It’s Official, Singletary Named Head Coach

The 49ers removed the interim tag today and officially announced the hiring of Mike Singletary as Head Coach. According to the Press Democrat the details of the contract is four years, $10 million. In the contract he has the right to hire and fire his assistant coaches. Here is a little more from Maiocco:

Team president Jed York made the announcement to the team shortly after the 49ers’ 27-24 victory over the Redskins on Sunday. There was already euphoria in the locker room, and the players erupted with cheers after they were told that Singletary would be the coach.

“I think all the guys who are happy today are going to regret it,” Singletary quipped.

Singletary is known as a straight-talking taskmaster who works his players hard. The 49ers better get prepared for a long offseason of work and a grueling training camp.

“This is the last time our season ends in December,” York said.

Hey Mike, do us all a big favor and CUT sorry ass Mark Roman!

  2. AXEGRINDER says:

What about Shanahan for OC? He might get canned if they lose tonight and it looks like they’re going to. Plus he was our OC last time we won a Superbowl. Just a thought.

  3. joe gomez says:

Hey Axe, Shanahan would be welcomed back by all Niner fans. Martz/Shanahan/N.Turner should be front runners. I want Holmgren to replace stupid ass Scot McCLueless.

  4. Ryan the 1st says:

Shanahan would be a different way to go. He has been a HC so long I don’t know what he would be like as a OC. If Norv makes the playoffs then he is going no where. It is either keep Martz, maybe get Shanahan, and I have heard whispers that they might go after Haslett if he gets fired….that would be a stupid mistake in my worthless opinion.

  5. Shane says:

    Shanahan? Huh?

I mean, come on guys….it’s not very likely now, is it? Billick might be nice as well (and may be more realistic for a few reasons); but it ain’t gonna happen.

  6. Ryan the 1st says:

Scott McCloughan DOES NEED TO REDEEM HIMSELF a little to me. This offseason he better give Haralson, Spikes, AND BAAS new contracts. His IDIOTIC theory of not paying guards would be laughable to me if he wasn’t in charge of getting players for my team. Baas needs a new contract. I think Haralson and Spikes want to stay in SF, but if they give no love to Baas then that is plain stupid. Guards are REALLY important and if you don’t believe me then tell Adrian Peterson that Steve Hutchinson isn’t important…same for Alan Faneca. I am not saying Baas is as good as them, but he is a talent and we would be foolish to just let him go through his contract and then just give him a handshake and friendly good-bye. This is going to be a KEY offseason for my faith in McCloughan. His draft last year had a few questionable moves.

  7. AXEGRINDER says:

Shanahan I admit is a longshot, but it’s just a thought. I’m sure during that interview earlier this week Singletary was asked what he plans to do. And I’m sure he gave a good answer. We just don’t know who it’s gonna be. One person we can definately rule out is Jim Hostler. Whatever answer Singletary gave, it contributed to him getting the job. So we will just have to wait and see.

  8. Glenn Maves says:

hi ithink mike singletray is the best thing that happend to the the 49ers in very long time . the way he came the coach and took over the 49ers and we all came together we started to win games it is beautiful.the other teams in the nfl better watch out the 49ers are back. i know the49ers will clinch there division next year . i bet 1/2 years the 49ers will get to the super bowl and win.thank god we are back.gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo49erssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss (congratulatiins) mike singletray i have been a fan since 1975 it been the greatest watching the 49ers all those years. and i see a great thing here just you wait and see . i am the best fan.

  9. AXEGRINDER says:

According to Kevin Lynch, Singletary wants to keep Martz. If that’s true, I guess I’ll be eating my words on that one. Sorry Ryan and 9erman. I tried to post the link, but it didn’t work.

  10. Ryan the 1st says:

Never have to apologize to me Axegrinder…you are a true vet on this site. It looks as if the niners will be flipping a coin with the Buffalo Bills to see who gets the 10th pick in the draft this year.

  11. Ryan the 1st says:

Actually we might just be getting the 11th pick since we beat Buffalo.

  12. Ryan the 1st says:

This link says we get the tenth pick, but I would think there will be at least a coin toss since we BEAT BUFFALO.

  13. MSouza says:

Yeah 11 it is. We did alright last time we had the 11th if I’m not mistaken.

Just to let you guys know I’m a huge fan of Taylor Mays and will probably get almost as annoying as ninersgold last year with James Hardy, so I’m apologizing in advance.

  14. Mike in MD says:

This is my calculation of the Draft order. Strength of schedule is based on last year. The SB winner & runner up is always picks 31/32 regardless of record. (For the Rams/Chiefs the next tie breaker is division/conference records.)

