Martz to Interview Monday

Jan 07, 2008 31 Comments by FNN Staff

Update: 01.07.08 — Well I’m sure everyone is dying out there to know if there is any info on how Martz’ interview went. We searched for info and even sent a few emails out. Hate to say that there is nothing new to report. I was told that this time of year it is tough to get a hold of Nolan and he is ‘pretty guarded’ to giving out info about stuff. If/When we hear something we’ll let you know.

01.06.08 — According to Jay Glazer on the NFL Fox Pregame show. Former Rams and Lions coach Mike Martz is set to interview for the vacant 49ers offensive coordinator position on Monday. Martz will be the second candidate to interview for the position. Chan Gailey interviewed on Friday.

Not a good idea.Probably be a HC somewhere.

  2. frankgorefan21 says:

I think Martz will turn Alex Smith into a good qb.

  3. wendell says:

said it before and i’ll say it again. martz is not the right guy to lead our offense. he’s not the right guy to lead any offense in my opinion. with all of the weapons they have in detroit, they still finished 19th in overall offensive production. you think alex smith is soft now? wait till he plays four games in martz’s offense; he won’t last the season because he’ll be on his back after every play.

the only time martz has had great success (st. louis) is when he’s had pro-bowlers at virtually every position. it’s not realistic for our team.

  4. samra says:

martz would be a good college coach not professional…he abandons the run and uses more of a college spread attack

  5. Eezy Niner says:

I agree. Martz is the wrong guy for us. We don’t have the WR’s that he would need to efficiently run the offense. Cameron is the man for us. If you see what he did in San Diego, it was alot of running and then throwing to Antonio Gates. I feel like we have two very similar players in Davis and Gore.

  6. lb23 says:

i dont think mike martz will fit in with the niners players. he needs speedy recievers. this will also hurt gores value. i think the best choice for us would be cam cameron.

  7. ninersgold says:

CAM CAMERON would be the best choice, I just hope he is very smart and impresses Mike Nolan. I also hope he doesn’t go anywhere else. Why do we bother even interviewing Mike Martz, I don’t know. We should have interviewed the better coordinators as fast as possible. We may have already lost our chance to get him. The chances of Martz coming are already slim, and he would be terrible here. We should have inteviewed Cam Cameron, Chan Gailey then anybody else. To me it is obvious the offensive coordinator with the most (and best) experience at being an OC is Cam Cameron( nine years). Chan Gailey was OC for a year or two less.

  8. Ryan the 1st says:

Billick would DO NOTHING TO IMPROVE THE NINERS and I am pretty sure that Nolan won’t hire him based on who else he has on his list (hopfully). Cam Cameron just has so many teams wanting him all of the sudden that it beginning to look REALLY BAD for the niners at this point. However, we have two things going to for us that I think other teams can’t say. WE ARE GOING TO DRAFT O LINE AND WR in this draft….giving Cameron the ability to voice his two cents worth might make him want to come (McCloughan should ignore him and choose who thinks is the best available talent) and lastly, he would be given TOTAL CONTROL over the offense. If he is under Schotty he won’t be given that power OR with the Lambs.

  9. Ryan the 1st says:

Even ESPN is saying that he is in HIGH DEMAND….what does Nolan do when the cave starts collapsing around him….HE TAKES A NAP.

  10. Niner Pundit says:

Ryan…it hasn’t been that long. I’m sure if Nolan wants Cameron (like he said he is on the list) He’ll be contacted. I doubt Cam just accepts the first job offered to him. Also there are rumors Cam may wait to see what happens with Schottenheimer. He has said he would go wherever Marty goes. Of course Cam doesn’t even have to comeback this season. He’s still getting paid by the Dolphins.

  11. Ryan the 1st says:

Patience isn’t one of my virtues…but I see what you are saying about him and Schotty. I can’t complain if Cam Cameron WANTS to be with Schotty……even Nolan can’t really do anything about that. If that is the case then (I hate to say it) go with Gailey. It would be such a GREAT FIT for the niners if he were to come to SF and Cameron has proven that he has what it takes to run a HIGHLY successful offense NOW….not during the mid 90’s. The game has changed so much since then. Unless Marty comes back then Nolan has no excuse.

