Scot and Nolan: A Love Story

I just finished watching the 49ers press conference today and if they were to make a sequel to Brokeback Mountain, Scot McCloughan and Mike Nolan would have the starring roles. There was so much manlove between the two I was uncomfortable. Scot played the PC role to a ‘T’ and Mike Nolan came off as arrogant, even to say at one point that, ‘I will remain the one voice, the face of the organization.’ Are you serious Mike?

York summary:

  • Get back on the winning track
  • Scot McCloughan the new GM. Believed at the time when they hired him three years ago he would be elevated into that role.
  • Yada…Yada…Yada

Nolan Summary:

  • Excited about Scot becoming GM.
  • Allows him to focus more on coaching.
  • Did not have to convince ownership for fourth year.
  • Head coach has final say on the coaching staff.
  • Will not discuss the status of remaining coaching staff.
  • Has candidates for OC but will not discuss now.
  • Hostler was let go because he had to be held accountable.

Scot summary:

  • Did not hesitate to accept GM role.
  • Big part of him taking GM role is that Nolan is still around.
  • Continue to build through the draft and supplement through free agency.
  • Wasn’t asked buy ownership regarding Nolan’s fate.
  • Has power to fire head coach upon disussions with ownership.
  • Good discussions with Shaun Hill about re-signing.

After listening for an hour, it doesn’t feel like anything has changed. It seems that the situation between Nolan and Scot will continue from this point forward. Only difference is Scot is now GM. Perhaps the best question of the day was someone asked Scot is he got an extension. He said ‘yes’ then they asked Nolan the same and he said ‘no.’

One thing Scot said that made me cringe was, ‘Our friendship is going to be there forever.’ I know you want the GM and head coach to get along, but do we really need them to be BFF’s.

The Pundit of 49ersNews. I do what I can to supply the Niner fans with their fix.

    Scott McCloughan! NAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! and GAYYYYYYY!

  • unknown niner

The only big “Change” that could possibly happen is getting cam Cameron or Mike Martz to be the offensive coordinator. The only other thing that hasn’t changed, but we won’t know until next year, is having more wins than losses. Other than that there has been absolutely no changes. Nolan and Scott are still together good at picking talent, not at using talent, but who knows maybe Nolan will coach better without “the power”.

  • Lowrance

So does this mean we’re a lock for the playoffs next year? LMFAO!

  • http://www.hotmail.com Ryan the 1st

So, doesn’t KC want an OC as well??? I hope I am wrong!!! Cam or Martz are our options….nothing else…nobody else is worthy. Pay em and lets get this over with.

  • Niner Pundit

Ryan…here are the names I’ll throw out besides the given Martz and Cameron.

Brian Billick: He still wants to be a HC and he may see that Nolan is on a short leash and who knows maybe thinks Nolan will get fired midseason and can become interim HC.
Jim Fassell: His name is always thrown around, but hasn’t done anything in a few years.
Ken Zampese: Nolan tried getting him last season. Only downfall is inexperienced and the team may not want to take a flyer on an unproven again. However if he were to be hired he wouldn’t bolt for a HC in a couple years like previous OC’s.

I think there is a subtle difference. We will bring on a real OC, regardless of who. Likely a former head coach to boot. I think that will keep Nolan somewhat “honest” in the way that he deals with things. And that OC will be Scott’s guy, so there will be a communication line (around Nolan if necessary). I see the new guy as the one who will buffer Nolan and perhaps mentor him.

Nolan has some strengths, but he needs to channel them and improve his short comings. This might turn out ok.

  • Niner Pundit

Chan Gailey’s name has just been thrown into the mix.

    THIS IS TRASH….NEXT, please.

  • http://www.hotmail.com Ryan the 1st

So, Niner Pundit, you think Gailey is going to be our guy? What about Warhop…tell me he is going to give the big ugly axe, too. He is TRASH! I like that list…maybe I am just being too narrow minded. I am just thinking that Cameron is the best fit as well as the best talent out of these names.

Profootball dot com has quoted a source close to the Miami Dolphins that HC Cam Cameron has been given his walking papers late Tuesday Night. This tip came from the same source that reported the hiring of Jeff Ireland as the GM in Miami.

I don't think this is a bad move. I think McCloughlan will be a good GM. As long as he is able to fire Nolan, if that is what it comes down to. But, I actually think that Nolan will do better being just a straight HC. There have been plenty of HCs in the past that just didn't do that great in a HC/GM role, but were better as just HC. Still, even if the team does improve, I don't think Nolan is the guy who will eventually get us to the Superbowl. IF Nolan finds a really good OC, and McCloughlan keeps bringing in talent, we might return to being a playoff team. Which is better than we have been, admittedly. But, I think we are, if anything becoming even further removed from the Superbowl by keeping Nolan. As far as who our next OC should be, I'm still pulling for Norv Turner to botch their game against Tennessee this week and get fired. Hey, I think getting him back and putting our offensive system back on track is the best solution. If not him, we need an established OC. Martz would be fine, if he is available. Or Cameron, if he is indeed available. Billick isn't a bad idea, but I would be worried that he might end up getting a HC job in a year or two. I wouldn't have a problem with Zampeze, but at this point, I think an experienced OC is essential.

