Gameday Preview: 49ers @ Cardinals

Comes down to Frank and Beans

Comes down to Frank and Beans

For the fourth consecutive season the 49ers face off against their division rival Arizona Cardinals. The 49ers are coming off a 7-9 season with a strong showing at the end of the season under new head coach Mike Singletary, while the Cardinals are coming off their first Super Bowl experience. The 49ers travel to Arizona and the gameplan calls for Singletary’s smash mouth style football, under the play calling of new OC Jimmy Raye, who has said that the 49ers expect to run the ball 60% of the time. The 49ers didn’t mix it up that much during the preseason so we’ll finally get to see what Raye’s offense with the tandem of Gore and Coffee can do for a full game.

When the 49ers have the ball:
It has already been established that the 49ers will run, run, run, and may mix in a pass here and there. The 49ers want to get the ground game going and hopefully keep their defense off the field. Shaun Hill gets the nod at quarterback and Niner fans better hope that run game gets going. If not and they have to play catch up and rely on the arm of Hill, it will not be…I’ll be nice and not bash Hill. Let’s hope he throws better during the regular season then he did during the preseason.

When the Cardinals have the ball:
It’s pretty obvious the Cardinals will rely on the arm of Kurt Warner and he’ll look for his favorite target in Larry Fitzgerald. The 49ers have to put pressure on Warner. If not and they give him all day to throw, it will be a long day. The status of Fitz’ counterpart Anquan Boldin is still up in the air. He’ll most likely play as he isn’t one you can keep out of games. The Cardinals run game isn’t a threat, but the arm of Warner and play of Fitz/Boldin are.

Key Matchups:
49ers offensive line vs Cards front seven – If the O-line opens holes for Gore and Coffee they will run all over them and wear them down.
Larry Fitzgerald vs Nate Clements – Clements didn’t have the best preseason, but the past games against the Cards he has kept Fitz in check. He’ll have his hands full this week if the 49ers lack a pass rush.

Final Word:
It all comes down to the run game and the pass rush, if the 49ers offensive line doesn’t dominate and the defense doesn’t pressure Warner the 49ers will be in for a long day.

Prediction:
49ers 19 – Cardinals 17

Born and raised a diehard Niner fan. I have nothing better to do with my time than sit here and cram my opinions down everyone's throat.
  • willQWishful Thinkin

Wishful thinking unfortunately… Cardnials 31, 49ers 16. I hate the Cardinals for the opener, whether they're good or bad.

  • A True Niner Fan

were gunna kick the cardinals ass!!! I cant wait for this sunday to get some payback for the last game where we came up a yard short an left a bitter taste this whole off-season. Our D is gunna be very good and I think we might actually pass a little more than everyone is thinking to catch Arizon off guard But also want to see the O line punish the cardinals defenders on the run as well, Its Go Time!

  • Adam

I personally don't believe we stack up good against the Cards for 2 reasons. With sing wanting to run the ball so much, and the Cards a pass happy combined with the poor play of Nate Clements, if we get behind we wont have the ability to score points quickly enough to win the game.

  • Adam

Also I don't believe our defense is good enough to run the ball all game and win. I think our defense is gonna give up points to generously for us to use our strength(which is frank gore) to win games consistantly.

Does anyone know of a good place to watch the games online? I can't seem to find any video feeds other than NFL.com which costs money. I can listen for free with 107 FM online, but I'd rather watch a stream (even if its crappy). Just curious. There was that Dallas game that was broadcast, but I don't know if it was a one time deal.

Dosia, try turning caps off before you type. Its bloody annoying.

      NA! ID RATHER NOT!

  • wickerman

Gotta agree with unknown stuntman. The 9ers need to control the tempo and play ball-control. If they fall behind, they really don't have the kind of offense that can thrown down-field to make a big comeback.

I think Boldin will be less than 100% even if he does play. If so, assuming the 9ers can pressure Warner, I like the match up for our D.

I say Niners win it 17-14.

