What We Learned: Jets at 49ers

The 49ers won their second game in a row under Mike Singletary and also for the second week in a row played spoiler. After winning all aspects of the game against the Jets, the Yorks need to remove the interim title at head coach and lock Singletary up now. Also while they are at it, give Martz any amount of money they can to keep him OC for years to come. Here is what else we learned after the 49ers 24-14 victory over the Jets.

  • Before the game the 49ers lathered themselves in butter, five fumbles on the day.
  • I love Shaun Hill. He may not be pretty, but he gets the job done.
  • Shaun Hill > Brett Favre (well at least today.)
  • Brad Smith still has no idea where he is at after getting drilled by Patrick Willis.
  • On the touchdown callback to Delanie Walker, Joe Staley did his best Kwame Harris impersonation.
  • Jim Nance will never be able to pronounce David Baas’ name. He said Rose, Base, Boze and then some.
  • Even though the 49ers scored without Gore in the lineup, it was still apparent they need him in the game.
  • Singletary > Nolan. Singletary 3-3, Nolan 2-5.
  • It was beautiful watching Brett Favre emotionless on the sidelines, over and over again.
  • The secondary did a great job shutting down the Jets receivers, despite Nate Clements inactive. Cotchery/Coles combined for 2 catches 15 yards.
  • The offensive line likes Shaun Hill more than they do JT O’Sullivan.
  • Who is this Kris Jenkins I keep hearing about.
  • Jason Hill is the future at wide receiver.
  • Manusky does much better job with defense when he is on the sidelines.
  • Isaac Bruce is so clutch.
  • Seven weeks ago we would have never seen these numbers. TOP: SF 39:49 – NYJ 20:11, SF 375 total yards – NYJ 182 total yards
The Pundit of 49ersNews. I do what I can to supply the Niner fans with their fix.

Ya Cardinal fan, Once every 30 years or so you deserve a chance. Lets see what you do in the playoffs. Just a reminder, we have 5 and ya'll have none.

  • AXEGRINDER

I really don't think we need to focus on the wide receiver position in the offseason. We need a pass rush. We should focus on the O-line and D-line and maybe take a "diamond in the rough" quarterback in the 4th round. The trenches still need some help. It all starts there.

  • Ninerfan81

Here's the link to the vid on YouTube. Not the best quality but man what a hit!!!!!! Funny thing was if you slow it down the ball comes out of his right arm before his knee is on the ground. But nobody challenged the play.

  • Lowrance

    HOT DAMN!!!!!!

Niners played a very good game!!!!
O Line blocked and gave Hill time!
D Line actually put pressure on Favre!!!!
    Ran the ball well
Spread the ball around to our receivers!
    BRRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCEEE!!!!
Patrick! That hit made Ronnie Lott proud!!!

Now…. can we go out and buy some stickem????

    Speaking on Kwame…thanks Pundit.
Was watching the Raiders game and saw Kwame’s facemask hold… I’ve been watching football since the 70’s and never seen an OL do that! Add to that the announcers said Kwame leads the league in penalties for an OL….. and the Raiders think they stole him from us!
    LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • cardinalsWESTCHAMPS

HAHAHAHA YOU LITTLE BITCHES WE ARE WEST CHAMPS THIS YEAR!!!!! GO CARDS AND KURT WARNER FOR MVP!!!!!!! GO CARDS GO,GO CARDS GO.

  • A True Niner Fan

What a Great Win! …Im so Proud of our Guys there playing so much better this is what 49er Football is all about…Go Niners!

  • Rochester

The best all around game they’ve played this year.

I don’t know about anybody else, but I want Mike Singletary coaching this team next year.

