Breaking News: Martz Hired as OC
Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have hired Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator. Martz agreed to a two-year deal with the 49ers. The reason for a two-year contract is that it coincides with the remaining length of Nolan’s deal in San Francisco.

Martz expressed no reservations. Maybe it was because he’s been in that situation before as coach of St. Louis, which he led to the Super Bowl. During his talks with Nolan, he expressed excitement about the possibility of working with Gore and what he believes is an underrated offensive line. Tuesday night he added that former No. 1 choice Alex Smith and impending free agent Shaun Hill will compete for the starting job, with the nod going to the one who “completes the ball the most.” Smith completed just under 49 percent of his passes in 193 attempts last season, while Hill completed 68 percent of his in 79 attempts.
our D coordinator has 2 stay…he’s good
No way do i get rid of our d coordinator. It was his first year at it and he did a good job. Our def. would have been ranked higher then then were if the offense could have stayed on the field longer rather then going 3 and out. Even with that we were still in middle of nfl as far as def. Thats not our problem.
And just by promoting singletary to a def coordinator position won’t stop him from getting a HC job somewhere.
Nothing wrong with the Def. Co. He did good job his first year and Will only get better the longer he’s at it. I wouldn’t touch the def. coaches. They all did pretty good. Don’t mess with a good thing.. Get the offense fixed and we should be set for a good year next season.
Now just like everyone else I wanted Cam Cameron over martz. But he is a HUGE upgrade and does have the nfl experience for OC that we needed. Now He did state in his press conf. that He was going to focus offense around Gore. I also don’t think he is going to forget about VD. To many people are jumping at what he’s going to do when he hasn’t even had one practice yet with this team. I think he’s gonna use VD more slot options and split him out wide. Martz isn’t stupid. He will use what we have and since VD is faster then well most of our recievers I’d like to think he’d be on the field seeing more passes.
Also while i like Hill i think to many people are jumping on the bandwagon over 2 1/2 games. Not saying he won’t be good but I’d like to see him against tougher teams and see what he can do with a full playbook. Most don’t realize they only gave him like 60% of the playbook choices during games he was in. So I’m not jumping on the bandwagon yet. And Smith while I’m not a huge fan of his does fit martz system better. He has the strong arm and played a spread offense in college and likes the shotgun.. Maybe its just me but I’m curious still about smith only b/c year he had with a legit OFF CO. he did well so I am curious to see what happens with Martz.
While i saw people mentioning Colt Brennan, while any QB could surprise people and be good they can also bust.. but brennan and smith played practically the same college system so if your thinking about him b/c of the offense system he was in then smith played same thing. Now QB who could be a sleeper to keep and eye on is Joe Flacco out of Delaware. This kid could surprise alot of people. He’s tall at 6′6 for a QB but he has plenty of arm strength and is accurate with his passes. Could be a steal if he falls to the 4th round. But a team may take a chance on him in the 3rd.
frank gore will be fine he will have a 2000 yard season 1000 rushing 1000 reciving and will will be in a lot more games this will help us we will be better next year and mike is a good QB guy and all around good guy all the rams players wish they still had him and he will better are football team and you got to think a wr is going to want to come here now to because we need that big #1 and they know they will get the ball so i know we will go out and get a big huge WR this offseason because of martz
Will just have to wait and whats going to happen. Everyone is just sepculating? I am barly getting over the fact that Nolan going to be around an other year. But i think Martz is a good hire if he can utlize Gore like he did Fulk and VD as a positive offensive weapon, not just a blocker. The only problem i see is that after a year he may jump ship like Norv.
I actually like the hiring of Mike Martz. Now hire Jerry Rice as asistant receivers coach and byant young as a asistant defesive line coach.I want to see how Mike martz will use Ashley Lalie and Jason Hill.
What is the Salary Cap for next season? Do we have money to spend like last season?
I think Martz will turn the team around quickly. Gore,V.Davis,D.Walker,Hill will all benefit from his teachings. Shawn Hill will beat out Alex Smith in the pre-season. Niners will get the
hometown boys to come back to Cali, Berrian (Atwater.CA) and Briggs (Elk Grove) 1st Rd pick Balmer DT North Carolina and 2nd rd Harry Douglas wr louisville or Lavell Hawkins wr Cal
You guys, I am NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING AN EXPERT, but based on what I am seeing with the niners cap situation we are either going to get Briggs OR go after Haynesworth because I am willing to bet McNolan want to REALLY go after the O line in free agency. I see us spending more money on offense than defense….can we all agree on that? Furthermore, I would be SHOCKED if Haynesworth doesn’t get to play “TAG” with the Titans this offseason. Also, this is something that I don’t get…both the Ravens and Bears are supposed to have GREAT cap space. SO WHY ARE THEY NOT GETTING THE PAPERWORK TOGETHER FOR BRIGGS AND SUGGS. Suggs might still play tag, but I just don’t know. Berrian would be a good pick up…not a GREAT pick up. By the way, I researched the Chad Johson thing…he recently signed a 7 year 35 million dollar contract with the bengals….it happened either last offseason or the offseason before that(I think it was that). It sounds like the bengals are going to have a cap problem that could occur because “T,J. Who’s your mamma” is up for a contract and it could require Ocho Cinco to renegotiate.
niners know that ya you know. you know. lets go niners.ya i got it ya ya go you know niners being gooder
Pundit told me on another thread that the 49ers have 20 million in cap space.
