What We Learned: Rams @ 49ers
Sun, 16/11/08 – 16:31 | 34 Comments

The 49ers won their third game of the season and first victory for interim head coach Mike Singletary. From the first half it was all 49ers. They ran the ball well, passed the ball well and didn’t have any stupid penalties or turnovers that hurt them.

Now it is official…..so what do we do with all of these picks….I think we should use at least three on the d line. We are SOOOOOO shallow on the depth chart in that category.

  • Clements 22 said:

i say give 3 3rd round picks to the lions so we can get CJ =]

    DRAFT D-FENCE!!!!!

  • R said:

First of all we only have two 3rd rounders this year and only one can be traded. Not only that, but we could not move up into CJ range with 3 3rd’s anyway, even if they were all in the same draft. Dumbass.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

Now, Now temper temper. But, I agree it would take the stars, the sky, and the moon to get to number two in the draft.

Wait a minute didnt we get a third and a fourth for brandon lloyd.

  • R,Craig33 said:

Damn I don’t know who we should pick, we definatly need to fill some offensive spots too, we keep saying alex smith need some more weapons so we need to pick some weapons for him.

The bills traded takeo spikes to the eagles, now I’m not going to hear the end of this shit here in philly, why the fuck did they do that, the eagles won’t just go away do we play them this year because we definatly need to kick their ass after those refs cost us the game, they didn’t even need spikes they have trotter and jones so this is bullshit!

Put the draft on hold, free agencey is still here. Al Wilson is still out there. Get him. You want play makers? Here he is!!!

T.M.M. (too much money) for al wilson and plus they probley want a first round and 3rd or 4th pick.but we wouldnt mind having him for second round pick and a forth round pick.

    lobo,who is quincy black?

  • TheVoiceOfReason said:

Returnofglogyyears - Yes we got a 3rd and 4th for Lloyd. The 3rd was in last years draft, the 4th was for this years.

i hope we can get david clowney wr. from virginia tech in the 4th round, that foo is the shit. probably be a steal in the 4th round

  • Dano said:

No way Al Wilson commands any type of first round pick. Not after failing his physical with the last trade attempted. Maybe give up a third and fifth thats it. Damaged goods no thank you. Not another Jonas Jennings situation I just might crap myself.I’ll pass, draft Patrick Willis FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!! Do it-Do it.

  • noe said:

    DRAFT PATRICK WILLIS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lobo said:

Quicy Black played Lobo back for UNM which would be saftey but in the NFL he would play ILB. Nolan caoched him at the senior bowl and Mike Singeltary really liked the guy had a great showing at the combine, cant remeber what he ran but is a top 20 LB heres his bio

quincy black ran a 4.5 40 and has a 40+ verticle he would be nice in the 4th rd

  • Ryan the 1st said:

I’m sorry, but WE DON’T have ANY depth at D LINE. I AGREE….draft Willis even over Branch because we don’t want someone who sits plays out, but after that we need to get the most talented players available for d line. It is highly unlikely we are going to draft a d lineman in the second, but after that draft them. WE HAVE NO DEPTH AT D LINE. We have BY, Franklin, and Oliver….then WHO? WHO THAT IS QUALITY AND CAN MAKE AN IMPACT? The answer is simple, we don’t have any otherwise we wouldn’t have done so poorly in the sack category this last season. Anyone that says we are fine right now with the players we have to get to the quarterback (front 3) is not paying attention. We need new young talent.

  • tsiimmsniner said:

Lets say it together WILLIS !!! will he stil be there at eleven? especially considering the Cubs trying to trade Briggs to the Skins for there 6 pick in the draft.

  • MoneyMike said:

i think he will be there at 11, no one in front is looking at LB that much to use a top 10 pick

  • MoneyMike said:

i agree i dont want to let a player like willis get by but we do need to address the D-Line and WR. a trade up to get two 2nd rounders with our 3rd and 4th round picks and we could draft a WR and DE.

  • g3spot said:

WILLIS should be our 1st pick…the man plays possesed!!! then we draft a WR in 2nd…D-line after that.

