What We Learned: Rams @ 49ers
Sun, 16/11/08 – 16:31 | 34 Comments

The 49ers won their third game of the season and first victory for interim head coach Mike Singletary. From the first half it was all 49ers. They ran the ball well, passed the ball well and didn’t have any stupid penalties or turnovers that hurt them.

Briggs Going Back to Cali?

Submitted by FNN Staff on Saturday, 5 January 200832 Comments

ChicagoSports.com is reporting that two Chicago Bears free agents, Lance Briggs and Bernard Berrian are looking to possibly get back to California. The place both are from. Infact one NFL executive expects the 49ers to land Lance Briggs. The 49ers were said to have tried to engineer a trade for the Pro Bowl linebacker before this season’s Oct. 16 trade deadline, but league rules prohibited the Bears’ franchise player from signing a long-term deal with another team. As for the talk regarding Briggs and San Francisco he is hardly discouraging it.

“I would hope the 49ers are interested, as well as other teams,” Briggs said Friday. “It just tells you that you are valued around this league.”

Don’t forget the 49ers signed Nate Clements to a long term deal the following year after a trade didn’t happen between them and the Bills.

A Briggs and Willis would make for quite a dynamic LB duo… let’s get it done! While we’re at it go ahead and sign Berrian too.

  • AM said:

Think of this, Manny Lawson, Lance Briggs, Patrick Willis, and someone else. Fuck yea. Those three are scary.

  • ninaz said:

more like Manny Lawson, Patrick Willis, Brandon Moore, Lance Briggs.

  • MSouza said:

I love that the niners are signing free agents again, it’s good to not be in cap hell.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

Briggs is a must sign….however, I hope the niners don’t forget to find a BY replacement. I don’t care if they acquire it from the draft or free agency as long as they bring in quality. I like Walt Harris and Tarrell Brown, but we still should explore the idea of finding an eventual replacement for Harris because Tarrell Brown suffered a MAJOR injury the last game of the season…who knows if he is going to pan out. Hey TBC you think you might want to live up to your contract instead of being a NOTHING on the field? Last year HE WAS THE SINGLE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT ON THE DEFENSE!!!! Manny couldn’t help what happened to him. TBC was worthless out there.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

Another thing, I hate to be a nay sayer, but Lawson also suffered a major injury and WHO KNOWS HE WILL RECOVER TO FULL CAPABILITY either. That kind of scares me because he looked REALLY good before the injury…I hope he doesn’t lose a step or two because of that injury PERMANENTLY.

  • ninersgold said:

I think he can recover, Donovan McNabb injured his ACL late last year and it took him about exactly one year till the injury he suffered seemed to heal, he looks like he is back in shape now. Manny Lawson got injured earlier in the year, so he should be at 100% by week 4 at the latest and week 2 at the earliest.

  • Los Banos Jerry said:

Now wouldn’t Donavan McNabb look good in Red & Gold. He wants out of
Philly. Whats his contract status. Trade Smith and a 3rd rounder for
    McNabb

  • ninaz said:

^^^ Are you stupid! smith and a 3rd for Mcnaab, if it was Anderson or someone of that sort then yes. Mcnabb will be released this season giving the niners a shot to throw money not players but if he was resigned hed be worth a 5th solo.

  • AM said:

we need a d line, badly. Now we have 0 good players on the line because by is gone….

  • Los Banos Jerry said:

Smith and a 3rd,,,,,,,,,,You would have to give a 3rd, so they would take Smiths huge contract…..Of course nobody would. When
you Say anderson he didn’t do anything the last 5 weeks of the season.

  • JNova80 said:

I would like for us to get Briggs and Berrian, I’m a fan of both players. I don’t see us going after McNabb, because I think the Niners will stick with Hill as the starter and Smith healthy is a pretty decent back up.

  • L said:

Not only is briggs in the mix.. There is a report that the niners are considering FA Lee Suggs of the ravens.. Which makes sense with Nolan back.. Plus we are 20 mill under the cap.. So picture this.. Lawson (who was a monster before getting hurt) Willis, Briggs and Suggs.. We have the money and the players have reasons to come here.. So Make it happen.. if we get those guys.. then we draft 2 DLs and 4 WRs in the draft.. Haha 4 WRs is a lil much I know.. but if 2 pan out thats a successful draft..

  • ninersgold said:

Terrel Suggs you mean, I know, that would make our defense hard to beat. The 3-4 defense we run needs good linebackers and a good defensive line. If we do get these guys, then we would just need to find a defensive tackle in the draft,to make this defense a top defense.

  • Los Banos Jerry said:

L that sounds pretty good, now all we need is a QB….Smith is a bust. Dilfer is washed up. Hill is unsigned and a 2 game wonder.
He didn’t beat anybody. Unless we fix The QB problem if won’t
matter who else we sign. 2008 5-11 repeat. I wish for more but it
    isn’t gonna happen.

