Chris Weinke signed Wednesday with the San Francisco 49ers, whose top two quarterbacks are hurt.
He has been out of football since the Carolina Panthers released him in March after six seasons, mostly as a backup. The 35-year-old quarterback played six years of minor-league baseball before winning the Heisman Trophy at Florida State in 2000.
Shaun Hill, a career third-stringer, is expected to start Saturday against Cincinnati. Hill had never thrown an NFL pass in six seasons before last Sunday. Alex Smith’s season is over with a shoulder injury, and backup Trent Dilfer isn’t expected to play because of a concussion.

if i was mike nolan i’d have Michael robinson as my backup to shaun hill vs Bengals…u just neva know he mite turn out to be a good QB thats if hill struggles or gets hurt then..but if u all rememebr M-Rob was a good QB in Penn State..mite as well give him a shot..
