What We Learned: Rams @ 49ers
Sun, 16/11/08 – 16:31 | 34 Comments

The 49ers won their third game of the season and first victory for interim head coach Mike Singletary. From the first half it was all 49ers. They ran the ball well, passed the ball well and didn’t have any stupid penalties or turnovers that hurt them.

York has to take a long look at the coaches. Nolan should have this team playing better and it is regressing.

But I’m sure come Monday we’ll hear all the bullshit about character…blah…blah…blah

    3 INT’s?

    Now thats WTF?

  • matt said:

I firmly believe that passion is the bane of rationality - and I am quite passionate about the niners. So anything I write about them is going to be less intelligent than something I write about a more objective topic.

I love Nolan’s character and integrity. I hate his conservatism and game management skills. I now consider his coaching subpar (the amount of penalties and errors are directly attributable to the coaching staff). I believe he and the team were shafted (without vaseline - and that’s as uncouth as I’ll get) by the Norv Turner situation, and that Hostler is unprepared to be a coordinator in the NFL. I believe worse tragedies have happened to other teams and they have responded better - that reflects on the coaching. Unfortunately, it is now a situation where the things I like about Nolan do not measure up against the things I dislike about him.

I said three years ago (verbally, not on the web), that I would give Alex Smith three years before I would begin to judge him. We are almost to that point, and he seems to be regressing. Some of that is his fault and some is the coaches - I will hold firm and believe in him until next year.

I am incredibly disapointed. Both our d-line and o-line are playing terribly. Our receivers can’t get open, our corners back off receivers because they don’t trust the line. Mistakes are rampant all over the field.

Don’t even know why I posted all that…there’s not a suggestion in there for how to get better.
    Here’s one..

Callaghan (Nebraska’s ex-coach) for OC next year. West Coast offense, proven coordinator. Just a thought…

we lost this fucking game because we kept kicking field goals when we had all the momentum to score a touchdown
it’s like the rams game all over again
fire nolan’s bitch ass, he’s too conservative
the game was over when vernon was tripped up at the 1 yard line

  • Danny said:

Ryan, your right about heads rolling…For some strange reason, the players are not playing for the coaches this year. I didn’t get to watch the game live, but from what i understand i think alot of players are quitting because the coaching staff isn’t very affective. Nolan and a bunch of his coaching staff needs to be fired. The 49ers need to go in another direction. I don’t have a certain coach in mind, but i have lost all respect for Nolan. They have to much talent to lose to the Falcons. Did i expect to win here on out…NO! I did believe that the 49ers could beat the Falcons though.

    Well said MATT. BRAVO!!!!

Whether it is a business or a football team it always starts with management. Almost all businesses fail because management doesn’t have a clue how to direct people or do small things that make a big difference. The great thing about football, you get to see horrible management on T.V. The fans that watch the game got to see that! For the record Nolan did a GREAT job rebuilding this team for ZERO. I do not know what happen this year, but what I can say is that this team isn’t playing for the coaching staff! With that being said, the 49ers should move in another direction.

  • Danny said:

NINERS FAITHFUL your exactly right. We lost the game when Vernon Davis was tripped at the 1 yard line. (ever hear of high stepping?) We should have faked the field goal after that too but whatcha goin do. I hope all those Alex Smith lovers are ready to take his shlong out there mouths now. One word “DYSFUNCTION”

  • Danny said:

To the fans that are pissed off at the 49ers, you should realize now we have hit rock bottom and therefore you should have no more expectations. If they lose next week, they will, you won’t be mad because this team will be lucky to hit 4 wins this season.

  • matt said:

Thank you for the “well said”. What do you guys think about Callaghan for OC?

  • Lowrance said:

Alex needs to spend the whole week on deep passes and deep outs….

  • NdP said:

Matt, I fully agree with what you wrote.

    Excellent.

Plus, I think Callaghan would be a good choice for OC.

If the 49ers are to keep Nolan, they should have him focus on coaching, period. Bring in a damn good OC and THEM fully control the offense.

