On Saturday the 49ers made a surprising move in releasing 3rd string vet QB Josh McCown. Not many thought Harbaugh was going to let McCown go, but after he was it was obvious Harbaugh had his eyes on someone else. That someone else was recently released Chargers QB Scott Tolzien.
Reports are the 49ers made a strong push for Tolzien after the lockout ended, but he chose the Chargers instead and now he has a shot with the 49ers.
The 49ers saw first hand how Tolzien looked when they took them on Thursday night. The undrafted rookie from Wisconsin completed 16 of 23 passes for 226 yards with one touchdown and one interception against the 49ers.
Tolzien will most likely be the No. 3 QB coming in, but he will push Kaepernick hard for that No. 2 spot.