  • Paul said:

Willis should definitely be the Man! Let’s not forgot about replacing Kwame though. If we could trade him and D. Smith, get Willis, then we’d be set. There are some sleeper wideouts out there to get in the later rounds.

  • tsiimmsniner said:

I agree with you Paul. I also would like to add we need to do another 1st round pick if possible if not that a extra 2nd round pick. It would be nice to have a total of 3 2nd round picks. Lets say throw in Kwame !! for example.

  • jerry said:

trade our second round pick a third and forth round pic to new england for there last first round pick.

  • LONE TEXAS 49ER FAN said:

WE NEED JARRETT WERE LOADED ON DEFENSE WE NEED ONE MORE RECEIVER TO COMPLEMENT LELIE. IF WE DO NOT GET JARRETT OR ANOTHER BIG TIME RECEIVER VIA A DRAFT WHATEVER WE WILL NOT BE ABLE COMPETE WITH THE OTHER TOP TEAMS IN THE PALYOFFS. THEY WILL OUTSCORE US, BECAUSE THEIRS TO MANY GOOD RECEIVERS, RECEIVER TRIO’S ON OTHER TEAMS TO OUTSMART THE DEFENSE, AND PLAY TRICKS! WE MAY GET SOME INTERCEPTIONS ETC. THROUGH THE DEFENSE BUT THEY WILL FIND OUT LATE IN THE GAME HOW TO OUTSMART US. WE NEED A BIG TALL REVEIVER TO BE IN THE ENDZONE ALOT! WE NEED A BIG TALLL RECEIVER TO COMPETE WITH THE OTHER BIG TEAMS! LETS SHOW THE WORLD WHO THE BEST TEAM IN FOOTBALL IS! LETS GET BACK TO THE GLORY DAYS!

  • Jake from NY said:

Realistically, what would it take to get down to two? All the elements are there, we’ve got the glaring need, a shit load of picks, and a ready and willing trade partner in Detroit. Mike Ditka traded away the Saints entire draft for one player, Ricky Williams. That was a risk, this is a sure thing. A player like this doesn’t come along everyday. He’s got the best of Owens, Moss, and Harrison all rolled into one. Plus, every NFL fan would be jealous…can you imagine? Alex Smith, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, and Calvin Johnson. I’m hard just thinking about it.

  • jerry said:

or we take our second and third round pick and try to move up to the raiders top second round pick.or we take one of our third round and forth round and trade up to a lower second round pick.

  • Jake from NY said:

I’m in agreement with Tex…we’re not the Ravens, and we never will be. Clements can’t cover everyone. It’s time to get a legitimate Receiving threat. Lelie was cast off by two other teams. There’s probably a reason for it. To go into this season thinking that horse face is the answer is not smart.

  • danny said:

Jarrett is as slow as a turtle. We need another WR, but Jarrett is not the answer! I have watched in live! He is not that good!

LOOK AT OUR SUCESSFUL YEARS- EXAMPLE & COMPARISON- HANKS- LIKE WALT HARRIS OR MIKE SMITH, NATE CLEMENTS - PLAYS LIKE “DEON FREON” TRADER SANDERS! THEIRS A COMPARISON HUH. THEN YOU HAVE THE OFFENSE WE HAVE NO RECEIVER TO COMPARE RICE TO THE LEGEND BUT THATS MY POINT WEE HAVE THE DEFENSE IN PLACE, i DONT REMEMBER A DEFENSIVE LINE OR OFFENSIVE LINE 1ST ROUNDER OR LINEBACKER WIINING US A CHAMPIONSHIP OR GAMES. THE BIG TIME RECEIVERS LIKE WHEN WE HAD T.O. THE TRAITOR, JERRY RICE, J.J. STOKES, TAYLOR, CLARK ETC. WON US THE GAMES. ON DEFENSE THE CORNERS AND SAFETYS WON US THE GAME, NOT SOME LINEBACKER OR DEFENSIVE LINEMAN OR TACKLE. GET THE THOSE DEFENSIVE LINEMAN ANDS LINEBACKERS LATE IN THE DRAFT. THE PROOF IS IN THE POODING. LOOK THE PAST AND WE OWE OUR SUCCESS TO OUR RECEIVERS AND OUR CORNERS AND SAFETYS. THE OTHER PALYERS WERE A FACTOR, BUT THE POSITIONS WERE CRUCIAL OF THOSE WINS! DRAFT A RECEIVER IN FIRST ROUND AND DEFENSE IN LATER ROUNDS THAT WHAT WE NEED!