  • DCNinerFan

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and again. Winning the NFC and AFC West divisions is like accidentally winning the lottery… It doesn’t take much skill, and like the 49ers they’ve only won against 2 teams with a winning record. I’ll say this, they have a good offense, but not good enough defense… Arizona gets booted in the first round…

  • NINERTIME

    SING and HILL in 2009

  • Ninerfan81

Totally agree that we need to keep Coach Sing around for a while and keep Martz as well. Whatever they’re doing it’s working!! There’s no reason in the world why we can’t beat Miami on a warm Sunday (perfect weather for the niners) and the Rams at Home! The Washington game might be tuff, but we’ll be in the game with Shaun Hill back there.

  • Ninerfan81

Oops, my bad, we play AT the Rams and home to Washington. Here’s to an 8 an 8 record!

  • Texas9er

Don’t be suprised to see the 49ers sign up Singletary after this win. and for the first time this year I think we need to bring Martz back next year. The team doen’t need to relearn a new offense every year. With a few tweaks in the offseason ( T.J. Hosyourmoma) we can win the west. As for the QB, I like Hill. I think we should keep him the starter for next year and draft a QB in the @nd or #rd round to sit and learn and use our first pick on a LT or a pass rusher and move Staley to right, or if there is a top corner still on the board take him.

  • Texas9er

    I meant 2nd or 3rd pick not @nd and #rd. My bad

  • Billy

McKnight from USC is a gamebreak, and Crabtree might not declare this year

Hey pundit any chance we can see the willis hit on brad smith I heard it was awesome and he can expect a fine soon

  • Billy

Link for Willis knocking Brad Smith the Fuck OUT!! Ill admit it was pretty damn scary, I feel sorry for the guy, as for Willis the MAN is a BEAST!!! All the more reason to go to the Pro Bowl

  • Mike in MD

Great win vs a playoff team & huge props to Coach Singletary. This is the best game we’ve played. That said the Jets are 30TH VS THE PASS. Not trying to be a KJ on this W just think this needs to be said. We’re not all that YET with our passing game. I like how the youngsters are coming along though…JHill, Morgan, & Ziegler.

Also props to TBrown who’s making steps towards being a legit CB on his way towards getting Walt’s job. JSmith was awesome today vs Faneca & the left side. Haralson was solid again & is establishing what type of player he is. He’s got some jets & has a good speed rush. (Great late round draft pickup.)

Wish we could see more of Willis blowing up these guys. That was his hardest hit I can remember since the 1st AZ game when he blew up the TE in the end zone coming across the middle for a pass. (Mike Sando in his blog said he could be playing injured & isn’t telling anybody.) His being quieter this year is understandable though since our DLine still needs work & Offenses/OL’s are now keying in on Willis & running right at him having to make him work twice as hard. I’ve seen many times guards/tackles coming untouched right at Willis.

What a weekend…..1st my man Pacquiao demolishes Oscar (UNBELIEVABLE) & now this. Feels awesome to kick Favre’s ass! Great W, NINERS!

  • Loeher

My dream would be the 49ers locking up Haynesworth and Suggs in the Offseason. Maybe TJ Howisyourmamma.

Then draft some OL, a late QB to develop.

  • Crazy Dave

And i wish we would get them too guys Haynesworth and Suggs but thats like living in a Madden 2009 world we would be lucky to get one of them if they are not franchised.

  • Crazy Dave

And how many people think that Shawnte Spencer or J. Jennings will be back next year??

  • joe gomez

Looks like we finally have a team and a head coach.

  • Mike in MD

Crazy Dave….Haynesworth & Suggs are both already franchised. They'll be in the open market when FA hits. CAN'T WAIT.

Haynesworth is a long shot (on a great team with a great HC.) Suggs probably along the same line in that both are on monster Defenses. But MONEY TALKS BABY. Couple that with a long term contract for some security……..I think these guys CAN be had. Especially Suggs, if I remember right he's a West Coast guy. Grew up/went to school in Arizona I believe.

  • Mike in MD

Shane..what would make us a DOMINANT DEFENSE (if we stay in the 3-4) is a stud NT who can 2-gap & anchor the middle PLUS a 100% legit stud pass rusher.

