Niners Almost Acquired Briggs

Dec 07, 2007 35 Comments by FNN Staff

In the days leading up to the NFL trade deadline on Oct. 16, the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers thought they had struck a great deal.

Chicago was willing to send linebacker Lance Briggs to the 49ers for an unspecified draft pick. The 49ers were going to get a player they coveted, and Briggs, who the Bears expect to lose in free agency this offseason, was finally going to get a long-term contract.

Briggs was willing to give San Francisco something of a discount on the deal for two reasons: First, he wanted the security of a long-term pact. Second, he grew up in Sacramento, Calif., located roughly two hours from San Francisco.

The deal worked for all parties. But before it could be finalized, the new contract had to be approved by the NFL. That’s where it hit a snag, according to two NFL sources. That snag may prove to be a catalyst for change this offseason in some of the rules regarding trades.

San Francisco couldn’t give Briggs a new contract because he was a franchise player during the 2007 offseason. Under league rules, a franchise player can’t sign a long-term contract after July 15 of a league year –neither with the team that franchised him nor another team. Briggs reported to Bears camp this season after that deadline and without a new deal.

Remember the 49ers tried trading for Nate Clements before they signed him the offseason this year, so could we perhaps see a Lance Briggs signing this offseason?

It’s be interesting to see him in a 3-4 system. I don’t know how that would work, but If it were to happen, It would be nice to see a veteran with superbowl experience, mixing with the core of our young and what seems to be up-and-coming defense.

  2. shane says:

him and patrick willis would be insane. also with manny lawson back next year, i dont even think it would matter who the forth guy would be.

  3. Lowrance says:

As long as he doesn’t drive and abandon his cars on our streets, he’ll be a good add! =)

  4. mike says:

    pipe dream fellas…never happen

  5. Medford says:

Maybe Derek Smith would finally get the boot then. Does it matter if Nolan is still with us next year he knows nothing of offense so who cares!!!

  6. Medford says:

I know Briggs plays defense I was just saying we will still suck next year even if we get him because we still have Nolan

  7. SouthBend says:

I agree pipe dream…..to good to be true.

  8. RobBase says:

Can we trade Alex Smith, Trent Dilfer, Jonas Jennings, Derek Smith, and Darrell Jackson for a sample of Bill Belichick’s brain tissue. With stem stell research, we might have an OC when we have another worth while draft pick. Let’s skip the rest of this year and next year and draft Tebow. Fast forward. Where can I get an Andy Lee Pro Bowl Jersey? Wouldn’t that be “it” in a nutshell? Everyone sport their Andy Lee Pro Bowl Jersey if the Niners ever lose two in a row next year. Is Rick Mirer or Gino Torretta still playing?

  9. frank says:

I don’t get it, why not have done the deal, secure him for this year and give him a long term contract in the offseason?

  10. Self Scientific says:

Hmmm… Briggs, yea cause that would fix our shitty ass offense.

  11. Ryan the 1st says:

Pipedreams….agreed! I think he has already signed his long term deal…I didn’t look at it in depth, but http://www.profootballtalk.com would be a great place to look.

  12. Niner Pundit says:

Ryan…from the article: Briggs reported to Bears camp this season after that deadline and without a new deal.

and don’t see why it is a pipedream. He’s from Sacramento and no one thought the 49ers would sign Clements either.

  13. wendell says:

I heard about this as well. It’s not a pipe dream at all. You better believe that they will make a push to get him in the off season. If they don’t at least try, someone should be shot in the ‘Niners organization.

  14. J-Mack says:

If we sign him he could take so called “sack specialist” Tully Banta-Cain’s spot.

  15. Frankthetank says:

Lets trade for McNabb next year.

  16. ninerfaithful4ever says:

ok frank the tank lets get a qb that cant even stay healthy enough to complete a season we will for surely win a super bowl then.

Lance briggs will become a 49er in this off season i can feel it and i bet they use him as inside line backer go bye Derek Smith

  17. ninerfaithful4ever says:

check this out Linebackers for 2008 49ers season

Manny Lawson Patrick Willis Lance Briggs Tully Banta Cain

  18. SouthBend says:

dont be 2 sure of that ninerfthful4ever.but that is a sick lineup.

  19. Scottie G says:

    What about
    Lawson-Willis-Briggs-Suggs

  20. AXEGRINDER says:

How can we afford Briggs? We’re somewhere around 5 million under the cap. That ain’t much as of right now. We need offensive and defensive linemen. WE NEED A FUCKING PASS RUSHER, and Lance Briggs is not a pass rusher. I have nothing against the guy, and I agree he would be a great fit, but the truth is we can’t afford him, and we need players in other areas. If we can trim some of the fat, (i.e Larry Allen, Darryl Jackson, Derek Smith, Jonas Jennings, ect.) maybe we can make something happen. I think if we got Briggs we would be a force at stopping the run.

