What We Learned: Rams @ 49ers
Sun, 16/11/08 – 16:31 | 34 Comments

The 49ers won their third game of the season and first victory for interim head coach Mike Singletary. From the first half it was all 49ers. They ran the ball well, passed the ball well and didn’t have any stupid penalties or turnovers that hurt them.

Bryant Gone After this Season?

Submitted by Niner Pundit on Thursday, 28 December 200691 Comments

bryant.jpgUpdate 12.28.06 - From Maiocco: It sounds like that all-sports network just took a guess on this one. As unpredictable as Bryant is, there is no guarantee that he’ll be back. After all, Nolan has said that he’s on a very short leash. But I asked the coach about this on Wednesday and he reiterated he wants Bryant back. He said he’ll look back in three years and say whether it was a good decision to sign him. He said Bryant still has a lot to offer the 49ers. We shall see.

12.26.06 - This falls under the rumor category so take it for what it is worth. Cold Pizza is reporting that Bryant is likely never suiting up for the niners again, and that his lack of maturity has been pissing off both teammates and coaches all year, and that its likely done after the end of the year.

In addition ESPN Insider has this to say. Antonio Bryant has been put on a very short leash after being hit with a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Yet, the early word is he is considered a keeper that the team hopes will learn from his mistakes and go out of his way to help teammates from avoiding similar off-the-field problems in the future.

So again take the rumor for what it is worth.

he goes than we’ll have to draft Calvin Johnson, then perhaps we could sign Drew Bennet to give us a solid trio of receivers

  • Ryan said:

Don’t forget that Donte Stallworth is available after this season. I just don’t see Calvin Johson available for us by the time our pick rolls around. It is possible to get ahold of Jarret, but I just don’t think that it would be wise to do this. How many first round receivers have turned into stud playmakers…Braylong Edwards and Roy Williams are the only ones that come to mind. I think it would be wise to get a receiver or two through free agency. Receivers in the draft are too much of a crap shoot.

  • Mike said:

It is really a shame to loose a good receiver but this player will not grow up and stay away from the drugs. But, you know another team will take on the trouble just like TO. Can we trade him maybe?

  • jonnie be bad said:

stallworth is injury prone and i dont see him leaving philly.seems like we are in the same boat again like last year.trying to find a wide receiver.is bryant johnson from arizona a free agent after the year is over or d.j.hackett from seattle?

  • steve said:

how about dane looker or shawm mcdonald or kevin curtis from the rams i think we need to take some talent from ower divition.

  • Brandon said:

Out of those names mentioned, I’d most want Bryant Johnson. Look how productive he has been being the THIRD receiver as well as in an iffy QB situation. My vote goes there.

  • Ryan said:

Do we really need to pick up more than one receiver??? We shouldn’t over pay for somone who isn’t worth it. Desperation could screw us over bad. Getting Kevin Curtis or Mcdonald and paying them too much wouldn’t be wise either. We have a lot of money to spend, but that doesn’t mean we need to spend it like drunken sailors.

  • harry said:

well it looks like we are kicking T.O.s step brother to the curve. maybe jerry porter might be avalable.

  • eddie said:

just a rumor, but i could see it happening.

  • 9999ers said:

did alex smith have anything to do with it.bryant has been open a few times and smith threw to the double covered receiver?

  • eddie said:

well 999ers, if that was the case alot of receivers would be acting likea.bryant

  • eddie said:

and if we do release him.how much is gonna go against ower cap?

  • harry said:

i wonder if mike robinson could translate to wide receiver?

  • Brandon said:

I like how we keep talking about drafting a WR, when we actually did. Do you know how many catches he had this season? ZERO. Why not try and FINALLY use him? At least see what he is capable of. Seriously, we pretty much traded a decent WR in Lloyd to get him, let’s do something with him.

  • Brandon said:

I speak of Brandon Williams, of course.

  • steve said:

i think bryant needs one more year

  • 49erFan@SD said:

i hope we get rid of that drug attic, he is worthless and even if he does stay he would be suspended for the first two games anyways.