  • eddie said:

we trade our second round pick, third round pick and forth round pick and trade it for someones first round pick.then you take the two first round picks and a second round pick of next year and trade it to raiders for there first round pick and get calvin johnson.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

GIVE UP!!!! WE aren’t drafting Jarrett….unless we trade with the Patriots. Jarrett isn’t talented enough to be taken with the 11th pick. I would rather have Bowe than Jarret because at least Bowe can put the burners on. Mike Williams….oh excuse me, Dwayne Jarrett isn’t showing me that he is going to dominate or be able to do much after the catch. He had ONE good game against a defense that was worth a damn (Michigan) and that is it. He ISN’T THAT GOOD. I with the people who say DRAFT A WR IN THE SECOND….WILLIS IN THE FIRST.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

Yes, he manhandled Leon Hall, but so did every other GOOD receiver at the collegiate level. Leon Hall only shut down wideouts that were the best on mediocre teams. Ginn and Jarrett ate him alive so that isn’t saying much about Hall either.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

Like it or not we are going to be drafting for starters AND depth. Nolan just doesn’t strike me as a guy that is going to trade away all of his picks for 2-3 really good picks. That is just what I think, however. We have eight picks in the first four rounds….that NEVER happens. This is too deep of a draft to not take advantage of it. I would LOVE to have Calvin Johnson on our team, but he is going to cost us ALL of our picks to get him and that would be extremely dumb to do with a draft class this deep.

  • MikeWilliams said:

Hey Douche Bags. We are taking Jarrett unless he really blows on pro day. We need receivers! We have Lelie for the deep threat. Like him or not, he is our deep threat guy, thats why we signed him. Why everyone says Jarrett is slow baffles me. They said the same about a guy named Jerry Rice. We need a posession receiver guy that can work the middle with VD. Battle is not that guy. Landry will be gone. Branch has no work ethic, not Nolan-esque. Take receiver first and defense second. The draft is loaded with D. Most of the top flight receivers will be gone by the second round when we pick.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

Mike if you REALLY think that Nolan is going to take Jarrett over Willis (if he is available) then you aren’t paying attention. The only way we are going to take a guy that in most mock drafts is being picked in the twenties is if we pull the Manny Lawson, which is possible. But, with the 11th pick I don’t see it happening. This draft is SO DEEP at receiver that we don’t NEED to pick one with our first pick A)because there is better talent available B)because we could pick up a receiver in the second round for sullivan to mold C)willis ran a 4.37, you don’t pass that kind of talent up. D)Jarrett has yet to prove that he can even run faster than a 4.6.

  • MikeWilliams said:

We shall see. Either way I would be happy, but I see Nolan looking to help Alex this year with a WR with the first pick and defense the rest of the way. Still a long way to the draft, a lot could happen. Douche bag.

  • mario said:

landry, branch, willis, ginn jr., anderson. in that order. gaines adams is out of the question cuz he’ll be long gone. the road back to the superbowl looks like its just over the horizon. within 2 seasons we get a ring for the other hand. wouldnt it be funny if we met cincy and threepeated on their ass hahaha. or san diego again. dream scenario would be: knocking out green bay in the first game, knocking off dalas in the championship game and killing the raiders in the superbowl. but come on, raiders and superbowl shouldnt be uttered in the same sentence for decades to come. go niners!!!

  • Ryan the 1st said:

West, I love it how you ALWAYS make sense. Jarrett I could live with, but….I would rather have Bowe or Meechum as well. However, if we want to do that then we need to pull the Manny Lawson and get back into the twenties because I believe that the receivers are going to start getting plucked at number twenty or twenty one. You KNOW the Chiefs are going to take a receiver and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dallas get one as well even though they already seem pretty set at that position. Even if Jarrett runs under a 4.5 I still would rather have Bowe or Meechum for the purpose of toughness and they didn’t come from a program that makes them think that they are GOD’s gift to the sport of football.

