McCloughan Takes a Closer Look at the Anti-Banta-Cain

Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves worked out for pro scouts yesterday, which included 49ers General Manager Scot McCloughan. Groves weighed in ten pounds lighter (249) then he did at the combine (259). More from Matt Barrows.

Groves decided to rest on his impressive combine stats in all categories save the vertical jump. He had a ho hum 29 ½-inch leap in February. He improved that to a more-than-acceptable 35-inch leap today. NFL evaluators take all these measurements with a grain of salt. But for someone like Groves, who is expected to be a pass rusher at the next level, they’ll look at three drills that measure his explosiveness: 1. vertical leap, 2. broad jump, 3. bench press. Groves had a very impressive 30 reps on the bench press last month and leaped 10 feet at the combine. He also ran the 40 in 4.57 seconds.

  1. PrimeTime says:

You’re looking at the #29 pick overall in this year’s draft.

  2. JW says:

he’ll be gone by then…..betting he’ll start moving up draft boards, it’s hard to find pass rushers…..

  3. MSouza says:

He very well might be there, there are quite a few DE/OLB higher then him.

  4. Mike says:

I don’t know if he makes it to our pick. McCloughan was at his workout yes. But so was Mike Tomlin HC for Steelers. Also don’t count out the Cowboys and Phins pulling a deal to Miami to move up to 28 if they like him enough.(trade first pick in 2nd and a late round pick or something). They are going to run 3-4 next season or atleast Parcells wants team to. Groves could be his version of Ware. He could be there but couldn’t be. Right now I think just keeping all options open and I think they are looking harder at guys who they feel are worth that pick and who could be there at our pick.

  5. ninerfaithful says:

i think he will fall to us i think if any trading goes on it will likely be for chris long matt ryan maybe jake long Groves will be a great addition to our 3-4 …. so who do we take in the second round ???????

  6. Mike says:

See and thats the part of the draft i don’t think any trading will be going on. I think Phins unless they take less value for #1 are going to be stuck there. Rams I think are just going to take one of longs whichever doesnt go to Phins. Ryan might as well be in a falcons uni. They need QB most and might be only Qb taken in first round. Everyone else’s qb needs could wait till 2nd. With Phins, ravens, bears, panthers looking at brohm ,henne, flacco, woodson, johnson. I could see trading going on there( as in early 2nd round maybe late first if a team is looking at a particular qb they may want to grab before another teams pick). Although i have read a few places that Parcells is in love with Flacco and may take him with there first pick in 2nd round. I personally like Brohm better then Ryan but thats me. Raiders i think take Dorsey or Ellis. Chiefs could be first team that looks to move down with a team looking to grab mcfadden. Since there biggest need is OT and Clady is a reach at 5.

  7. Billy says:

I prefer a premier tackle like Sam Baker out of USC or Desean Jackson or Rogers Cromartie that guy is just a freakin machine!!!

  8. Ryan the 1st says:

There are two ways of looking at the “Draft Defense First” argument…..we NEED either a OLB or a corner. On this can we all agree? Free safety…..I still think we should wait on Goldston before we spend a first day pick on him (unless an offer is too good to refuse). IF we go olb then that handles Banta Cain’s ineptitude, but we haven’t seen Haralson or Moore enough yet so we could be jumping the gun on that…..one thing for sure is that Banta Cain needs to be a back up until further notice. Also, you could bet on Walt Harris for one more season…..after that it NEEDS to be addressed. I wouldn’t kick up a fuss about them drafting a corner…..I don’t know about our FIRST pick, but who knows. IF we were to get a corner with our first pick then it will Cromartie or Cason……you aren’t paying attention if you think Talib will still be there. This could be a good move because we have Moore and Haralson to fight it out. I AM on Moore’s bandwagon. This would be great also because then the niners won’t be getting BURNED down field like we saw last season…..however you could argue that also could be happening due to the fact that we let the opposing QB take a nap and eat lunch before deciding on who to throw to (no pash rush). It depends on what angle to see it from.

  9. Natuzho-Aliento de fer says:

All the 3-4 schemes are doublized with two OLB that have to get their work done. Tully is just another jamie winborn, he doesnt have the speed to make the play, when the guy comes out you have to salute the guy down, make the play. He doesnt and thats why you have to prepare him, when that happens we have to look at mike nolan’s weekly preperation list and say
    *did he prepare them correctly?
which is wat tully never had and theres no excuse,
man just go wit rod green

  10. Natuzho-Aliento de fer says:

Another point of view from the LB corporation is this, consider this guys:

    we rule

  11. Mike says:

I don’t think cromartie makes our pick. I think he has moved into at the latest early 20’s with maybe dallas. He has worked out way to well to fall to us now. Some have even argued that him and Mckelvin are on same line as far as who’s first DB off board.

Banta Cain was a decent back up in NE we tried him as starter and proved why NE had him as a backup B/C HE IS ONE.