  • Samson said:

he doesnt do drugs he got suspended because he had that DUI last month fuk dont u guys know shit hes not Shawne Merriman he just a fuckin drunk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Corey said:

Defense is the key word here. Why even waste a pick on a wide out?

  • MNM said:

anything said on Cold Pizza was probably said by Skip Bayless, who’s an idiot…i wouldn’t take it too seriously

  • mike said:

we dont need to get calvin johnson dwane jarret is just as good he will fall to our spot i kinda hope we lose this weeken now that were out just to get a higher pick to pick up a calvin johnson or a dwane jarret i thought antonio bryant would be a good playmaker but he is just another T.O. that killed us last time trade him now later 49ers4life

  • eddie said:

everybody says we need a speed receiver to open up ower pass attack. well we do have one in a brandon williams!but i guess we wasted a third round pick on a special teams player.and did dwayne jarrett declare for the nfl yet?!

  • eddie said:

as far as i know, dwayne jarrett, sidney rice, calvin johnson or ted ginn.all underclassmen have not even declared for the n f l yet.

  • harry said:

i dont think that dwayne jarrett is gonna be as good as people think..and people forget steve smith is on that u.s.c. team too.

  • Bob Hamilton said:

We need a quarterback..We will never win with Smith.
It doesn’t matter who we have receiving..period.

  • harry said:

it pisses me off that we are paying alex smith 50million dollars to mature.we cauld have done that with another quarter back in the later roundsand did it cheaper.the offence wont mature till alex smith matures it doesnt matter what receivers we have a.bryant was open alot this year and he didnt get the ball to him.tom brady doesnt have any big play receivers and he still seems to make plays and there defence is only adverage this season.and i have a feeling that drent dilfer is there to teach alex.there is no presure put on alex smith right now to win. and if he throws more than 20xs a game that means more interceptions.but i really blame a lot on the refs.everybody cant touch the quarterbacks you cant touch a receiver after 5 yards.they cant see missed feild goals and they call holding every other play .pretty soon they will call pass interferance on run plays.N.F.L.now stands for(newtard football league).

  • 49erFan@SD said:

Norv Turner should get fired, he sucks, he has the dumbest playes, he never lets Alex smith throw the ball that much, and when he does their are just short passes to frank gore.

  • NYGHTMARE said:

Most of you clowns don’t know what the fuck you are talking about. Alex Smith is the youngest QB in the league and has developed immensely since last season. He will only get better, so stop bitching. And eddie, it’s spelled O-U-R, not “ower.”

  • Scott said:

Okay, Ryan from way up^^^ yeah larry fitz was a number 2 pick a few years ago so their is an amazing wide out that came from the first round. Now 49erfan@SD im having an okay day so i wont bitch you out but let me just say to things about your comment…In the first game of the season alex threw for one TD and 288 yards and he have gained 93 more yards a game now that norv is at the helm. Pretty much you should shut the fuck up. Love the blog erickson, and love hearing from some of the fans (some smart, some dumb its all good though, niners for life).

  • Scott said:

  • eddie said:

nightmare, i have short turn memorie loss from a heart transplant i just had last month and some times i forget how to spell.

  • Brandon said:

I’ve been reading some ridiculous things and I try to be open to others opinions. (Actually, I’m really opinionated, but not with fellow faithful-only exception) But come on guys…it’s getting out of hand. Norv Turner=terrible? Give me a break. That’s absurd. He’s as new to this team as the next guy. Even though I DESPISE the Cowboys with a passion, look what he did to Troy Aikman. (I HATE that guy, but I’m just making a point) Troy was AWFUL his first couple seasons and what do you know…he’s now in the hall of fame with 3 Super Bowl rings. Kind of interesting to me how history is slowing on pace to repeat itself.

Now, yeah, if Alex disappoints NEXT season, then we all should sort of worry a little bit. We are Niner fans…we aren’t used to losing this much for so long…it sucks, I know. But we’ll see. I agree some of it is his fault, but he is young. But it’s just as much his fault as it is his supporting cast. Battle is still transitioning, Bryant is an enigma and plays when he wants to, Davis is a freakin’ rookie!, and the other recievers (I hate to admit it) are completely useless. (Jacobs and Gilmore…yuck) Oh, and Johnson more than likely will be out the door, which, besides injuries, is actually very underrated and dependable. So there is a lot of blame to go around, but remember the youth part and wins don’t magically come over night. It’s called a ‘window’.