This playing for field goal crap and lack of intensity/urgency is killing me.

How on earth were we huddling up with less than two minutes going into halftime? It was as if we were simply going to for a field goal or to run out the clock.

  • flash80 said:

This is bad, very bad. I want Nolans head Rollin.

He is not a good coach.

  • Jason D's nuts said:

The season in not OVER! All I hear is the negativity being bought about nolan and the team (which they do stink). Nolan is the best coach we’ve had for past 10 years. Replace the offenisve coordintor with one that’s at least adequate, were a playoff team. I realize the only reason we lost this game was because of two over thrown passes by smith which were an easy 14 points. By the way, “Where the f*** was Ashely Lelie.” For once the offensive coordinator wasn’t the probelm except for a couple dump passes where no one was in sight to even block. It seems to be obvious plays that we’re calling which the defense sniffs out.

Just realize this……………….The rest of our schedule is fairly easy. If we block for Smith, Smith doesn’t overthrow receiver’s by 5 yards (which was 14 easy points), hostler’s pulls his head out of his ass, offensive line takes accountability for their assignments, and will someone please catch a ball then we make the playoffs. It’s that easy.

Remember that the defense has nothing do with our failed season, it’s the offense. Please someone step up!

Darrell Jackson isn’t worth the paper his check is printed on.

  • El Mobre said:

I agree with Jason, but I also wanted to add that if we not only get rid of Hostler, but our entire offensive line, then Smith is going to be more relaxed in the pocket and be able to get his feet set, and therefore won’t be overthrowing recievers. Think about it, if you’re constantly worried about being hit, would you make a good throw? Hell no.

  • Cody said:

haha are u guys idiots. Trust me im a huge 49er fan but u guys must be crazy who think he still have a chance. Were not going to win the wild card and seattle is winning right now. How can you ask someone too step up. They’ve had this whole season too, if they havent by now they wont. Fuck nolan too hes a little scared pussy coach. and alex smith has no confidence hes a little girl. and we cant even beat the falcons lol oh my god were the worst team in the league

  • Danny said:

I just remembered something…Didn’t Banta-Cain guarantee a win? Tell me Mr. Banta-Cain, how did that game turn out?

I will make my own guarantee…the 49ers suck donkey balls and will loose more games in the future.

How do you like them apples?

Just watched the Nolan Presser and it’s the same ol’ shit coming out of his mouth. Feel free to speculate on your own.

Just once it would be nice for him to go off and say what’s really on his mind. Kick some ass in the locker room and fire that awful S.O.B. of an OC!!

What’s gonna be Nolan?. His ass or your’s? Sooner or later the owners will make that decision for you!!!!

    Willis breaks bone in hand
Patrick Willis, who played most of his senior season at Ole Miss with a cast on his right hand, may have to do the same this season. Willis said he hurt his right hand on the 49ers’ second defensive series. X-rays taken after the game showed a break on one of the small bones of his hand. Willis was wearing a black plastic cast as he left the locker room.
The injury is not likely to keep him out of action. After all, Willis didn’t leave the game and led the 49ers — again — with 10 tackles!!

    Defensive Rookie of the Year!!!!!!!!

  • wendell said:

it amounts to bad coaching folks. on offense, our guys still look unprepared for the other teams blitz packages. we’re still dropping catchable balls at an alarming rate. alex is missing wide open receivers for six. there’s talent on this team; my concern is the talent on the sideline. our coaching staff isn’t getting these guys ready. i don’t think there is anything worse than expecting your team to do well in the season and ultimately being stuck with the team we have now. this stinks.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

