As the Niners Turn
This isn’t your everyday daytime soap opera. The Mercury News has an article where quarterback Alex Smith has come out and ripped Nolan a new one. He says that Nolan has tried to “undermine” his reputation in the locker room. In the interview with the Merc, Smith said Nolan made it clear to teammates that the quarterback was using injuries as an excuse for poor performance, a charge that has left Smith’s locker-room reputation in shambles.
“I think if (my teammates) would have heard what I actually said out there that day, it wouldn’t have been an issue,” he said. “But all of a sudden Nolan spins it as if I was making excuses for an injury. What I really felt like was, ‘Yeah, I tried to play on it. And that was my decision and obviously I wasn’t playing well enough.’
“But at that point my arm wasn’t getting any better. In fact, it was getting worse and I was going to go get a second opinion. (Nolan) can spin it however he wants to, but the first thing Dr. Andrews told me when he saw me was ‘This is much worse than I thought.’ “

Don't miss any of the action this year at the SBG Global
This whole thing starts and ends at Mike Nolan, his inability to manage offense and offensive players, and his false machismo.
If Nolan lasts longer than the day after the last game, I would be AMAZED.
It sounds like he will last…at this point I have to say that he needs to be fired. However, I don’t think it will happen. SOMETHING CLEARLY NEEDS TO BE DONE because if this report is true then the niners organization isn’t big enough for both Nolan and Smith.
Unreal….
The one thing I admired was keeping it in the locker room between the team…
That’s shot to hell.
Is it Nolan? We’ve already seen his lack of leadership.
Which teamates are saying these things about Alex’s handling of his injury? Cowardly Lion???
This is like politics…. Let’s see who we can discredit instead of addressing the problems…
On another note….. SOME of us still don’t have the widescreen HD TVS!!!!!
I can see by replays and announcers circling replays that THEY have them and I’M missing out (Maybe because they circle plays outside MY screen area, lol)!!!
Next spring I’m getting one 60″ and one 42″…
Football is one thing where I need to see EVERYTHING.
I think Nolan could be leaving soon….there is too much tradition to keep it like it is. The niners will be the underdog for the rest of the season and I would be surprised if they won even one of those games….sorry, but based on what I have seen can you really argue with me. When you combine that with all the press saying the Yorks are going to get a strong GM I think that Nolan could be gone along with his OC. Nolan knows how to find talent and get it on the team, but he doesn’t know how to use it.
Maybe I’ve just not seen it but has anyone talked about how if there was a G.M. in place Nov Turner would have never been allowed to leave town. Maybe that’s what Denise is upset about. Does the G.M. have final say in this? I seem to recall the Niners not being allowed to interview anyone outside of the organization before they had to hire someone from within because they were not allowed.
And how ironic it is that by letting your O.C. go late in the offseason and replacing him with inexperience, Nolan would be fighting for his own job. He can only hope he catches on as a D.C. for a buddy-coach with such shortsightedness.
D-ville…GM or not. You cannot deny a coach the opportunity to interview with another team if it is for a head coaching job. Any other position – Yes, but not for a HC gig.
The reason 49ers were denied is because it was late in the offseason and other teams did not have to allow permission since they weren’t looking for a HC job.
I believe that Nolan needs to be fired for a bunch of reasons but not for this Alex Smith thing. Alex Smith is the biggest wuss and baby. He is the furthest thing away from being a QB leader of the team. If Nolan stays, Smith will not remain on this team.
we need to keep smith because i hate to say it gentalman but we have the most ideal qb for a west coast offense. we need to get rid of nolan it seems he really dont care what happens to the players as long as he looks good in the end ……. Cut mike nolan and send us a offensive minded head coach and send with him a west coast minded OC and i think the draft and a off season should get us back on track to win the west
I don’t know why everyone is surprised Nolan and Smith are not getting along? The whole team has been jadded by the both of them…However, York has to much invested in both of them, he is not going to let his lousy investment slip away. (I hope i am wrong) Niners fans are screwed for another year even with a new GM…
I’ve mentioned this before. By rule, you can prevent an assistant coach from interviewing…unless it’s for a head coaching job.
Defensive coordinators don’t make out to be good head coaches at all. Offensive coordinators are good at head coach. Exception is if your team has been built for you already, like the cowboys head coach.

here’s the issue. as a player you shouldn’t complain about an injury. anyone that watched alex play after he came back from the injury clearly knew that he wasn’t right. my issue is with alex’s agent getting involved. condon speaking for alex makes him look like a panzy. alex is hurt no issue but as a coach, nolan shouldn’t deride him in front of his team mates. maybe barlow was right. i don’t think the coach handled it properly and ultimately he’s more accountable than a 23 year old kid.
I agree with Wendell on this but also I mean come on Alex Smith SUCKS like I always say. And take up to much cap space I say we cut his SORRY ass!!
mike nolan is gone how do you screw up a season with all the talent this team has and keep your job, it wont happen
here’s what i’m reading guys. nolan will be back but will be stripped of his senior gm duties. personally i can’t see why you bring him back. the players aren’t playing for him and he’s regarded as a joke within the media. the old “stay the course” line is doing nothing but getting smirks from the media and the fans.
hahhahaa you niners are losers!!!!! LOL you cant even win more than 2 games? LOL you guys suck really bad! GO PATRIOTS!!!!!!!!
mike martz will be out there this off-season..he is a offensive genious.so yeah possibility for head coaching job if nolan is fired or not OC-pay him good yorks and get a GM
