MMP: Hand the Bears Some Kleenex
First off apologies for not running Monday Morning Punter in a while, but to be honest not a whole lot of news lately come Monday. So I figured I’d scrap the barrel and start MMP back up.
- For those that haven’t read, the Bears are crying because they feel the 49ers tampered with Bears linebacker Lance Briggs and a hearing is scheduled for today to help determine if there was any wrongdoing on the part of the 49ers. (Not sure why they are so butthurt they re-signed Briggs, what else do they want? Brandon Lloyd…oh wait.)
- Ending the D-Jack Project gives the 49ers an additional $4 million in cap room. (Good, more money to look for some Ravens.)
- It’s been four days since Takeo Spikes visited San Francisco and still no word on if he’ll sign. No word on if he even passed his physical. (At this time Spikes still has no other visits lined up with other teams.)
Here is an updated list of comings and goings in Ninerland…
Signed:
- Justin Smith
- Isaac Bruce
- Bryant Johnson
- Dontarrius Thomas
- DeShaun Foster
- JT O’Sullivan
- Allen Rossum
Gone:
- Justin Smiley
- Maurice Hicks
- Darrell Jackson
- Derek Smith
- Kwame Harris
- Trent Dilfer
It’s obvious with the players let go/not re-signed Scot is definitely in charge.

Don't miss any of the action this year at the SBG Global
i just hope we ink in spikes and end up with groves..
If all that goes down the D Fence will be nuts this year ..
on the offense i love the signing of johnson it was good to see the cut on D jax i really think our playoff drought ends this season … Go niners
if you think about it, we actually have allready made some nice moves.signing of Bryant Johnson and Bruce alone makes the offense 10x better.Justin Smith will help out the D line alot and maybe help mentor a nice 1st round pick. The best part of all this is letting go of washed-up and below average players(except Smiley). Now only if we can get Spikes signed!
You guys don’t think Martz would’ve gotten Jackson to old form? Come on it would’ve been nice to see 3-4 wr formation with Jackson Bruce and Johnson. It just shows Nolan contradicting Scott again. I think it was a knee jerk reaction and Jackson will go to another team and tear it up!!!
We need to use our first pick on a WR if Groves isn’t available and there are no QUALITY O linemen left. I understand that we got Bruce and Johnson, but both of those guys are going to be good not great……we STILL don’t have a play maker. I am not expecting a rookie to blow up like Dwayne Bowe, but if we don’t use our first pick or second on a receiver then we might as well go with Jason Hill in the line up. Hopefully, Jason Hill doesn’t get the Djacksonitis like last year. I see us getting Manningham, I know I have said it a million times, but he just had a phenominal pro day for Michigan. Carl Nicks will be available in the second round. If we get him then I say put him at right tackle and move Mr. Glass into center because like it or not Jennings is better than Heitman. Heitman is the weak link right now on the line. Keep an eye on the draft boys (I know you will) because the niners should be looking for STARTERS with their first two picks not GREAT DEPTH. THey have done that the last couple of drafts. We NEED a receiver, WE NEED AN O LINEMAN, and we NEED A PASS RUSH. Time to go after needs not nonsense picks that are going to sit on the bench next season to get “seasoned” for the pros.
By the way, you guys want to know why I say Heitman is the weak link….watch the Seahawks games and watch the Ravens game. HE WAS GETTING KILLED and MISSING A LOT OF ASSIGNMENTS. We need to the interior to know their assignments.
ppl you all are forgetting something…ou WR core has some pretty fast guys..JOHNSON,BRUCE AND FORMER WARRIOR BURNER LELIE WITH BATTLE COMPLEMENTING THEM..thas good rite there but i wouldnt mind getting either manningham or jackson(if he falls to us)
i’m hoping that we that groves with the first pick, the second pick pick laws(from ND), trade nexts 2nd n 6th for a another second round pick to get offensive line man, the third round a wr that can kr/pr, the rest of the draft go depth.
Benjamin, I completely agree! Groves and Laws are difference makers and this draft has good depth at OLINE plus according to the niners they’re guys they can get off the street at OLINE if they half too, so lets just get the best players out there so we can finally get into the playoffs!
Why the hell does everyone say Alex Smith needs a WR and then goes around having us picking freakin defensive players!! I think we need a WR preferably Jackson in the first round. Our defense is not the problem right now!! Its offense!!
Jackson will not be there at the 29th pick and i believe are WR core is looking pretty good right now. If we add grove(pass-rush/starter on our team) and laws(big strong bad ass/starter possibly) to our d-fence it will make it that much better..pass rush=INT sir which will lead to more offensive time..However i do hope that we do get a WR, one that is fast and can handle punts and kick offs in the 3rd round.
Andre Caldwell with our 2nd round pick. Not Jackson, he’s to small for a 1st round pick. I’m starting to think what Mike said makes
since. Albert OG, if he falls past the Steelers, if not Claddy OT. If he’s gone I think we should trade back a few spots, and pick up a high 3rd. Then we go for Baker OT, Nicks OT,or Cherilus OT.
Then with the 39th pick 2nd round take Andre Caldwell WR
With are 2 3rd round selections, we target Laws DT, Demps S, Avril DE, Dre Moore DT.
4th round Josh Johnson QB, or Rubin NT.
5th, 6th, 7th best available.
No way Clady makes it pass 15. He is next best tackle after Long and Jake long won’t make it pass KC at worse. With talks that he could go #1.
Albert could be a pro bowl guard. could also try sliding him out to play tackle as teams feel he could play both.
While I love Laws. and Groves would be a nice pick. I don’t care if we have top 3 def in league if our oline can’t block for gore and can’t let Smith have more then 2 seconds to look down field then Offense isn’t going to do crap and we will be right back to where we were all over again. Caldwell would fit perfect in offense. Jackson may be short but is a dangerous return man and would work great in slot. TO many people put to much emphasis on height. Ask Steve Smith in carolina or Santana Moss about height both are like 5′10 at best. It’s playmakers I want. I don’t care if your 7′ or 5′9. As long as you can catch and get open and make plays when you get ball in your hands.
Also Jerry don’t think we take QB that early if we draft one at all. Picked up Smith’s option and gave Hill his extension. More likely if we go qb we go 6th round or 7th. Still thinkin may end up signing an undrafted one. To have him compete in camp. and then always practice squad guy.
Rubin I like a lot more then Moore.. Rubin is a NT. and that is what this team needs desperately…Moore i think would fit better at end. With Smith locking up one end spot and Sopoaga locking up the other(gave him a deal to play everyday an keep him with team.). I think Mcdonald and Oliver are more then capable backups who are still young.
I’m more worried about our oline then getting another DE. We just Signed one to a huge deal. and Sopoaga got a pretty nice contract too.
Think draft NT not Ends. for Dline..
Either way Oline should be top priority. Then WR then NT then DB
Not only does Alex Smith need a WR he needs a Line too!