  • L said:

Well that is true.. but our new Gm scotty said they would either sign or draft another QB.. but whats a QB with out the right system.. We need CAM cameron.. This whole chan gaily thing is freakin ridiculous.. His offenses never ranked in the top 18 and we are considering him.. PSHHHH.. CAM is the man for us.. we closly resemble the chargers when he was there.. good back good TE and medicore WR.. He knows how to develop QBs.. I wouldnt count out Smith just yet.. I mean 3 OC in 3 years.. Still the youngest starting QB.. Younger than Russel Edwards Lemon and those guys were takin in THIS draft.. but im Not sold on the guy either.. He was given the job didnt earn it.. thats why our Gm is gonna bring in a new QB and with Hill possibly resigned.. Qb copetition.. Smith will have to earn it.. and when you play against someone your that much better.. so Lets go CAM lets get Suggs and Briggs and see what happens.. and thanks ninersgold it is terrel

  • FireNolan said:

Los Banos Jerry… you are a very negative guy, but I must agree we need to go geta quarterback, Hill needs to be able throw the ball accurately over 20 yards. He can’t, he would be a great red zone QB because he is very good at short passes. But then again the Ravens did win with Trent Dilfer at QB so…

  • Ryan the 1st said:

Nolan better HURRY THE HELL UP because it looks like the Ravens aren’t wasting ANY TIME WHATSOEVER trying to find a coach FAST!!! Meanwhile Nolan is taking his sweet time!!!

When does the free agency signing period begin? Lance Briggs would be great but we also need some more d-line help. Maybe Ray McDonald will step it up and take a spot on the DL. Melvin Oliver will also be back. All this D talk is great but we REALLY need OL and WR help. I don’t know about the rest of you but there were WAY too many dropped passes by our WR this year. Our QB’s would all had MUCH better seasons without all the drops. Maybe replacing one Jerry (Sullivan) with another Jerry (Rice) might help our WR core. J. Sullivan has not done much with our WR since he arrived.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

That would be a dream, but I don’t believe Rice aka best receiver ever would take on such a job…..however, I WOULD LOVE IT….he would show them what hard work and dedication is all about.

  • Los Banos Jerry said:

I don’t try to be negative. I’ve been a season ticket holder since 1982. This is the worst team since the Joe Thomas years 76-78.
The ravens did win with Dilfer, but he was 10 years younger, and 1
good year doesn’t make a good QB. The drafts haven’t been very good.
They have been picking in the top ten for 3 years. We have Gore, Staley, and Willis. Everyone else has been a bust or average. Every
WR is a bust. Snyder, and Baas are below average. Allen is to old.
We’re last in sacks. And 1st in giving up sacks. I was hoping Holmgren would lose today. And become available. Oh well. I think
Cam is our best option. But he’s not a QB guru. like Turner. Our
best bet is to Fire Nolan. Either McCloughhan can’t find OL, and WR
    or Nolan nixed his picks.

This video talks about coaching changes. Fast foward to 2:30 and it talks about Mike Nolan and eventually who our new offensive coordinator should be.

  • samra said:

NO NO and No…briggs would be a waste of money….id rather see money spent on offense or on the d-line…we dont need any more linebackers our future is set with Willis and lawson and we could put haralson at SLB to replace Tully and cut derek smith and start either ulbrich or Moore

  • samra said:

id rather see us sign terrell Suggs thatn Briggs…we’re set at ILB…the way willis plays its as if we have 12 men on the feild

  • madman said:

Manny Lawson will is a bust. He wont make it back.

  • Michael said:

We arent set at the other ILB though. We need someone to play alongside Willis who will make offenses think twice before gameplanning around Willis.

  • Cory said:

that would be awesome if we could get Briggs to go inside next to Willis and if he is avaible sign Suggs to play on the opposite side of Lawson

  • Rob said:

I agree that Briggs would be a good move. Banta-Cain hasn’t panned out like they hoped. So, Briggs would be a nice improvement, with Banta-Cain being a great backup (like he was in New England). Then, just promote Brandon Moore to starting inside LB and you’ve got a great LB corp. And, while Berrian isn’t the answer to our receiver problems, if we would get him and draft a receiver in the first round (and maybe trade up to make sure we get a good one), that would be a big step toward righting that side of the ball, too.

  • Shane said:

Briggs obviously would be a great signing, and would set us up with excellent linebackers for a few years.

There are also some rather great defensive line free agents, though I’d imagine most will be franchised (Jared Allen, Haynesworth).

  • criz559 said:

YEAH BRIGGS WOULD BE A NICE ADD BUT WAT THE NINERS REALLY NEED IS OFFENSIVE LINE-MEN CAUSE WITHOUT PROTECTION WAT CAN THE QB REALLY DO NOTHING!!!!EXAMPLE LOOK AT WAT HAPPENED IN THE SUPERBOWL BRADY DIDNT HAVE GOOD PROTECTION SO HE SUCKED THAT GAME

I guess the niners have met with Derek Smith’s agent discussing a pay cut.
