Singletary To Take Over?

Barring a dramatic change of course, the San Francisco 49ers plan to fire head coach Mike Nolan after the team’s game against Seattle on Sunday, a source told ESPN’s Michael Smith on Monday.

Next week is the 49ers’ bye week. Nolan is expected to be replaced by assistant head coach Mike Singletary. When reached by ESPN, a 49ers spokesman said: “We don’t respond to speculation. We are focused on Seattle.”

    It's about time

  • Mike in MD

I'm right here…sounds good man. Like the sources. I'll have to play it quiet & not root for us to lose. Just stay with the same you know?? Everytime I pull for us to win we've been getting hammered. Just have to wait & see. IF IT HAPPENS I'LL BE PARTYING HARD!!!!!!!

    I like Singletary..keeping the fingers crossed…..

  • http://clearwire james v

I think the immediate impact will be how emotional and fired up the players would be. Its also interesting to see if Nolan has Martz come out and just try to score as many points as possible. I don't see Gore getting a lot on the ground again this week, look for Noland to do something to save his job. I would like to have seen something like a play action to VD or a deep pass to start the game. I have always felt you have to see if the opposing defense is awake and paying attention.

lets hope it's true and da do it right……….Singletary

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=36542

  • Steve

please be true I would much rather have Singletary than Martz as HC

  • Mike in MD

James..your right about the deep pass early just to check it out. I can't remember ever doing that. You can't call that DWalker crossing pattern deep but was a nice play. We've been barely missing on some big plays & VD again last week dropping that one right in his hands. Dude can't seem to breakout but we still should keep feeding him the ball short then run for YAC…much higher % vs harder flys at full speed (lower % success) which Martz was initially ONLY going to do. Looks like Martz has caught on to VD in the short passing game…

I was for keeping Lelie who is the 2ND GUY we have that actually legitimately SCARES DEFENSES with his SPEED. I smell Nolan cutting the ties on that one to tell Martz he's in control.

I read that Singletary won't touch Martz….hey that's alright with me. If he can just fix the D we can really turn this around. The O is fixable, the teams still just starting to click w/MM's Offense. Singletary came from a 4-3 right?? He can help Manusky. Then I hope he 1-GAPS with the personnel you talked about & turns them loose. More press coverage, let faster TBrown take over for WHarris if he lags putting him on nickel, etc… man, I'm just wishing this HAPPENS!!

One thing's got me stumped…..how did Michael Smith get the news before the local beat writers?? I don't see it on Maiocco, Barrows, or other blogs, YET?? JUST HOPE IT'S TRUE MAN…. Will check back later, gotta run & take care of some things…….

  • YesIsaidIT

Great news! Singletary is going to get a head coaching job at some point in his future, with or without us. Nice to get a free test ride for the rest of the season!

  • Ninaz

    halelulla!!!

  • http://clearwire james v

The defense is fixable also, last year they blitzed more just like this year. It was not burning us last year nor this year. They should do it until it begins to burn them. If Singletary takes over I think Martz will have sole control of the O. The two tight end formation needs to be used more, they can run so much out of it like screens and just running straight ahead. Put a hat on someone, whip their ass and run down field…

  • http://clearwire james v

Well I just like everyone respect Nolan but he has lost control of this team. I think that is why everyone like Young and Difer say he is a good coach. Its just not working with him in the Bay. It is obvious when you see it on the tube. No one went to JTO when he threw int's and the personal foul calls are a direct result of no discipine from the coaches. Singletary would have command with simply his presence on the field. Last year I heard a story about P-Willy not wanting to spend a few thousand on a laptop so that he could look at film away from the facility. All it took was a few words from Singletary and P-Willy wised up and spent the cash. His voice alone will rally the team…

  • NINERTIME

First off about players calling Nolan a good coach, one time Dilfer came into my work before he was on the niners, and Erickson had just became our coach, and I asked him about that since he played for him on Seattle, he said he was a good coach, and we all know about that…worse thing that ever happen to the niners!