Cards cant stop our run game! Our O-Line will dominate to say the least and we will run the ball effectively. You can guarantee Gore will pass the ‘century mark’ and Hill should manage the game well. Our D will hold the pigeons under 20pts! Final Score: SF 23 ARZ 16

  • dosia510

IM GLAD TO SEE SING HUMBLED THE FUCK OUT OF V. DAVIS. MAKIN HIM CAPTAIN IS A SMART MOVE TO MENTALLY MOTIVATE HIM TO PRODUCE ON THE FIELD AS A FORCE TO SET AN EXAMPLE. I KNOW WE CANT SHUT DOWN THE CARDS AERIAL ATTACK BUT AS LONG AS WE CONTAIN IT, WE WILL BE FINE. THEIR RUN GAME ISNT ALL THAT GREAT AND WE HAVE GOOD RUN D. SMASHMOUTH YALL ITS TIME TO STOP TALKIN IT N JUST DO IT LIKE NIKE.

  • http://Q Bobby Boucher

Is it just me or is Nate Clements always stoned out of his fucking mind? Just got finished watching some videos on 49ers.com and Nate's eyes look like two piss holes in a snowbank. Niners are going to knock out the Cards tomorrow. My prediction 28-13. I'm so amped for the game! Can't wait for tomorrow!

  • Eleven11

Our secondary isn’t good enough to beat these guys, considering how tired they’re gonna be with our lack of pass rushing. If the Cardinals rush defense isn’t spectacular, we might have a chance at winning, but it doesn’t look good.

    Final score: Cardinals- 24 49ers- 20

  • dosia510

i dont understand how so many pescimistic niner fans there are out there. those turd-nals are the same team they were last year without their OC. we have another year of manusky’s D under the belt n we still were in a very good position to beat them last year. the only upside they have on us is the confidence factor cuz they played in the super bowl. but we are gonna play spoiler to the turd-nals!!!! this OUR division, OUR year, and OURS for the taking!

  • dosia510

does any one know when the deadline is for crabgreed to sign b4 he loses his first weeks check?

  • A True Niner Fan

Great Win! I knew they could do it! Ive been saying Shaun Hill is the man since forever and just wins! even with Frank Gore Shut down he walked the field an Won the Game….Defense is for real and gunna be a Force! all the Haterz are eating there words now, NFC Champs just got Beat Down by the New soon to be Division Champs! Go Niners!

    • Niner Pundit

Were you watching the same game I was. Outside of that one drive Hill was garbage and he got a lot of lucky breaks on that drive. Throwing into 2-3 man coverage. He’s lucky he didn’t throw a pick. Hill is not the answer.

      • A True Niner Fan

hahaha I knew you would hate that Shaun Hill won this game…like I said the Haterz cant say nuthin….wernt you the same guy lobbying for Nate Davis and then he played like absolute crap in the preseason finale against San Diego….Hill Just Wins..Bottom Line and theres no lucky breaks in this league you either do or you dont …and we Did!

        • Niner Pundit

I don’t hate that Hill won this game, good for him. I just hate the fact that people think Hill is a real QB. He can’t throw for shit and he showed it today.

          • A True Niner Fan

ill admit he had a few that were pretty bad but none were picked off (warner cant say that)and he did have some really good throws, that one morgan dropped in the enzone in the begining was perfectly thrown and Vernon dropped that nice one over the middle when he got lit up…and what about that long one to Issac Bruce that was amazing!….that last drive was prescision and if it hadnt been for some predictable playcallin from Jimmy Raye in the first half, the offense would have been alot better

  • Josh

Go ahead and add the 49ers o line to the bitches column. Willis is still a beast.

  • DcNinerFan

I almost regret watching this game. It was a great first half. Then they decided it wasn’t worth playing. Go figure.

  • DcNinerFan

Detroit has more yards than we do. Its ugly for sure.

  • DcNinerFan

anyone know why they pulled Spencer off fitzgerald? Clemments has been horrible against him.

  • wickerman

Good game. Defense looked excellent. The pressure was there – Haralson and Lawson did their parts and Justin Smith came up big in the last few drives.

The secondary did a good job vs a great group of WRs – props there.

Hill had a good game. The 50 yarder to Bruce was sweet. He looked lost in the 1st half a few times but settled in. There were a few throws that were just dumb, but nobody ever said he was Peyton Manning. Managed the game well.

The running game was horrible. The Cards defense looked like the Steelers vs Gore out there. Something needs to be done.

NOT happy with some of the play calling. I know a safety would have been a disaster, but 3 runs and a punt from inside our own 3? Stupid.

all in all very good game. Hope the 9ers keep it up.

  • DcNinerFan

Ok, so, I take it back. They still played crap O, but just enough when it counted. Lucky all those penalties, yeah? The cardinals were sloppy.
