Adam Schefter is reporting that the 49ers will use the franchise tag on safety Dashon Goldson. The franchise tag for a safety is $6.2 million.
Prior to last season Goldson was looking for a big payday. The 49ers offered him a 5 year deal worth $25 million, which he turned down to test the free agent market. Goldson got very little interest from teams around the league and came back and signed a one year deal with the 49ers.
That one year deal turned out to be huge for Goldson. He had his best season finishing with 67 tackles, 1 forced fumbled and 6 interceptions. The 49ers will work to sign Goldson to a long term deal, but at this time Goldson is agentless as he did not re-sign with Drew Rosenhaus after the season.
If no long term deal is reached, the 49ers have Goldson’s service for at least one more year.