And all I know is that when I was growing up watching the GREAT niners through the 80's there was a player on another GREAT team with the eyes! All over the field, super intense, played on one of the best defenses ever, coached by a good solid coaching, both ditka and ryan, I think Singletary will do a better job and I mean its not going to be worse, this is what we all wanted…

we have 4 divisional games left we have to win those and somehow squeak out another 4 wins somewhere…Nolan is not going to do it, we know that, Singletary played on one of the best defenses ever, well I Montana still had his way for the most part!

  • NINERTIME

Right now we are only worried about this year, I can not stand to watch another freakin game with Nolan with that dumb ass look on this face!

holmgren I am down with, but he is talking about taking off a year before he makes any moves. Cower I am down with, but Marty ball is not coming to SF, no way!!! Does anyone remember this guy losing every AFC championship game he has coached in, 3 years in a row with the browns, you would think he would at least win won of those, bad luck!

  • Shiet

Finally! 9 games and a whole offseason late. Run that stubborn a-hole outta SF and give Singletary a shot.

  • NINERTIME

just reported on espn, nolan is done, SMELL YOU LATER!!!

  • Mike in MD

    MIKE NOLAN IS GOOOONNNNNNEEEEEEE!!!! YESSSSSSSSS….

OFF TO THE LIQUOR STORE FOR SOME VSOP!!! VIA ESPN

  • DeeKon52

ESPN was right about our owners. They are assholes.

  • joe gomez

Chris Sims wouldnt be a big upgrade from JTO.. he throws alot of INT's also. His dad was way better.

  • crazydave

MIKE NOLAN IS FIRED MIKE NOLAN IS FIRED!!!!!!!

  • A True Niner Fan

finally he is gunna pay for his sorry ass coaching….he has no one else to blame but himself….did anybody hear what Chris Berman was saying…that he didnt think the Niners owners made the right decsion and that Mike Nolan is a good coach???? WHAT? have they even been watching the last 3 years???? Mike Nolan hasnt done anything to be hailed as a good Coach…..Alex Smith, Jonas Jennings, Trent Dilfer BAD BAD Decisions the list goes on & on…Good Riddens!!!!!!!!

  • crazydave

TO BAD WE CANT GET HIM BACK AS DEFENSIVE CORDINATER..LOL

  • Vin

I think this was the best time… how could we wait a week? What if we beat Seattle!!!!! No grounds to fire nolan. Nolan's time is up. Singletary needs to turn this ship around. All we need is a spark… we are playing competitive football against good teams the last few weeks. JTO should be the QB for the rest of the year… if he shows that he cant win games, he'll be gone next year. If Singletary cant win, he'll be gone next year along with Martz bc there will be a new coach coming in.

I can actually see this unfolding- Holmgren or Billick, bringing back Garcia to run the west coast offense again. Or maybe even McNabb?

Either way, bye Nolan, you had us believing for a while, but the team has dissapointed… time to coach a defense only.

  • ritzay

Life (and football) is full of surprises!

Gotta give Singletary kudo's for takin this assignment….whoa, Nellie!

    LET'S GO NINERS!!!!!

  • NINERTIME

come on nolan did not leave so much crap like erickson left, he made a bad choice on a couple of players but he has also given us Gore and Willis, those are two pro-bowl players, that is not bad. He has put together a solid team he just doesn't know what to do with it. That is the problem, we all know this team can win, we have to give him some credit for doing that, but when it comes to coaching…SMELL YOU LATER!

  • http://www.49ersnews.com john

I think now the team will play much harder like the rams and hopefully bounce back

  • joe gomez

Does anyone think maybe Martz should of been the interim? I mean Singletary has about as much head coaching experience as he has a defensive coordinator which is = ZIP.

He was a great linebacker for the Bears and gives great inspirational speeches but can this guy just step in and manage a whole game? Hes a big question mark if you ask me. Oh well, atleast Nolan is history.

  • http://www.#1.com #1

This could be true, Micheal Smith is a reliable source.

  • Mike Martz

    Alleluia

  • http://clearwire james v

It is true, ESPN and Michael Smith are 100% reliable. The bye and then goodby… Mike in MD where are ya at???

