  1. AXEGRINDER says:

I just wish the draft would hurry up and get here already. All this speculation of WHO we’re going to pick and who’s going to be available WHEN we pick is driving me nuts.

  2. AXEGRINDER says:

At least I got the Warriors to take my mind off it.

  3. West says:

Many on this site believe the 49ers should make drafting a nose tackle a priority. However, Isaac Sopoaga and Aubrayo Franklin performed well last year in stopping the run, which is the nose tackle’s main job.

I’m trying to get some figures on how well the 49ers stopped the inside run, but I think it would show they did it well. Overall, opposing teams averaged 3.8 yards per carry against the defense. Only Washington and Minnesota were better.

  4. Ryan the 1st says:

I really don’t think that this list means much except for a ploy to make other execs think about what the niners are going to do. Malcolm Kelly did have a bad pro day, D. Jackson might make sense (even if he is a shrimp), but the top two people on that list….Merling and Harvey will be no where in sight when the niners pick. Dixon is an interesting visit. I hope they are going to be stupid and try to make him a receiver…..they don’t have three years to wait for that.

  5. Mike says:

I really think a WR for Smith should be the priority. What do you think 49ers fans?

  6. Samra says:

I heard that Quentin groves had heaert surgery for irregular heart beat and this may weigh on his draft status

  7. Willis_69 says:

Malcolm Kelly would be a sweet pick-up.

  8. Medford says:

Yeah if we pick up Dennis Dixon they better use him as a QB because he is pretty good. Probably if he didnt get hurt he would be a 1st round pick this year.

  9. Los Banos Jerry says:

Hey Mike you know who I like Andre Caldwell…….Not that it will
help on the field. But they could go down to Mexico and work on there moves.

Medford Dixon in the 7th why not, he could be used as a slash, while
learning how to QB. Some people think that the niners should give
QB’s 5 years to develope. (Alex Smith)

Ryan good point;;; I wonder how many people they drafted that they
brought in for a visit in years past. Tom Brady came in for a visit
and they passed on him 6 times that year. Talk about a QB that has
got it done without WR’s. Except for 2007.

  10. MSouza says:

i’ve never heard the name cameron colman before lol. I think they are bringing in Harvey and Merling just in case they slide. I remember last year Mcloughan said in an interview that they had a plan for every possible scenario in the first round even if Calvin Johnson slid all the way to 11. I think its good to do your homework on Harvey and some of the other guys, because if they end up falling to us, other teams might have a reason for letting them pass that we weren’t aware of.

  11. MSouza says:

    *Colvin

  12. Los Banos Jerry says:

Dixon is gonna be interviewed on the Mike & Mike show this morning,
    about changeing positions.

  13. Los Banos Jerry says:

There is a great article about the 9ers QB situation, at http://sfo.scout.com/2/745134.html

  14. R,Craig33 says:

I hope they make some very smart and wise choices and it will be very nice if all our draft picks turn out to be stars but I guess every fan and coach hopes for that too but lets make these count I’m tired of watching videos of what we once was it’s crazy because I wore my niners jacket and I heard somebody behind me say the 49ers? when the last time they made the playoffs? but they knew I had on headphones so lets make these picks count it’s already bad enough that we got a draft pick taken away from us on some bullshit for real regardless if it was ony a 5th rounder or not and had to switch 3rd rounders for that shit but I have a really good feeling that we’re going to benefit from that that’s my gutt feeling.

  15. Ninersfan52 says:

Let’s get a big time reciever. There’s gotta be one in that draft that is big time

  16. Bud says:

Just to let everyone know… WR Cameron Colvin from Oregon is from De la Salle High School. Back when I was a sophomore at DLS, he was the star receiver. If anyone wants to look it up, he was a 5 star recruit. The reason why he isn’t a big name here is because he had a very injury plagued college career. So, getting Colvin would bring him home back to the Bay Area, and we could have a nice big steal.

  17. Mike says:

Actually they are saying Merling could slide due to a sports hernia. It’s apparently scaring some teams off. He would fit in as our OLB.
Harvey won’t be there though. Not unless he were to get injured btwn now and the draft and take a big slide.
Idk who the other person posting as mike is however just so not confused as myself. I have said all along that Oline is and should be top priority. And I’m actually kind of surprised that there really is no Olinemen coming in With the exception of 1 center. who is a 2nd day pick.
And west Sopoaga is going to be playing end this season. Manusky already came out and said that. So that leaves Franklin and Fields at NT. I don’t think Franklin is terrible but i think he is a better backup then starter. Which is why I think could use an upgrade there. I’m not saying a first or 2nd round pick. However a 3rd or 4th rounder wouldn’t be terrible.
I also just have this feeling that at some point in the draft we will trade back an pick up an extra pick or 2. Where and what pick i have no clue. Just have that feeling. This is a deep draft in a few positions. That is purely my feeling on it.