I do like Moore though. Liked him last year when we drafted him and Would still like to give him a chance to prove he can be a solid player. Unfortuantely he was hurt and on IR last season but if healthy this season I’d like to see him take over. But thats a lot of IFS.
For first pick I’m still hoping for one of top tackles to falls. Actually way seems to be right now that Sam Baker from USC might fall to us. Could be a nice pickup and would not argue that one. Thats def an area i think we address early on though.

And i don’t know if everyone realizes this but first day of the draft now is only the first 2 rounds.

  12. Mike says:

This is an Interesting article I found about how Rice is mentoring Jackson from Cal. Don’t think he’d be there with our pick but still an interesting article.

  13. Eli49ers says:

    yea we should get him..
him and p.will would be a great combination.
our d will be unstopable sortta like da ravens a couple of years ago.. maybe.
    =]

  14. red&goldforlife says:

cmon guys,GROVES Definitely 1st or 2nd! our pass rush has sucked for the last…. well for along time we all know that!! The only way our current team gets to the QB is by a all out blitz and most teams know that so they extra protect on us ie, seattle. If we get a better pash rush our defense will improve we will get more turnovers allow less points and give our offense more oppurtunties. I also definetly think our offense will improve just because of the scheme we will be running, if martz gets the right mix out there with our current crop or new crop of recievers teams wont blitz the shit out of us like They did last year because they know they will get burned! plus if they respect our passing game it puts less pressure on our OLINE and we can shove it down there throat with the gore/foster combo!

  15. Mike says:

Our Oline was so bad last year and hasn’t been improved at all this offseason. Actually lost our 2 starting guards in Allen and Smiley. So I don’t care if our scheme is great if they are in the backfield in 2 seconds won’t do us much good.
While we need pass rush we also need WR who fit scheme we will be running but even more important an Oline to provide the blocking to give us time to throw or open up running lanes.
Also need a solid NT to open up some of those blitzing lanes for the LB’s.
I like Groves a lot and think he could be Solid rush end LB that we are looking for but I think we have bigger needs to fill in first 2 rounds. Think someone like a bruce davis or a shawn crable could be there in the 3rd for us. Also Howard the DE/OLB prospect from georgia which i have heard no one really mention could also be a nice prospect to look at around 4-5th round. Had like 10 sacks as a DE at georgia but ran a 4.45 at the combine. Link provided. Also boasted the second be vertical out of hybrid 3-4 ends. Its def someone to atleast think about in later rounds

I just got off the phone with NFL Network and they have told me that The State of the Franchise For the 49ers will air on march 19th.

( They said it could change if something big happens that day but most likely will air on march 19th’s total access)

Here are the new nubers for some of the new players if you didn’t know they are

    1- Ricky Schmitt
    10 – JT O’Sullivan
    20 – Allen Rossum
    29 – DeShaun Foster
    48 – Cooper Wallace
    60 – Walter Curry

AB83Rules points out that the 49ers.com roster page shows the following numbers have been assigned to new 49ers.

  17. ninerfaithful says:

anybody have a updated mock draft ???

  18. Samra says:

The Detroit Lions released OG Blaine Saipaia, look for him to be our cheap OG signing…he spent a couple of years in STL with Martz and the last 2 in detroit again with martz… He is 6′3 315 pounds and 29 years old…he can play all three interior spots just like Tony wragge…

  19. ninerfaithful says:

yeah for us we might get a new guard we sure could use the depth

  20. Jeebus Kriley says:

Why do you guys get on TBC for his inability to rush to passer, and yet you guys are so high on Lawson? They are pretty similar IMO. Weak rush, great coverage ability.

  21. MSouza says:

Because Lawson does have great coverage ability, also Lawson keeps teams guessing. He’s not always going to blitz because he is a great coverage guy, but when he does blitz he gets into the backfield pretty quickly. TBC is only on the field to get to the quarterback and he rarely gets there. Its not all his fault, but really he is a pretty ineffective player with us. I think he’d be pretty descent if we brought him in on third and long or for sure pass packages, but because we really didn’t have anyone else after the Lawson injury he was in there all three downs. He cannot cover to save his life and he is terrible against the run if they run it right at him. I’m for keeping him around and bringing him in to spell players, but I really don’t think he has any business starting.

  22. PrimeTime says:

Tubby Banta-Can’t should be dangled out as trade bait – for a 7th round pick.

  23. P says:

I originally wanted DeSean Jackson or James Hardy. But now I definately want Groves. Especially since we got Bryant Johnson who I didn’t even think we were gonna try to grab. And I wanted him badly. Kinda more than Berrian, especially for the price difference. Though we don’t know exactly where B.Johnson is. All I know is when he has gotten the opportunity he has made it happen. He’s a big body too. Anyhow we definately need a DL pass rusher that guns straight for the QB. Because we got plenty of options on WR now. Although I’m suprised we kept Leile over D.Jack especially since they never gave Leile a shot last year

  24. Merton36GOAT says:

I don’t get it Anti Banta-Cain? What does that mean? That he’s gonna take over Banta-Cain’s position? VEENY VUBBIN ON A HANDSTAND

  25. Niner Pundit says:

Anti-Banta-Cain means he’d probably actually do what he is supposed to a sack the QB. Unlike Tully