Complaints about Smith’s money won’t do us any good either. Who else should have we drafted at the time? Braylon Edwards I get a lot, but who was gonna pass to him? Things are how they are and we should just trust in our team. I do.

Oh and one more thing, the refs have been (for lack of better words) SHITTY. I can handle one mistake here and there, but it seemed to me this season they really had it out for us. Arizona’s field goal and Torry Holt’s fumble come to mind. Right there…could have been playoffs. There’s always next year I guess. I can’t wait!

  • harry said:

well brandon, traded down the pick for braylon edwards and more picks then got kyle orton or jason campbell later in the second round.but at the time we didnt like b.edwards at the time because what tia streets did to us from michigan.but i dont live in the past, you asked im just telling you my oppinion . and im not trying to bash alex smith.what im trying to say since he is so young it will take him a little bit longer to develope and that is why norv turner has limited alex smith only to 20 passes a game . im not an alex smith hater i will give him 3 years to get better and next year will be his third season. and im 34 and more open to other peoples opinion.and all i hear is other people bashing other people because of different opinion on this site.i hear people tell other peaple to shut the fuck up.well if they do that then no one would talk on this sight.for that i will be the next person they tell to shut the fuck up so i will.

49ersFan@SD you’re actin like a little bitch. And before I sig on you i’ll just let you know I had your grandmother over here last night and I fucked her like a little bitch. Then I dug your great grandmother up and I had my way with the bith too. Don’t ever say that about Norv Turner again, he has been makin some beefy calls this year. The ball hasn’t been gettin aired out that much this year, cuze Alex Smith just hasn’t been airin it out. Turner has put them in plenty of situations to bomb it down the field. It seems like everytime they do bomb it, it gets over thrown barely or it gets caught but Kwame gets called for the holding. Its been a crazy fuckin ridiculous season. Norv has been makin great calls on those reverse plays either to Gilmore or Battle even my boy and yo boy VD. He called one at least once a game and they worked a majority of the time. He did more than just that but just given a valid example. So before you go around fuckin talkin like you know what’s goin on you better figure out what the fuck is goin on. Don’t be a mark ass, sucka ass, K Y jelly packin ass bitch makin assumptions. Cuze you and I both know only bitches make assumptions, and bitches gag the cock. That must mean you wanna gag the cock then, that is if you a bitch. So re-revaluate what you gotta say and get yo knowledge up.

bob hamilton:you are a dumbass!did you not watch the seattle game?I recall he threw two touchdowns and ran for another(should of been two but there was holding)I don’t watch very many 49er games (because they don’t come on in central america)and I know alex smith is good.besides who would we bring in….another young quarterback so he can develop for another 5 years.that’s the last thing we need…we need defense

  • yourmom said:

bob hamilton you must be a raider fan because they badly need a quarterback, you meant to type..we need a quarterback..we will never win with andrew walter..it doesn’t matter if we have randy moss

  • Ryan said:

ARE ALL OF YOU SERIOUS??? Someone is saying that we should have KEPT Brandon “Alligator Arms” Lloyd? We need a quarterback? Norv Turner is a wash? No offense, but that is the farthest thing from the truth!!! Number one, Lloyd has done nothing for the Redskins…pure truth…NOTHING!!! He misses so many passes it isn’t even funny. On top of that…he’s a lockeroom divider…Brandon Lloyd is serving his purpose for us…getting us a fourth round pick. This guy has admitted to intentionally dropping balls….NEVER, NEVER should we EVER take him back…period!!! Alex Smith, someone on here got it right…we need to wait until the end of next season to see where he is at. After watching Vince Young some niner fans are like “WTF”, but who can be as good as Vince Young…the guy is a freak. Our offense could have reacted better if we had a defense that could have stopped a pop warner team. Smith needs a consistent number one receiver…he didn’t have that last year. Arnaz Battle proved to be a consistent number two so we need to keep him. Vernon Davis is a ROOKIE….next year he will dominate…KNOW THAT!!! The only reciever we could EVER think of wasting our first pick on is Calvin Johnson…not Jarrett, not Smith, not anyone else. Even then I think it would be a mistake….we NEED a defensive linemen with that pick. Maybe pick up a 6′4″ 225 pount receiver in the 5th or sixth round to put some pressure on the other wideouts, but it would be stupid to waste our first pick on a receiver because they rarely ( I didn’t say never) work out whe picked that high. Norv Turner is a blessing to our team. Mike McCarthy’s system was way too complicated!!! That probably scared the shit out of Alex Smith…what did McCarthy ever do sooooo well with the saints anyway. Not what they are doing now, I can tell you that. Norv Turner needs to stay…we will find NO ONE BETTER…NO ONE!!! Also, I hate to dissapoint anyone out there, but we ARE going to draft a d-linement…maybe a saftey with our first pick so be prepared for that. I highly doubt that Nolan will go after a receiver.

  • Ryan said:

Bryant just doesn’t fit the organization. Yes, he is talented, but also has one of the hugest chips on his shoulder I have ever seen. When I listen to him speak he sounds like a mix of the old player who wore 81 and Barlow mixed. I don’t know what kind cap hit we’ll take if we cut him, but I am willing to bet they’re lots of clauses in his contract based on the fact that he has fucked up everywhere else he has been. So, maybe that hit won’t be as bad as we thought. Also, we could try to trade him to the Vikings who are looking for a receiver and also have a rep for taking REALLY troubled receivers under their wing. We need to get a receiver who is a little more intelligent and sounds a little less selfish. BRYANT HAS PROVED ONE THING DURING THIS SEASON…HE HAS NO PROBLEM THROWING OUR TEAM UNDER THE BUS!!!! NO PROBLEM THROWING ANYONE ON OUR TEAM UNDER THE BUS!!! My personal opinion (which is crap) is that if we won’t get smacked too bad by getting rid of him then do it. Cold Pizza wouldn’t have reported that if it wasn’t extremely common knowledge in the NFL.

  • mike honcho said:

hey lets all just quit bitching at each other like little school girls, what are we raider fans!alex smith has been playing well, his passer rating is like 75.sumthin and he has 15 touchdowns last year didn’t he have only one touchdown?,and wasn’t it against the freekin texans? I know smith isn’t on fire, but look at Joe montana and steve young, both of them sat the bench for a couple years before they got to start, and look at smith, he played his rookie year, and this year so you know a couple years from now he is gonna be freekin bad!

  • mike honcho said:

and not to mention he has little talent around him except for battle and gore, and little protection from his line except for larry allen.

FYI…our friend mike rumph was put on the waiver wire from the redskins today!! Come on guys, there really isn’t any reason to talk shit to one another…I now I am going to get someone talking shit to me, but, OH WELL! Alex Smith’s rookie year should be forgotten. What did he have….seriously….what weapons did he have? NONE!!! An o-line that had more holes in it than swiss cheese, a receiver core that was by far the worst in the league…Battle was inured for a good portion of the year, Eric Johnson was injured all year (surprise, surprise), and on top that he had Mr. I’m gonna get my shine Kevan Barlow. That is pathetic. I can’t blame him for having a bad rookie year. By the way, he only started half of those games because we were still believing in Rattay. Not to mention that we had Mike McCarthy…Mr. Trick Play. You don’t run super complex plays with that kind of an o-line and that kind of a receiver core, and expect a rookie quarterback to pull that off. I am glad McCarthy is gone because now we have Norv Turner who is a proven offensive coordinator that done his job on WINNING TEAMS. McCarthy cannot say that. Yeah, he had an alright year when they still had Ricky Williams (before he became a pot head), an o line that was pretty damn good, Duece McCallister, and a great receiver core. Did they ever have a playoff team when he was there….NO…NOT ONE!!! Norv is the right man for our job and we are going to the playoffs next year. I would have liked to have gone this year, too, but if I want in one hand and shit in the other, which is going to fill up faster??? Next year we will have the pieces together and we will be ready to do what we need to.

