Niners & Smith Agree on a Deal
The 49ers and DE Justin Smith (Bengals) have reached an agreement, but nothing has been signed. Deal is believed to be $32.5 million in the first four years of the contract, overall 6-years, $45 million. The signing of Smith immediately improves the 49ers horrid pass rushing defense. Smith was the fourth overall pick back in 2001. During his seven year career Smith has recorded a total of 43.5 sacks.
Smith’s signing also fills a void on the line with the retirement of Bryant Young and most likely loss of Marques Douglas.

Don't miss any of the action this year at the SBG Global
ok i did some search and came up with this…..Fast, furious free-agent activity grounds to halt
While the Niners’ surprising flurry of early free-agent signings was relatively cost-effective — aside from the “Big Fish,” ex-Bengals DE Justin Smith, who we hear will receive $20 million guaranteed in his six-year deal worth up to $45 million — don’t look for the team to make any more free-agent moves of note. We hear the team has just enough cash at present to cover its 2008 rookie pool and will concentrate almost extensively on the draft for the next 7-8 weeks. As for Smith, there are some close to the team who questioned the team’s expenditure for a defender who managed just two sacks last season, but that’s definitely not the case with one of PFW’s sources, who became a lot more impressed with Smith last weekend after watching the game tape of his performance vs. the Niners in Week 15. “He looked incredibly strong,” one team insider told PFW. “He consistently collapsed the pocket, and on the 63 plays I counted him being involved in, he was never on the ground. He’s a lot better physically than Marques Douglas, who is much more of a finesse player.” Our source tell us Smith said an elbow injury that limited his pass-rush ability and the Bengals’ defense — which made it difficult for him to get single coverage from opposing blockers — were in great part responsible for his low sack total in 2007. It’s been widely assumed that Smith’s signing pretty much closes the door on re-signing Douglas, but we hear the undersized-but-effective veteran run-stuffer could still be very much in the mix if he doesn’t get any offers to his liking from other teams.
Do yall think there is any chance we trade up to get 2 1st round picks like they have done in the past 2 years
McCloughan said they are not going to trade to get more picks this year. We have 7 picks this year and we’re going to need all of ‘em. He said we’re in position to grab the best players available, which is a good thing. After all these free agent signings, we’re still 20 million under the cap, if you can believe that shit.
I still don’t understand why The stupid ass Raiders gave Kwame “the human false start penalty” Harris all that money. That guy isn’t worth a squirt of piss. The Raiders are idiots and they’re owner should be in the nuthouse.
eagles cut spikes any other people think we should at least bring him in for a visit ?
We won’t trade up, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t trade a pick of next season for another pick this season, and I am talkin about our first round pick, I think Nolan is desperate and we will get two first round picks by doing that.
I don’t think the 9ers will sepnd the money for Spikes it would be a nice fit to see Spikes,Lawson,Willis and some other schmoe it dosen’t matter it would look nice. But I read that the 9ers are only going to go after an OT for the right price so…..any other word on rumors????an one know if they are intreasted in signing Antionio Bryant?
I heard that we are interested in antonio bryant, but I don’t think we’d bring him in, he hasn’t played in a year, and the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties after every catch had to bother Nolan.
Anybody else think Devin Thomas WR out of Michigan State would be a good fit for the niners in round two, that way we could use the 1st round for a guy like Chris Williams, Vanderbilt, or Gosder Cherrilous, Boston College.
I went to Michigan State so I really enjoyed watching him play this year, but I never saw his name going to us in any of the Mock Drafts till I saw NFL.com’s one, but I don’t think he’d be a first round pick.
Maybe the whole not trading up is another ploy McCoughlan. You guys think so??
Should we go after Takeo Spikes?
NO!
So we are gonna roll with Lawson, Willis, possibly Moore and Tully Banta Shame as our LB core?
Im pretty sure our Linebackers are Lawson, Thomas, Willis, as for the forth spot its up for grabs by current LBs or maybe a late draft pick
To be honest, I know NOTHING about Spikes, but he HAS been to the pro bowl. I don’t know if he would play the ted for us or what not…..Ninersgold….tell me why you say no? I haven’t followed this guy much.
Did Thomas even start for Min? I thought he would just be there for depth. Ryan, Spikes was nice when he was with Cincy, but I don’t see us venturing down that road.
How about trading a second and fourth for Jason Taylor??? Hes old but has about three more years in him what do you guys think?
I wouldn’t give up a 2nd for Taylor. While he is still a great player He is up there in age and most i would give up for him would be a 3rd and a 4th but not in same draft.