  18. josol21 says:

I know this already happend and theres nothing we can do but ive been thinking about something lately…Why did the Bears get to swap 3rd round picks with us… First of all they did not lose Lance Briggs to the 49ers..their franchise was not harmed what so ever in this tampering case…so why should the chicago bears benefit at all from our punishment.. it should have been just roger goodell punishing the 49ers and thats it. Its unfair to let the bears move up in the draft a couple of slots because they accused us of tampering with briggs..even when they were about to trade him here.

  19. jay says:

Man O man. I hope we replace Mr. Glass Jennings in the draft. I really do hope we get some excitement this year and draft a good receiver. Maybe super Mario will be there in the second round or Mr. I had a terrible pro day kelly. Please Lord I cant have another year with out post season play. We need some impact players and I hope we draft well and Mike Martz runs the ball you think this guy was coaching flag football the way he calls plays

  20. Adam says:

    cool

  21. Mike says:

Now while I’m not for this I would wonder what some peoples views are. So Gonna throw this out there just if anything to spark some conversation.
If lets say Mayo LB from Tenn. Or a possiblity could be Conner LB from Penn. State. In the 2nd. I mean Willis and Conner in middle would be a hell of a combo at ILB for years to come. While I am in no ways for this. B/c we have needs in other areas that need to be addressed first. It’s something interesting to talk about and consider for a moment. Conner could be BPA in round 2 if he’s there. And I hear a lot of people talk about taking BPA in each round. And In 3-4 he’s in middle with “Bam Bam” Willis(love that nickname) and if we switch to 4-3 in series can still keep him in just slide him to OLB. He has experience at both LB spots in college.

  23. Los Banos Jerry says:

Mike:::: Phillips (Safety) also. I’ve said this before, and would also lke to see what others have to say. If the top 5 OL are gone.
Groves, Merling, Harvey, Balmer are gone. Thomas, Kelly, Sweed are
gone. The 4 top corners, Jenkins, McKelvin, Cromartie, Talib.

Alot of fans, are thinking position rather than value. We can get
the other areas of need later, in the 3rd or 4rh rounds. OL, WR are
very deep. The 9ers won’t force a pos player of need into a draft
spot, if the value doesn’t merit it. Most draft-niks have Conner,
Mayo, and Phillips in the top 20. If they should drop, we have to
    upgrade,based on value.

For example if 1 of those 3 are there in the 1st. We try to trade back a few spots. Grab him then go for Cherilus or Nicks at 39. If
there gone. Trade back a few spots and get Caldwell,Doucet, or Calais Campbell. Then if we don’t get our OT yet we get Hills, or
Cousins with an added 2nd rounder or our 3rd. If we get OL in the early 2nd, then we go WR in the late 2nd or 3rd with Douglas, Avery, Royal.

If we go OL and WR 1st and 2nd then we can go Avril, Rubin, or Bell
    late 2nd or 3rd.

The draft only has aobut 16 or 17 true 1st rounders value wise. The
next 50 are all 2nd round talent. Its very important to trade back
our 29th and 39th a little bit, (example 29 for 34 and 39 for 44, and possibly dump our 4th. We need another pick between 45 and 60.

If we can get 4 picks in the top 75. We have a very good cahnce by
mid season of having 4 starters. then with a few prayers and some
decent QB play. MAYBE………….Wild Card……Go NINERS

  24. ninerfaithful says:

if groves or someone bad ass is not there at 29 we trade out and gain some more picks in second and third rounds of this draft we could really overhaul the o line and d line

  25. Mike says:

I would love the idea of trading back with our first actually. trade back with a team like baltimore or atlanta who may be looking to jump miami for a qb. Since i think Miami is going Jake long or chris long with first pick. Atlanta could skip on Ryan and then look to trade up in late first to grab brohm. Atlanta Ideally would be great trade partner could give them our first for 2 of their 2nd’s. Like the 34th and 48th picks. that drops us back 5 spots and we pick up an extra 2nd rounder. or even 37th and 48th. Now add in fact that we have our 2nd at #39. Thats 3 picks in 10 selections in 2nd round. and 2 are early in 2nd.. there is a lot of talent that could be there for us in the 2nd round. As draft is deep in talent in quite a few spots.
Now again this is me just throwin things out there.
But I see Jerry would like philips if he would fall to second. And would upgrade FS right away no doubt about that. Just curious what are some players that Realistically could fall that you would be interested in with 2nd round pick. Not going off of need or anything just off of a player with talent that you think could be good/great. Who would be some you would be interested in selecting?