The icing on the cake would be for one of our young ones to take over for Walt & Roman/FS otherwise we need to pick these guys up from FA or the Draft.

UNFREAKINBELIEVABLE THAT AN NFL DC IN NOLAN WHO FROM DAY 1 WANTED TO CONVERT US INTO A 3-4 DEFENSE NEVER GOT THE 2 MOST CRITICAL PIECES TO MAKE THIS THING WORK. THE ANCHOR NT & PLAYMAKING LEGIT NATURAL PASS RUSHER. IF THE YORKS DID ANYTHING RIGHT IT'S FINALLY GETTING RID OF THE LOSER. TYPICAL THOUGH IT TOOK THE YORKS LONGER THAN IT SHOULD HAVE. LET'S HOPE THESE DORKS FINALLY ARE LEARNING!!

4 FREAKIN' YEARS & WE'RE STILL TRYING TO FIND THESE 2 PIECES. IT'S LIKE REBUILDING YOUR OFFENSE WITHOUT A LEFT TACKLE & YOUR QB. WITHOUT THEM YOUR GOING NOWHERE.

BTW Singletary's finally got Franklin 1-gapping & penetrating which is why he's starting to make plays. 2 years under Nowin & this so called Defensive expert never could see this…so freakin' simple. GOOD RIDDENS.

  • stokes83

    keep preaching the truth…

i LOVE reading your articles, what we learned.

  • Mike in MD

Shane..my bad. Haynesworth & Suggs are a DT & pass rusher. You're right about close to completing the D.

But Haynesworth is a 4-3 DT, not a NT. But he's so good we would find a way to make him work if we stayed in the our current 3-4. I would replace McDonald & put him in at one of the DE spots & JSmith at the other side. We still would need a stud anchor NT. In this setup McDonald would be a solid backup & we would have the luxury of rotating him in for Haynesworth or Smith to keep them fresh. What a dream come true that would be to get this guy & make this happen. You never know man, like I said we have a chance.

  • shane

i think Haynesworth would pretty much complete this defense. Then if you throw suggs in the mix your talkin top 5 defense in the league easily. I doubt it will happen, but its fun to think about.

Great win though. Shaun Hill for 09

  • junebug408

to that bitch ass cardinal fan. eat a dick. you got no room to talk shit. don't turn into a fagat ass raider fan or cock sucking seahawks fan and think you can talk shit now. enjoy this season and that ONE game the cards will play in the playoffs. i got nothin against the cards fans, but with dumbfucks like you that shit is about to change.

  • West

    Any word on Gore?

  • 9ermanforlife

If we loose singletary after this year i will have lost all respect for the yorks.. oh yea good game

  • Crazy Dave

as good as that hit was with Patrick Willis I think this messed up league with fine Willis for helmet to helmet bull shit!!But i loved watching it over and over again!!! ;0

  • 9nerfan

we need terreance cody from alabama for nose tackle. the guy guy is an absolute feak of nature. 6’6′, 6’7 360. there’s our future nt. hopefully we draft him.

  • 9ermanforlife

fuck the cards… hope they enjoy their 1 playoff game this year… 49ers COMIN BACK IN 09-10

  • 9ermanforlife

hey pundint, wut is this i hear about Martz is the head coaching candidate at sandiego state?

  • http://clearwire james_v

9nerfan, I agree with the cody pick. He’s a beast just like Willis but I don’t know how deep in the draft he will be available. I think Hill should be the starter in ’09 and Martz should be retained. We can not go into another season trying to learn another offense. WHY HAVE THE YORKS NOT SIGNED SING TO A LONG TERM DEAL, HE HAS THIS TEAM PLAYING AT SUCH A HIGH LEVEL.

