McCloughan Likely to be Named GM

Dec 28, 2007 25 Comments by FNN Staff

This according to Matt Maiocco’s last report. The word is Scot McCloughan will be offered the position as 49ers general manager. McCloughan is the 49ers’ vice president of player personnel. He is the team’s top scout, and someone coach Mike Nolan has relied heavily upon to make personnel decisions. This morning, I reached McCloughan via email and asked if he had been offered the position. He replied, “(I) have not been offered anything.” There was no comment from 49ers ownership, and a team spokesman said the Yorks will make those decisions after the season.

Expect that to happen early next week.

    YAYYYYYYYY! SCOTTIE MAC! YAYYYYYYYY!

  2. xaos50 says:

    Now get rid of Nolan.

  3. Ryan the 1st says:

Yes, they are playing cool and acting like they have no idea what Maiocco is talking about, but Matt is always on top of these things. I doubt Matt is just going on a whim with this one. Now for Singletary because if we don’t give him that job then he is headed to Atlanta….THAT WOULD BE A HUGE MISTAKE FOR THE NINERS TO LET THAT HAPPEN!!!

  4. Ryan the 1st says:

That being said…I think this would be a great move to make him GM…he is agressive and knows how to find talent. Now if we had someone who could just coach the talent…THEN THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING!!!

  5. West says:

Singletary wont get a Head coaching job wit Atlanta….

  6. ninerfaithful4ever says:

send nolan to alanta. lets keep singletary and bring in Cam Cameron as New Oc Draft a huge wide out ……Baby i smell playoffs in 08 MCcoughan for GM we need this to fall in order

  7. West says:

They will keep Nolan…..just hope we can get Cam as OC an we b fine…..i believe Nolan will do fine with an proven OC….We got an proven DC n place, just need Cam….i like da players, system an staff (except 4 Hos at OC) Nolan put n place….thingz would b diff. if Norv didnt leave da way he did…left 2 late an gave us no chance 2 find a proven OC…..Still Rollin ….

  8. Ryan the 1st says:

I’d like to have Cam Cameron as well West, but you KNOW that he will leave in three seasons or less whether it be another desperate franchise looking for an offensive boost or a college team might grab him. Rumor was that Michigan was eyeing him and if a big program like Michigan was eyeing him then someone else of lesser stature will take him sooner or later. Give the reins to Singletary…it is time.

  9. Nolan's Image is More Important Than Victory says:

This will give the Yorks a good excuse for not firing Nolan.

  10. Alex says:

This is a terrible move, reason being that Nolan will be the head coach next season, and that means another year of doom for the 49ers. There is no way this team achieves success with Nolan as head coach. Horrible news, I was praying for Mike Holmgren or Marty Schottenheimer (see how bad Nolan is? I’m hoping that MARTY BALL comes in because Nolan is the poor-man’s MARTY BALL).

  11. Ryan the 1st says:

Marty Ball? Nolan doesn’t even know how to play offense period. That is why Hostler made up look pathetic and they had to bring in Tollner

  12. Ryan the 1st says:

Either way, IF we bring in Cameron OR Martz…it doesn’t matter because these guys WON’T STICK AROUND. They need to look deeper than finding a fired coach on the rebound. If we hire one of those guys…fine…but don’t get upset when they leave after two seasons. IF and ONLY IF McCloughan gets hired that means either Nolan is staying or Singletary is going to take over. However, I agree, it DOES look more likely that Nolan will be back after this move. The Yorks were preaching change and I don’t mind McCloughan being our GM, but Nolan shouldn’t stay because they are good buddies. Futhermore, Big M or Niner Pundit…please tell me what our chances are of getting Holmgren to be our GM? Or is it done because Holmgren won’t be able to have the power he would want as the VP? I would love for Holmgren to be our VP and McCloughan to be our GM….however something needs to be done with our head coach. Singletary might bolt for Atlanta.

Also, Chad Johnson didn’t sound like he was too happy about being with the bengals next year. Check out http://www.profootballtalk.com. Should we make that move. I hesitate because he is too much flash and not enough “just shut up and play” He is a talent, but what kind of a draft pick should we give up for him IF this were to happen. I guarantee a second or third rounder. NO WAY the niners are stupid enough to give them a first for ocho cinco.

  14. cap says:

Not that it really matters but:

wouldve been nice to get one more “W” but it doesn’t look like it now.

