 | Reply
Good post, Medford. All’s you have to do is make the playoffs the year before and you’ll get a 90+ rating the following year. Madden ratings are bullshit for the most part, just look at the sorry ass Redskin’s 88 rating. I mean, the Rams suck REAL bad and they got a 77 rating. Those people at EA Sports don’t factor in offseason acquisitions or coaching changes. I’ll still whoop on fools online with the Niners no matter what their rating is.
And as for this Seacocks asshole……your team has been a perennial loser ever since they have been in the league!! Going to the Super Bowl and LOSING doesn’t give you any kind of bragging rights. It’s alright dude, some teams are just NOT MEANT TO WIN THE BIG GAME. Your reign atop this sorry division is OVER. It’s 49er time now dickhead.

As the 49ers’ practices wind down this week, the quarterback competition is only heating up.
After the final organized team activity Thursday, the coaching staff will spend the next month or so figuring out a tentative pecking order for when training camp kicks off July 24.
All indications are that Alex Smith will get the first crack with the starting unit. He played well during the organized team activities and drew praise from Coach Mike Nolan on Tuesday for his improved ability to handle the blitz.
But, at best, Smith’s name will be written in light pencil.
Shaun Hill and J.T. O’Sullivan also have a shot at the starting job.
“The pleasing thing to me is that we have three guys who can win a game for us,” Nolan said.
No final decision on a starter needs to be made, of course, until the regular season opens Sept. 7 against the Arizona Cardinals.
But Nolan wants a plan for how much time each quarterback will spend with the first-team offense at the start of training camp. If the 49ers alternate too often, they run the risk of another season with the offense out of sync.
Linemen need to get used to a quarterback’s rhythm barking out signals; receivers need to develop chemistry on routes. Those elements take on extra importance under new offensive coordinator Mike Martz, whose schemes rely on precision and timing.
“At some point, you have to decide who is going to take more reps. You have to do that in fairness

to the other players who are out there,” Nolan said.
The coach stopped short of naming names, but Smith left a positive impression during the OTAs with his improved reads.
Martz has challenged Smith to be more aggressive against the blitz. Instead of always checking down and worrying about protection, Smith is learning that blitzes can sometimes be exploited for a big play.
He’s getting rid of the ball more quickly - to the so-called “hot read” - and throwing with more confidence.
“He’s doing things in practice I haven’t seen him do before,” Nolan said.
Smith, about to begin his fourth season, said he is starting to understand Martz’s concept of organized chaos. When he first started studying game film, and saw the ball flying all over the place, Smith thought it looked free-wheeling and improvisational.
“I thought, ‘Man, it looks like a gunslinger,’ ” he said. “But it’s actually very fundamental, very thought out. Everything is done for a reason.”
The concept of using hot reads is hardly revolutionary - except, perhaps, for recent 49ers teams. Tight end Vernon Davis said Tuesday that he couldn’t remember being the target of a hot read last year.
He’s glad Martz is resolving the problem.
“A lot of big plays come from hot routes,” Davis said. “I’m excited about our offense.”
• The 49ers were awarded defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey on a waiver claim. Ramsey, who is 6-foot-3, 300 pounds, was a sixth-round pick out of USC by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006.
He played six games as a rookie and nine last season. Ramsey played for two national title teams while with the Trojans.
• Tackle Ramiro Pruneda was assigned to the 49ers as part of the NFL’s international practice squad program. Pruneda (6-6, 317 pounds) led Monterey Tech to four Mexican national championships.
Under the program, 16 players from around the world get a chance to spend a season as an extra man on an NFL practice squad.
• Former Redskins defensive lineman Joe Salave’a, now an assistant coach at San Jose State, is working with the 49ers during the OTAs. “He’s going to be a heck of a coach,” Nolan said.

You guys wish you had Aaron Rodgers this year instead of Alex Smith.Watch Aaron will tear it up.Pack in the superbowl!!!!!!!
Ryan the 1st | Jun 19, 2008 | Reply
You’re an idiot. I still have mixed feelings about us drafting Smith over Rodgers, but I GUARANTEE that Smith will have the better season.
ninerfaithful | Jun 19, 2008 | Reply
packfan- you really think the packers have faith in rodgers?
thats why brian brohm is on the roster there is no way rodgers will even come clost to 13-3 season repeat
i do think rodgers has alot of potential but the niners were better off with taking smith

why do other fans from other teams come here i know the site is off the hook but dam we need to only allow niner fans excuse me guys i need to take a seahawk and wipe with a packers fan
Ryan the 1st | Jun 19, 2008 | Reply
Good point, I just don’t see them repeating what they did last year, plus they have a Ryan Grant holdout problem. That isn’t going to help matters because the packers ARE arrogant and stupid enough to trust Brandon Jackson as their starter…..HA HA!!! Furthermore, Brohm is a HUGE statement from the packers. If they had a lot of faith in Rodgers they wouldn’t have drafted that guy. Alex Smith WILL have the better season.

OK! I JUST READ THAT THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR THAT THE NINERS ARE INTALLING HOT ROUTES ON THE OFFENSE SINCE NOLAN HAS ARRIVED…..WHAT DA HELL?…. NOLAN SAID THAT HIM BEING A DEFFENSIVE MINDED COACH, HIS THINKING WAS TO DEFEND THE BLIZ RATHER THAN ATTACK IT….OK I GIVE HIM THAT…. BUT WHY WOULDN’T HE HAVE SOME HOT ROUTES. I DONT GET IT. THAT FORMULA OF PROTECTION WOULD PROBALY WORK BETTER IF….SAY….. KWAME HARRIS…… WASN’T ON THE TEAM,OR YOU HAD EXPERIENCED LINE MEN. THIS MEANS THAT ALEX SMITH HAS BEEN IN THE LEAGUE ALL THIS TIME AND HAS NEVER CALLED OR THROWN TO A HOT ROUTE.

I read the article too, but I don’t think they meant that it is the first time we have ever used hot routes. I think they meant that we have always checked down on blitzes rather that exploiting them. A check down is a hot route too, but we never took a chance down field, I think that is more of what they meant.

The Cardinals are the NFL’s Farm Team. Any good players will move on to a “REAL” team as soon as possible. Anquan Boldin has just taken longer to figure it out. Bryant Johnson caught on quick and I would personally like to be the first to send out a special, Thanks on behalf of all 9er fans. It is true, the NFL wouldn’t be the same without the BirdBrains strengthening the NFL’s talent.

When frank Gore leads the NFL in Rushing, has 1381 yrds.Rushing/1000 yrd receiving in a season. The NFLs Most Valuable Player award , Two time the NFLPA Player of the year award [2001-02]. Marshall Faulk only played 12 seasons for the(Colts/Rams) He is one of, if, not the greatest two-way backs eve, racking up 19,154 yrds from scimmage. He had 12,279 yrds.rushing, and 100 TDS. He had 767 catches for 6875 yrds. and another 36 TDS. He held or holds the NFL record for all-purpose yrds.[2429 yrds.] in a season. Played in two(2)Super Bowls. I’ve seen them come and go since 1954. And only Jim Brown and Barry Sanders could run without blockers, and Marshall Faulk, my most hated Ram when he played, was 1/2 tier below them. Frank Gore, is my favorite 49er runner, since, Hurrying Hugh “The King” McElhenny. When Gore hits a hole, clean, he’s gone. Too bad he’s slow. I’ll raise my hand right now though, and say, Frank Gore couldn’t carry Marshall Faulks shoulder pads. He’s not even in the same class a 49er, as Roger Craig was. Of course I don’t exspect anyone under 40, and a 49er fan to really understand this.
