The 49ers traveled to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs led by former 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. Smith who played the entire first half didn’t fair so well against his former team. He finished the day 7 of 16 for 62 yards and was sacked three times. The 49ers defense gave the Chiefs nothing, they were getting pressure and making good defensive plays. The standouts on defense were CB Perrish Cox and DE Corey Lemonier. The special teams and backup offense were a different story.
Outside of a nice 50 yard run by Gore to start the game, the offense never got the ball rolling until rookie BJ Daniels got into the game. Late in the 4th quarter Daniels led the 49ers on what would be the game winning drive. On that drive Daniels was 6-for-7 for 72 yards and connected with WR Chuck Jacobs for a 14 yard touchdown pass. With that drive Daniels ends up at the worst the No. 3 quarterback, but will certainly battle Tolzien and McCoy for the No. 2 job.
Tolzien and McCoy never quite got it going, Tolzien finished 3 of 8 for 30 yards and McCoy finished 3 of 6 for 35 yards and one interception. The 49ers look set with their first team, but the last two games of the preseason the second/third teams need to step it up.
The special teams gave up a 104 yard kickoff return and Phil Dawson was 3-3 on field goals with a long of 55.