  12. Ryan the 1st says:

It sounds like the Fins might have found their man….only rumors of course…

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

  13. ninersgold says:

Well… sounds like we better pay him some big bucks, if we want any chance of getting him. Pay him JUST a little bit less than Nolan. It sounds hard to get him now. Should have interviewed him FIRST. Unless, maybe it’s a good idea to interview him late, so you know what he wants and you can match or go higher than the other teams offer to him.

  14. ninersgold says:

We should also tell Cam Cameron that we have the same weapons , only younger and faster, that he could use with us just like he used in San Diego. Vernon Davis could be twice what Antonio Gates is, plus Frank gore could be used like Tomlinson. That would be great. We would win a lot of games if we get the ball to Gore (Rushing and Catching) in every game. It would be a beautiful sight.

  15. ninerswillcome says:

It looks like the Niners might go after Colt Brennan, going after Mike Martz and I have heard June Jones (Hawaii) shows me that they are thinking about having brennan in the same type of offense he had in college. That would be STUPID. There is a reason why offenses like those aren’t used in the NFL, they don’t work, because defenses are faster and can shut it down in the NFL more than College. Beside the fact the perfect example of that was the SUGAR BOWL. Colt got fucked up. Scott said that they might go after a QB if he is available later in the draft and has the value. Colt Brennan is also in the Senior Bowl, hopefully they will find out that he sucks there. I would rather see these guys go get Joe Flacco. He is just like Ben Roethlisburger. The college team he played in had a terrible offensive line and recievers that dropped the ball a lot, so he already has suffered what it is like to be a fourty niner, and he still puts up big numbers and low interceptions. The guy is 6′6″ and he can throw the ball 75 yards! He is also surprisngly mobile, just like roethlisburger. He could be a steal in the third or fourth rounds of the draft.

  16. ninerswillcome says:

Oh he plays in a normal style offense, not a spread like Colt brennan does. You would think that Nolan would have learned his lesson of drafting spread offense QB’s (Alex Smith).

  17. Joe S. says:

I just have to say what the heck???

Everybody says they miss the 49ers of the past and the ways of the past, well what would Eddie do???

There are 2 good proven coaches availible Billick & Cameron, Just get them both, Cameron as off. Coordinator & Billick as Assistant HC slash off Coor, just in case Singletary does in fact leave and please keep Tollner around another year. Pay them well and take the hit, no one can argue against having to many good coaches working together towards the push for a superbowl next season plus the player pull those coaches carry. And if Singletary does stay then we are even better for it. Especially with the Ravens wanting to shop or drop Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, Bengals wanting to shop Chad Johnson, and we all Know we’ve got Briggs coming in. And Andre davis will be shopping supposedly, So free agent wise we just have to push for Haynesworth for becoming a Def. End, Starks and Faneca for OL, and thats even without pursuing Samuel. We do have plenty enough of cap space and tell me any player wouldn’t want to play for us with that as a setup. Offense wise we’d be middle ground if not good, defense wise nobody would want to play us.

  18. ninerswillcome says:

Funny… i heard from last year that Briggs said he didn’t want to play in a 3-4 defense, because he doesn’t like it, hopefully being close to home will overcome that factor. Briggs has played in a 3-4 defense before in college and he was good in it but he didn’t like it.

  19. ninerswillcome says:

There are two good recievrs in free agency, Bryant Johnson and Bernard Berrian. Berrian is a improving route runner reciever that is a track star… the kid has speed to burn the fastest players. Bryant Johnson … we all know him being with the Cardinals he is very good. We could use at least one of them. As much as we need to fix the offense, it will be great to PERFECT our defense. If we get Lance Briggs and Terrel Suggs we will be unstoppable at linebacker. And it is actually possible to get those guys. If we were able to get those two, we would give ourseleves at least four more wins on the season. Problem is Terrel Suggs will probally have a franchise tag on him. Of course there is always next year to get him. Also next year we should go after Asomugha at corner, by than Walt Harris should be considering retirement, and with him we would have a great cornerback tandem. We should be able to get him cheaper than Nate Clements because he is younger and will want out of Oakland as soon as possible. (Because they Suck) Oh and if Haynesworth is available he is number 1 priority. We need a defensive tackle and he is perfect for a 3-4 defensive tackle. Other 3-4 defense teams are going after him, like the Jets.

