Gameday: 49ers vs Bears

Kickoff is just a little over an hour away. I’m not going to spend much time talking about the matchup. I’m mainly looking forward to seeing more of Josh Morgan and see how O’Sullivan fares in his third start and hopefully the defense kicks ass like last week.

Feel free to discuss the game with other fans here in the comment section. I’ll have more to talk about after the game.

The Pundit of 49ersNews. I do what I can to supply the Niner fans with their fix.

i think its almost too deep into the preseason to change starters…if they would have wanted smith to have a crack at it, the woulda gave him a chnace to start in one of the games and get more reps with the first team, so id say unless sully completely bombs tonight, hes got the spot locked up…go defense!

  • Desert9er

    First Drive:

Our o-line is pretty good. Really nice runs from Gore and Keasey made possible by the big men up front. Stupid dump pass from JTO to Bruce. Another stupid dump pass from JTO to Gore that was not catchable… result: field goal. 60 yards on the ground. 5 yards via the air.

  • Desert9er

Troy Aikman: Lovie Smith decided to make a decision on the starting quarterback out of respect for his QBs and to make sure there were no distractions in the locker room. He didn't want this to carry too far into the pre-season…

    Umm.. thanks Nolan.

  • Desert9er

Ouch.. bad special teams… could not tackle Manning the Chicago returner on the play. 60 yard return. Defense looked pretty good but gave up a 21 yard TD… lots of Niners surrounding their receiver… nice pass from Orton. Ugh.

  • steve

is he just going to pass to Rbs so he can pad those stats?

  • Desert9er

    Second Drive:

JTO's passes looked pretty good at the beginning of this drive. Although the play calling was somewhat unoriginal at the goal line. The last play before the field goal may have been a coverage sack but on the replay, it looked like JTO was not scanning the field fast enough.. he was focused on the right side too long — he didn't even scan the left side although the TV angle did not show whether any receivers were open there. But I think Vernon sprang that way… not sure if he was open though.

  • Desert9er

NICE PASS from JTO. JTO to Vernon.

  • Desert9er

Not saying JTO is a stud… not by a long shot… but he seems "better" than Smith. Kind of like watching Favre though… moments of brilliance, moments of utter stupidity.

  • Desert9er

Ok, now we get to see more of Smith.

  • Desert9er

Troy Aikman: "Doesn't Orton look relaxed? Easy to look relaxed when you don't have the stress of a QB starting decision."

  • Desert9er

Chicago first team defense is still in there. Urlacher looking mean.

  • Desert9er

Offensive line is looking strong… just held back a Chicago blitz. Alex had all the time in the world and throws a bad pass to a wide open Josh Morgan. Led him too much. What the fuck?

  • Desert9er

Defense is not putting the pressure on the Chicago offense like we did against the Packers.

  • Desert9er

Tie game. Overall the Chicago passing game looks better than ours… Our running game looks better than theirs. Both Defenses not doing very well. 8 drives in this first half and only one of them ended in a punt.

  • Desert9er

WOW, what is WRONG with our special teams? They cannot tackle worth crap right now! Another huge return… 75 yards. Manning again.

  • Desert9er

Nice stand in the red zone! Field goal for the bears.

  • AXEGRINDER

Lovie Smith is a crybaby bitch.

  • Desert9er

TOUCHDOWN JTO TO JASON HILL! Nice pass again…. ok…. after bitching earlier this week about ALL of our QBs, I’m willing to suck it up a bit and say that JTO “sucks less” than the others. Passes look pretty good so far against Chicago’s first team Defense. Alright Marksmen22, let me hear it! :P You’re still a bitch for calling me out though.

  • Desert9er

Ok, fuck… special teams finally comes through. Force fumble, niners recover!

  • Desert9er

Alex Smith is in at QB.

  • Adam

Still at work, but hard to argue with JTO. Even if the Bears are awful on D, he’s 7/8 and mixed it up to a bunch of WRs. Questions for those watching:

    how does line look?
what happened to Johnson and Battle?

  • Desert9er

JTO : 7/8 completions… 128yards, 1TD. Announcers are saying they have no idea why JTO was pulled already.. “Maybe they have seen enough?”

    Keasey looks pretty good.

  • Desert9er

Adam, line looks great. QBs are having a lot of time to throw. Gore and Keasey look really good. Vernon was sweet on his catch. Bruce looks comfortable. I was focusing on the QB too much so I didn’t get a good look at who is lining up… but I have not seen Battle or Johnson. I have only seen Jason Hill and Isaac Bruce.

  • Desert9er

Defense is looking pretty good as well but they gave up some points… special teams did give up a shit load of yards though.. not fair.

  • Adam

Shit, the rate the 9ers have been going, take him out and make sure he doesn’t get hurt.

  • Desert9er

Alex Smith’s passes so far are on the money. But the team has only moved about 20 yards. Keasey is taking a lot of hand offs at the fullback position. And looking good carrying.

  • Desert9er

Incomplete pass from Smith to Hill… looked like Hill’s route was cut off.. Smith’s pass was to the corner of the end zone. Hill didn’t make it there, again his route looked like it was cut off by the defender.

