Is Berrian Worth It?

Free agency is set to begin in a little over 14 hours, and one name that has been linked to the 49ers is Bears free agent Bernard Berrian. Reports out of Chicago is that Berrian is looking for a deal that nets $24.5 million over the first three years, and bonuses worth $12 million. The Bears have offered Berrian $8 million in bonus money in a five-year, $25 million package, but apparently that isn’t enough.

Now the question is how hard up are the 49ers for a receiver and if they are that hard up should they throw that kind of money Berrian’s way?

And to think we could of had Moss for a 4th round pick.

  2. Diamond Dave says:

dude Moss would have sucked it uplast year with us.He would have done the same things he did in oakland.Who the hell was gonna throw him the ball?

  3. R,Craig33 says:

Fuck that, all this he was talking about he wants to play for the 49ers if he wants to play for us he would take less money but no I wouldn’t give him 24 million maybe some of us feel different but no I don’t think so.

  4. Forensics187 says:

I feel ya Diamond, but Berrian is not worth what he is asking, and even if he was I don’t think that he is a #1 WR. We still do not have a true #1 WR. A bunch of 3’s, maybe a 2 in there somewhere. We have missed out on many WR’s in the past couple of seasons. Walker, Stallworth, and Bennet all because they are not Nolan guys. What is a Nolan guy, and why aren’t these Nolan guys? Cause they are winners? What the f__k? So now all we have is high ass priced Berrian to save us?

  5. Rob says:

Yeah, if that article from Chicago is correct, Berrian is a little high on himself. He wants an awful lot of money all things considered. While I think Berrian would be great under Martz’s offense, I see him as kind of a boom or bust signing. He could be awesome, or he could suck. He is not a sure thing. He should be treated accordingly when it comes to what kind of money he gets.

  6. Niner Born N Raised says:

Berrian is not worth the money, even if he is a Nolan guy. Stallworth, Walker, Bennet are not Nolan guys for the same reason that Moss isn’t a Nolan guy: he plays when he wants to play. A Nolan guy is one that makes the team better through his skills and character, not one that refuses to play and demands a trade because the team isn’t playing up to par. Loyalty, through thick and thin.

As a SoCal resident I am tempered by all the talk about who to nab during free agency by looking at what has transpired down here with the LA Lakers. All offseason Kobe was ripping the team for not making a play on a big-time free agent. The Lakers waited and waited and then BAM!, they pull off an absolute steal in Pau Gasol that has catapulted the Lakers to the top of their conference even with a vital piece to their puzzle still nursing an injury.

Should a #1 WR not become available in free agency or demand too much money, don’t rule out a move in the trade market during the season. Either that or convert Andy Lee to WR!

  7. ninerfaithful says:

i think we should just stick to the plan and draft a james hardy or limas sweed maybe even a steal with Bowman in the third or fouth round… lets us the cap space to fill holes on defense on o line

  8. Mike says:

I say if the Cards don’t reach a deal with Fitzgerald the Niners should go after him instead of Berrian.

  9. 49ersfan77 says:

hell ya Fitzgerald id look at stallworth too and maby trade for a roy will

  10. Douche Bag says:

Coming from a team that probably has the worst wide receiver corp in the league, why is Berrian not worth it? He is young, this will be his 5th season. His yards have gone up every season, from 200 to 500 to almost a 1,000 last year. Mind you he played for the Bears which has a horrid offense, horrid passing game and a miserable quarterback. Not bad numbers considering. He is also fast, a great deep threat that we are sorely lacking. Pair him with Martz and he could bust out this year if we get our quaterback situation straightened out. Further, first round WR picks are a total gamble! History agrees! I say we sign him and use the first round pick on OL or Cromartie. Again, why is Berrian not worth it?

  11. Douche Bag says:

The real question should be, is Justin Smith or Lance Briggs worth it? Those are far more debatable!

  12. Douche Bag says:

Fitzgerald ain’t leaving Arizona. As for Stallworth, he has been projected to bust out for the past how many seasons? He hasn’t. He won’t.

  13. Forensics187 says:

The Bears had a shitty passing game last year with Berrian. We had a shitty passing game without Berrian. What makes you think he will help us? Not trying to be a dick, but seriously. He is decent, and probably better then anyone we have right now, but not worth that kind of cash. I say put that kind of cash on some incentives contract, and lets do that damn thing.

  14. sdlife says:

I expect 2 key acquisitions at WR before this is all said and done!

  15. Forensics187 says:

Sdlife, anyone you are looking for in particlular?

  16. 49ershopeful says:

Antonio Bryant anybody? i mean really.. someone who can stretch the field, cheap just put a got to keep him under control. oh yeah and now that brandon lloyd is a free agent. i just dont think berrian is all that people are saying.

  17. 49er4Life says:

Dose any think we should sign Larry Fitzgerld??????

  18. Forensics187 says:

If Larry is there, grab him. Noy going to happen though bro.

