MMP: Niners Alone in First
Hard to believe, but for the first time since 1998 the 49ers are 2-0. Undefeated. In first place thanks to Matt Hasselbeck’s great handoff.
Thanks Matt.
The most interesting stat is that they have yet to surpass 200 yards total in either game. And it is their defense, not their offense that is winning games. Who would have thought we’d be saying that this year.
- Don’t care what anyone says. Andy Lee is the greatest punter in 49ers history.
- 49ers finally get a happy ending (didn’t have to go to an Asian massage parlor either.)
- Through two games Patrick Willis has killed majority of quarterbacks within the division. (Watch out Hasselbeck, you’re next.)
- Nate Clements is earning his money. (Not only did he contribute to shutting down Fitz & Boldin, but also had a key sack and forced a huge fumble in the Rams game.)
- Ashley Lelie suited up but didn’t get in for
any plays, two snaps (But hey at least we got to see Taylor Jacobs run the ball…backwards.) - Vernon Davis is not pleased. (I don’t blame him)

Im backin up Davis, the pay calls in the last 2 drives were border-line retarded, it was almost like the coaches were trying to lose the game, Nolan even said in the post game conference that they were trying to just get the field goal, I do not get that mentality, how can you build a offense that you can rely on when you are just expecting them to manage a game and not push to win it. If we play this way next week and do not give Alex, VD, and our wideouts more opportunities to make plays, we will be 2-1 and on our way down. Something has to change….
Most of us agree. The offense needs a change, or we can’t compete with the rest of the NFL.
The 70+ yard punt? Amazing!
Yes, we can all breath a sigh of relief that we won. But we should be 0-2. We brought in too much talent to not start scoring some offense.
Willis??? He’s just a joy to watch!
Clements??? Punching the ball and most of his coverage. It’s nice to finally have a very good corner, again!
We would like to see ANY receiver who can get open and catch! If VD has been open as he says, protect Alex and get him the ball!
C’mon Nolan. This isn’t the Ravens of the Super Bowl year, we NEED some offense!
As I said on the other thread…. what’s hard about VD over the middle like Brent Jones, 2 receivers running routes, and Frank out of the backfield like Roger Craig on passing downs???
2 division wins after 2 weeks is great, but we’ll play NFL teams soon…..
I’m with you guys….Vernon Davis was OPEN ALL DAY and our brilliant OC didn’t even think to run a play his way or a deep pass NOT ONE!! THat is horrible. I am sorry to say it boys, but unless our OC brings something new to the table we are going to get beat on next Sunday.
You can run a conservative offense and still be effective. A quick toss to the tight end is conservative. If you do it three times a game, Davis will probably break at least one big gain. Do they have any end arounds with Davis as the ballcarrier? That would be something. Or how about an end around with Battle throwing to Davis? Get the ball in Vernon’s hands.
And if we’re going to run all the time, how about opening up some holes for Frank? Too many times Gore was getting touched in the backfield and falling forward for a yard. I don’t think that ANY of the offensive linemen were moving anyone yesterday, and Heitmann looked terrible for the second straight week. A few misdirections, play fakes, ACTUAL PASSES, etc., does wonders to put defenders out of position for defending the run.
Smith was 11 for 17. On the first drive two catchable passes were dropped and a third completion was called back on a penalty. That would have made him 14 for 18. There were another couple of drops. He could have been 16 for 18 if the receivers had held onto the ball and Jennings hadn’t grabbed a face mask. No interceptions the first two weeks.
In other words, the deliberate avoidance of passing is Nolan’s doing. If they have any hope of winning in Pittsburgh they’er going to have to open it up a little.
i have fath come on niners were 2-0 im happy about that but we need two work on things lets get 85,83,82,18,88,81,any one lets open up the play book it is the 2nd year alex looks good i have fath in him and hell ya we will win the west are team has fath we belive and so do they GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TRUST IN NOLAN HE KNOWS WHAT HES DOING JUST HAVE FATH THE OFF WILL GET IT TOGETHER
we should really experiment with trick plays like Arnez Battle throwing the ball.I say we try it next week.
Every defense is focussed on Frank now. Especially since that’s all we did last week. Suck in those linebackers and throw over their heads to VD….. Please? Just a little play action?