Unfortunately, my faith that Nolan will do the right thing is shrinking every week. I mean, he’s got to figure out who’s going to be our fucking quarterback next year for God sake.

  21. unknown niner says:

Donovan McNabb! Who the fuck just said that? You gotta be fucking kidding me! Don’t do it! At All! Trust me. The Niners are my favorite team, but I live on the East coast near Philly. The eagles are my second favorite team. He is a screw up. The opposite of clutch. He will get injured immediately. Especially behind this Line. McNabb is a failure back in Philly. Sure we win some games, but he can’t stay healthy, he has no awareness, he makes really stupid mistakes, the only thing that covered that up was his athletic ability, which is in decline now, no mobility at all, now all he is is a below average quarterback that wants big money. Oh he has good stats, because he gets sacked a ton of times, and its his fault not the O-Linemen. Anyway if we do get lance Briggs we would have a great linebacker corps, except for Dereck Smith. Replace him with anyone and we are in good shape. Manny Lawson, Lance Briggs, Patrick Willis, and ??????. We should Draft an inside linebacker in the first round for this year so that we have talent to support Willis. Wide recievers aren’t that great in the NfL. In the second round we could get recievrs. Draft Joe Flacco from Delaware in the last round. He is fucking awesome! Plus nobody knows who he is. He is 6ft6 tall and can thorw up to 75 yards, and very accurate. Look him up on YouTube. Plus if he does suck we didn’t waste anything big just a sixth round or seventh round pick.

  22. Ryan the 1st says:

My bad, niner pundit…however, I am still not sold on Briggs as much as I am Suggs. DON’T GET ME WRONG THOUGH….I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE HIM ON MY TEAM because only an idiot would say that he isn’t light years ahead of D. Smith in performance. If we were to get him that would be great, but I don’t think we should break the bank on him either. Remember, there is a reason why they double Urlacher almost every play. Briggs is pro bowl material, but I also think he is going to demand a lot of money. However, that might change based on the fact that he hasn’t had a GREAT season. If we got him then we could REALLY focus on offense when the draft comes. I just wish Tully Banta Cain would have lived up to half of his contract. I am not doubting the validity of your report, Niner Pundit, but I do think we shouldn’t over pay him either….look what Tully has brought to the table (yes, I know Briggs is of a higher caliber).

  23. bert says:

if we get briggs we NEED to go back to a 4-3 put fields and franklin at defensive tackle and young and douglas at end and keep a rotation with moore,mcdonald,banta-cain. play to your players strength not what you force them to be

  24. samra says:

if we go 4-3 this is what our lineup needs to look like
LDE1 Manny Lawson LDE2 Ray McDonald
LDT1 Bryant Young LDT2 Aubrayo Franklin
RDT1 Isaac Sopogoa RDT2 Ronald Feilds
RE Roderick Green RE2 Melvin Oliver
    LOLB Brandon Moore
    MLB Patrick Willis
    ROLB Lance Briggs
    LCB Nate Clements
    FS Mark Roman
    SS Micheal Lewis
    RCB Walt Harris

  25. NINER says:

ya it would be sick, but how high of a draft pick are we talking about? cuz i wouldn’t go any higher then a 3rd & 5th together. bcuz we need to keep our 2nd & 1st to get D-linman & a receiver, wait never mind we have D-JAX

  26. Big M says:

samra… no offense but that 4-3 would get killed. Lawson isn’t bulky enough to put his hand down in the league quite yet… a few more years and maybe. Roderick Green is a good situational pass rusher, but, like Lawson, would get killed against the run. Also, I’m not sure what Brandon Moore really has left. I think Ulbrich would make a better OLB at this point. However, Willis and Briggs are ideally suited for the 4-3 and would be a killer linebacking corps no matter who plays on the strong side.

  27. samra says:

big M…thats why we got Ray McDonald and Melvin oliver backing them up…i would just put in lawson and green on obvious pass situations… but moore is a solid SLB which is what he played last year when we put him in the lineup i think he had like 8 sacks on the strong side plus we could rotate lawson at SLB too

AXEGRINDER we will have 30 million under the cap next season. L Allen,K. Harrir,Smiley,B Y,M Douglas, contracts all expire. The only one that we should resign is M.Douglas. We should get Briggs and Faneca (OL) and B. Berrian (WR)