  19. p dizzle says:

Fitzgerld could def. be a nolan guy, Fitzgerld!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!he can def. be our num. 1

  20. Niner4Life says:

To get Fitzgerald the Niners would have to pick up his contract as it stands. Which is supposedly $14M 2008 and $17.4M 2009, $31.4M for a two year deal. Once he signed then they could negotiate a lower salary or a long term deal but it would still contain the $31.4M. He is not worth it.

As for Berrian, like others are saying, if he wants to be a Niner, take the offer they give him.

  21. 49er_phil says:

Larry Fitzgerald is Definitely a #1 receiver with 100 catches 1400 hundred yrds and 10 td’s now thats production the problem with him is he’s due 30 mill. in the next two yrs from arizona good news though is they can afford to give him up with Bolden on the other side but i dont see the niners gettin in that mix, not saying i wouldnt like to see him in a niner uniform next to Davis instead of Berrian

  22. SupaBo' 95 says:

I saw a comennt about D. Hall at conerback for us but i also dont think he has good character then again i might have my own character issues if i played in Atlanta last year but does anyone no how much asante samuel is gonna command in free agency. and does any one know any info on Jonathan Vilma i saw he didnt play much of last season but i know hes was defensive rookie of the year in 2004 and has been a pro bowl player.

  23. 49er4Life says:

Don’t know about D.Hall but as for Jonathan Vilma word in rumor world He and a I think a 2nd or 6th Round one of the two would be in a package for Saun Rodgers don’t know if that’s true but my wish list would be A Pair of Bears (Briggs, and Berrian) and Justin Smith then I think that would be the biggest upgrade or even a trade for a #1 WR would be nice. Just an upgrade we are a good team we are almost there!!!!!!!

  24. JNova80 says:

Sign Lloyd, Bryant and make a trade for Ced Wil. I really do like C. Wilson.

But seriously, maybe Berrian just doesn’t want to be with the Bears, which is why he might of turned down that deal. Maybe we will see a discount.

  25. Ninerguy says:

Issac Bruce waived by Rams he could bring some credibility to the recieving core and he’s familiar with the Martz offense but as far as Larry Fitzgerald making $31.4 M. over 2 yrs.Berrian is asking for $36.5 M. over 3 yrs. if you included his bonus i dont know to much about salary caps but that doesn’t sound to bad being that he’s proven himself despite having another #1 and i’ve never heard of him complaining seems like a team player aka a “Nolan guy”

  26. P dizzle says:

We’ve already had lloyd, bryant and wilson they didnt work out im tired of all these number 2 and 3 recievers if we want a. smith to work out put the talent around him

  27. john says:

i think berrian would give us a little discount if our offer was atleast close to what we wants since his hometown is near us

  28. JNova80 says:

I was joking about the Lloyd, Bryant and Wilson thing. But I wouldn’t mind having Wilson back, he’s the only one out of the three I somewhat miss. But only if he was a free agent.

  29. Samra says:

Bottom line…we wont be contenders untill the Yorks sell the niners

  30. ninersgold says:

I think we will be a surprising underdog next year, looks like the Niners are trying to go all out, in what may be Nolan’s final year (make it or break it). We are going after a DE Justin Smith, WR Bernard Berrian, and we are going after (still) Lance Briggs. I don’t care if they fit us or not, it doesn’t matter these guys are all good players.

Remember last year, everybody said we were the hot new team that will come and surprise people, well, usually when you say something like that it doesn’t turn out that way and unfortunatley it didn’t. Now that teams know that we are “crappy again” they will think we are the easiest shit on their schedule, and if we have those free agents and another McNolan draft, we will come back with a surprisiing team. We have Martz at OC (the instant top 10 offense maker), our defense continiues to improve, and if we get those FAs than our defense will be pretty stacked. Teams knew we were hot last season and than injuries crushed us to add on our crappiness. I whink we willbe the surprise of the NFL, and Alex SMith (if he starts, will be comeback player of the year. Martz’s offense with our continuing to improve defense (if we can stay healthy) can be a playoff team. Our o-line is bad at pass protection because George Warhop is an excellent RUN BLOCKING O-line coach, now we have Chris Foerester who happens to excel at teaching Pass Protection for the O-line coach. That equals good pass protection and run blocking next season. Our d-line will have Sopoaga back, and he may replace B. Young at DE/UT and we will probaly also draft a NT in the draft (3rd round is good) WE will also draft or go after some pass rushing 3-4 OLBs in draft/FA, but most likely draft, depends on Calvin Pace.

I don’t know why, but for some reason we are attracting big names in Free Agency. Many WRs want to play for Martz, cuz of his known ability to make passing attacks, but I still don’t know, maybe it’s because the Niners were good in the 80s and the players want to play with their fav Team :) Not only that but a lot of football players live in CAL and want to play near home, i guess we can attract names, but hy BIG name agents? Might also be the fact that we have a ton of cap room in the 30 million area.