    W-L / Strength of schedule
    1 Lions 0-16 .558
    2 Rams 2-14 .535
    3 Chiefs 2-14 .535
    4 Seahawks 4-12 .498
    5 Browns 4-12 .573
    6 Bengals 4-11-1 .560
    7 Raiders 5-11 .521
    8 Jaguars 5-11 .535
    9 Packers 6-10 .513
    10 Bills 7-9 .450
    11 SF 49ERS 7-9 .456
    12 Broncos 8-8 .454
    13 Redskins 8-8 .481
    14 Saints 8-8 .492
    15 Texans 8-8 .515
    16 Chargers 8-8 .517

  15. #1 says:

Niners have the 10th pick of the draft! it is posted on ESPN

  16. Lowrance says:

I like the comment by Mike saying he thinks all the players who cheered might be sorry, lol. I still remember his friends calling him when he took over, saying don’t kill the players!

10th or 11th. It will be very interesting seeing who Mike chooses.

I agree with paying linemen. I still remember our all pro guard Brown going down in the Green Bay game years ago, and the very next play the sub got run over and I think it was Bono that got sacked. A good line makes every player better on both sides of the ball. As we’ve seen, it gets quarterbacks injured and their efficency drops like a rock.

2 more Justin Smiths and a 400lb nose tackle, lol.

  17. Lowrance says:

    one more thing….

The Cowboy loss felt almost half as good as a Dodger loss!

  18. R,Craig33 says:

I haven’t commented on here in a long time but the news that Mike Singletary was named head coach was very refreshing and I read the article on the espn site and it said after the game in the locker room they annouced him as head coach and the said the locker room erupted so it makes the players happy so I’m happy I can’t wait to see what he will do with the team and throw away nolans trash and who he will get and not have a draft like we had last that had me like WHAT THE FUCK???????? and I’m quit sure all of yall was too I say except for morgan and we have the 10th pick from what I saw last night on espnnews.

  19. R,Craig33 says:

My bad #1 you already annouced we had the 10th pick.

  20. Lowrance says:

Hmmmm..maybe it was Rattay and not Bono….more recent.

  21. Lott says:

All i got to say is YAAAAAAAAAA! We gonna bring the 49ers Back to the glory days! The Dallas Hillbillies lost, the hillbillies lost, all I got to say B.O. is, STILL WANNA BE A COWBOY! HAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! TO HELL WITH THOSE HILLBILLIES! THE 49ERS ARE BACK! GET READY ESPN, GET READY AMERICA!

  22. SANCHEZ says:

I love what you say Lott, to hell with those Cowturds! I think we needd to sign Cassell in the offseason before the patriots tag him as their franchise palyer, thats what espn was saying this morning. Wew need to pull this off and get a high calibur QB and keep hill as a Bono like backup. then in the offseason and in the draft we need to go after Big physical tall receivers, and this team will be back to the old 49ers! W

  23. Lott says:

The Cowboys Lost HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! t.o. still want to be a Cowbooooy! Ha ha to hell witgh those hillbillies! the 49ers are the standard in football, the Real Americas Team!

  24. Rob says:

Singletary is definitely the guy we need to move forward. I approve of this head coach decision much more so than the last two. I hope he can finally turn things around.

As for Martz, I think a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. So, while Martz isn’t the best fit for our personnel, he didn’t do too bad of a job with our offense, even after losing his golden boy, JTO. I think Singletary might just be the guy to keep Martz’s ego in check. But, it could also be a recipe for disaster. That said, are there any really viable alternatives available? I think an experienced OC would be best, since Singletary is a defensively minded coach. But, there really aren’t any good experienced OCs out there. I think Turner would be a good fit, but he will probably stay in San Diego since the Chargers made the playoffs. And, I can’t really think of anyone else I like. So, we may be stuck with Martz, for better or for worse.

Hey, does anyone have a link for the site that shows the draft order, with SF picking 10th? I can’t find it anywhere.

  25. Lowrance says:

ok, I tried printing the link twice here…let’s try again, even though it said I’ve already sent that message. Cuz I’ve signed off and back on and still don’t see it!

  26. Lottie901 says:

THE MEDIA HAS HYPED THE SINGLETARY/MARTZ SAGA EVERY SINCE HE WAS NAMED COACH AFTER MIKE HOLAN. I FEEL LIKE ITS A BUNCH OF BULL. WITHOUT THE PLAY CALLING OF MARTZ, WE WOULDN’T HAVE NEVER WON THAT GAME YESTERDAY. I SAY KEEP MARTZ!!!!!! WITH SINGLETARY RUNNING THE TEAM AND MARTZ RUNNING THE OFFENSE I SAY NFL TEAMS, “WATCH YOUR ASSES CAUSE WE BACK!” P.S. FUCK ESPN!! BEHIND CLOSE DOORS, THERE R MANY 49ERS HATERS IN THE MEDIA. IF U DO NOT BELIEVE JUST LOOK AT WHEN THEY SHOW HIGHLIGHTS OF A TEAM, THEY HAVE TO PUT A CLIP OF THAT TEAM MAKING A PLAY ON THE 49ERS. IT DOESN’T MATTER IF WE PLAYED THEM OR NOT. THEY DIG UP CLIPS!!!!!! THE MEDIA STARTED THAT MARTZ SHIT. WHY, BECAUSE THE LAST THING HATERS WANT IS FOR THEM 9ERS TO GET IT TOGETHER. ITS ONE THING ABOUT THE 49ERS, WE DONT LOSE SUPER BOWLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Rob says:

Thanks for the link, Lowrance. Not that I didn’t believe you guys, I just needed to see it for myself.