  • eddie said:

  • eddie said:

i just hope we draft some body that can tackle and stop the run.

  • jason said:

we will end up getting someone like cornerback, john talley, from duke.

  • Ryan said:

For some reason I think that many quality corners will fall to the second and third round.

  • Richard said:

My 5 cents worth… If we go ahead and draft a WR, he will need at least to years to be our #1 WR. Its a proven fact that WR need 3 years to develop. Our organiation doesnt have three more years to wait for WR to develop. Where we stand right now, we can get q couple of solid defensive players (Rounds 1 and 2) that can contribute from day one. And to be honest Id trade some picks to get another first rounder. We can afford to invest some picks and get a solid DE and LB. But thats just me.

  • jason said:

  • GREG said:

CLEMENTS, A THOMAS, OR BRIGGS..THEN DRAFT DL OR A WR…I HAVE MY EYE ON LANDRY THOUGH

  • Big M said:

After this year’s rookie class, there’s no such thing as proven fact. Look at Marques Colston. He was the 3rd to last pick and look at what he did. There are a couple guys with his size in this year’s draft (if they declare) that we should keep our eye on. Plus, there aren’t any marquee names out there as far as wide receivers go in the free agent market. We need to get what we can as soon as we can. So if it mean drafting a receiver, then we need to do it NOW.
We need to use free agency to shore up the defense because we can’t build it on a bunch of rookies. We won’t be able to contend next year if we do so. We need veteran players on defense and we need to add at least one playmaker at the wide receiver position. Antonio Bryant is not the answer.

  • Ryan said:

Forgive my extreme ignorance, but can someone please tell me who this Laron Landry is. I should know who he is, but I don’t. I am guessing that he is a defensive player. 3 years sounds pretty accurate, but can the niners wait that long? Should they wait that long on Jarrett or Smith or Meechum from Tennessee? We are not going to be in a position for Calvin Johnson…I’m trying to talk shit, but it is EXTREMELY unlikely that he will be available when it is our turn to draft. Marques Colston happens every 20 years. You aren’t going to see someone just break through and dominate like that anytime soon again. I’m not saying don’t waste a pick on a receiver, but we shouldn’t be doing it with any picks in rounds 1-3.

  • Ryan said:

Again, I just think we should see how Delanie Walker and Brandon Williams progress before we start thinkin, ” OH MY GOD!!! WE’RE GONNA DIE IF WE DON’T DRAFT A RECEIVER WITH OUR FIRST PICK! DWAYNE JARRETT, DWAYNED JARRETT!!” If we do this then we aren’t attempting to balance out our team. It wasn’t our offense that was ranked in the crapper this season. We need to improve that and bring some talent in. Nate Clements, Adalius Thomas, Lance Briggs, and that safety from the Patriots aren’t even going to look at our team if we don’t seem serious about bringing in some serious talent to back them up should they chose to come to the niners.

  • Big M said:

Free Agency happens before the draft. Therefore, we shore up our defense through free agency so we don’t have to draft as much for need. That can get you in trouble. If that’s the case, and we can get Jarrett, I can’t see us passing him up. I also think that with Jerry Sullivan’s coaching, we can get an ultra-talented receiver, such as Jarrett, to produce right away. If we don;t get Jarrett, this class is deep in receivers, so hopefully we get someone because we really need to acquire a franchise receiver through the draft. Otherwise, we need to get a bunch of solid receivers as the Patriots have done. Either way, we are still pretty thin at receiver.

So basically Bryant is going to stay and all of commotion was for nothing. By the way…to the founder of this website…when are we going to open the draft thread. I know the answer is “after the broncos game” but I had to ask. Also, could you ask Nolan what players have caught his eye for the draft and whether he is going to coach the north south game again.