Does anyone know if the Niners are showing Taylor any interest?
Taylor is no longer on the block according to Parcells, he said he’s either a Dolphin or he is retired.
Well, at least he is loyal…
jason taylor is dream pick up to us.. mcnolan would never give up a second and fouth round pick for him thats a terry donahue type trade …..
I don’t know, we still have alot of money to spend, and you what they say… money talks and maybe Taylor walks?
Taylor is to old now, he won’t last long and he wants big money, besides it would make us lose our high draft picks they want third and even possibly second rounders for him?
Just because we have extra money doesn’t mean we need to spend it all away.. You do realize that if we don’t spend it this year it will be there next year to extend some of our younger talent and sign other free agents next offseason.
Anyone see that the Seacocks picked up Julius Jones?
julios jones is goin to be the leader, atleast for the next couple of years. he has talent so as frank gore. but my breath says yall well see for a competition for the next years starting position in the 49er scheme
when you look at wat the 49ers have they got great talent on the 0-line you may not agree but they do. David Bass and probably kwame harris (who will start on center next year) could compete for the starting position in the C, maybe take some snaps on the pre season.
and maybe we could give Trent dilfer another chance to compete for the starting qb position. or pick up Qb Bryan Cupito(MNGOPHERS) who is really nailing it he could start for any team even if he is a 7th round pick.If you look at the wr co otherwhise in other words we got the best unit-g starting with wr Ashley Lelie who could be a possible 1 wr. And as for jason hill, hell be ready in 3 years.
if you see we could trade a 4rth round pick or maybe pick up tim rattay who is a possible shaun hill.
ON defence we got tully bantacain who will go to the pro bowl i guarantee. Maybe BY will make the squad for another year, he could play more snaps in the preseason as a 1 team player. Maybe Derek smith could start on nickle too. And maybe put tony parrish as a safety to replace that horrible Mark Roman. And put Jamie Wimborn as a MLB in the 4-3 we will use.
Those should really work out on 3 and 2 schemes, with rotating maybe we could get rid of nate clements and hire cornerback Jimmy williams (our ex-PR) he could really make an impact starting with the blitsez, cb blitzes, and more. we could change to a cover 2 scheme and add the nickle and let play D smith and J wimborn.
Another adittion could be Jim Hostler as qb coach, tho he didnt do much for us last year in the offense, he could fit into the scheme like he used to just like Norv turners, west coast offense.
Mike martz was a terrible pic. He was a ram, lion and now a 49er!
i mean i ant say 2 aint as much as 44!!
Natuzho-Aliento de fer or whatever your name is, you must have been in the twilight zone or something, but most of the guys you mentioned aren’t even on the team anymore. Damn near everything you just said is completely WRONG.
I hope for your sake that that post was some kind of joke. At least you made me laugh my ass off. Get rid of Nate Clements for Jimmy Williams????????
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah what the hell was that I’m not on here to clown anybody but get rid of Nate Clemens for Jimmy Williams and not to mention all the other players you named imagine if we still had those players and shit we’ll be losing like a mutha fucka but I aint trying to clown you doggy.
Please don’t make no more comments like that on here or you will get trashed by alot of us on here but then again it might be too late for you and if so GOOD LUCK!
I just heard Bruce is going to wear #80! I guess the Niners and Jerry gave him permission, but still… that’s going to be too weird.
As long as he is not 81 I think we are cool ya know Erock? Lol
I don’t mind Bruce wearing 80 because he is a hall-of-fame type player who has proved that he can play at a high level. I think he deserves is, but if a guy like Lelie asked to wear 80 then I’d be a little upset.
It’s not our number – it’s Jerry’s. And if Jerry says Bruce can wear it then that’s that. We take it and like it. I for one think it’s pretty fucking cool. Steve Largent, anyone?
I think we should have retired that number by now … i think jerry rice is mr fourty niner and he deserves that his number never be worn again…
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Monday, March 10, they signed unrestricted free-agent WR Antonio Bryant
With his statement, Jerry basically ‘unretired’ his number for Isaac Bruce – voluntarily. I repeat – Jerry can do whatever the hell he wants with that number and our opinions about it won’t matter – thank goodness.
Yo, this fucking story is old, get some new shit. Plenty is going on, what is happening ot this website. Stop Fucking Up.
That was being crass for its own sake. Intellectualize with context.
Jerry…not a whole lot of excitement going on. Aside from Rice saying Bruce can wear his number. Nothing at least worth putting as a feature article.