You know, through all the wins with Singletary, the only drawback to it was that I was thinking we wouldn’t get as good of a draft pick in April. But, all the progress we made the second half of this year, and we still get a top ten pick? Not bad.

I’m excited to see what direction they go with this pick. Normally I would say QB or WR, but we found some pretty reliable options for those positions this year. Not to say we shouldn’t draft anyone in those positions. On the contrary, I think we should use a high pick on a QB. But, I think we could wait until the second or third round for that. We could get a really good pass rusher at no. 10, but even there, we have some possibilites for the future with Parys Haralson and Ray McDonald. I say we either get a stud tackle to replace Jennings/Sims on the right side of the line, or we get a corner or safety to bolster our secondary. Any other thoughts?

  28. seekret_sauce says:

I miss those days when we had good help in the safety position…I hold my breath every time the ball goes deep.

Maybe we’ll be drafting a Safety with our #10 pick? Or trade it for ED REED haaaaaa(!!)…only in Madden..

  29. AXEGRINDER says:

They should name Hill the starter for ‘09 and get it over with already. It’s his job to lose. I don’t want to hear anything about a QB competition in training camp. Make Alex Smith the #2, and draft a #3 with solid potential in the later rounds. Oh, and kick JTO’s ass off this football team. Turnovers machines have no place here.

Shaun Hill busted his ass for the 49ers and deserves the job until someone comes in and unseats him. I don’t mean in training camp, either.

  30. Rebels says:

We need to draft Aaron Curry with our #10. Take a look at this hit on youtube and dude runs a 4.6 40. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVXxYUH7U7c&feature=related2009
LB corp will be Willis, Spikes, Lawson, Curry.

Defense wins Championships. Let’s shore up that D!!!

  31. Rebels says:

He won this the 2008 Butkus Award. That would give us two LB’s that have won this award. Not to mention he’s an outside LB with speed. If your not sold yet check out this clip.

  32. AXEGRINDER says:

I read on ESPN that Martz’s agent will be pushing for him to get the HC job in Oakland. That’s probably a very likely scenario. Davis would probably give Martz complete autonomy and then fire him at the end of the year when the Raiders go 3-13 and not pay him anything.

I also read that maybe Singletary wants to keep Martz but Martz is the one holding out. It’s pathetic to have our beloved franchise strung along by an offensive coordinator.

  33. 9nerfan says:

i like taylor mays from usc with that pick. big time safety. but then again there terrance cody from alabama or a very good pass rushing olb. either one would be good. what do you guys think.

  34. diehard9er says:

Gentlemen, this is my first time on the site, and I love my niners! Mike Martz has done a terrifc job with this offense. Lets not forget where we were the previous years. Our delima is that we get OC’s that want to be head coaches, and they leave after a year or two. Martz is good, but how long “if asked” will he stay?

  35. West says:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80dc0ce0&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

    49ers
Home: Arizona, St. Louis, Seattle, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Tennessee

Away: Arizona, St. Louis, Seattle, Green Bay, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Houston, Indianapolis

  36. West says:

Why are my comments awaiting moderation?

  37. diehard9er says:

I think our defense is a bigger concern than our offense this past year. Martz/Hill put up the points, but we couldn’t get a decent pass rush on anybody without blitzing the entire team. We really missed ‘BY’! We have a great DE,LB’s and a top notch CB. What are we lacking?

  38. Niner Pundit says:

West…it’s because they contain links. That is the only reason. I usually approve them as soon as I see them. For some reason if you post a link it puts it into moderation queue.

  39. MSouza says:

The reason we don’t get pressure is that Haralson and Lawson are not there yet. Haralson had a very good year, but he isn’t consistently getting pressure. It isn’t all about sacks, pressures are often more important. If you get at a QB’s feet almost every drop back it is going to rattle them. I think next year we may be able to accomplish that with our current personnel.

  40. Lottoman says:

Axegrinder, you are right on about Shaun Hill. No need for any dicking around searching for a “quality” quarterback when we have a starting QB with obvious ability, leadership, heart, and GUTS!!! With a full offseason’s worth of training, Shaun Hill can lead us to win the NFC West, and perhaps more! GO #13!!!! God Bless Shaun Hill!

  41. Lottoman says:

AND…forgot to mention…send JTO packing PRONTO, he’s freakin’ worthless. If Alex Smith wants to hang around as a 3rd string backup, pay him $8.00 per hour, California minimum wage. That’s about all he’s worth.
