Gameday: 49ers vs Packers

So much for the Smith-Rodgers matchup

So much for the Smith-Rodgers matchup

The Packers travel to San Francisco for an Aaron Rodgers homecoming and incase you haven’t read about it somewhere on the net yet. There will be a lot of talk about the quarterbacks from the 2005 draft and where they are now. We will not go into the woulda, shoulda, coulda crap, because quite frankly not sure any quarterback could have excelled with the way the 49ers offense has been handled the past 4 years. Okay enough rambling.

As well all know JT O’Sullivan is getting the start and the majority of starters will play the first half, with the exception of Isaac Bruce and Frank Gore who will see limited action. This game’s focus will be on the 49ers quarterbacks who are still looking for a starter. Aside from that another preseason game where those trying to make the team will see lots of action.

The following will be held out of tonight’s game: Bryant Johnson, Arnaz Battle and Ashley Lelie, as well as RB Michael Robinson, G David Baas and S Lewis Baker.

If you do not get the game live, NFLN will be reairing the game on Sunday the 17th at 10:00am PST.

The Pundit of 49ersNews. I do what I can to supply the Niner fans with their fix.

Medford I agree, I don't see Lelie making the team. In regards to Keasey, Nolan has always liked the kid and he is quicker than Norris and may be a better fit in Martz' system.

Lelie will be flipping burgers in a few weeks. He is another pompus azz receiver that, thinks his shat dont stink, even if they have achieved absolutly nothing in their career. Look at Brandon Lloyd. Prime example, all flash and no production. Besides Hill has looked awesome and we need room on the roster to keep this guy. He is a keeper. So we go with Johnson at #1, Bruce at #2, and Hill at #3. WAY BETTER than what we had last year. Unlike last year, this year we have an OC. Mad Mike has a plan. That plan does not include Alex Smith. He is a bust. The Jury is in, and the verdict has been handed to the Judge. The proof lies in the fact that he isnt praticing with the first team anymore and he isnt starting the Pre Season games. I'd be suprized if they dont trade or waive Smith before the end of the season if they can save any money at all. I heard that the Niners would save 20 Million in insentives if Smith isnt the starter. All the more reason to think the job is O'Sullivan's to lose. JT was a GREAT QB at UC Davis. He is a legend there. He is well know by us folks out here in the Sacramento area. He lead UC Davis DIV II to wins over DIV I schools. They won the DIV II championship twice when JT was there. The kid is a winner. He's not afraid. He's a local boy. I hope the kid just plays out of his mind and wins that starting job outright. He holds every QB record at UC Davis, and many DIV II records for completions and passing. The Kid can throw the ball on target thru traffic on the move and hit the receiver in stride. If Alex Smith even tried that, he would end up on the injured list. Smith can hardly hit a stationary target, and he stares down his receivers tipping off DB's where he is going to throw. I really hope that O'Sullivan comes out and lights it up today against the cheese heads. We just need our offense to be a little better so that our defense isnt on the field for 3/4 of the game. We need ball control. We have 2 very good running backs, and if we can keep defenses honest by making the timely pass, the Niners will win a few games this year. My main concern is the Offensive line. They looked horrible against a mediocre RayDUHS Defense. Our defense is the only bright spot on our team. It will be defense that wins games for the Niners this year, not the Offense. In fact, we need the Defense to score us some runs early in games this season and get turnovers to shorten the field for the offense. Especially in the first 4 or 5 games, to give the offense a chance to gel and catch up talent wise.

Dont use the RaDUHS game as a barometer for how the Niners will do this season. They always get geeked up for the Niners Pre Season game, then go on to lose the rest of the season. Lets wait until the end of the pre-season and even the first few games to judge this team, because this is a VERY young team that has a lot of upside. They will have to develop on the fly. Our Offense has to be better this year because statistically it is impossible to be worse. For all intents and purposes, we had no Offensive Coordinator last year. A Better Offense means a fresher Defense in the 4th quarter. If we can stay close in games and scratch across some runs early, this team could steal a couple of games as the season goes on. I can see a 6-10 or 7-9 season this year. And whoever is doing our draft in '09 better make a better choice of QB than a Big Arm college QB that plays in a gimmicky offense like the run and shoot. They should stay away from QB's that are uncomfortable receiving the snap from under center. And avoid QB's that can throw the ball very far but are very unaccurate. You know, a real NFL prospect like Aaron Rogers :-)