Y r my messages always under moderation?
The 49ers look to have another sold draft this year, I look for the 49ers to do a little more than you think they will. There’s a lot depth at some positions that we need depth at. So look for Mike Nolan and Mike Martz too make some moves for the players that will help this offence right now Scot will make a lot of calls in the first couple rounds I think but look for Mike and Mike to make some good picks in the late rounds. But I also know that all of them will go for the best player on the board witch is OK in book, all i got to say is im looking forward to this upcoming season I think we will be twice as better to quote a certain GM.
Niners are good next season.
Let’s take a look at the seven drafts when Martz was with the Rams and see how similar those receivers looked, based on the measurables from their respective combine performances:
1999: Torry Holt, N.C. State, first round (6-0, 192, 4.44).
2000: None.
2001: Milton Wynn, Washington State, fourth round (6-2, 207, 4.46); Francis St. Paul, Northern Arizona, sixth round (5-10, 185, 4.45).
2002: Eric Crouch, Nebraska, third round (6-0, 195, 4.47).
2003: Kevin Curtis, Utah State, third round (5-11, 186, 4.42); Shaun McDonald, Arizona State, fourth round (5-9, 169, 4.43).
2004: None.
2005: Dante Ridgeway, Ball State, sixth round (5-11, 212, 4.57).
Also, in 2003, the Rams signed receiver Mike Furrey, who went undrafted in 2000 and bounced around in the XFL and Arena League. When Furrey was coming out of college, his measurables were 5-11, 180, 4.55.
We’re choosing to ignore Martz’s time with the Lions because it’s unlikely Martz had the same kind of influence into personnel. The Lions took Calvin Johnson (6-5, 239, 4.35) with the No. 2 overall pick last year.
* * *
Now, let’s take a look at some of the top receivers in the upcoming draft, according to NFLDraftscout, and see if they fit the so-called Martz profile:
Malcolm Kelly, Oklahoma (6-4, 224, 4:54): Too big, too slow.
DeSean Jackson,Cal (5-10, 169, 4.35): Height not a problem, a little light (durability?), but his speed is great. Pretty good fit.
Limas Sweed, Texas (6-4, 215, 4.55): Size and speed don’t match the profile.
James Hardy, Indiana (6-6, 217, 4.49): Speed is just barely acceptable, but his big body is difficult to maneuver on option routes.
Devin Thomas, Michigan State (6-2, 215, 4.40): A little too big, but his speed makes him tempting.
Early Doucet, LSU (6-0, 209, 4.54): His size is just about right, but the speed doesn’t fit.
Andre Caldwell, Florida (6-0, 204, 4.37): Looks pretty good to me.
Mario Manningham, Michigan (6-0, 181, 4.60): Size is good, but the speed is not up to par.
Earl Bennett, Vanderbilt (6-0, 209, 4.48): Not bad.
Donnie Avery, Houston (5-11, 192, 4.49): Size is about perfect, could be just a tad quicker.
Eddie Royal, Virginia Tech (5-10, 184, 4.39): Very, very intriguing.
Jordy Nelson, Kansas State (6-3, 217, 4.51): Doesn’t quite cut it as far as size and speed.
Lavelle Hawkins, Cal (5-11, 187, 4:59): Ideal size, but wish he were a little quicker.
Harry Douglas,Louisville (5-11, 176, 4.51): A bit on the light, slow side.
Dexter Jackson, Applachian State (5-10, 182, 4.37): Definitely worth a flier in the fourth round.
Keenan Burton, Kentucky (6-1, 201, 4.49): Toward the cut-off point for size and speed.
Will Franklin, Missouri (6-1, 214, 4.37): A little big, but has nice speed).
Of course, none of this takes into account whether the guy can actually catch the ball and play the game . . .
* * *
But perhaps the best addition from last year will be Jason Hill. You might not remember, but the 49ers drafted this guy in the third round last year. He caught all of one pass last year for 6 yards. At the combine, Hill’s measurables were 6-1, 204, 4:32. Sounds like a pretty good fit to me.
I just got off the phone with NFL Network and they have told me that The State of the Franchise For the 49ers will air on march 19th.
( They said it could change if something big happens that day but most likely will air on march 19th’s total access)
Here are the new nubers for some of the new players if you didn’t know they are
1- Ricky Schmitt
10 – JT O’Sullivan
20 – Allen Rossum
29 – DeShaun Foster
48 – Cooper Wallace
60 – Walter Curry
AB83Rules points out that the 49ers.com roster page shows the following numbers have been assigned to new 49ers.