  • Mike in MD

Just caught Dilfers comments on Singletary..sounds good! James what you said about the motivation thing in the beginning with Singletary if it happens….hey we’ll need that but after things calm down after 2-3 games we’ll find out what he’s really about. We have a “chance” to possibly have the makings of a very good HC here if he pans out.

We get a FREE LOOK since he’s trying to be a HC candidate already. Dilfer said Singletary ought to say to Martz we’re built to be a running team & should lean on Gore. I agree but we still have to have that passing game working..Martz will take care of that.

Answer me something…..all these damn reporters – Steve Young, Trent Dilfer, Mortensen, a lot of these media guys keep saying Nolan’s a good coach?????? Are they watching Niner games or is it just that they haven’t been following as closely as Niner fans???? I don’t get it.

  • NINERTIME

na, na, na, nah…na, na, na, nah…AAAAAAAAEEEEE GOOODBYE!

    PEACEOUT MR MIKE!

  • joe gomez

I still dont think that Singletary should be our long term answer. Holgrem/Cower/Marty/J.Johnson/Green.. somewhere along those lines. A PROVEN winner is what we need on this team. I am done with projects and experimetns. I would welcome him as our new Defensive Coordinator next year to replace Manusky however.

  • NINERTIME

what is it about the giants, the second to last game that Mooch coached in was against the giants, I was at that game, AMAZING comeback!

  • A True Niner Fan

Singletary in talks as we speak….preliminaries are he’ll take the job. Should be a formal announcement soon.

  • Mike in MD

Niner Pundit & James thank for the 1st heads up man!!

  • http://clearwire james v

Its 7:11 pm CST, ESPN News just announced Nolan out, Singletary in…

  • http://clearwire james v

On now on ESPN News, Chris Mortensen talking now….

  • http://clearwire james v

We still could use Holmgren in the Bay as GM, the Yorks need to see this and get him in to evaluate the talent. Chris Mortensen I feel was right about one thing we do not have the quarterback for a Martz offense but we do have the receivers. The wrong guy is throwing the rock. Anyone can win with Bruce, Johnson, Battle, Morgan and Hill. There may not be a true number one receiver in there but look at the Packers, they do it by committee. Mike in MD, any thoughts???

  • ritzay

I’m freakin sick…what happened to the “takes a village” idea…props to Singletary but, man o man…..

  • joe gomez

JTO is the BEST QB to run Martz’s offense period. There isnt any QB’s in house or outside that can run the offense any better. Hill doesnt know this offense and he cant throw the deep ball for this offense. Jamie knows the offense but he hasnt run it for some time and is older in age. JTO just needs to fix his turnover problems and hell be alright.

  • http://www.#1.com #1

Nolan Fired- Will not coach Seattle game this week, mike singelatory will coach seattle game

    ESPN REPORTS

  • http://49ersnews.com RAIDERKEV25

Great job niners, It’s not only the raiders organization that is terrible internally! Why do u guys keep promoting linebacker coaches?

  • FERNANDO ALCARAZ

WHEN WE LET GO OF NOLAN,I HOPE SINGLETARY LOOKS INTO CHRIS SIMS QB THAT WOULDNT BE A BAD IDEA

  • joe gomez

Well Nolan hired McCloughan who was part of all our bad draft picks so shouldnt he be fired too? They wont disclose who fired Nolan, everyone is waiting to hear the news. What if was Paraag “the bean counter/Coach” Maraathe? Hahaha.

  • Mike in MD

James..with Singletary in, I doubt Martz will now stay around. Just my opinion. He wanted that HC spot. That’s not to say he won’t do a good job, instead it’s the other way around. Treat it like a player in his contract year…he has to kick ass & do a good job with this Offense if he wants HC offers from other teams. It might be good in a way that it lights a fire to drive him.

