Martz in the Mix?

Dec 29, 2007 30 Comments by FNN Staff

Reports are that OC of the Lions Mike Martz will be fired by seasons end, according to the LA Times. The interesting report that has come out today (per Mercury News, from LA Times) is that the 49ers will be in hot pursuit for Mike Martz’ services, due to Martz’s familiarity with the NFC West as well as his successful track record with quarterbacks.

Thing is if Martz is in pursuit that means Nolan most likely will be around for another year.

Mike Martz’s offense is completely differnet. You need a good offensive line for his offense. It would fit Alex Smith very well, it’s a spread like offense, shotgun plays, like his old college team where he threw for 35-40 touchdowns, unless he decides to make the offense west coast, or something else.

  2. Ryan the 1st says:

Do it…this guy will stick with the niners longer than if they were to hire Cameron. Cameron will bolt in 2-3 years. Martz will stay put (hopfully) for a while. I like this move.

  3. patriots190 says:

    YEAH BITCHES WHAT!!!!!
    19-0 TEDDY BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!

  4. MSouza says:

In response to patriots190: Last time I checked the playoffs are full of upsets.

In response to article: I’m not sure on Mike Martz with the niners. He underutilized Stephan Jackson his last years in St. Louis and abandons the run too quickly with the Lions. I think that is a bad mix for a team whose best offensive weapon is Frank Gore, he is not the same mold as Marshal Faulk/Roger Craig. He is more of an Emmit Smith. I don’t see him flourishing like Marshal, I see him put on the back burner more like Jackson.

One good thing that we could get out of it is that Isaac Bruce is determined to get back with his former head coach at the end of the year, so that should help out our receiving corp.

  5. PrimeTime says:

Enter “THE GREATEST CLASS ON GRASS!”

Let’s welcome Mike Martz with open arms.

  6. Lowrance says:

C’Mon Martz…..sign up!!!!!! Then after that maybe we’ll sign 4 new speedy tall receivers!

  7. wendell says:

wow, are you guys not seeing something here?! the niners don’t need an offensive coordinator like martz.

martz’s style of ball predicates itself on having a great offensive line and at least two (preferrably three) talented wide receivers. we don’t have that friends.

martz’s style of calling plays is high risk at best and while our defense is good enough to make up for a mistake by the offense, they’re not good enough to do it consistently. i don’t know many defenses that can win games when the offense keeps turning it over.

combine that with the fact that his personality has been described as aloof, condescending and arrogant; i don’t know that he would work well with nolan (who is probably coming back next year, like it or not) or the players for that matter.

could martz make our offense more exciting? yes. will he sell more tickets? yes. can martz’s offense get us into the playoffs? yes, but with a lot of luck and good circumstance. can martz’s offense win us a superbowl? absolutely not.

remember the only time that martz won the superbowl was when he had to pro bowl wide receivers, a pro bowl offensive line, a first ballot hall of fame running back and a very good tight end. we don’t have all of those peices folks. most teams don’t. i’m not saying that our current team doesn’t have potential but putting the offense in martz’s hands would be a collosal mistake.

with all of the pieces they have in detroit they didn’t perform as well as expected. with the personnel they have in detroit on offense, there was no excuse for them to finish 19th in total offense.

martz winning the superbowl was like winning the lottery in my opinion. he was in the right place at the right time and he had the personnel to do it. i don’t see him winning the lottery again. most people only win the lottery once.

martz is overrated people. don’t believe the hype.

  8. wendell says:

oh by the way, mike sherman is supposed to be available. i’d take him over martz any day of the week. as a matter of fact, sherman’s philosophies are a great fit for our team and personnel.

  9. ShaneO says:

    i agree with MSouza:

martz will not use Gore correctly and we dont have the weapons to be fun and gun… dont do it!!!

  10. FunkyFrank says:

All I have to say is…
Randy Moss – Most receiving TDs in a season(*)
    * = Jerry Rice will forever be better OR in other words, the best receiver of all time. We all know Rice would have had far more TDs if he were to play the 4 extra games that Moss got to play. Until someone catches 23 TDs in 12 games, the record is JR’s. Also, 16-0(*). Yeah. Bill Belichick(*) There are not enough asterisks to go around for all the things the Patriots of the modern age stand for. Good luck beating the Colts in the playoffs, or should I say the Jaguars. Enough venting… I’m off to be productive today.