On Cap Hell, it says 30.91 milion as of Saturday. Not sure how accurate that is, though.
30 mill? if we do we could afford like 10 more Nate Clements type contracts, and I’m not exxagerating. We would be able to afford a lot. We should go get Lance Briggs, Berrian as our second reciever,Suggs if he is available, and Albert Haynesworth if he is available. Our defense would be set for 5 years until our team begins to get old. We should also go after some offensive linemen through free agency. Of course that is… if we really have that much cap room. But I think we have 20 mil. So… we could probally get maybe one or two of these guys.
Yea I don’t know if i can trust that site, cuz that’s a lot of cap room. It would be great though. Haha
junkie…NinerCapHell does a good job of projecting how much money they are under. They may not be 100% but I’m sure they are close.
Oh ok. I wasn’t sure cuz I’ve never really been on the site before and wasn’t sure of its credibility.
Well if they’re right on that one, we’re in a pretty good position this offseason.
i think we should go after flozell adams the o-lineman from da cowboys, if not him there are plenty of other good o-linemen out there in this free agency, then go afer briggs or suggs, & sign a d- lineman, then in the first two rounds take a reciever & d-lineman & we will be much improved from this season, if martz is as good as we think he is then we will have at leat a 10 win season
wad do u guys think???
I hope so, but thats what i thought last year….
We had Jim Hostler last year, his first year ever doing anything with running an offense, now we have a guy who has wonderful experience as OC, not a QB coach for one year. If we do have that cap, we are like the richest team in the NFL, if not one of the top. That is seriously a ton of cash. 20 mill is very good to have. 30 mil… that’s wonderful!. We could afford getting Haynesworth,Flozell Adams, Alan Faneca,Lance Briggs, Terrel Suggs, and a new corner (ASANTE SAMUEL or Asomugha) Asomugha probally won’t cost as much compared to Samuel. Of course we won’t do that, because then our cap would suck the next year. We should get at least two of these players, if we could get three that would be very nice. Prefer Haynesworth DT, Briggs MLB, and Suggs to replace TBC at ROLB.
ya i know, but i am just trying to not get my hopes up so high like they were last year. i am a pessimist now i guess.
i actually see haynesworth as the biggest pickup of all. there is no one on the d-line for us and we need to upgrade badly. next would be briggs or suggs, then a good o-lineman.
So after going on a few sites, we’re definitely good in cap space. The lowest I’ve seen is around 23 mill, and the highest is around 32 mill. So we have no excuse not to get at least a couple good free agents this offseason. I’m hoping for Briggs and a good O/D-lineman, depending on what we plan on getting in the draft.
woowww his name is NOLAN not MCnolan..jesus
it is mixing the gm and nolans name dumbass.
I’d be happy with Suggs and Berrian as our big-name free agents this offseason.
i hate to break it to you but i am pretty sure berrian is going to the terrible team we hate across the bay.
Cap HEll is really close….what we aren’t factoring into the 20 million is IF NOlAN is STUPID enough to give D. Smith another 5.2 million a year….Larry Allen is receiving something like 5 million a year, Kwame isn’t cheap…..if we say bye, bye to those players then it will be 30 MILLION. WHY PAY FOR KWAME OR D. SMITH he is WAY over the hill and didn’t even come close to earning his pay. NOLAN…don’t be stupid…if you want Smiley…I understand….if you want Larry for one more year…I understand, but if you put D. Smith and Kwame back on this team AND OVERPAY…I cannot forgive!!!
If we are 30 million under the cap then there is no excuse (besides the franchise tag) why we can’t sign Haynesworth OR Faneca.
And McNOlan better start paying for guards because it is in the inside of the line that we are getting KILLED THE MOST!!! I know they don’t like to, but it could be smart.
lol, seems I lost $10 million from the time Pundit told me until someone esle asked….darn old people!
Low…sorry about making you look bad. Next time someone asks just say they have somewhere between $20-$30 mil, that will make it easier.
Man I cant believe some of you guys complaining like lil bitches. “I want Cam, we don’t have the wr’s, nolan dropped the ball on this one” Damn shut the hell up and let Martz do his thing man, be loyal to your organization.STOP CRYING!!!!!
