Free Agent Reports
8:00 am -49ers and Justin Smith agree on a deal. 6-years $45 million.
6:05 pm -Justin Smith is still in San Francisco. According to Maiocco Smith took a helicopter ride and is set to have dinner tonight with Mike Nolan. No word yet on what entrees they had, but I’m sure it was a nice romantic evening with just the two of them, since he can’t share those candlelit nights with Derek Smith anymore. Reports are that Kwame Harris supplied the background music.
5:03 pm -Adam Schefter is reporting that the 49ers and Isaac Bruce have agreed to a 2-year deal. Maiocco reports the sides are working on a contract but haven’t come to an agreement yet.
4:05 pm -Conflicting reports on Faneca and the Jets. Latest is from Faneca’s agent no deal with the Jets. So there is still hope, little, but still hope.
3:15 pm -Justin Smith has left the building.
2:42 pm -Remove Alan Faneca from the list. ESPN is reporting he has agreed in principle to sign with the Jets, four-year, $32 million deal that includes roughly $23 million in guarantees.,
1:52 pm -Justin Smith is in the building. It’s been confirmed
1:11 pm – FOXSports.com has learned that Bruce is heading to San Francisco for a free-agent meeting with the 49ers, which recently hired Mike Martz as their offensive coordinator. St Louis Post Dispatch reports that Martz contaced Bruce Thursday night and if/when Bruce gets on a plane it will be to sign a deal not just to visit.
1:05 pm – Alan Faneca will not be making any visits to anywhere. Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports is reporting Faneca will assess offers from the Jets, Niners, and Rams, and then sign with one of them on Sunday. He’s expected to receive a deal worth $8 million per year, at a length of four or five years.
12:15 pm – The 49ers have started serious talks with recently released Rams receiver Isaac Bruce. Mike Martz, understandably, really wants him.
- Justin Smith has not arrived at 49ers complex yet. Word is that the 49ers do not want him leaving without a contract. Apparently they are set to go $8 million annually.

This Just in…..from ESPN.com:
The San Franciso 49ers and defensive end Justin Smith agreed to a six-year, $45 million contract that included $20 million in guarantees.
Smith, who had played all of his seven previous seasons in the NFL in Cincinnati, was given the franchise tag by the Bengals in 2007.
Smith was the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Missouri. He has 43 ½ career sacks but managed only two last season. Smith has played in 16 games every season except his rookie campaign when he made 15 appearances.
More puzzle pieces…. some backups… but then a veteran receiver who knows routes and where to be in Martz system… and Smith… welcome to the 49ERS!!!!!!!
J. Smith is a 49er!!!

Jacksonville Jaguars have just released OG Chris Naeole. McNolan better swoop in before some other team does.
It amazes me, that most 9er fans are oblivious, to good football understanding and practice. First, Alex Smith, I’ve been to camps under all of the last three OC’s. A.S has all the tools, but the constant that has raised its head everytime is “Release Timing”. Smith, has an inbred tendency to hold on to the ball to long. Trust me, our old boo cow Martz, is a timing first and all O.C.. Shaun Hill comes in and throws timing routes, and everyone starts calling for Smith’s head, mark my words, when Martz and this kid get on the same page, it will be all good. Issac Bruce, ha ha!! next to Jerry Rice, Bruce is going to be the best route runner that the 9ers have had since Rice, he’s like M.Harrison, Smith is going to learn to throw where recievers are going to be, subsequently won’t take the pounding he has by holding on to the ball too long. Justin Smith, he is like a Pierce Holt, an outstanding pressure DE. He may not sack like Cedric Hardman, but he brings PRESSURE, and pressure breaks pipes. Pressure brings interceptions, sacks are overated, unless you are Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Mark Gastineau, Deacon Jones, or Gino Marchetti, or whoever your fave five is. Trust this, Smith will collapse some pockets. Nolan has made the 9ers better each year he’s been there, with a little pressure up front, watch the 08 9ers, they’ll have one of the top 6-defenses in the NFL. The 9ers should start the season like this: WR> Isaac Bruce, SR>
Arnez Battle, TE> Vernon Davis, make Walker a hybred TE/WR, use Gore or Foster like the Rams used Faulk, there has been Sid Gillman, Don Coryal, Ernie Zampese, and all the downfield copy cat O.C.s since then, like Saunders, Norv Turner, Fassel, etc. But quiet as it is kept, Martz belongs with the first group as an innovator, EVERYTHING works off timing, and learning terminologies, and a strong, 5-man offensive line. The OL to me, is what is going to make or break this offense , not Bruce, not A.Smith, but an offensive line that’s built for running the ball and not holding blocks in the passing game.

By the way I am on the Hill bandwagon too. Just check out the begin of this youtube video of Alex Smith it was his rookie debut I believe,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84QXHUcfSQY
am I wrong or doesnt Alex show virtually no improvement since his debut? I mean just look at his decision making, holding on to the ball to long, overthrowing, getting rid of it too quick, throwing int’s and just looking plain scared. Dont get me wrong he has had A game or two where he does well but all in all to me he is the same quarterback and I dont care how young you are this is a “what have you done for me lately” league and Alex has not shown enough! I see no improvements look we have a history of great and good quarterbacks and my opinion this guy just doesnt have that IT!
Hill came in against the vikings and immediately started making plays plus his mechanics and reads are way better than Alex. Hill just looks comfortable out there like he knows what he is doing if you see some of the clips from the tampa bay and cincy game

he immediately just starts going threw his progressions as soon as the ball is snapped. I just think Hill has “IT” the intangibles to lead us to the playoffs and Alex dont but that is just my opinion!
