49ers Auditions Being Held – Show Up at BCS Championship if Interested.
I am looking forward to this evening’s championship game (5:15 p.m. ABC) between No. 2 Texas and No. 1 Alabama. There I have used many big college games, most including the Texas Longhorns to make my wish list of 49ers draftees, most recently, including Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Alabama inside linebacker Rolando McClain. The game will feature two strong members of the Special Teams Units in Javier Arenas and Jordan Shipley. Of the many strong talented members of the teams that play tonight, here are the top 5 from each team that I think we REALLY ought to go after this year.
Texas
DT Lamarr Houston, 6-2, 300. No. 33. With his strength, he can help run the line. Smaller guy, but great potential
LB/DE Sergio Kindle, 6-4, 255. No. 2. While he is a proven playmaker, I believe that as he matures he will be a huge addition. Is ability to get off the line of scrimmage means that he should be able to hold off any real defense threat.
QB Colt McCoy, 6-2, 210, No. 12. McCoy, when he is not in panic mode, is very Steve Young-esque. His ability to roam around when getting flushed out of the pocket make him a threat to short and medium yard pass defenses. Even though he does not have a Farve-ian arm, his completion percentages in those short to middle distance plays keeps him a contender. His size alone is what may make him fall out of the first round. (However, let’s not forget what he was able to get done when he had to bulk up for Texas.)
WR Jordan Shipley, 6-0, 190, No. 8. I think that Jordan Shipley, while a great WR for the Longhorns, will be better suited as a Tight End. He has the toughness necessary to be willing to take the hard hits that will come with that middle of the field position. Because he is not one of the fastest runners out there, I believe that he will be beaten out for WR positions by some of the oldier, rangier fellows.
Alabama
CB Javier Arenas, 5-9, 195. No. 28. There is so much talent in this year’s draft that the 49ers will be able to pick someone strong in the later rounds. My bet, which aligns with a lot of the rumblings I have been hearing lately is that we will try to pick up a kick returner in free agency. If not, there will be no shortage of talent
NG Terrence Cody, 6-5, 354. No 62. The size of this guy will make him a bull on the line. He can stand his ground, but he does have opportunities as far as being able to move laterally quickly to snuff out any openings. A team such as my 49ers could use his defensive skills on the line to shut down the likes of Suh. I would be surprised if he is picked in the first round as well, but stranger things have happened.
LB Rolando McClain, 6-4, 258. No. 25. This guy is a true athlete. He looked good in the SEC Championship game against Florida. While much of his ability can be credited to Cody holding the line for him, McClain on his own should be one of the first Linebackers to be selected.
Tonight’s game will offer either a plethora of offense, with a huge, lopsided victory for the Longhorns, or it will be a tight, defense laden affair, with a close, low score that will allow Alabama to squeak by. Either way, I can’t wait to see the best of the best out there putting on their auditions for my 49ers.