If he leaves Bruce has served his purpose as he was the Martz route running mentor WR’s watched by example. 2 year contract I believe right?? I think he has 1 more year after this & should still be effective but that’s it. He’s a #3 WR to me with Bryant Johnson #2. I don’t see BJohnson as a #1, not enough explosiveness or home run speed but solid as a #2. Battle is a soldier but talentwise s/b a #3 at best. Morgan I see as the stud of the group & we’ll find that out in year 2 when WR’s start to show their colors. He’ll challenge Johnson for the #2 or if goes as we’re hoping can permanently be the #1. Right now I think we should try & re-sign BJ after this 1 yr contract since we’re short on talent on WR’s if he leaves. I believe we still need a true #1 stud WR. JHill….I just don’t know. Haven’t seen enough…I’m keeping an eye on what someone said that he catches with his chest first all the time. That’s not good for a WR & his 4.37/40 is NOT THAT AT ALL on the field. Juries still out on him but he still has talent.

Holmgren…I truly think this guy doesn’t want to HC anymore but would do it if that we’re the only job offered to him here. He LOVES SF & wants to stay here. He’d rather have a Fr Office job. My 2 cents is I say give McCloughan another shot at GM WITHOUT NOLAN’S INFLUENCE. Remember these 2 guys were tied at the hip & Nolan was the alpha dog between those 2. Even after Nolan was stripped of GM I think he still had McCloughan in his hip & psyche. I’m willing to see what McCloughan has ON HIS OWN WITHOUT NOLAN THIS TIME FOR REAL. Trust me I was pissed too, this years Draft sucked big time. NO FREAKIN’ STARTERS. (But remember prior to this year those were ultimately Nolan’s picks.) I think Holmgren would fit nicely similarly to Parcell’s role…VP of Player Operations. Now I don’t know how that would quite work.

In Miami Parcell’s calls all the shots. Off the top of my head right now Holmgren had a horrible record as GM with Seattle but it was a dual role with HC. Still it was a bad record. But he KNOWS FOOTBALL… AND NO ONE, I MEAN NOBODY IN THAT FRONT OFFICE KNOWS SHIT ABOUT FOOTBALL BESIDES WHAT MCCLOUGHAN KNOWS (& NOW MARTZ AS A COACH). I could see Holmgren being an advisor to Scott with Scott still making the picks. If Scott doesn’t do a good job next year then you can give him the axe.

If it’s HC for Holmgren so be it. I just hope he has the energy to do it & he should being that he would arrive at his dream location. So my choice is an advisor first if we can land the right HC & if the Yorks will spend the money for that added position. Holmgren as HC 2nd if Singletary doesn’t work out & we can’t find anybody better.

By the way…I was wrong that we would get Singletary for free, I didn’t know they were going to renegotiate on a new contract. Sorry for the long post.

  • Mike in MD

I agree with joe…JT is the best option we have to run Martz’s Offense period. We’re stuck with him do or die this season. But he better cut those turnovers & I MEAN QUICK because his teammates are gonna turn on him in a hurry. I think Hill’s a stop gap change of pace for 1 or 2 games. But who knows maybe he can surprise us??? But myself, I wouldn’t bet on it esp for the long haul.

  • Mike in MD

James about what you said about the 2 TE set Martz is starting to use that more. Totally agree. Sando on his NFC West blog charts all the formations & the production we get from them…the 2 TE comes through big for us.

About the QB I think JTO is the best we got for MM’s Offense. The main problem’s the OLine, dude runs for his life a lot of the games. With a solid OL I think he would be just fine. He needs to change his mentality though & be coached up to NOT GET GREEDY always holding & trying to go downfield & instead just needs to keep going for 1st downs. He’s passed up short/int open guys a lot. And these TO’s have to get fixed..he’s got his mind made up where he’s gonna throw but he’s not looking at the D & where the defenders are before he throws it. These are all correctable.

  • http://clearwire james v

Mike in MD, I don’t see too many other teams that would take Martz. Detroit won’t take him back, St. Louis may look. He won’t go to Oakland and Mora has Seattle locked up. There are only a few other teams that would give him a look. Everyone also needs to realize that Martz and JTO are only signed for this season. It could take a couple of seasons for Singletary to establish a real steady offense. If JTO can overcome his problems Martz and JTO could be retained for next year. JTO needs to quit hitting the panic buttom, he needs to realize thar he has checkdowns and I don’t know if he forgot that he can run for the first. Sometimes he seems to hesitate and tries to do too much. I think what could help him if he would break out the Seattle game and see what he did. Mike in MD, hit me back…