Billick couldnt figure out an offense in 9 years with the Ravens wat makes anyone think he would here? Cameron might be the right option but the Dolphins havent fired him yet. Chan Gaily we could have had him last year but Nolan didnt. HOW ABOUT DENNIS GREEN GUYS WAT U THINK PUNDIT, RYAN THE FIRST

  • 49erglory

ESPN is stating that Bill Parcells has fired Cam Cameron. Now lets hope he is heading out west. Billick is the worst candidate for our OC. His offenses in Baltimore were average to aweful. Prior to that he had Culpepper and Moss. I could have OC'd for that team. Hey Dante, fire deep to Moss. No way would that work here in SF. Hey Alex avoid the open pass rush and fire deep to Jacks err Battl err Gilmo err !@#$!@#$ just throw it and see if someone catches it. This same thing goes for Dennis Green. No thanks!!!

  • Medford

LoL! Nothing is going to change guys we will still suck next year Nolan isnt head coaching material. WHAT WAS THAT QUOTE I READ THAT DILFER MIGHT BE IN THE MIX FOR THE STARTING QB ROLL WTF R THEY SMOKING SOMETHING DILFER NEEDS TO BE CUT AND THROWN OUT LIKE HOSTLER.

  • unknown niner

Oh it starts off in fastfoward motion than in slo motion than it is regular. It is funny as hell.

  • http://www.hotmail.com Ryan the 1st

Yeah….NOLAN, I have a novel idea for you….HIRE THE BEST MAN FOR THE JOB, NOT YOUR BEST AVAILABLE FRIEND!!!!! Since McCloughan has pretty much gone on record as saying that Martz isn't a serious candidate that leaves Cam Cameron. YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS ABOUT Billick because he hasn't done anything in at least a decade that shows me that he knows ANYTHING about offensive NFL football…same for Gailey. Gailey coached in the mid 90's….the game has changed since then. Cam Cameron did it a year ago with very similar personnel as us at each position. Nolan would REALLY be laying all of his cards on the table and solidifying himself as the WORST NINER COACH EVER if we hired Billick or Gailey.

I HEARD THAT CONVERSASION ON KNBR. IT IS COMPLETE BULLSHIT. I'M GOING TO KILL HIM. HE WAS JOKING THE ENTIRE TIME. HE EVEN SAID SURE TO THE RADIO HOSTS "SURE, YOU ARE ON MY LIST TOO. " HE WAS JUST LYING HIS ASS OFF. I'M GONNA FLIP. THE RADIO HOSTS ASKED HIM IF HE WAS LOOKING AT THOSE GUYS ONE BY ONE. HE SAID YEAH, OH YEAH SURE. HE IS SUCH A FUCKING LIAR. YOU COULD TELL HE WAS BEING SARCASTIC, TO GOOD TO BE TRUE. THE ANNOUNCERS SAID THE HIGH PROFILE NAMES. HE JUST SAID YES TO ANYTHING THE RADIO HOSTS SAID. HE IS PROBALLY GOING TO GO HIRE HIS MOM BECAUSE SHE IS A GOOD FRIEND TO HIM. TOO BAD BILL WALSH ISN'T AROUND ANYMORE. WHAT IDF HE WAS A CANDIDATE FOR OC. THAT WOULD BE A DREAM. TOO BAD NOLAN WIOULD PROBALY NOT LET HIM EVEN COME, THAT WOULD BE TO GOOD FOR THIS TEAM.

Here is his God Damn radio talk.

That Brokeback picture is way tooo funny!!!

I just hope McCloughan has the true power necessary to be effective at his new position. The fact that he and Nolan are buddies does not seem like a good siuation. If their friendship gets in the way of McCloughan firing Nolan or giving him a longer leash than he should could be a big problem. A true GM and HC should have a subordinate/manager relationship, not a BFF relationship.

Right now it still seems like Nolan wears the pants and that is not good. McCloughan better grow some balls and make whatever decisions are needed even if that means getting rid of Nolan if this extra year doesn’t work.

  • unknown niner

You want to crown em! CROWN THEIR ASS!

We LET EM OFF THE HOOK!

COULD YOU GUYS SEE NOLAN DOING THIS?…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sh6mSFI-faA&feature=related

    THIS IS HILARIOUS!

I wish Nolan had the heart to be able to do that. I hope he does that after the Patriots game next year! that would be hilarious. If we don’t get Cam Cameron we should officially crown Nolans ass as the worst Coach in Niners history.