  11. MSouza says:

Sherman took the head coaching job at Texas A&M, I think its that school. We don’t need a name at OC necessarily though. We need to find somebody that is dedicated to staying and installing an effective offense that works for our players, not some other teams. I’m sure with an early start this time, we can find a hidden gem candidate.

  12. Ryan the 1st says:

Yeah well we need to do something because this Browns game is making me physically sick to watch. Weinke should never be allowed to wear our uniform and I can tell that Hostler is back to his unimaginative ways with the play calling (Gore up the middle, Gore up the middle, short pass play, PUNT!!) GET THESE GUYS OUT OF HERE…

  13. unknown niner says:

OMG Weinke is making this team suck again. Weinke can barely complete a pass. And our special teams is getting burned! (of course having Weinke get sacked doesn’t set our punts up very well. Maybe we should put Olsen in now. So much for ending with three straight wins. USE VERNON DAVIS!!!

  14. Ryan the 1st says:

Also, Terrell Brown went down with a leg injury of some kind and had to be carted off the field.

  15. frankgorefan21 says:

45 yard td pass to braylon edwards

  16. Ryan the 1st says:

Man, he BURNED Nate Clemens….scratch one for the Wolverines.

  17. unknown niner says:

Wow I can’t beleive this. I think Frank is actually going to run the ball 20 times and we are going to lose. Then again we run run incomplete pass every drive. Drew Olson!!!!

I think we should put in our backups and see what they can do. At this rate we might even get to see Brady Quinn in his first game, and he’ll beat us for a couple touchdowns.

  18. frankgorefan21 says:

I wish we could see mike robinson could do at qb

  19. unknown niner says:

What did I say? Brady Quinn came in! Oh I’m good. Look at us suck. Thing is Brady Quinn is probaly going to look good against us because we didn’t prepare for Quinn, plus nobody knows what he’s like when he plays yet, much like Shaun Hill. You can’t study tape on him. No weaknesses to find or any strong points. no clue what to do to stop him.

  20. Ryan the 1st says:

Well, almost no weaknesses, he has yet to convince me that he is capable of throwing the deep ball. As for the rest of this game….Gore is going to get killed if we keep running it between Heitman and Baas EVERY DAMN PLAY!!! God, STOP THE MISERY ALREADY!!!

  21. unknown niner says:

Gore has run over 20 times nice yardage as well, unfortunately when you don’t have a quarterback, even that is hard to win with. Put soemone else in!!! Drew Olson could probaly actually move in the pocket!!

  22. Zack says:

I like this move.Martz it a great offensive minded coach (specially in the passing game)and would be a great fit if we could use the westcoast offense again instead of the lame turner offense.

  23. L says:

I like how everyone is talking about how we have different offenses and martz wouldnt work and also how gore is different that faulk.. Hmm last time i checked gore leads our team in receptions and has been one of the leading recievers the last 2 years.. isnt that what faulk mostly was????? and to say nolan and martz wouldnt work I think he would mix well.. As much as I think nolan needs to be gone.. i think they would compliment eachother well.. Nolan wont let martz forget about gore and the years martz had jackson he wasnt as premier has he is now… and the lions passed soo much cause they dont have running backs.. please Keven jones.. WHO??? if i member faulk had 1000 yds rec and rushing.. YOUR TELLING ME YOU DONT WANT HIM AFTER THE YEAR WE HAD ON OFFENSES.. WAKE THE F#%* UP.. I applaude the niners if they go after martz.. Hire him.. draft or sign and a quick WHITE WR for the slot and watch our Offense grow.. Tell me Im wrong please

  24. Zack says:

Why does the receiver got to be white?

  25. Ryan the 1st says:

Don’t you mean “have to be white”. I am no English major and I apologize if you take offense to that.

  26. Southbend says:

the last great white WR was Jeff Samardzija.

  27. Southbend says:

    from college

  28. West says:

    wendell…nicely said….bring on Cam

  29. L says:

Nope I take no offense to that whatsoever

  30. Joe M. says:

Terrible fit in the short run, great fit in the long run and Martz will convince York to spend money on offense. I love the Martz move.
