49ers Win in London

The 49ers win in London. No that is not a typo. The game started off as a snoozefest, but right around late in the 3rd quarter the game started getting interesting.

The 49ers came out running like they normally do and struggled against a Broncos rush D that is ranked in the bottom of the league. Frank Gore had a couple nice runs, but outside of that the same run up the middle garbage that we have all grown accustomed to.

The defense bent but did not break, Kyle Orton got his yards but came up with some solid stops when they needed to.

Now onto Troy Smith, Smith came in and didn’t look any better than the other QB’s they have put out there, but late in the game it seemed that he woke up and found his groove. It didn’t hurt that the 49ers needed a score to tie, which finally opened up the playbook and gave Smith a chance to show what he can do with the play in the air.

Not sold on Troy Smith yet, would like to see more out of him. He certainly isn’t the long term answer, but you have to at least see enough of him to see if he can stick around next year.

The Pundit of 49ersNews. I do what I can to supply the Niner fans with their fix.

    Agree 100%.

Troy looked about as good as the other Smith guy did vs the Raiders – decent – not great not turn overs – limited by the playcalling.

Gore's ability to run vs a weak Denver D was key. They sustained drives and ate clock.

Denver's special teams get an assist. Their poor punting set up the drive that led to the Crabs TD. Orton's fumble pretty much sealed it even before his pick.

Note to Clements – Did you see what Spencer did when he had the game winning INT? He went to down and stayed down. Try it.

The D was good – finally. Like Pundit said – bent but never broke. Huge day for Brandon Lloyd though. We let him go why??

Happy for the win – but I doubt it would have been enough to beat anyone but Denver – thankfully they had no pass rush.

TROY SMITH TROY SMITH !!!!! its a great feeling too win

  • wickerman

Peopel will point to Gore's carries as a reason for the win – perhaps rightly so. I think there is another way to ook at it though…

    Troy Smith's attempts – 19.

To this point, the 9ers have thrown FAR more than that..

Through 7 games (61/2 really) Alex threw 45/32/42/32/39/33/19(hurt) times.

I would say Alex Smith was throwing so much because nothing else was working (and often throwing was making it any better). The team obviously is built to run – the coaches do not have a grasp on the throwing game. It is also strange to think that Alex best completion % (the saints game) came on a 32 attempt game (his lowest output other than the Panthers 1/2 game).

I think the point is the Niners pass when they are desperate – and against the defenses they have played to this point, they have certainly been desperate.

Staying calm and not getting behind vs Denver enabled them to control the tempo and limit their QB to 19 pass attempts. This looks good, but it makes you wonder what happens when they find themselves behind again.

If the o-line plays like it did today – no problem. Either Smith can do well when they have time. But if today's o-line dominance was a result of playing the Broncos not a progression of the o-line, I don;t see Troy Smith having any more time than Alex did.

Hopefully – regardless of who starts vs the Rams in 2 weeks – we see the o-line pass and run block like they did today and allow us to have a 20 or so attempt day for our QB.

the solution today was QBQB. I've been telling you guys on here thats the solution all along and it worked. I had a good feeling about Troy and it was correct. Troy, was a underdog hidden gem and I feel like he will get better as the games roll by. This was the solution alex smith lovers, because Alex Smith is inconsistant and not a true starter, only a backup. Troy'/s not the best out there, but he's been better than what weve had besides our boy Shaun hill who we should of never got rid of. I hope Troy keeps this up. If Alex was in there lover's, the ball would of been bounced everywhere and there would of been multiple turnovers. This was a decisive when against a good team down on its luck like us. QB is the solution and I was right, we have all the tools but that until now.

    • caribulou

You have got to be kidding me. He sucked. We got lucky at the end of the game. The caching is the first I have see they only open it up when behind. We only won because the broncos suck more then we do. No qb will excellent in this scene. Alex should have changed teams and shown what he can do for a team with a coach that knows how to call a game.

      • LoneTexas49erfan

Caribou go back to the Cowbilly site, I am tired of you imposters wanting the worst for this team. Alex is horrible, Troy just started with the 1st team a week ago and he played bettter than Alex has in 6 years since playing with us. Give Troy a little time he will play even better, this guy is an unproven and he has that burning desire to win and prove himself. I'm not saying he's the next Joe montana, I'm just saying I saw potential in there yesterday in his scrambling, patience, poise and smart plays in such a short time frame. Alex does not show those chararistics, he acts like a nervous dude out there. It wasnt a high scoring game, but its better than turning the ball over. Troy didnt just heave the ball anywhere having it up for grabs, he was smart and patient and waited for the right moment. He buried himself in the play book and it shows. It wasnt an exciting win, but it was a win with no turnovers!

If you all don’t realize that a QB is the leader of the offense. Without leadership at that position the offense will not function. Mike Nolan drove this team in the ground for three seasons, you all are expecting Mike Sing to pull us out the hole in two seasons. Be realistic!

  • DeeKon52

Kyle Orton is a Pussy. Did yall see him cower and curl up like a baby one play when he felt pressure. Then he dove and missed a key first down because he didn't wanna get hit.

  • ninerfaithful

still loven the win, Frank Gore needs to be paid more perhaps a long term deal in the off season to lock him as a niner for ever…. Alex Smith will be the guy again when he is healthy but troy smith has some things about him that make you think twice ….. go niners 10-6 would be a dream 9-7 would be wonderful anything else would be a disappointment

  • wickerman

Looking at the last 8 games the 9ers have (not in order)

    Rams x2
    Cards x2
    Hawks
    Packers
    Chargers
    Tampa

IF – BIG IF – They win out vs the division, they will be 7-6. That means they needs to win 2 of 3 vs GB, SD and TB to go 9-7.