I think that the niners should go with Patrick Willis with 1st Pick

As for Wide Receiver I Say we get Steve Smith out of USC in the 2nd round that guy is better then Dwayne Jerrett or at least trade down to a postion to snatch Robert Meecham like Ryan said

  • mdg said:

take jarret he is the best playmaker besides johnson ive seen him play alot he is a big factor of the trojan sucess him and steve smith take jarret its a smart choice hge is 6′5 with amazing hands and play making ability so what if he isnt fast gore isnt fast its not about speed its abvout waiting for an opening he is the best player availible at the time take him he will be a number one right off the bat and then hit up the o-line and d-line and linebacker postions in thje later rounds but jarret in the first

  • Arock49 said:

Jarret?????? I will shit on myself in pure disgust if the Niners waste their pick on the slowest reciever in the draft and he’s a punk too. We need a LineBacker!!!!

    PATRICK WILLIS!!!!!!!!!

  • Wingkong said:

Meachem (sp?) or Willis will be drafted at #11. Why keep throwing Kwame in trades? If he were that good, we would keep him.

  • Ryan the 1st said:

I don’t think Meechum will be drafted that I high. I would hope that we wouldn’t be that stupid to take him at 11. Willis is what we need. If we take Jarrett with a Manny Lawson type pick then I am fine with it (however, I would rather we got another receiver besides Jarrett). With the 11th pick we need defense. Drafting Jarrett with that pick would feed his “I’m from USC, so I deserve an outrageous amount of money” ego. He ISN’T WORTH IT!!! LET HIM GO!!!

  • Ryan the 1st said:

Take Steve Smith in the second because he at least can put the burners on and has hands that are just as good as Jarrett’s. The only difference between them is Steve Smith is way faster and Jarrett is 3 inches taller.

The San Francisco 49ers appreciate a good thing when they see it. That good thing is their young Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Niners have agreed to terms on a new five-year deal with their starting running back. Terms of the deal were not available, but the Niners didn’t have to lock up the youngster, as he still had time left on his rookie deal.
Now entering his third year, Gore rushed for an impressive 1,695 yards with eight touchdowns with 5.4 yards per carry last season. He overcame fumble problems earlier in the year to rebound with consistency. He’s also become a favorite of head coach Mike Nolan.

In addition to his rushing totals, he added 61 receptions in 2006.

NOW…..we have officially had the best offseason we have EVER HAD. You guys can argue it ALL YOU WANT, but the facts are that we have never revamped our team to this degree ever in the history of the franchise. I know bringing in Joe and Rice were big, but we have addressed SO MANY HOLES ON OUR TEAM that it isn’t even funny and we haven’t even had the draft yet. Let’s make some moves and move up some spots because if we can find gems like Melvin Oliver in the later rounds then just think what we can do with the picks we have this year.

We don’t have depth….BY is going to be used sparingly, Oliver is solid, and Franklin is a GREAT BACKUP NOSE TACKLE. Soap isn’t going to cut it….sorry, but thus far he hasn’t been doing the job. Douglas is alright.

I know I was screaming for Micheal Bush because of that Snake Oil Salesman of an agent? I still am. He stock is falling off a bit due to the surgery. I say pick him up let him heal and punish the NFC FUCKING WEST. Just a bit of insurance in just in case we lose Hicks. Bush looks like a late third round pick as of now, just like Gore.

Hell even I would love for Micheal Robinson to pan out because he seems like a stand up guy, but the combo of both Bush and Gore. WOW!!!! If Micheal Pans out great then Bush will be healthy and we can be in the same position as San Diego with L.T & M. Turner maybe turn into first & third round picks- it would be money in the bank. Frank Gore-RB-49ers Mar. 27 - 10:32 pm et

49ers signed Frank Gore to a four-year contract extension through 2011. The deal includes a $6.5 million signing bonus, $14 million in guarantees, and a total value of $28 million.
Satan works his magic again. Considering Gore has a history of injuries and wasn’t a restricted free agent until next offseason, he did well to earn $18.212 million in the first three years of the deal and $14 million in guarantees. The structure of the deal is a rare one that actually makes it possible to be completed if Gore stays productive throughout. Gore will be well worth it if he just keeps up his pace from 2006.