  20. Ryan the 1st says:

THAT IS WISHFUL THINKING…There is NO WAY we get Briggs, Suggs, and all of these other players…we don’t have the room. Haynesworth will stay and Suggs will too…that is why they let Adalius go. I would love to have Asomugha, but he isn’t going to be cheap. Between Bryant Johson and Berrian we should go after Berrian…I am not convinced that Bryant is a number one receiver talent. Plus, the niners have already said that they won’t be as aggressive as last in free agency so expect us to land ONE GOOD player and some alright players. I think the niners ARE playing it too safe in cap space, but I know why….if you keep a little money around each year then each year YOU ARE A TEAM THAT COULD LAND SOMEONE THAT IS WORTH A DAMN!!! Instead of just blowing the bank up on a bunch of players that might now perform after they have their contract….see Banta Cain, Tully.

  21. Ryan the 1st says:

Looks like Cignetti moved on…thank GOD

    http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/7644926

MAN, the Golden Bears are STUPID to take this one on…

  22. Ryan the 1st says:

Now that Cignetti is gone…TIME FOR WARHOP to hit the road…

  23. Ryan the 1st says:

I guess we will find out what is up with the Ravens since they have ALREADY interviewed their SERIOUS candidated for their HC….notice how they moved a whole lot faster than the niners….

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3184203

  24. ninerswillcome says:

Yeah you are right Ryan ,if we go after all those guys we might be great but only for as long as they last. If we did do this we would go through cap hell all over again. But what i was thinking was going after all of these guys with 6 year deals, and trade them by their fifth year in the contract. By then the player should still be good, but they will start to decline soon. We would trade for first round and second draft picks. We would have a possiblity of having up to five first round picks. Trading suggs, briggs, clements, asomugha, and our own pick would be number five. of course that would be ridiculous if we go get all of those players. That would be amazing though, of course this is just using my imagination. No way in hell we could do this. FIVE first round picks, we would be loaded with so much talent. LOL

  25. ninersgold says:

What we should do is go get bernard berrian this season, his speed would open a lot of things up, and Lance Briggs. That should be achievable. Then year after year just keep getting one top player in the posistion we need that year, and get everything else through the draft. (Which we are amazing at) That way we can keep the cap room alive so we don’t kill this franchise all over again and have to go through this rebuilding process that is taking forever, and we will have the youngest and most talented team.

  26. PrimeTime says:

What ever happened to all that talk about us trading for Ocho-Cinco?

  27. Hi says:

We need Briggs, Suggs and Ocho-Cinco.

  28. Lowrance says:

I just don’t understand why Nolan doesn’t move MUCH faster at interviews!!!!????

  29. Arock49 says:

I love this move…. Season tickets re-newed! Lets get Bernard Berrian UFA and another WR in the draft. And dont worry about Gore (2 Knee surgeries) he will stay healthy and start thinking 1000/1000 with Gore………. WE HAVE A REAL NFL COORDINATOR!!!!!!!!

  30. skywalker says:

For those concerned about Martz and his ability to use Gore. Enjoy!

Martz’s offensive philosophy, focusing on his ideal that “this is a game of speed and attitude,” not only exists in passing the football, but also emphasizes the running game as a vital element to offensive production. As offensive coordinator of the Rams, Martz’s rushing attack ranked second in the league with a 4.8 yards-per-rush average, and RB Marshall Faulk finished the year ranked fifth in the league with 1,381 yards and had the best yards-per-rush average (5.5). Between 1998 and 1999, the Rams went from 86.6 rushing yards-per-game average to 128.7, and rushing average of 3.5 to 4.8
