Its time for the 49ers to put up or shut up. Their dim playoff hopes are still alive in the weak NFC West but it will take winning at least 3 out of the next 4 and some luck to make it happen. The 49ers need to beat Seattle, St.Louis and Arizona and would at least have the best record within the division. Barring a miracle against San Diego however, they would likely end up 7-9 overall and need both the Rams and Seahawks to only win 1 of their remaining 4 games. The 49ers on paper do have the easiest schedule of the three teams, but as we have seen with the preseason predictions and rankings, paper doesn’t mean much in the NFL (unless its green).
Whether or not everything falls into place the next few weeks, one thing is certain, Mike Singletary’s coaching clock is ticking away. With Singletary naming Alex Smith the starter this week, and barring injury for the rest of the season, it seems fitting those two will go out together. Singletary’s dead weight was already being pulled off Golden Gate bridge , now he has grabbed Alex Smith to drop into NFL abyss with him. They will definitely go out together in a blaze, whether it’s a blaze of glory or not we will soon find out. Assuming the 49ers miss the playoffs and Alex Smith plays the way he has all season we can expect a lot of changes in the offseason. What is on your Christmas wish list for the 49ers?