  15. Ryan the 1st says:

Yeah, the real question is….WHY start Weinke when you know the chances of winning with him are two out of 17? Give me Michael Robinson before you dial up Weinke….this guy has no place wearing our uniform!!!! What do you all think about dealing for Chad Johson if he is put on the block…what would you think is a fair trade because you know they want draft picks for him.

  16. Medford says:

Boo this is not wat I wanted to hear. If he is GM that means for sure they will keep Nowin. This seems like a cheap move by the Yorks if this is what happens. Im starting to hate this team “Stay the course” of losing I hope u guys love how we will be in last place for many years to come. Nolan doesnt know anything about Offense and I already know 100% chance he will be back him and Scott are buddys. HEY ATLEAST WE COULD LOOK FORWARD TO R NEW STADIUM IN 2012 IN THE HEART OF THE GHETTO IN SAN FRANCISCO RIGHT. NOBODY MINDS GROWING A TAIL OR A THIRD ARM RIGHT AND BEING CALLED THE TOXIC WASTE OF THE NFL!!!!!!

  17. Medford says:

I WOULD GIVE A FIRST FOR OCHO CINCO HANDS DOWN THERES NO WR THAT IS THAT GOOD IN THE DRAFT.

  18. Medford says:

Someone on another site said this is like comparing the Russia situation with Putin stepping down from President but will still be in charge. If Scot is GM nothing will change Nolan will still have his same role this is like putting a bandaid on a arm that just fell off we need more. What ever happend to the word HEADS WILL ROLE?

  19. J.C. Pearson says:

Hey Ninerfans guess who is calling your game this weekend? Me of course!! I will try to get some behind the scenes info again like I did with Alex Smith. Take care have a safe weekend and a Happy New Year.

    Yours Truely

  20. Doc Iac says:

Wow u guys are crazed, Everyone was on Nolans bandwagon last 2 seasons, now u guys r hatin, dude the team sucks…face it, the offense was suppose to be good, they sucked, the defense was suppose to be great, they were ok, at the beginning of the year everyone was hyped and thought they would win the division, the team under achieved, ya Nolan has some stupid decisions, hes a risk taker, i like it and he should be back next yr…

  21. West says:

    Doc Iac…..Thankz…nicely put…..glad 2 c there r more out there…some where…lol

  22. Nolan's Image is More Important Than Victory says:

Nolan lovers are just as stubborn as Nolan… if you are too afraid to admit you were wrong, then you will never succeed.

  23. Ryan the 1st says:

So…Nolan’s Image…who is your ideal head coach at this point? I ask this because I am pretty narrow minded and think that our only options are Singletary or Schotty, do you agree? Also, I have been wondering something and it is this…what if McCloughan is going keep Nolan one more year to give him a chance while simultaneously putting him in the position to get Cowher after next season. Cowher has openly said that he wants to stay out of the business at least one more season. I wonder if this is McCloughan’s plot all along. I don’t like the idea of flushing a season down the drain to acquire Cowher, but at this point I can’t honestly say which coaching situation is better for the team. The team clearly likes Singletary and seems ready to fight hard for him, but then there is Schotty who seems to turn teams into PLAYOFF teams (who knows if he could do it for us). What I DO KNOW is that there is A LOT of talent on this team, especially on defense, and if we don’t find someone who knows how to utilize it then we are screwed in a few years when players like Lawson, Vernon Davis, and all of these quality draft picks we have acquired bolt. The reason they would bolt…because we haven’t given them a coach they believe in or one that knows how maximize the potential of their talents. Vernon Davis is capable of so much more, same for D. Walker, and I am sure that we can all think of a few other players that are capable of much more, but they can’t because we don’t have someone who knows how to mold them.

  24. Ryan the 1st says:

http://www.profootballtalk.com is saying some interesting stuff about Schotty and Mike Martz…check it out.

  25. MSouza says:

I agree with Ryan. I think that Nolan is staying on another season for the niners to be put into the cowher race. I love Singletary, but I’m not sure if he’s going to do anything about the offense. Besides, I think Nolan deserves one more year to try and fix the team. He has done some pretty good things in his time, and I too remember before this year how everyone was on his bandwagon.

I don’t think that Singletary will get the Atlanta job anyway. They were supposedly enamored with him last year and then they went in a completely different direction with Patrino, heh heh.

Bottom line is that Nolan should get one more shot and if it doesn’t work out I think it could end in our favor, and Scot is a beast.