MOST of the players we picked up through free agency haven’t shown up…this could be a nightmare for the niners because they have gotten their BIG CONTRACTS that we clearly overpaid for. NO, I am not talking about Clemens, but Banta Cain SUCKS, DJAX SUCKS, Aubrayo Franklin has done NOTHING, Michael Lewis is better than Keith Lewis….BARELY! These guys clearly don’t care about the niners because they are bringing their F game to our beloved niners. I am starting to wonder (in light of the falcons game) if we need to use BOTH of our first picks on receivers because the incredible midgets (Battle and DJAX) didn’t bring shit to that game except some MAJOR ALLIGATOR ARMS!!! Someone stop me if I am wrong, but they need to be cut. Stop the bleeding on offense by cutting them at the end of the season….yes we will take a cap hit, but then we will save SOME money. These guys clearly aren’t going to get it done. DJAX and Battle didn’t even know their routes they were supposed to run. I am not making excuses, but I clearly saw at least three times when each of them didn’t run the correct route. There is NO EXCUSE FOR TWO VETERANS TO NOT HAVE THAT STUFF DOWN!!! Right now I am looking at that receiver from Oklahoma State and Mario Manningham with wishful thinking because they know how to run routes and catch a high pass on a fade route in the end zone. It is kind of hard for Alex Smith to throw to midgets…especially when they can’t get ANY separation. We are going to keep Jonas Jennings so might as well not talk about it anymore, but we might want to think about scouting some Heitman and Larry Allen replacements. Larry actually had a great game, but he is GONE after this year. Plus, Smiley is gone and Kwame…that is three spots up for grabs with the o line.

  • Ken Dorsey said:

When I played with the Niners I lead our team against the Super Bowl championship team the New England Patriots and we almost won. If I had of been your starter today against the Falcons, I can promise you we would’ve won and I wouldnt have thrown any INT’s especially not as many as Smith did (3) LMAO.

I keep hearing everyone blaming the coaches and or the OC and the O line. Well I got news for all of you, this is the same crap that has been being said since Jeff Garcia took over for Steve Young.

I (Dorsey) didnt even get a fair shot. Not to mention all the other Qb’s the Niners have went through. How would anyone pick Rattay over me or a friggin bachelor for that matter not to mention MF’n Trent Dilfer…. Dilfer?…. cmon.

And now Alex Smith, gimme a break. The only football his pint sized hands should be throwing is maybe a nerf one. Smith sucks and until the Niners get an Elite QB such as myself it wont matter who your coaches or your OC’s are or your O line, you will not be a playoff caliber team…. Ever.

Look how many coaches and OC’s this team has already gone through in the past couple years, things still havent gotten better and firing Nolan and or Hostler wont make things any better as the last 10 years will prolly show you. Nolan and Hostler are just fine.

They just need a QB that everyone can be confident in, including the OC. Which he’s not confident in Smith or else he’d prolly let him throw the ball more, but every time he does, well as you saw today against the friggin Falcons defense he throws INT’s, prolly cause the pigskin is to big for his baby hands.

Im sure if Hostler had a QB he could be confident in AKA a good QB we would prolly be winning some games especially against the Saints and Falcons. But its not Hostlers fault that Nolan is WAY over paying Smith. And because he’s so highly paid they cant just bench him, they have to use him because of how much money they have tied into him They already look dumb for it, they dont want to look even more dumb by getting rid of him after he was not only drafted first but also so overly paid without proving himself and still hasnt proved himself after ALL THIS TIME.

So dont blame Hostler, blame whoever it was that drafted Smith and more importantly blame the ones that wont just let Smith go (Prolly Mr. York himself or Jr)….
Because he’s just a sub par QB, LIKE IT OR NOT and he wont be leading anyone to the SB or the playoffs for that matter.

Oh and stop using the O line as an excuse, if your O line cant protect you try this cool little thing that we call scrambling in the football world.

    Yours truly,
    Kenneth S Dorsey

  • MoneyMike said:

PLAYCALLING! its the end of the game, we got less than a minute left in the game and were 70yrds away and needing a TD and i see how many dump off passes! i mean WTF. these little 5 yrd passes to a RB dont do shit. thats what the defense wants us to do and of course we go right along. we got to many players who put up ZEROS in games too. ZERO catches jackson, ZERO tackles banta-cain, ZERO TD passes Smith, ZERO blocking o- line, ZERO sacks D - line, ZERO clue nolan and hoster = ZERO wins unless something changes

  • Ken Dorsey said:

    Your right Money Mike,

The OC only has enough confidence is Smith to allow him to throw 5 yards max any farther and his tiny hands may just shatter into dust. Not to mention he cant grip the ball hard enough due to his child hands to throw the ball any farther than 5 yards at a time.