  • http://www.hotmail.com Ryan the 1st

Singletary NEEDS to be resigned before the Washington game. Also, for some of the doubters about us BEATING WASHINGTON….have you guys seen HOW INJURY depleted their O line is. They are starting dudes from their practice squad starting next week. They got BEAT UP BAD the last few week. I still think that TJ Houshmanzadeh needs to be signed to a long term deal. I think people are losing sight of the fact that Bryant Johnson is a free agent at the end of this year and then Bruce will be after next season. Housh would solidify our young core of receivers. We NEED HOUSH and if we don’t get him then we need to make ONE big splash. I am CRAZY, but I STILL think that we need to put Staley back on the right tackle and draft or sign a big name left tackle. LOADHOLT would GREAT in a niner uniform. If we need a Defensive End…which we do…Justin Smith needs someone consistent on the other side. McDonald needs to prove to me still that he deserves to start….not enough consistency. Orakpho or TYson Jackson would fit that bill. Also, we NEED to start grooming a strong safety.

  • NINERTIME

    2009’ers

I just want to be playing a meaningful game right now! Sick of this next year stuff sound like freakin dodgers fans…

  • http://49ersfanboy.wordpress.com Indiana Jim

    Wow.

I only heard the call on the KNBR broadcast. He didn't really haul off and hit him all that much.

Imagine if he had. That dude would still be prone.

  • Crazy Dave

I hope Suggs does come here instead of Arizona.

  • Crazy Dave

ninerfan81 he was in mike nolans dog house when we did have him but what wide receiver wasn't in his dog house b4 when we did have Mike Nolan as you cant tell now …. our wide receivers stepped it up since mike Nolan left .

  • Ninerfan81

Didn’t we used to have a WR named Antonio Bryant? Damn!!

  • Doc Iac

How the hell did int'sulevin get the starting job…not sayin i love hill, hes ok, but int' was horrible

  • Ninerfan81

Yes, I know he was in Nolan's Dog house! But I do like Hill and Morgan with another year of Bruce teaching the young guys how to get open.

You don't need speed burners at WR if you're OC is doing his job and the QB is smart enough to take what the D is giving him.

  • 9ermanforlife

simply put Jt,o'turnover ruined our season.. ask yourself one simple question… wut would have happend if we had started hill at the the beginning of the season?

  • Niner Pundit

9erman if you blame JT, you might as well blame Martz along with him. It was Martz’ decision to go with O’Sullivan. Singletary went with Hill. If Nolan were still here JT would still be QB.

  • http://www.hotmail.com Ryan the 1st

Good point! Niner Pundit, are you satisfied with the O line AS IS right now??? Would you make any changes? What are the top three free agents we should pursue in your eyes? Lastly, what are the top three positions we need to look at in the draft?

  • Ninerfan81

Which is the real reason why Nolan wasn’t right for the team, not a smart HC and ultimately got himself fired! Like Sing, Nolan should’ve taken only advice from Martz, but make the “right” decision for the team. When you have someone who has won games for you then you start’em over someone who hasn’t…this is not rocket science here folks!

If the “system” is too complicated then “dummy” it down until Hill can run it at full speed. It is now obvious that Hill picked up the system faster then we (fans) we’re led to believe. Martz continued to tell Nolan that “JT gives us the best chance to win.” (I hope I never hear the phrase AGAIN!)

Nolan should’ve grown a large set and give JT the hook after the Philly game! Nolan always came across in his PC as a Man who liked to hear himself talk but didn’t really believe the words coming out of his mouth.

  • 9ermanforlife

Pundit u are right that martz should have not gone on and on with O’sulivan but I think that Martz is key to our success next year. It would be a bad idea to try and install another offense.

  • MSouza

Couldn’t agree more with you 9ermanforlife. I look at many of the successful teams around the league and they have consistency, not necessarily with the coaches but with the system, and I’m not sure if there is anybody else that can run Martz’s offense.

Anybody else noticed how our defense looks better now that Nolan is gone? I was a fan of Nolan, but since he left the team looks much better, which makes the coaching staff look better too.