Any other combo at this point likely puts another divisional team in a better place – they all have better records today and the Niners need all the tie-breakers they can get against them.

Basically, the Niners are done of they lose to a divisional opponent without a huge bit of help from the rest of our division rivals' opponents. If they lose 2 games to Div opponents, they probably can't even get in WITH help.

Tough spot to be in, but thanks to Manny Lawson, Frank Gore and Denver's Special teams and O-line, we at least have a mathematical chance. Hopefully Vernon Davis is good to go, the team gets some good practices in for the next 2 weeks and they come out hot vs SL.
The Packers and Tampa are hard to call – they look very good some weeks and iffy at other times. I think SD flat out sucks – but then the Panthers do to and the 9ers fell apart vs them.

I have to say that I think that Troy Smith did a really nice job yesterday and earned the shot to play other game. Now the question that still needs to be answered is this. Was it Troy Smith that looked that good or was it the fact that Denver really sucks that bad? This is a tough question to answer.

  • Chris

Here are some reasons why I think that Troy did a great job…..
#1: He is mobile in the pocket. He really made some nice plays making people miss and then getting the throw off. I think that on a few occassions that Alex Smith would have been sacked or tried to force the ball into something bad.
#2: The kid was clam. Not once did you see him get all stressed out like you see Alex do all the time. Clam head goes a long way in the NFL.
#3: Doesn't run away when in the gun. He took the snap set his feet and made very accurate throws. Alex takes the snap, then takes another 3 step drop putting himself right where the OTs push the rush. If he stays in the pocket that is set maybe he can step up more.

Your hat is on too tight. Loosen it up and learn. HE PLAYED A 2 and 5 team. He had one good quarter. Get a freaking clue. One quarter does not make a starter. There is a reason he was third string.

      • LoneTexas49erfan

And also he PLAYED his first game as starter and PRACTICED with the !st stringers only as of last week in london, thats pretty good him picking that up so quickly, good learnign curve. Imagine if he's not a fluke and he actually play consistant and improves, imagine him getting more reps with the guys, he'll grow alot. I'm not a Troy lover yet until I se consistancy, but he has shown more leadership in one game and more athletic ability and poise than Alex Smith did in 6 years. Lovers keep alex as a backup if you love him so bad, ADAM and caribou. The Alex experiment has failed and this was his final season to prove himself and he failed. Sing will do whats best for his job and his team. Maybe the cowbillies will pick Alex up, will that excite you ADam and caribou and other lovers! And by the way, I hate Texas, just work here, but I hate it down here in hilbilly land! If you come here go to Austin San Antonio and El Paso, Avoid Dallas and HOUSTON especially! I live in Austin which is more like San Fran, laid back!

      • LoneTexas49erfan

And I dont listen to country, dont drive a jacked up truck with a Camo-ball cap and big star on back. , Theres alot of that down here unfortuanatly, that and Metro's but thats not me. I'm a surfer with a SF sticker on my car, not an east texas cowboy or a rich metro driving a 300 lexus, those are everywhere here. San Frans laid back, but not here, people are majorly uptight! If it wasnt for my job, I'd be in back in the west coast were I belong. I loved to see the fans down here when the Giants wiped the rangers butts, it was like the 49ers beating the cowbillies, because the Rangers are basically in the same city, they mine as well be called the Dallas rangers. The fans in general are ego maniacs with sports and everyday life and it was good to see us represent, they werent expecting us to win so it was awesome!!!!!

      • LoneTexas49erfan

I agree the Broncos sucked, but they were better than us with Alex Smith in charge, trust me. Alex would of tunred the ball over sunday, he sets the tone for the whole team. We dont need that, we need a leader much like Young and Montanan were to this team, they were cool and calm, and troy showed that sunday. Give him a break, its his first game, if he's consistant he'll only get better. the real test is against a winning team yes, but I feel like the Broncos were playing for there season just like us, and in my opinion I would rather play a winning team instead of a team who's desperate because the losing team will play there heart out and the adrenaline will come out and the ywill play better than usual. I I think Troy will represent and fire up this team, but we will see for sure how good he is in the coming games, hopefully he's for real!

  • Adam

Tryo Smith played very average. His accuracy is below average. Alex Smith will be our starting QB against the Rams and deservingly so.

    • ninerfaithful

WHY IS IT THAT YOU HATE TROY SMITH ?

YOU CALLED HIM GARBAGE HIS ACCURACY IS BELOW ADVERAGE IM CONFUSED

      EXPLAIN

  • DeeKon52

    P.S.

Giants!, Lakers!, 49ers? Lets do it

  • DeeKon52

    HERE IT IS…i think.

The reason no one on this board is giving T Smith a chance is because they saw the youtube video where that ESPN reporter said he sucked and they are influential. FUCK THEM. He actually does have very good leadership and mobility. So basically..I don’t know who to start if all our QB’s are healthy.

P.S. To whoever writes articles for this site.

…..You are not writing enough…I want more articles and so do others I would think.

    • caribulou

I am giving him a chance but all the bandwaggoners need to pull their heads out of their butts. We saw him play ONE game. For 3 quarters of that game he was a hoover vacuum. He also played against a crappy team. There is a reason he was dropped from the Ravens. Now if he plays in other games and shows he doesnt suck I will get on the band waggon but after just one game come on and get real.
