After the news broke of the reduced salary, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee noted that word around the combine is the 49ers are more optimistic that the team can re-sign free agent safety Donte Whitner. With the projected increase of the NFL Salary Cap, the 49ers feel they have more room to work with on keeping the free agent saftey in San Francisco.
