Niners Sign 5
The 49ers signed five players to future contracts on Monday. Four of the players, Thomas Clayton (RB), Markus Curry (DB), Jerard Rabb (WR), and Dominique Zeigler (WR) all were on the 49ers practice squad last season. The fifth Cooper Wallace (TE), spent last season on the practice squads of the Titans and Bengals.
Clayton could compete for a backup role at runningback behind Frank, if Maurice Hicks leaves as an unrestricted free agent.

I think we should dump Hicks and go with Clayton.
I agree get Hicks out make room.
thomas clayton is the man to bad he his JP cousin
Smith Has All the Tools
This excites me about as much as showing Hill the money does!
Will Clayton be the #2 over Robinson if Hicks does’t sign
Why on earth would you want to put Clayton over Robinson?
I know Robinson isn`t the fastest but look at how the guy runs he just needs A good Coach to teach him how to find/make the holes.
Also I have noticed a few guys say they think Hill is the answer.
Please you guys a entitled to your opinions. But think about what you write. Alex Smith is the answer He makes good reads and throws. The WRs are the problem. they dropped around 35% of the balls thrown to them. The O-Line didn`t gel till after Smith was out for the season.
Honestly Frank Gore didn`t play to the best of his ability because he was injured and everyone gives him a pass. Smith has the same problem INJURY!! Remember we won while he was healthy.
Not to mention the play calling didn`t help at all.
Lets see its RUN,RUN,PASS, or RUN,PASS,RUN. kinda dumb don`t you think.
I understand if you don`t like Smith but please think about it. Is Hill really better if so why has he been on the bench for 6 years.
Fan is short for fanatic. I am 49er Faithful. I believe Nolan is a good coach and that Martz is a good thing for the team.
Watch are WRs get better.
Alex Smith’s release is slower than molasses, which is why I think he hasn’t been able to take that next step in progression. Hopefully Martz will coach out Smith’s bad habits and coach in the good ones. If you’re familiar with the offense Martz runs, you’ll realize how quick that release is gonna need to be (ie. Warner, Bulger).
A. Smith also is a slow learner for being such a book smart guy. U. Myer has indicated multiple times, Smith must know the offense to be effective. Having 4 OC’s in 4 years does not help that personal feature.
Smith seens to not trust his reads and as PrimeTime mentions, he hold the ball to long. In the games he has thrown well it has been quick reads and let it go. Look to the first Arizona game last year.
I highly doubt Smith will ever have a 300 yrd game again. He is not a the type.
From SF49ers.com “The San Francisco 49ers signed LB Dennis Haley (Virginia) to a future contract. Haley went to training camp with Baltimore in 2007 but was waived prior to the start of the regular season.”
Is McCloughan and Nolan’s personnel strategy to take anyone they can from Baltimore’s cast aways? There are 30 other teams out there.
He’s a practice squad player, Does it really matter what team he came from, I hope we never here about him again because that means we stayed healthy.
Comment was mostly a reference to the high number of players the Niners get from Baltimore.
Can we quit with the Alex Smith is better than Hill, and Hill is better than Smith thing. In my opinion A quarterback controversy is the best controversey. To me both of these guys haven’t shown what they are capable of doing in this league.like the saying two heads are better than one;two quarterbacks are better than Dilfer.
Nobody is comparing the two quarterbacks on this thread.
I think an underrated WR in this year’s draft is Lavell Hawkins from CAL. Another 209 Boy in the nfl!!!! I think he’ll flourish as a shaun McDonald/Kevin Curtis type in the Martz offense… even though i wish him the best of luck draft position wise i hope he falls into our laps in the 3rd or 4th round.
I would love to see Hawkins take an NFL hit, even just a glancing blow…
I prefer S.Hill over Smith, Hill played good with the lame ass receivers we have (besides A. Battle) and the line still sucked ass and dont say the line didnt jel yet because we had the same o-line besides Staley witch should have been an upgrade over Kwame Harris I saw Smith as a bust before we drafted him he just sucks ass period.
Also as for Thomas Clayton, I liked Whitlock some guy we had in the preseason I saw him play and man was he good.
As for A.Smith cut him, give Hill a decent tender if not draft a decent QB, because Smith is a waste of cap space!!!
A true waste of cap space would be to cut Hill. We would still have to pay him a sizable amount of the 1st overall pick contract, and he wouldn’t have to do anything but sit on his ass.
QB controversies are a good thing in the off season, not so good in the middle of the year. That is why Martz needs to make the right decision based on the effectiveness of the offense and hopefully stick with it.
Sorry I meant CUT SMITH