  26. Los Banos Jerry says:

These are the 3 or 4 players I would be happy with.
If we stay at 29 Groves, Williams OT, Phillips.
If we trade back to about 34 Cherilus, Mayo, Conner.
If we stay at 39 Balmer, Campbell, Cason, Talib.
If we trade back to 44 Caldwell, Lawrence Jackson DE, Nicks OT.
If we are at 49 Laws, Avril, Talib (busted for pot)
If we are at 54 Henderson OLB, Avery, King.
If we are at 59 Morgan, Flowers, Hardy (Beats up girlfriends & sons)
If we are at 64 Dre Moore, Rachal, Doucet.

In the 3rd round from 65 to 75 there 2 players Tony Hills OT and
Rubin that I think will be great starters for years to come.
Its all about slotting the players in value groups, not need. The
Niners have there board all set up and I can’t wait to see it unfold

This years class of legit 2nd rounders goes from about 17 until 70.
So if we can trade back with 29 and 39. And trade up with 75th and
107th. We could end up with no 1st, 3 seconds, and a high 3rd.

Because its a make or break season for Nolan don’t be surprised if
we trade next years 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. To take advantage of the talent of the players available this year.

So with that all said there are alot of 2nd rounders. T5he 4 players
I think which will have the biggest impact are. Phillips, Caldwell,
    Mayo, & Conner.

  27. West says:

So if the 49ers don’t get Groves, who else can they select who can help their pass rush? There are a few options:

    1. Cliff Avril, Purdue, 6-2, 253. Avril was the best edge rusher at the Senior Bowl and he gave the North squad’s tackles, including Gosder Cherilus, a tough time during pass-rush drills. Avril’s a very good athlete with an array of moves. What he lacks is size and power. The 49ers probably could get him in the second round.

    2. Lawrence Jackson, USC, 6-4, 271. Jackson, of course, was a defensive end at USC and only stood up a few times for the Trojans. Still, some teams are looking at him as a 3-4 linebacker and his combine numbers showed he has good speed and athleticism. He appears to have a similar body type to Moore and the Giants’ Mathias Kiwanuka – players who were switched from defensive end to linebacker. He’s another guy the 49ers could pick up in the second round.

  28. Mike says:

In case anyone cared. The San Francisco 49′ers waived WR C.J. Brewer. today.. Practice squad guy. no one big but was something that happened at least.

  29. Mike says:

I actually like Marcus Howard from georgia, Shawn Crable from Michigan, wouldn’t be bad options either at OLB. be there in 3rd more likely. Howard actually ran a faster 40 at combine then Groves.
Jackson wouldn’t be a bad pick up though. If he could show speed and ablity to be able to drop back if need be then could be nice pickup if he’s there for us in 2nd.
Avril I don’t know much about. Haven’t really read alot about him. But if he’s got a high motor and can get to qb then all for it.

Also read about this sleeper pick on http://www.eastcoastsportsnews.com/2008draftnews.html

Liberty DE/OLB Vincent Redd is flying under the radar on the internet, but not on some NFL teams boards…Redd signed with Virginia coming out of high school, but transfered to Liberty after playing in just 10 games for the Cavaliers…Redd dominated his competition at Liberty and posted 63 tackles and 13.5 sacks this past season playing as a rush linebacker in Liberty’s 3-4 scheme…Cleveland Browns GM Phil Savage was among representatives from nine NFL teams that attended his pro day workout and came away impressed, as Redd ran his forty in 4.54 and 4.63, recorded a 39.5 inch vertical jump, a 9-10 long jump, and did 13 reps at 225 on the bench …Redd was measured at 6-5.4 and 263…Redd is a bit of a project at this time, but has the size and athleticism that coaches love to work with and develop…Teams that play a 3-4 scheme and are looking for a rush linebacker will be targeting this prospect, possibly as early as the fourth round of the upcoming draft.

Just nice to read about some sleeper guys that we really don’t know about that could be late round steals.