  • Desert9er

Eww… yuck. 3rd and goal. Alex scans the field, everyone’s covered. He swings out of the pocket (right) and looks…. throws a duck into coverage. Not picked off though and got a holding call on the defense so 1st and goal. Next play is a run and TOUCHDOWN!

The pass from Alex did not look good… JTO had a similar situation which resulted in that long TD pass to Hill.

  • Desert9er

Niners are up 20 to 10… and it looks like Chicago’s first team D was still in there. We’re now 4 minutes into the 2nd quarter.

  • Desert9er

Nolan says they have not decided on the starting quarterback and that JTO was pulled early to see Smith with the first team offense. He said they will pick the QB after tonight.

  • Desert9er

Troy Aikman: “it’s safe to say that Mike Nolan is an honest guy….”

    Uhh…. yeah……….

FUCK… Defense, broken coverage… 55 yard pass. Orton’s passes look better than JTOs.

  • Adam

Given the way JTO played, Alex better have a good quarter. I don’t think the first string offense stays out for much longer. I don’t think you can make all of the last series since it was short to begin with, duck notwithstanding.

  • Desert9er

See, the problem is that we have been conditioned to accept MEDIOCRACY from our QBs. I’m sitting here thinking, “Hmm… JTO’s passes don’t look that bad. And Smith’s passes don’t look that bad (minus the duck into the endzone).” … but Kyle Orton’s passes look much better than either JTO/Smith and he’s more decisive. And that’s Orton who doesn’t hold up to any of the elite QBs…… very sad day.

  • Adam

Lotta good teams with mediocre QBs. Some have even gone all the way.

  • Desert9er

Yup, I agree Adam. Last series was short…but boy, was that a DUCK to the end zone.

  • Desert9er

Yeah, a lot of teams do, but what I’m saying is that our QBs look worse than Orton, a mediocre QB. Another awesome through from Orton for a bears touchdown. Ouch.

  • Desert9er

Oops… *throw* .. typo in my last message.

  • Desert9er

First punt of the day for either team…. LAME.

  • Desert9er

LMFAO…. Booming punt from Andy Lee… Hester takes it in the endzone, comes out, then is tackled inside the endzone. The officials said he never came out of the end zone… replays show that that’s BULLSHIT. He had two feet in the field of play.

BUT, Nolan cannot challenge.. he used up all his timeouts. LAME!

  • Desert9er

Hmm.. Defensive backfield is starting to get torched. Orton is hitting most of his receivers with nice passes.

  • Desert9er

Bears kick off out of bounds… Alex Smith gets it on the 40 yard line. 41 seconds left but no time outs… here we go.

  • Desert9er

Nice pass from Smith to Hill. 12 seconds left… 25 yard line.

  • Desert9er

Smith throws behind an open receiver… incomplete pass. 6 seconds left. Field goal.

  • Desert9er

Ouch, BLOCKED. Half time. Wow, he has to follow up the nice pass to Hill with a bad throw and now a blocked field goal.

Alright, I’m done spamming you guys. Gotta go.

  • Tim

    JT > Alex tonight PERIOD!!!!!

  • FaStRmAn

Alex Smith is not very good. JTO had a good game. Some nice throws, some not so nice. But he was effective. I hope they fix the special teams so that when the other teams offense gets the ball, they are not starting on our end of the field. The defense did not play well either. No pressure or sacks in this game. Orten had forever to pass. Hope they can generate some kind of pass rush before the season starts. Other than that, not a bad pre season game.

The secondary made some big mistakes, but they could be resolved by Goldston starting….if he isn’t injured. We continue to make the injury list longer with each game. Goldston, Rossum, and Ulbrich got injured in this game. We need to stay healthy. At this rate we are going to be a really banged up team by week 7. JTO just looked better than Alex Smith…..I don’t like saying it , but facts are facts. Also, our pass rush could have been a little better. We need to cure Jason Hill and Vernon Davis of that disease that DJAX left them before he left. All in all the niners had a good game, but they need to have a little chat with special teams.

  • marksmen

Tonights game wasnt bad at all, i had fun watching it the first quarter was pretty dam good, jto looking to be the starter for the 49ers for sure, i hope they trade alex smith or release him we dont him anymore, tht will create alot of cap space and well probably get some very good players in the next off season. Jto looks very promising Avg 15.8 yards, a passer rating 158.3, in the first quarter!!!8 passes for 7 completions not bad at all. Our defense linemen couldnt get through to sack orton but sacked jto 1-1 on both sides, o-line looks very good this season, So far the 49ers look alot better offensively compare last season. In a way this game will make everyone better and more wiser once they look at the film and practice more. I think the 49ers will improve alot more the next pre-game agaisnt the chargers

  • marksmen

btw fuck u deserter and go fuck urself!lol haha :)

  • Desert9er

LOL, yeah yeah, fuck you too! :) After digesting the game, I’ll ease up on JTO but my criticism still stands for Smith and Nolan.