  • 9ermanforlife

msouza, i agree our defence is looking better. i think its a combination of nolan being gone and P willie not wearing the headset anymore

  • Lottie901

THE FIRST 7 GAMES DURING THE MIKE NOLAN HORROR WITH J.TurnOver, THE NINERS WERE 2-5 AND TurnOver HAD 1678yds-8TD's-11INT'S-11FUM AND THE DEFENSE COULDN'T STOP ANYBODY ON THIRD DOWN. NOW DURING THE MIKE SINGLETARY ERA,THE NINERS ARE 3-3 AND "THE REAL DEAL" SHUN HILL HAS 1352yds-10TD's-4INTS AND THE DEFENSE IS PLAYING LIGHTS OUT, JUST ASK BRAD SMITH! {I HOPE HES OK THO} WHAT A DIFFERENCE A CHANGE AT QB AND COACH HAS MADE 4 THEM 49ERS MANE!

  • 9ermanforlife

wow lottie jt'oturnover 11 ints and 11 fumble damn … shaun has played life half as many games and he has 10 td and 4int…. gotta be saying something good about Sing and hill damn

  • Lottie901

SINGLETARY AND MARTZ SHOULD BE SIGNED BEFORE THE SEASON ENDS! REALLY AFTER THE NEXT WIN!

  • 9ermanforlife

agreed we cant afford to loose either of them… and wut is this trash that i hear about fucking alex smith coming back next year… wtf is up with that shit we dont need that pushover peice of shit qb

  • ninerfaithful

ok so here is what i am thinking about the hiring of HC it should be Sing no doubt we should retain martz and manusky but we all know whos making the decision JED YORK and if he wants any success or even a close image of what his uncle eddie built it takes that one hire as it did for eddie and JED he has fallen into your lap sign him and we could have a dynasty sooner rather than who knows when but no matter what this faithful is always going to be go niners and the win still feels great

  • DCNinerFan

I have to wonder if people don't pay a 12 year old boy to write some of these posts for them… The are utterly incomprehensible… That being said, does anyone else sense a new style to the Martz offense… I mean, yes big plays, we are number one in big plays over 20, but clock control and sustained drives seem to be the big key to our offensive resurgence, and Hill has no small part in that. He's a big reason why. However, I also think that Martz is being forcibly made to innovate based on the assets, not try and bring back the Greatest Show, like he tried in Detroit… He may be a mad scientist on offense, but I feel Singletary is putting his foot down and forcing Martz to innovate in ways he probably hasn't had to.

That being said, the Defense has been rock solid, if not stellar, in shutting down in the red zone. Gotta give props to Singletary for that… Just my 2 cents.

    Go Niners!

  • 9ermanforlife

HEY pundint.. what do you think about martz and sing together.. do you think we need 1 just as much as the other. what are yours thoughs on the situation?

  • 9ermanforlife

Also pundint.. wut 5 first possitions do you think we should draft first… also what possitions in free agency do you think we should go for?

  • Ninerfan81

The League has a Rule that doesn’t allow teams to sign a someone who’s been promoted from Interm-Coach to HC during the regular season. The League requires a level playing field when it comes to the hiring of a new HC for all NFL Teams.

Meaning, Teams don’t know which Heach Coahes will be fired at the end of the regular season. So, Owners have to wait to go through the neccessary process to see what other HC might be avialable and make offers/interviews with other candidates.

Even thou the York’s might have a deal with Singletary and Martz agreed in principal (wink, wink) they must wait until the end of the season to make them a public offer.

  • Adrian

I don't care what anyone says get it through your thick skulls SHAUN HILL is the next big quarterback. Keep Singletary as defense coortinator, and we should get Bill Billeck

and get Nolan back as some type of coach, because that is a automatic Super bowl win.

By the way if Vick gets re-enstated we should pick him up. The Niners have NEVER had a black quarterback. If you think about it, he and Hill can both run the ball well for playing quarterback.

    Free Vick