As I said before, if we had a decent qb Hostler would prolly call plays that ask for more passing yards but considering infant hands is our QB, 5 yards is all we get per pass or else it 3 INT’s against the Falcons D… O wait that actually happened…. Today.

The Niners need change and what they need to change is their QB.

  • tony said:

everybody…..just listen to yourselves!!! this is the same shit we’ve been complaining about since garcia and t.o left. stop bitching. this team is owned by a non-football person and he was the beginning of the end for our team. dr. dork is the person who should be gone first. then the rest of the freakin management.

and smith….oh god…..smith, in my book, is just as bad as druckinmiller. i think that’s how you spelled that damn name.

promote singletary to head coach before he’s gone.

This is the first time I’ve said this but probably not the last. This Organization Died with Bill Walsh. The 49ers will continue to be the laughing stock for many years,as we go through head coaches,offensive/defensive coordinators, and 1st round busts. But just remember we’ve had the two of the greatest quarterbacks, the greatest wide reciever, and the greatest defensive back to ever pay the game wear the red and gold and bring us five Vince Lombardi trophies. So for these many years that we will continue to suck nuts and lose,go out and buy yourself a copy of America’s game DVD and Remember the good times.

It just comes down to play calling plane and simple.

There’s nothing wrong with Alex Smith, he’s a good QB. I laugh at the Smith haters to prayed to the football Gods to have him come back from his injury and now you boo him. C’mon guys, your creditibitly is shrinking with every post.

You can’t have it both ways.

Norv is truly missed and it shows. I don’t think Nolan has much of a clue to the offensive side of the football and sadly is leaving it up to a first year OC. And it shows. Poor playing calling in key situations, poor usage of personnel and lack of experience is a reciepe for a 2-6 team.

On the football field and in life you can have all the talent and potential in the world but if you don’t have the right people to show you how to develop it, then its wasted.

  • Ninerfan81 said:

    (add to my earlier post)

IE: Patrick Willis has Mike Singletary. Can you imagine if Singletary wasn’t here? No way P-Willis is as good as he is this fast!!

Last year Alex Smith HAD Norv and everyone benefited. Nolan just left Norv due his thing.

    End of discussion.

this is what our team coulda been in that round plus the 2nd and 3rd picks of the 2005 draft:
in the first round we coulda had Demarcus Ware, or shawn merriman and if we deceided on a qb, jason campbell.

    2nd round coulda been’s:
Lofa Tatupu, if needed a wr, Vincent Jackson, we got David Bass

    3rd round pick Frank Gore.

    Just imagine what coulda been.

    Alex Smith is a BUST!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldnt believe that…. they ended up getting a touchdown outta it that if we would just held them to a field goal it woulda changed the outcome but of course they got 20 yards on a 3rd & 19! Insane!!!!! wheres the Damn Dime Package in that situation

Im a bad OC and an even worse Head Coach you guys are better off without me.

Hostler will pull through for you guys in another year or so all he needs in a decent QB to lead your offense down the field something the Niners unfortunately dont have.

We play the RAMS, the same team that will be winless in week 11 (they play the Saints week 10)

Can you fuckin’ imagine if we lose to this team in week #11? OMG, if so I can’t even hold my head up with any sort of Niner pride.

Sorry to say, but they need to get rid of Nolan and Smith. Nolan for hiring Hostler in the first place he should have known better. He is turning the 49ers into that boring style of football team he coached in Baltimore. Not Niner football. As for Smith I was never really sold on him in the first place coming from WMC an average confrence. The Niners better off getting Marty Schottenheimer as a coach he the best fit. He probably will not want it though?
