The 2008 NFL Draft is officially behind us and the 49ers drafted defensive line, offensive line, wide receiver and secondary. The consensus on the draft is that the picks were safe, and most of the grades are around the C+ range.
- Mel Kiper gives the 49ers a C+
- According to McCloughan the 49ers did not take a WR until round six because “we’re not good enough to draft for need”
- Word on Spikes is 50-50. They will touch base with Spikes soon. Heading into the draft there was a strong chance that Spikes would probably be signed if they didn’t draft an ILB. Although Grant was drafted and is set to compete at the ‘ted’ spot. His drafting doesn’t affect the Spikes situation.
- 49ers had offers to move back in the draft three times. Rounds four, six, and seven.
Rachal was the first USC guy drafted by 49ers since DE Israel Ifeanyi (now let’s hope he works out better than Ifeanyi did) - The 49ers were contemplating a receiver in round 2, when asked Martz said he preferred Chilo Rachal over that receiver.

Martz is going to prove himself…the best part is that NO ONE thinks that the niners will be good so they won’t be scouted hard. We will catch people by surprise. By the way did you read about Chris Cooley calling out Vernon Davis and saying he is overpaid for what he has done in the league. I have to agree to a certain degree. He isn’t Antonio Gates no matter how you slice it….he COULD be, but so far he has shown me he has everything EXCEPT THE HANDS.

Martz says he has been thrilled working with receivers Jason Hill, Bryant Johnson and Ashley Lelie in the days leading up to this camp.
So when I asked if he had any problem with Scot McCloughan and Nolan passing on wide receivers in the first three rounds of last weekend’s draft, Martz gave me a soliloquy on the greatness of the 49ers’ draft approach.
But this is an offense without a No. 1 receiver, being turned over to the man who loves to throw it, and yet the only receiver taken was Josh Morgan in the sixth round.
Is Nolan right? Is Martz by himself the sole necessary offensive upgrade for a team that scored only 217 points last year? (Psst: Martz’s Rams scored 503 points in 2001.)
“I certainly appreciate that,” Martz said of Nolan’s words. “The thing I would say is that I think there are some guys that really are just in a position to step up and be counted on – Ashley and Jason and (Bryant Johnson).
“We brought in Isaac Bruce. . . . What more do you want? These guys have played in the league, played at a high level. Now you want a first-round pick? No, we didn’t need that. There’s enough there that I just feel good about. I don’t think that’s an issue. I’m excited about those guys.”

west..im confident Martz has the right plan for our offensive attack..not to confident about alex..same with shaun hill. i hear martz’ offense is one of the hardest offenses to grasp. this will be alex’s 4th different OC right? im going to keep a close eye on him and shaun to see whos grasping the offense better. ill try to make atleast 3 training camps this year and give you my input.
Smith knows he better perform or thats it for him. He also knows that he’s got two capable QBs on his heels for his job. He didn’t feel that kind of pressure with washed up Trent Dilfer as the #2. It’s put up or shut up time NOW. Smith is also a smart mutherfucker so I don’t think grasping the offense will be a problem, besides the terminology is similar to Turner’s offense.
I’m still holding hope that Smith is the QB that will take us to #6. He’s got all the tools necessary to get the job done. With the proper coaching, I’m confident he’ll succeed. And if he succeeds, the 49ers will succeed. It’s that simple.

i got pissed off as well when i saw deseans name being called by the eagles. then i thought to myself: what if they are thinking more dowm the line and are waiting for something big to happen. i remember the cards saying a couple of years ago they wouldnt pay big money in free agency and then they went after the edge. we just have to be patient and maube we will get someone like chad. i bet hed like to play with bam bam.
Although we didnt get Desean I really like aquisition of undrafted FA Cam Colvin he looks really good. Just putting it out there but I think we jumped the gun on Marcus Maxwell why was he cut I thought he had potential especially after tearing it up in NFL Europe.

hey I need an opinion, Could our defense be good enough to break the confidence of our offense. 3 consecutive interceptions, course they were off of tiped passes, but. Hopefully it will strengthen our offense, but when the offense gets beaten constantly. that can’t be good.
It’s just practice, so I doubt if they’re making too much out of it. When you have INT’s off of tipped passes, I think the defense deserves credit for scrapping for the ball. The QB’s are still learning the offense, so tipped passes are going to happen (hopefully not too frequently).
Our offense was last in the league last year, so it’s probably going to take a little more than one minicamp to show some improvement, but I’m confident they’ll be MUCH improved by the time the season begins. We’re all counting on it.
Lion’s Roy Williams as a 49er? I think I could live with that.
