Briggs, Smith, and Berrian, oh My
Oodles of Niners rumors swirling around today. Up first Lance Briggs. Word out of Chicago is that Bears are pursuing tampering against San Francisco, as they are suspecting the 49ers already have a deal with free agent linebacker/Bay Area native Lance Briggs.
Pro Football Talk is reporting that the 49ers are making a run at Bengals Justin Smith.
Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, citing an unnamed source, reports that the 49ers already are working on a contract for defensive end Justin Smith. Last week, it was reported that the 49ers currently face tampering allegations regarding Bears linebacker Lance Briggs.
In regards to Bernard Berrian, Fox Sports is reporting that he wants to play for the 49ers.
Some teams are wondering why the Bears didn’t place the transition tag on WR Bernard Berrian in order to at least see what kind of contract offers he receives. Sometimes teams cut players loose, figuring the money is going to be too expensive. But there’s nothing wrong with protecting your investment a little and matching it. Berrian keeps talking about wanting to play for the 49ers.

There is alot of talks.. The foster Talks.. These guys and that allen rossum.. I dont believe anything till I see it say SIGNED.. If we get Half of them we are better off.. even tho we have enough money to Sign them all… But The 9ers office said they wont be huge players in the FA like last year.. Truth or Stratagy??? Dont let people know who your interested in.. Who knos.. All I know is.. DL WR DL WR DL WR DL WR DL WR.. And on a quick note.. how good does that draft trade last year look this year.. NOT one SUPER standout in this draft.. we can get the same value for what we need at where we are at that we could at the 7th pick.. Crap Im ranting now.. Im out lata

I would be fine with all three of these signings. I just hope the Niners aren’t overspending here…
I just think it is hypocritical of the Bears to call us on this when THEY HAVE DONE IT themselves. It isn’t our fault that they were stupid enough to not sign their best receiver and one of their best defensive players. As for Justin Smith…..sign him…..it would be money in the bank to have him. Just remember Soap….I don’t think the niners will resign him because there WILL BE some stupid team out there that will OVERPAY BIG TIME because he is the only DT that will hit the market. If that is the case and Soap is asking for the moon and then starts then let him go. Sacrafices like this are sometimes painful, but necessary for the long haul.
Various news sources are reporting players that the 49ers may show some interest in this week, whether it be on Thursday, the start of free agency, or sooner for those players that were cut by other teams.
RB DeShaun Foster
ESPN’s John Clayton expects the 49ers to sign free agent running back DeShaun Foster “in the next couple of days.” San Francisco was quick to contact Foster after he was cut last Thursday. The Niners would reportedly use him as a complement to Frank Gore, but he’d be the biggest threat for carries Gore’s faced since Kevan Barlow in ‘05.
DE Justin Smith
Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com is reporting that the 49ers are negotiating with defensive end Justin Smith.
WR Bernard Berrian
John Czarnecki of ESPN states that Chicago Bears wide receiver Bernard Berrian keeps talking about wanting to play for the San Francisco 49ers. Could this mean that there have been initial talks to acquire the unrestricted free agent? ProFootballTalk.com listed Berrian as a player that may already have a deal in place. Although, they did not say with whom.
WR Muhsin Muhammad
According to ESPN, the 49ers are one of three teams that may be interested in acquiring the services of wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad. ESPN states that he “would likely fill the slot in San Francisco, as Mike Martz needs speed and quickness outside.” The other teams that may be interested are the Redskins and Panthers and ESPN seems to feel that a spot in Carolina would make the most sense.
WR Javon Walker
According to the Denver Post, the San Francisco 49ers are one of nine teams that are expected to at least inquire about a trade for Denver Broncos wide receiver Javon Walker. The other teams include Tampa Bay, Dallas, Washington, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Chicago and the New York Jets.
LB Lance Briggs
Various rumors that the 49ers are interested in linebacker Lance Briggs. However, the NFL is currently investigating charges that the 49ers tampered last season making overtures to the linebacker.

I am not sold on the Niners signing both Briggs and Berrian. The defense was solid last year, but the main issue the D had was there was no pass rush. Instead of getting another linebacker, I think the money would be better served to get a pass rusher.
Also, I don’t see Berrian as head and shoulders above some of the other busts we have signed (Bryant, Lelie, Jackson, etc.) and we all know how those signings worked out.
I think the Clements and Lewis signing slast year were great additions, but the amount of money that Briggs will require, i think is too much.
I am getting so wet over this news, that I may have to douche by weeks end. If all this goes down, what about using the first pick for the OL?

Save the cash and avoid overpaying for Briggs. Willis is the Def play maker all we need at the ILB is a stuffer. A guy that is willing to take on a blocker to allow Willis to make the play.
Smith is a must.

Berrian,Justin Smith,and Calvin Pace along with signing Sopoaga to a five year deal and signing allen Roosum and getting Deshaun Foster. Who are we the fckn New York Yankees.We cant get all of them. Who do we take.

Skip signing Briggs!! Way too much money for a position that we already have a stud at (What you talkin bout Willis?!) We only need one tackling machine. Sign Smith and Soap. Berrian would be fine if the money is no more than what Lelie is getting (if he is going to play). The D and O lines are our greatest weaknesses and areas of biggest need. No other positions should be focused on as much as these. We need to keep our QB’s standing and the opponents laying flat which is all done by upgrading our lines.

Calvin Pace would be icing on the cake……I wouldn’t complain if we signed him too.

He plays olb. And would take Banta Pain in the asses spot. Banta Cain sucks ass after a hard days work.
I think Nolan would want to move Pace to the ILB area if we acquired him, he is 6′4″ 275, so he would be a ridiclous TED LB, he can play either I think, he is just listed as a LB in the Cards Website, and others are more specific on their website as to whether inside or out, my guess is he plays both or can at least play both.
I just read a rumor yesterday about pace but can’t remember what site i read it from. Basically said that pace was saying that he was only going to sign with one of 3 teams. and those teams were believed to be the jets, dolphins, or 49ers.
With our system he would be an olb. He’s be a hell of an upgrade and give us a nice pass rush. I would be all for this signing.
Foster I like as a nice backup. Came out of UCLA when he was drafted. So he is cali familiar.
I think Sopoaga would be better off at young’s spot at end on the line. I think he would be more dominant there. Also like Mcdonald at end to replace douglas I think he showed that he can most def. play.
Also people forget Cohen(who was rookie and i think tore his knee last year during training camp) will be back so he could compete with franklin for some time at NT if he can prove to be healthy. Plus we will have Oliver coming back off injury So while I wouldn’t go against a justin smith signing if its reasonable I’m not all pushing for it either. I would much rather get a WR like Berrian.
Especially since after Hardy ran that 40 time at combine i think someone is going to grab him before us. And with class being deep at WR Could go for one in 2nd or even third. Makes me think with Rumors about free agents were looking at. It maybe that we take Oline with first pick. If we get pace though you can pretty much right off getting groves in 1st though. B/c just wouldnt make sense.
What about Deangelo Hall from the falcons on the trade block is that not a possiblility can you imagine him in the secondary with clements no even the broncos could match that
They would probably want a lot for hall or atleast a high round draft pick. Hall is a good corner a little overrated i think by some but a solid corner guy who is good in man coverage. But he does have a bit of an attitude i mean he basically told off his own head coach. And sorry but don’t need someone like that on team.
I think a lot of free agents know most NFC teams are 1 or 2 good players away from dominating the league. Sounds like we are in for some fun this season!