  • mike vick said:

yeah tell nolan to make some good draft picks and tell him to win all the games next year

  • Ryan said:

I don’t know about all of that…Nolan seems to be handling the draft pretty well. I just wanted to see if he could get Nolan to give up what he was looking for…after the broncos game because it would be pointless to do it before. Draft day is Christmas in April. That is the reason why I asked about the north-south game. He seemed to have a great grasp on the players that he drafted. Again, I think we need to see more Delanie Walker and Brandon Williams before we start having a fit. Also, I was wondering if we ARE going to use Williams as a receiver or just a return man. It is said that he ran GREAT routes and was VERY fundamentally sound…not to mention really fast. Sorry if I came off like I was barking orders…I just wanted t know what Nolan is thinking about with regard to this offseason. I expect a major overhaul on defense. Look for several players to be let go from that side of the ball. Unless, Nolan is going to do some heavy trading for higher draft picks this year because the niners have a lot this year.

Eddie have you been watchin the 49er games at all this season? If so have you even been payin fuckin attention? Our defense has been solid as fuck stoppin the run. If anything our defense did well it was stoppin the run. Not many RBs went over 100 yds. on us this year. Even when we got blown out against the Chiefs. I know LJ had over 100 yds. but he only got that because the Chiefs were completing every pass they were throwin. So we had to keep more guys in the back, and we were fucked by the end of the 1st quarter of that game. Anyhow we need someone that can get to the QB and then a shutdown CB. This year gettin to the QB has been a huge problem for the 9ers. I can’t count how many times a QB should have been sacked and he would just outrun our D-Lineman and pass down field. Anyway Eddie just fuckin know what your talkin about before you talk about it. Cuze you don’t know what the fuck your talkin about and you look like an idiot. You’ve been DICK SLAPPED BOYYYYYYYYYYYY!

OK, I have been reading all of this for quite awhile, and I have just written on the 2007 Draft board forum on this site (you should check it out). There is a lot of ignorant shit on this paticular forum though. No Bryant will not be gone.
Donte Stallworth is from Sacramento, grew up in Rancho Cordova in Sacramento and grew up a big 49ers fan. He now plays for the Eagles and is in his final year of his rookie contract. He will most likely sign with the 49ers in March as long as they present a simular contract to that they have so awarded to Bryant (20 mil. total/15 mil. of it as the sign bonus, for 4 years, supposedly). Then Bryant won’t be the only true down field threat and opposing teams will not be be able to bracket double cover Bryant on nearly every play. As for Calvin Johnson, he will definintly go within the first 5 picks barring any major injury between now and the draft, so no we will not be able to get him, without trading nearly every draft pick we can trade. Teams cannot double cover Gore, Bryant, Stallworth and Vernon Davis (who is devoloping actually very well) all on the same play. It is because of the whole double coverage on Bryant as for why his numbers are so low this season and why he has been so fustrated, not just the few errant passes, and why Battle is in man coverage and always seems open, and with two major down field threats, it would be brave for another team to stack 8 in the box to account and defend against Gore like they did this season, having both Stallworth and Bryant would force most defenses into the Cover 2, Nickel or double SS inorder to account for Vernon Davis.
And Mary, Brian Gilmore is not a bad reciever, he runs a 4.2-4.3 40m and was brought in cheaply by Sullivan in hopes that his speed could help offset defenses since most DB’s in the league can only run a 4.45 40m, and we gave nothing up for him. All of this is why Gore and Battle’s recieving numbers are so high. They are the dump off recievers and why Coach Turner is very deliberate on designing two dump-off’s into nearly every pass play. Alex Smith was in only his second season and his second offensive coordinator. he is expected to make his decision within 2.8 seconds of the snap with his throw gone. And with a broken O.Line he has excelled. Having watched opposing D-linemen getting to him in less than a second after the ball is snapped (thank you Kwame Harris for your footwork and great penalty acheiving ability). Thinking of why in a standard Offensive line players are rated and evaluated to that the left side of the line is primarily for pass protection, and the right side is primarily for the run, on the 49ers we are the complete opposite of that for that of a right handed quarterback, a right handed QB normally has his plays taylor made for him. So that means that the 49ers offensive plays are designed by team talent level & by position, not by the quarterbacks abilities & talents. So yes he has done very well in only his second year. And hopefully we can score Leonard Davis in the Free agent market from the Cardinals inorder to shore up our Right side. Cause with only these two additions our offense would be so much more verstile and more comparable to the high scoring west coast offense’s that WE are used to and grew up watching.
