This might be disheartening to fantasy football fans like myself, especially those who plan on drafting Gore, also like I do but I think the 49ers should mix it up in the backfield this season. Of course Gore should get the bulk of the carries, I’m talking 70% or more, but why not put Glen Coffee out there as much as needed?
I would suggest this for several reasons, the most important one being to give Gore a breather, as Gore goes the 49ers offense goes, but also to keep the defenses honest. Coffee and Gore have similar running styles as both are power guys but Coffee and even Kory Sheets are both hungry rookies eager to explode at every opportunity. If they are going to experiment with the “Taser” form of the Wildcat offense why limit it to just putting a wide receiver in the backfield? Put Coffee and Gore back there, put the young speedster Sheets back there (assuming he makes the 53 man roster). The team isn’t very deep at receiver right now without Crabtree for who knows how long and without Brandon Jones for a couple months at least so they need the decent receivers they have to stay healthy without risking injury running a bunch of direct snaps.
Glen Coffee is currently leading the NFL in rushing yards-preseason or not that deserves some merit come the regular season. Gore is the franchise player on offense without question, but to keep him healthy and durable for the full year he needs some help. I’m not seeing much help for him at the quarterback position myself. If they’re gonna run the ball, share the workload and run all over teams. I’m just saying.