D1800 is a genius! GOOD JOB BUDDY! Thanks………… FUCK YOU DANO! The only ‘piece’ Pat willis ever wore was your dads ass. HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!………………. MARIO, Mike Bush is fucking TRAIN! He’d be a great addition. But with one good leg right now i don’t see anyone taking him untill the later rounds. We once took a DE out of one of the Florida schools (at the end of the draft), and he had to have knee surgery. He couldn’t even play well for a couple of years. The ‘Niners new this, but they took a chance on him anyway. His name was Kevin Fagan, and he not only became our starting DE, but he was a stud, and a terror. He sacked a ton of QB’s. I’d love to see us with Bush! Someone will take a chance on him. I hope it us.

we need another safety…mark roman is a hole in our secondary

merriwether in the second would be an absolute steal…yea he fought in the big brawl, but what would you have done in his position….stood back and watched your teammates fight another team, if you did that then ur a pussy…he was also the only player to write an apology to FIU…merriwether is a competitor, and hes got that miami swagger…like this one guy, u might have heard of him….ed reed

David Harris is going to be better than patrick willis in a 3-4, willis runs fast behind his blockers, but in a 3-4 linebackers have to be able to engage lineman and get off blocks, Harris is a beast and is strong enough to do that, Michigan uses the 3-4 mixed in with the 4-3

Alan Branch does not take plays off, whoever says that is plain wrong, he was the best player on a great michigan team last year, and was able to singlehandedly take over games ie. Penn State….Branch is a terrific talent, and fills a glaring need…if he falls to 11 and its him or willis…i guarantee branch is taken

Dwane Jarret is a playmaker, he isn’t that slow either, hes competitive and hes tough, he catches everything, wins jump balls, and breaks tackles… i would be very happy to get him, but not at 11, maybe if we traded up into the 20’s

  • imsmarterthanyou said:

quit jumpin on patrick willi’s cock cuz he ran a 4.37 he will not be an all star inside linbacker in a 3-4

  • imsmarterthanyou said:

dwane jarrets game speed isn’t that slow…his 40 is not so good

    ye for a 300 pound fat man…

dwayne jarret outran leon hall to the endzone…leon hall ran a 4.37??? gamespeed is wat matters, jerry rice didn’t have a great 40….not that im comparing the two, but wow that would be sweet if we got jarret in the second round and he ended up that good

The 49ers have lesser draft needs than they did at the outset of free agency, given that they’ve gone on a spending spree that featured the addition of cornerback Nate Clements and various other new players.

But, then again, we’re talking about the 49ers. So there is still ample room for improvement.

Receiver remains a significant area of need, given the departure of Antonio Bryant. They’ve added Ashley Lelie, but they need to do a lot more to conjure memories of days gone by in the Bay Area.

There are plenty of high-caliber pass catchers in this year’s crop, and the Niners should have their pick of any of them other than Calvin Johnson.

But the real needs are on defense, where the 49ers are likely to spend their first-round pick. Linebacker Patrick Willis could be a candidate, if he is still on the board. But he likely won’t be after running the 40 in under 4.4 seconds. Twice. Another possibility would be to nab David Harris in round two.

The team needs a solid nose tackle in order to justify a switch to the 3-4. Several are available in this year’s big, fat crop of crap factories.

Defensive end is also an area of need, given that mainstay Bryant Young is 43. Or something.

With Michael Lewis signed to play safety, the needs at the position are somewhat diminished. Still, they could use a young guy to beef up the defensive backfield, and it would be wise to use a first-day pick at this position.

Back on the offensive side of the ball, the Niners could use some youthful insurance at tackle in the event that doubts about the long-term value of Jonas Jennings are accurate.

In all, the 49ers generally seem to be on the right track. If the 2007 draft were to yield a couple of instant starters, the team could get even closer to a playoff berth than it did a year ago.
